Lorene Ellsworth 1926-2002

A memorial service was held on Sept. 25 in Portland, Ore. at Lynchwood Christian Church for Lorene Ellsworth, who died Sept. 19 at age 76.
Lorene Kretz was born March 23, 1926 in Proctor, Colo. to Fred and Opal (Maley) Kretz. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1943. Lorene worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. She married Lavane Ellsworth on Feb. 14, 1945 at St. Francis, Kan. and in 1946 they moved to Hood River, Ore. The family moved to Portland in 1954. She was a sales clerk and warehouse worker for Fred Meyer for 36 years.
Lorene dearly loved her family. She was active in her church and numerous organizations. Through the years she tried to keep in touch with the many friends she had made.
Survivors include her husband Lavane; son Kevin; daughters Kathleen Olsen, Karma Denton and Kristi Johnson; sisters Margie Bohac of Kimball, Miriam Groskopf of Portland Marilyn Booth of Sunol; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Harold C. Peterson 1929-2002

Harold C. Peterson, 73, of Chappell died in his home Sept. 12.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 16 in the Chappell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harun Gatobu and Father Marty Egging officiating. Private family graveside services with military rite will be held in the Chappell Cemetery.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established in Peterson’s name to the Memorial Health Center Hospice Services in Sidney, the United Methodist Church of Chappell and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chappell.
The Holochek Funeral Home in Chappell is in charge of the arrangements.
Peterson was born in Deuel County on July 10, 1929. He graduated from the Wentworth Military Academy. He attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln before joining the United States Air Force in 1950. He served during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan from 1952 to 1954. Following his discharge, he became a partner in his father’s real estate business where he continued to work until his death.
He was united in marriage on April 25, 1956 to Maryanell Myles and to this union, five children were born.
Throughout his life, Peterson was an active member of the community and served on several state advisory boards. Locally he served as president of the Jaycees, president of the chamber of commerce, chairman of the building committee for the Miller Memorial Nursing Home, assistant scoutmaster and was a member of the city council, school board, cemetery board, Chappell development committee, the housing authority and zoning commissions. On the state level, Peterson served on the Farm House Administration Advisory Committee, the Small Business Administration Advisory Committee and the State Highway Bond Committee as well as assisting with numerous political campaigns.
Peterson was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the Golden Fleece Masonic Lodge No. 205, the Ogallala chapter of the Elks Lodge and the United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and Boston Terriers, weekends at Lake McConaughy and the music of the Big Band Era.
He will be best remembered for his generosity and sense of humor.
Peterson is survived by his children: Myles, of Kearney, Mary Beth and husband Jim Van Pool of Kearney, Lisa of Omaha, Roxanne and husband Mike Meyer of Kearney, Ryan of Lincoln and five grandchildren.

David E. Trowbridge 1949-2002

David E. Trowbridge, 53, a lifelong Sidney resident, died at Memorial Health Center Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 10. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sept. 13, 2002 at the Christian Life Center at 15th and King St. with Pastor Terry Detwiler officiating. Military graveside services by American Legion Post 17, DAV Chapter 40 and VFW Post 610 and interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 13. Memorials are to the family’s choice.
David Earl Trowbridge was born July 14, 1949 at Sidney, the son of Frank and Mamie (Fountain) Trowbridge. He was raised and attended school in Sidney until joining the Army in 1968. David served in Germany and Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. He served until his discharge in 1970. On Jan. 29, 1972 he was united in marriage to Lupe Sisneros at Denver, Colo. To this union one daughter, Priscilla Corinna was born. He was employed at the City of Sidney Electric Dept. for a time, Hamilton Electric, later joining Cash-Wa Distributing for 22 years before their change of ownership. He was then employed by Prestolite and at the time of his death was with Cabela’s at their warehouse site. David enjoyed arts and all its forms. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and especially time with his granddaughter Corissa. David was an avid Cornhusker fan. He was a hard working, patient, caring person and was respected by many. David was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Bessie Trowbridge, his father Frank Trowbridge, one sister Mary Lee Trowbridge.
Survivors include his wife Lupe; one daughter, Priscilla, of Sidney; his mother and step-father, Mamie J. and Elias Tafolla of Littleton, Colo.; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Jeri Trowbridge of Sidney; Wayne Tafolla of Littleton, Colo., Anthony and Kathy Tafolla of Sidney and Randy and Linda Tafolla of Loveland, Colo.; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy Uribe of Sidney, Kathy and Joe Brown of Littleton, Colo., Sandy and Valentine Lopez of Sidney; one grand-daughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Gehrig and Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Darlene Loretta (Wiese) Martin 1932-2002

