Kathryn D. Sullivan 1961-2002

Kathryn D. Sullivan, 40, a former Peetz, Colo. resident, died in Wheatridge, Colo. Tuesday, July 9, 2002.
Funeral services were held at Monday morning, July 15 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peetz with Fr. Mickey Flaska officiating. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Peetz.
A Christian Wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Memorials have been established to the Peetz Scholarship Fund, American Legion Emergency Fund or the donor’s choice.
Kathryn Dorys Sullivan was born in Sidney on July 23, 1961 the daughter of George and Dorys (Treinen) Fehringer. She was raised in Peetz and attended the Peetz schools and graduated in 1979. She then attended CSU at Ft. Collins and graduated in 1983 with a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Economics. She worked for the Girl Scouts in Adelboden, Switzerland, Cuernavaco, Mexico and in Galveston, Texas. She had reached the highest level in senior girl scouting and was a lifetime member of the organization.
She was married to Kevin Sullivan on February 13, 1996 at the Sacred Heart Church in Peetz. She was in business with her husband after their marriage. She loved reading, sewing and swimming. She was a past president and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxilary at Peetz. Her father preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Kevin of Ft. Collins, Colo.; her mother, Dorys Fehringer of Peetz; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard and Sharon Fehringer of Peetz, Kenneth and Judith Fehringer of Sidney and Neal and Terese Fehringer of Billings, Mont.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Karen and Hank Koehler of Grand Junction, Colo. and Elaine Fehringer of Lexington, Ky.; her mother-in-law; one sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law; 19 nephews and nieces.
Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Kathryn (Fehringer) Sullivan

Kathryn (Fehringer) Sullivan, 40, a former Peetz resident, died Tuesday July 9, in Denver, Colo. A Christian Wake service will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peetz, Colo. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 15 at 9:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peetz with Fr. Mickey Flaska officiating. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Memorials are to the Peetz Scholarship Fund, American Legion Auxiliary Emergency Fund or the donor’s choice.

Chris Nelson 1942-2002

Chris Nelson, 59, Boulder, Colo., died Tuesday, July 9 at the Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder. Visitation will be Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Boulder.
Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, July 16 at 1 p.m. in the Chappell Cemetery in Chappell with Father Edward Madden officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Coast Guard. M.P. Murphy & Associates Funeral Directors in Lafayette, Colo. is in charge of arrangements.
Chris Jeffries Nelson was born Oct. 15, 1942 in Roscoe, Calif., the son of Willis J. and Ellen Betty (Morrison) Nelson. He graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology of Rapid City, S.D. with a degree in Geology. Chris served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant.
He married Genevieve Lorraine Kalb on May 30, 1964 in Chappell. The couple lived in Miami, Fla. before moving to Boulder in 1985 where Chris retired as a navigator from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of Boulder.
Chris was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, an active church volunteer and a member of the Boulder Knights of Columbus, third degree. His family was his hobby.
Survivors include his mother, Betty Nelson of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; sons, Mark Nelson of Boulder and Andrew Nelson of Rapid City; daughters, Maria Nelson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Christie Nelson of Sioux Falls and Theresa Polly of Greeley, Colo.; brothers, Joel Nelson of Lake Havasu and Mike Nelson of Yucca Valley, Calif.; sister, Jeanette Jeffries of Rossville, Tenn. and three grandchildren.
His wife preceded him in death in May of 2000.

George Richards 1920-2002

George F. Richards, 81 died at his home in Duncan, Okla. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., July 11 in the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney, with Pastor Edgar Schambach presiding. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the WWII Veterans Memorial.
George Franklin Richards was born October 26, 1920 to Grover Cleveland and Ida Merle (Roach) Richards at Worth Co., Missouri. He lived his youth on the family farm and graduated from Worth Co. High. George joined the U.S. Army and served as a staff sergeant for the 89th Division of the Infantry known as the Tank Company “The Rolling W.” All of his duty during WWII was served in Europe. After the war he returned state side and married Betty Masur on July 14, 1946. They operated a restaurant in Ordway, Colo. then moved to Sidney in 1947. He was employed by Ray’s Sporting Goods and later by Foland Farm Machinery, National Supply and by Harbison-Fischer. While working with H-F, he moved to Duncan in 1973. He retired with the company in 1986 and spent most of his time working in his beautiful garden and singing with his church friends for all the local nursing homes.
On February 4, 1983 he married Rudine Drew of Duncan. They enjoyed 19 years of marriage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, his brothers Grover C., Jr., Gordon and Dallas and one sister, Delores.
He is survived by his wife Rudine of Duncan; one sister, Evelyn Groom of Worth Co., Mo.; daughter Karen and husband Larry Langley of Sidney; one son Randall and wife Leslie Richards of Sidney; a step-daughter Elaine and husband Mike Kiester of Duncan, Okla.; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and a wide circle of friends.

