Cecil Jackson 1917-2002

Cecil Jackson, 85, Sidney, died Wednesday afternoon, August 14, 2002 at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, August 19, in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney with Pastor Edgar Schambach and the Rev. Jim Weldon officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Elevator Fund.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Cecil J. Jackson, the son of James Andrew and Charlotte Mary (Bartlett) Jackson was born May 14, 1917 at Brush, Colo. He grew up in Brush and Greeley, Colo. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
On January 31, 1954 he was united in marriage to Violet L. Glanz at Sidney. They moved to Omaha for a year before moving to Kearney. They then moved to Ft. Morgan, Colo. before moving to Denver where they lived for 27 years. During that time, Cecil worked as an electrician. They moved to Sidney in 1993.
Survivors include two sister-in-laws: Elsie Green and Marie Johnson and her husband Robert of Sidney and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother and one sister.

Ray Evans 1907-2002

Ray Evans, 95, Bayard, Neb. died Tuesday morning, August 13, 2002 at Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 16 at Community Bible Church in Bayard with Pastor Tom Peyton officiating. Burial will be in the Bayard Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to service time Friday morning at Community Bible Church. Memorials may be given to Chimney Rock Villa in Ray’s memory. The Jolliffe Funeral Home of Bridgeport is in charge of the arrangements.
Alfred Raymond Evans was born August 8, 1907 in Bonesteel, S.D., the son of Raymond Andrew and Stella (Romig) Evans. He attended school in Bonesteel. He moved to eastern Nebraska where he met and married Florence Helen Marie Alfred on November 3, 1926 at Columbus. The couple moved to Maxwell where he worked for the local newspaper. They moved to Sidney where Ray worked for the Sidney Telegraph for seventeen years. The couple was in the printing business all their married lives, until retiring. They owned the Lodgepole Express, Pioneer Press in Sidney, the Big Springs Enterprise, and the Perkins County News to name a few. When Ray and Florence were not in the paper business, they owned commercial printing companies in Callaway and Sidney. They moved to Bayard in 1996 and Ray became a resident of Chimney Rock Villa in 1999 where he participated in most of the activities, especially the old time gospel singing. He also enjoyed playing cards with his wife, sons, and other residents. Ray and Florence celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last November with family and friends at Chimney Rock Villa.
Ray enjoyed throwing horseshoes. One year, he took second place in the Class B State Horseshoe Tournament. He was a member of the Nebraska Press Association and received the Golden Pica Pole Award for being in the printing business for 65 years. Most recently, Ray attended Community Bible Church in Bayard.
Ray is survived by his wife Florence Evans of Bayard; children Alfred Roy (Eileen) Evans of Leroy, Minn., LaWanda Bennett of Sidney, Don Evans of Bayard, Paul (Susan) Evans of Bayard, and Connie (Don) Benker of Kimball; sister-in-law Helen Evans of Clarkson, Neb.; 53 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
His parents, son Virgil Lee Evans, son-in-law Edwin Bennett, daughter-in-law LaVonne Evans, and all of his brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Ehme Flessner 1908-2002

Ehme Flessner, 94, and a lifelong Cheyenne County resident died Tuesday afternoon, August 13, 2002 at his home in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 17 in the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church northwest of Lodgepole, with Pastor H. Eldin Wells officiating. Burial will be in the Weyerts Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Ehme Richard Flessner, the son of Henry and Lena Stevens Flessner was born April 25, 1908 in Cheyenne County, north of Sunol. He grew up in the Weyerts Community, graduating from District #17 school. He was baptized and confirmed at the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church.
On December 25, 1930 he was united in marriage to Clara L. Franzen at the old Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney, now the Calvary Baptist Church. They made their home in the Huntsman area until the Sioux Ordnance Army Depot came in and they moved to a farm north of Lodgepole where they lived for 23 years. They then moved to Gurley for 3 years before moving to Sidney in 1968. He retired from farming in 1973.
Ehme was a lifelong member of the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church where he was a member of the church council and active in the Sunday school.
He enjoyed auctions and visiting with friends and neighbors.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Flessner of Sidney; three sons, Myron and wife Jeanette Flessner of Potter, Doyle and wife Sharon Flessner of Lodgepole and Lamont Flessner of Lodgepole; one daughter, Twila and husband Dick Sick of Chappell; 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Harold W. King 1928-2002