Darlene Loretta (Wiese) Martin, 70, of Sidney, was welcomed to her heavenly home on September 9, 2002.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 12 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sidney with Pastor Bradley Heinecke officiating. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
There will be no visitation held, at Darlene’s request, cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Third Grade Bible Fund or Lutheran World Relief.
Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Darlene was born to Frank C. and Loretta (Dilla) Wiese on May 16, 1932 in Grand Island, Neb. She was baptized March 8, 1936 at Trinity Lutheran Parsonage in Grand Island. Darlene was confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church on March 25, 1945 in Sterling, Colo. On April 13, 1952, Darlene married Lynn W. Martin, Jr. at Zion Lutheran Church in Haigler, Neb.
Darlene is survived by her husband, Lynn W. Martin, Jr.; four children, Terry and Donald Tanaka of Mandan, N.D., Carrie and Robert Terrell of Plains, Mont., Cynthia Elsen of Scottsbluff and Charles and Pennie Martin of Madison, Al.; 11 grandchildren, Anthony Tanaka, Marsa Terrell, Robert Terrell, Jr., Levi Elsen, Amy (Mike) Kaufman, Brock (Kristen) Elsen, Krissy Elsen, Katie Elsen, Dusty Elsen, April Martin, Dominic Martin; six great-grandchildren, Remingten Kaufman, Michala Crable, Trenton Elsen, Sheyanne Elsen, Tayler Douglas, Aryeh Scott; one sister, Dorothy (Robert) Anderson of Sanford, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Delores Cunningham of Greeley, Colo. and Barbara Castor of Keizer, Ore.; and numerous aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and an uncle.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents Frank C. and Loretta (Dilla) Wiese.

Eugene M. “Gene” Schmidt 1909-2002

Eugene M. “Gene” Schmidt, 92, a longtime Potter area resident, passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002 at the Kimball County Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., today at the First Lutheran Church in Potter with Pastor Mary Frohs officiating. Burial will be in the Potter Cemetery.
Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Eugene Morgan Schmidt, the eldest son of Nicoli August and Sophie Albertine (Morgensen) Schmidt, was born on December 22, 1909 at Boelus, Neb. Gene moved to Potter with his parents in 1918. Gene had attended school in Boelus and then Potter and graduated in 1927. He was salutatorian of his class and was chosen as an alternate to West Point. He set type for Herbert Stevens on the Potter Review and farmed for his father and himself on a small scale and for Ray Babcock at a fish hatchery in South Dakota.
On June 14, 1936, Gene was united in marriage to Cleo Belle Tourney at Sterling, Colo. They settled on a farm southwest of Potter which was Gene’s home until moving to Vista Villa in Kimball on April 11, 1999.
Gene was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Flying Farmers and he was instrumental in the planning and development of Vista Villa, and one of the first residents. Gene was also currently serving on the Memorial Garden Committee at the Villa.
Survivors include: three sons, Gary and wife Joyce of Potter, Lary of Pueblo, Colo. and Karl and wife Debbie of Greeley, Colo.; two daughters, Norma Schmidt of Santa Fe, N.M. and Ava Jensen and husband Gordon of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Cleo, one brother, Wallace, one sister, Joyce, a daughter-in-law, Marsha and one granddaughter.

JoAnne Challburg 1937-2002

JoAnne Challburg, 64 of Sidney, passed away at her home, Tuesday afternoon, September 3, 2002.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 7 at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with the Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may visit the funeral home on Friday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.
A memorial is being established.

