Carol F. Gregg 1950-2002

Carol F. Gregg, 52, Lakewood, Colo., died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. at the St. Patrick’s Church in Sidney. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be private.
Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the St. Patrick’s Church at P.O. Box 98, Sidney, NE 69162, or the charity of your choice.
Carol F. Gregg was born March 6, 1950 in Dodge City, Kan., the daughter of Frank and Lee Gregg. She attended St. Patrick’s and Sidney High School. Carol worked in the mortgage loan business for 20 years in San Diego, Calif. and the past 10 years in the Denver area.
She loved fishing, reading, animals and especially her friends and family.
Survivors include her parents; brother and sister, Lonnie and wife Ilsa and Sherri and Pat; four nieces; one nephew and a host of friends and family.

Larry Allison 1943-2002

Larry Allison, 59, a longtime Sidney resident, died at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 at Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Friends may call at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Memorials are to the family’s choice.

Larry George Allison was born March 2, 1943 at Sidney, the son of George and Helen (Nieman) Allison. The family resided in Sidney and the surrounding farming community. Larry was involved in 4-H, farming and enjoyed hunting throughout his childhood. He attended Sidney High School and graduated in 1962. Larry loved the old muscle cars, especially MOPAR.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman all of his life. He competed in many a turkey shoot/trap shoot. He was a member of the Sidney Elks Lodge #1894. Larry made hundreds of lifelong friends throughout the U.S., as his construction career took him to many locales around the nation. His last major position was that of Quality Assurance Superintendent for the runway construction at Denver International Airport.
He was preceded in death by his father, George, his beloved mother Helen and one granddaughter.
Survivors include his son Rick Englebercht and wife Amy of Ft. Collins, Colo.; two daughters, Kelly Allison of Watsonville, Calif. and Kim Allison of Watsonville, Calif.; two step-children, Raymond Borges of Sidney and Stacy Nelson and husband Ron of Peetz, Colo.; his brother Richard Allison of Sidney; his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Garry Brown of Sidney; four grandchildren; four nephews and one niece.

Sara E. Michaels 1938-2002

Sara E. Michaels, 64, Sidney, died at Memorial Health Center in Sidney Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002. Memorial services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Gehrig & Son Funeral Home in Sidney. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will follow at a later date.
Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to MHC Hospice.
Sara Elaine Michaels was born Jan. 15, 1938 in Wahoo, Neb., the daughter of Francis and Margaret (Messing) McElfresh. In 1941 the family moved to Sidney where Sara was raised and attended St. Patrick’s Academy, graduating in 1955.
She was employed locally with the Credit Bureau, the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission at its inception in the Sidney area, A-1 Printing, MHC in the admissions department, Cabela’s and Convert-A-Ball in data entry, the Ft. Sidney Motor Hotel as night auditor and with newspapers in New Jersey and Illinois in the mid 70s.
Survivors include her daughter, Stacy L. Livesay and husband Shayne of New Market, Tenn.; son, Evan E. Stoneking of Sidney; brother, Donald F. McElfresh of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Joanne R. Brinkmeier and husband Audie of Lakewood, Colo.; four grandchildren; numerous other relatives and an extended family of many friends.
Sara was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Ervin E. Stoneking and Donald Segelke.

Betty Lou Bennett 1928-2002

Betty Lou Bennett died Thursday, August 22, 2002 at Auburn Regional Medical Center of complications due to a stroke.
A Memorial Service was held Monday, August 26 at Washington Memorial Park, 16445 International Blvd., SeaTac, Wash.
She was born on August 20, 1928 in Potter, to Frieda J. and Arthur T. Harms.
Betty grew up in Potter and Sidney where she worked in the local PX during WWII. She married and moved to Washington state over 48 years ago.
She loved to dance and was a very talented musician. Betty was a beautiful seamstress and sewed clothing for all of her children. After raising five of her own children, she became a foster mother and many babies flourished under her loving care. Betty had the joy of traveling the world and living abroad with her husband before he died in 1984. She loved watching the Seattle Mariner’s baseball team and was one of their most faithful fans.
She was actively involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives and her greatest joy was when the whole family gathered together over the holidays and enjoyed her wonderful cooking. Betty will be remembered most for her quick wit, her loving heart and her kind, compassionate nature. She leaves a big void in our hearts and our lives. She will be missed greatly.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Lloyd H. Bennett, Jr., in 1984; a sister, Harriett Harms Sanders of Potter; a brother, Elwood Harms of Kimball; and a granddaughter.
She is survived by two sisters, Marjorie Curtis of Salem, Ore, Jeanette Browning of Centralia, Wash.; one brother, Burdette Sanders of Bristol, Tn.; five children, Deanna Wellcome of Longview, Wash., Sandi Lang v Seattle, Wash., Jaci Aubrey of Kent, Wash., Jeff Fix of Vashon Island, Wash., Mark Bennett of Seattle, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Louis C. Jurgens 1915-2002