Harold W. King, 74, Hastings, Neb., died Friday, Aug. 9 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at 3 p.m. in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Neb. with Chaplin Norvell Hollmeier officiating.
Memorials have been established to the family.
Harold W. King was born Feb. 25, 1928 in Hastings, the son of Charles and Helen (Corwin) King Wortman. He also lived in Omaha and Ruskin, Neb. and Detroit, Mich. as a child. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1947.
After moving back to Hastings, Harold worked at Skaggs Grocery Store. He also served in the United States Navy during WWII from Aug. 31, 1945 to July 20, 1946, attending boot camp in San Diego, Calif. and Subic Bay in the Philippines on the LSM 263.
Harold married Loretta Wilcox on Oct. 12, 1947. The couple moved to Seattle, Wash., where Harold worked for Safeway. In 1949, they moved back to Hastings, where he was a radio announcer for a short time for KHAS. They then moved to Sidney in 1949 and worked at the Sioux Army Depot as supervisor of the Surveillance Work Shop until it closed.
Harold transferred to the Cornhusker Ammunition Plant in Grand Island, Neb. and chose early retirement when the plant closed. He also worked at Hastings Animal Research Center, Hastings Regional Center and Siddles Automotive.
Harold was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Affairs, Adams County Genealogy Society, American Legion and a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church, all of Hastings.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta King of Hastings; son, Stephen King of Hastings; brother, Charles King of Newman Lake, Wash; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents and step-father Jesse Wortman.

Viola Hilpert 1921-2002

Viola Hilpert, 81 of Potter died Sunday evening August 11 at the Memorial Health Center Extended Care in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, August 15 in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church northeast of Potter with Pastor Ted Bourret officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Potter Fire Department and Rescue Unit.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Viola Alma Hilpert, the daughter of Arthur and Lydia (Steffens) Schubarth was born January 22, 1921 on the family farm north of Potter. She attended the St. Paul’s Lutheran Parochial School and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
On December 8, 1940 she was united in marriage to Walter Hilpert at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. They farmed northeast of Potter until moving into Potter in 1976.
Viola was a lifelong member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was also a member of the Potter Women’s Club and the Potter Senior Center.
Survivors include three daughters: Diane and husband Bob Kotera of Bedford, Texas; Evelyn and husband Phil Miller of Potter; and Jeanette and husband Dick Stahl of Potter; two brothers: Walter Schubarth of Sidney and Elmer “Butch” Schubarth of Potter; one sister, Edna Hilpert of Potter; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Don, her husband, two brothers and one sister.