JoAnne Challburg, the daughter of Emil Cris and Annis May (Spelts) Nicolaus, was born on November 7, 1937 at Staplehurst, Neb. She graduated from Crawford High School with the class of 1956. On June 8, 1958, JoAnne was united in marriage to Donald D. Challburg at Potter. To this union three children were born: Rodney, Rhonda and RoxAnne.
JoAnne will be remembered for her 34 years as a restaurant owner and by the many children she touched while working at South Elementary School in the lunch program.
Survivors include husband Don of Sidney; one son, Rod and his wife Ann of Sidney; two daughters, Rhonda Schoenemann and her husband Stan of Crawford and RoxAnne Abrams and her husband Roger of Sidney; five grandchildren, Krystal and Kevin Challburg and Michelle, Melissa and Michael Schoenemann; her aunts, Katie Spelts of Sidney, Nettie Dickinson and Irene Slanager of Seward, Neb.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
JoAnne was preceded in death by her mother and father; her step-father, Bert Britton; one brother, Bob Nicolaus; and one granddaughter, Kendra Challburg.

Louise Wilds Covalt 1928-2002

Louise Wilds Covalt, 73, Kearney and a former Sidney resident, died Wednesday, Sept. 4 at her home in Kearney. Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. in the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney with Rev. Bob Dahlgren officiating. Burial will follow in the Redington Cemetery in Redington, Neb.
Friends may call at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney on Friday from 1 to 8 p.m.
Louise Wilds Covalt was born Dec. 4, 1928 on the family ranch near Redington, the 12th child of Richard L. and Elsie May (Kirk) Wilds. She received her early education from the Redington rural school system.
Louise was an active student at Bridgeport High School, singing in the school choir and making the honor roll. She also sang in the choir of the First Baptist Church, all while being employed full-time at the Broadway Cafe in Bridgeport. She graduated with the class of 1946 and began working for the Nebraska Department of Irrigation.
In July 1948 she married Arthur E. Covalt in Stoneham, Colo. The couple resided in the Broadwater area for several years. Both worked at the Sioux Army Depot near Sidney, moving there in 1957.
In 1962 Arthur accepted a position with the Department of the Interior and the family moved to the Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, 30 miles north of Oshkosh.
In 1964 Louise accepted a position at Midwec in Oshkosh and worked there for several years. In 1995 she retired from Prestolite Wire, now Krone Digital, in Sidney after 26 years of service.
Louise enjoyed playing piano, crocheting, fishing and was very proud of her Master Anglers Certificate which she received in 1996. She was also a member of the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney and served on the Board of Sessions.
Survivors include her two sons, Danny and wife Paty Covalt of Kearney and Roger Covalt of Minneapolis, Minn.; siblings, Marvin, Lenore, Irma, Marian and Rena Rae; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, five brothers and an infant son, Johnny Lee.

Helen Catherine Bush 1911-2002

Helen Catherine Bush, 91, died Aug. 28, 2002 at Columbine Care Center West in Fort Collins, Colo. A memorial service will be held at the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney Monday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Bob Dahlgren officiating. Burial of cremains will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Burial of cremains of Stuart R. (Randy) Bush will also be conducted at this time. Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
Helen Catherine Bush was born June 30, 1911 in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Guy V. Doran and Mabel Gapen Doran. She attended school in Kansas City and moved to Sidney with her parents in 1921. She finished school in Sidney, graduating from Sidney High School in 1929. Helen then attended Ward-Belmont College in Nashville, Tenn. and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.
Helen married Jarvis C. Bush in St. Francis, Kan. Oct. 15, 1932. The couple lived in Cheyenne, Wyo. and Clay Center, Kan. until 1935, when they returned to Sidney. Here her husband was employed by and later bought the Sidney Telegraph with his partner Jack H. Lowe.
Upon the death of her husband in 1976, Helen continued to live in Sidney until moving to Memorial Health Center Extended Care in April 1996 and from there to Columbine Care Center West in December 1996.
Helen was an artist, completing many paintings over the years. One of her proudest accomplishments was creating the background sets for the Panhandle Players theater group’s production of Brigadoon in the 1950s. She was also a pianist, playing accompaniments and for church services. When Sidney experienced growth after WWII, Helen played an important part in the planning and development of the area know as Country Club Heights, and named all of the streets therein.
She was a 50-year member of the King’s Daughters and was secretary of the Association for Retarded Citizens of Cheyenne County. She also became a member of the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1923.
Survivors include her son, Guy F. (Jeff) Bush and wife Wanda of Sidney; daughter Judy A. Waterson and husband Bill of Turlock, Calif.; cousin, Donna Schmidt of Sidney; sister-in-law, Erma Bush of Denver, Colo.; brother-in-law, Adrian Hermanson of Vacaville, Calif.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jarvis and son, Stuart R. (Randy) Bush.