Louis C. Jurgens, 87, of Sidney and formerly of the Gurley area, died Monday morning, August 26 at the Memorial Health Center Extended Care in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor H. Eldin Wells and Alice Shriver P.M.A. officiating. Burial will be in the Weyerts Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Louis’ name to the church or to the MHC Hospice Inpatient Facility.
Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Louis Christian Jurgens, the son of John and Mary (Miller) Jurgens was born on April 26, 1915 at the family farm east of Gurley. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a life long member of Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church. Louis attended Cheyenne County Public Schools and graduated from Sidney High School in 1933.
On May 22, 1937, Louis was united in marriage to Muriel Volkman at the Weyerts Church. They made their home on a farm east of Gurley. Louis retired in 1984 and moved to Sidney.
Louis was a charter member of the Gurley Lions Club and active in his church and other civic organizations. He was a member of the Sidney Elks Lodge and spent many hours hunting and fishing on the North Platte River. He loved the land and the outdoors and enjoyed the challenges that farming gave him.
Survivors include his wife Muriel of Sidney; four daughters: Sharon Warner and husband Leonard of Jacksonville, Fla., Judy Spillane and husband Michael of Fruita, Colo., Jolene Stringer and husband Dudley of Tempe, Ariz. and Mary Tresnak and husband Daniel of Lincoln, Neb.; one son Dean Jurgens and wife Barbara of Lamar, Colo.; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and five brothers.

Albert Sittner 1920-2002

Albert Sittner, 81, a longtime Sidney resident, died at his home Saturday, Aug. 24. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney with Rev. Alan Davis of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post #17, DAV Chapter #40 and VFW Post #610. The casket will be closed. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
The family has designated memorials to the First United Methodist Church.
Friends may sign the register at the funeral home today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Albert Sittner was born Sept. 4, 1920 in Sedgwick, Colo., the son of John and Eva E. (Sack) Sittner. He was raised and attended school there, graduating from Sedgwick High School. Al worked alongside hs brothers on his father’s ranch. The family later moved to a ranch in Ovid, Colo.
Albert joined the U.S. Army July 30, 1942 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. During his tour, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Albert was discharged Oct. 24, 1945.
He married Virginia Pierson and they made their home in Sidney.
He loved his family, his seven grandchildren and golf, of which one of the highlights was a hole-in-one on #5.
He was a charter member of the Sidney Elks Lodge #1894, a member of the Eagles and American Legion Post #17.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Sidney; children, John Sittner, Cheryl Walsh and Kevin Sittner and wife Janelle, all of Sidney; brothers, Pete and wife Marilyn Sittner of Lewiston, Idaho and Dean and Jeanne Sittner of Ovid; sister, Esther Gillilan of Ovid and seven grandchildren.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents and many brothers and sisters.

Freida Handley 1915-2002

Freida Handley, 86, Chappell and a former Sidney resident, died Saturday, Aug. 24 at Memorial Health Center in Sidney. Her funeral is today at 10:30 a.m. in the Chappell United Methodist Church with Rev. Harun Gatobu and her son, the Rev. Gary Howitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Chappell Cemetery. Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established.
Freida Elisa Aebig was born Oct. 29, 1915 in Plymouth, Neb., the daughter of John and Eliza (Heinrich) Aebig. The family moved to Chappell in 1927, where she attended Deuel County High School.
On June 26, 1935, Freida married Lewis Howitt. To this union three children were born, Danny, Gary and Cynthia. The couple resided in Chappell until 1960 when they moved to Westminster, Colo. Upon retirement in 1979, they moved to Sidney, building their own home. After celebrating 52 years of marriage, Lewis passed away in 1985.
On July 11, 1991 Freida married Leonard (Bill) Handley. Bill and Freida resided in Sidney until December 2000 at which time they moved to the Assisted Living Facility in Chappell.
Freida was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Chappell. She was active in the Sidney D.O.E.S. and was a member of Eastern Star in Chappell. At the time of her death, Freida was a member of the United Methodist Church in Chappell.
She loved music, dancing and playing her ukulele.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard (Bill) Handley of Chappell; sons, Danny and wife Carol Howitt of Chappell and Gary and wife Sue Howitt of Rangley, Colo.; daughter, Cynthia Cronk of Sacramento, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis; brothers, Jacob, Walter and William and sisters, Emma, Clara, Eleanor, Barbara and Martha.

Ben Sam Stuss 1934-2002

Ben Sam Stuss, 68, Sidney, died at his home Thursday, Aug. 8. Cremation was held. Graveside services and inurnment will be held at a later date at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Neb. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are to the family’s choice.
Ben Sam Stuss was born Feb. 15, 1934 in Belfield, N.D., the son of Steve and Mary (Basaraba) Stuss. He was raised and attended school there, graduating from Belfield High School. Ben joined the National Guard before enlisting and serving with the U.S. Navy Jul. 13, 1954 to June 30, 1958. Upon his honorable discharge he attended college.
Ben married Floy Mae Foust in Nebraska. The couple then moved to Colorado where he worked for Coor’s Brewery as a production manager. They moved to Sidney following Ben’s retirement.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Steve Obanowsky of Longmont, Colo.; brother, Steven Stuss; four nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his wife Floy on May 24, 1992, his parents and two sisters.