Edgar N. Meier 1912-2002

Edgar N. Meier, 90, of Peetz, Colo. passed away early Saturday morning, August 10, 2002 at the Devenshire Acres Nursing Home in Sterling, Colo.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 15 at the Peetz United Methodist Church with Pastor Beverly Webb officiating. Burial will be in the Peetz Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in Edgar’s name to the church or the Peetz Lion’s Club.
Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Edgar Nicholas Meier the son of Edward and Anna (Von Seggern) Meier, was born on March 10, 1912 at Hooper, Neb. In 1916, his parents moved to a farm west of Lorenzo. He received his education at Lorenzo High School, graduating in 1930. Following graduation, Edgar helped his father on the farm and at the family grocery store in Lorenzo. He also drive a school bus for the Lorenzo Schools for eight years.
On June 6, 1937, Edgar was united in marriage to Merna Crow at Englewood, Colo. Merna had moved to the Lorenzo area as a teacher. They lived on a farm one mile north and one mile west of Lorenzo, before moving to a farm northwest of Peetz in 1946. Edgar also worked for the Great Western Sugar Company for sixteen years during the sugar campaign. He retired from his farming in 1973.
Edgar was an active member of the Peetz United Methodist Church, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Sterling Masonic Lodge #54, El Jebel Shrine Club of Denver and was the last surviving charter member of the Peetz Lion’s Club, chartered in 1949. He had been active serving on the Peetz School Board, the Peetz Telephone Board and the Soil Conservation Board and numerous other organizations. Edgar and Merna liked to hunt, fish and bowl and traveled extensively in the States and in many foreign countries.
Survivors include: two sons, Gary Meier and wife NaDean of Peetz and Allen Meier and wife Martha of Larkspur, Colo.; one daughter, Merrylee Williams of Pueblo, Colo.; one daughter-in-law, Annette Meier of Peetz; one brother, Eugene Meier of Lorenzo; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Merna, one son, Mervill, two brothers, Don and Daryl and one sister, Mildred.

Robert P. Burke 1951-2002

Robert Paul Burke, 51, Dacono, Colo. and a native of Sidney, died Aug. 4, 2002. His funeral will be today at 10 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church in Moorecroft, Wyo. Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Rozet, Wyo.
Robert was born March 1, 1951 in Sidney, the son of Alma Ruth Burke and the late Ernest G. Burke. He attended the East Ward School in Sidney until the family moved to Sterling, Colo. in 1960, and to Wyoming in 1962.
There, Robert attended school at Newcastle for a short time before moving to Rozet where he graduated from the 8th grade. Robert then graduated from Campbell County High School in Gillette and then spent four years in the armed services.
As a teenager he worked with his father in natural gas fields, spending the past 27 years in that industry in the Denver area.
Survivors include his special friend, Nettie Elizabeth Slayton; sons, Robert and wife Sherelle Burke and their three children of Dacono and Timothy Burke of Cheyenne, Wyo.; his mother, Alma Ruth Burke of Rozet; brothers, Leslie of Cerretos, Calif. and Richard of Bayard; sisters, Audrey and husband Bob Spaeth of Lodgepole, Clara Faye and husband Dennis Rogers of Gillette, Wyo., Ruth and husband Max Way of Lodgepole, Jane and husband Roger Johnson of Rozet, Alice and husband Joe Bolin of Belgrade, Mont. and Gladys and husband Terry Gilbertson of Plentywood, Mont.; sister-in-law, Twila Burke of Rapid City, S.D. and many nieces and nephews.
The Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Opal Moore 1908-2002

Opal Moore, 94, Sidney and a former Broadview, N.M. resident, died Aug. 7, 2002 at the Memorial Health Center, Extended Care. Memorial services will be Saturday, Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney. Further services and inurnment will be held in New Mexico at a later date.
Cremation was held and there is no visitation at the funeral home.
Opal Hollis Moore, the daughter of George Rufus and Alma Lacey (Hodges) Hollis, was born June 28, 1908 in Grady, N.M. She grew up and attended elementary school in Grady and then high school in Portales, N.M. Opal then attended Texas Tech University long enough to obtain a teaching certificate. She taught in a number of rural schools north of Clovis, N.M. She attended summer school to obtain her BA degree from New Mexico Western University in Silver City, N.M. and a Master degree in special education from the University of Denver in Denver, Colo.
In 1934, Opal was united in marriage to Robert Eugene Moore. The couple lived in Trechado and Quemado, N.M., where Opal continued her teaching career. She retired in 1970.
Opal remained active in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a teacher organization for over 40 years, serving as the New Mexico State president for one term.
In 1995, Opal moved to Sidney to be closer to her son. While in Sidney she was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, the Ladies Chamber and attended the Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her son, Robert Moore of Sidney; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
Opal’s husband preceded her in death in 1974.
The Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