Leo L. Samson 1920-2002

Leo L. Samson, 81, a former resident of Sidney, died on Sunday, July 7, in Omaha. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, at the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney with Rev. Eldin Wells of the Dalton Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call Gehrig & Son Funeral Home today from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the family’s choice.
Leo LaVern Samson was born on August 14, 1920 in Arlington, Neb., the son of William and Carrie (Decker) Samson. He attended high school in Omaha and was active in football, basketball and track. He graduated from high school in 1939. He was married to Dorothy Lovejoy on April 12, 1941 in Little Rock, Ark. He then enlisted in the Army and served during WWII. After being discharged from the Army in 1945 he moved to Sidney where he was employed at Maddox Motors as a parts manager. He was baptized in the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church on July 14, 1946. In 1953 he went to work for Marathon Oil Co. and in October of 1981 he retired from Marathon after 28 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. His parents, wife and one daughter-in-law preceded him in death.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Samson of Northglenn, Colo. and Jeff Samson of Toledo, Ohio; two brothers, Floyd and Roy Samson both of Omaha; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Aaron Houston 1984-2002

Aaron Houston, 18 of Oshkosh, Neb. died early Friday morning, July 5, at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff from injuries suffered in an automobile accident east of Broadwater, Neb.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., today in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh with Pastor Jack Coffey officiating. Burial will be in the Antelope Valley Cemetery. Holecheck Funeral Home in Oshkosh is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the family for a scholarship fund to be announced later.
William Aaron Houston, the son of William and Brenda (Bairn) Houston was born May 15, 1984 in Oshkosh. He resided in Bridgeport until 1989 when he and his family moved to Scottsbluff. He attended school at Longfellow Elementary until 1994 when his parents divorced. Aaron, Morgan, Cherry and Paula, qalong with their mother, moved to Oshkosh where Aaron attended Oshkosh grade school and graduating from the Garden County High School in May of 2002. He had applied to and had been accepted by the University of Nebraska at Kearney where he had planned on attending classes this fall.
Aaron was baptized and confirmed at the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh where he was a member and active in the youth group. He was active in the Federation Wrestling Program both as a wrestler until he was sixteen and then as a coach. Throughout junior and senior high school he participated in football and wrestling, lettering in both sports. In wrestling he qualified for the state tournament his freshman and junior years and as a senior was ranked second in the state for Class D at 152 pounds. His senior year he went out for track for the first time and did quite well, lettering his first year in the sport.
Aaron was a very smart, fun, good-natured young man. He was very good with computers, stereos and electronics. He also did very well in woodshop and metals. He was chosen to participate in both the Chadron and Mid-Plains Scholastic Contests. He was named as “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” four years in a row and had been on the Honor Roll, served as a teacher’s aide and a member of the Pep Club and FCCLA.
Aaron had a heart as big as the world. He loved little kids and they loved him.
Survivors include his parents: Brenda and Gene Tophoj of Oshkosh and Bill Houston of Bridgeport, Neb.; two sisters and their husbands, Cherry and Nathan Cooper of Bridgeport and Paula and Brian Markowski of Holdredge, Neb.; two brothers, Morgan Houston of Bridgeport and Brady Tophoj of Oshkosh; grandparents, Ann and Gerald Bairn of Oshkosh and Bill and Esther Houston of Bridgeport; great-grandmother Florence Bairn of Oshkosh; one niece; one nephew; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and lots of friends.

Ali Marie Handley 1981-2002 and Sean Gregory Handley 1984-2002

Ali Marie Handley, 21, and Sean Gregory Handley, 17, both of Ogallala, died Sunday, June 30 near Grand Island, Neb. as the result of a motor vehicle accident.
Close-casket prayer services will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Gubser Funeral Chapel in Ogallala.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Ogallala with Father John Schlaf as celebrant. Graveside services will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. A memorial has been established in thier memory.
Gubser Funeral Home in Ogallala is in charge of arrangements.
Ali Marie Handley was born June 4, 1981 in Sidney, the daughter of Calvin and Kira (Batt) Handley. She attended schools in Sidney, North Platte, Kearney and Ogallala, receiving her high school diploma from the American School of Lansing, Ill. Ali had been employed as a receptionist at Whitman Electric and as a telemarketer for Futuremarket. She enjoyed reading and writing in her journal and hanging out with friends and family at Lake McConaughy.
Sean Gregory Handley was born Nov. 17, 1984 in Sidney, the son of Calvin and Kira (Batt) Handley. He attended schools in Sidney, North Platte and Kearney, having just completed his junior year at Ogallala High School. Sean had been employed as a telemarketer at Futuremarket. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wake-boarding, karyoke and spending time at Lake McConaughy with friends and family.
Survivors include their parents, Calvin Handley of Sidney and Kira Handley of Ogallala; grandparents, Robert and Lee Batt of Ogallala and Winnie and Al Bruns of Sidney; aunts and uncles, Les and Jean Kuehn of Sidney, Wes and Robin Handley of Edmund, Okla., Steve and Deb Ringleman of Lincoln, Greg Batt of Ogallala and Chris and Shari Batt of Ogallala; and nine cousins.
Ali and Sean were preceded in death by their grandfather, Harry Handley and aunt, Shelly Batt.

Helen Lockwood Baker

Helen Lockwood Baker, 80, passed away on June 28 in Albuquerque, N.M. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on July 5 in the garden area at Three Fountains Apartment complex. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the New Mexico chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
After graduating from Sidney High School she studied nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Denver, Colo., where she became a Registered Nurse in 1945. She moved to Texas and worked in tuberculosis hospitals near Kerrville for several years. In 1947 she married Girdo Marion Baker. They had two children, David George and Nancy Jean.
Helen worked as an R.N. in Colorado, Texas, Kansas and New Mexico. She earned her bachelor’s degree in management from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas in 1979. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she worked as a nursing home administrator in Kansas. While living in Kansas she served in the Silver Haired Legislature and ran for the Kansas State Legislature in 1989. She returned to New Mexico in 1993.
In retirement she participated in the Senior Olympics winning several local, state and national medals in air gun competition, 100 meter run and shuffleboard.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Gwen Baughman; her son David of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughter Nancy and husband Brian Tafoya of Albuquerque; her two sisters: Zepha Hinkle of New Prague, Minnesota and Mildred Swanson of Dalton; and two grandchildren.

Olga Vrtatko 1910-2002

Olga Vrtatko, 91, Sidney, died Saturday, June 29 at Memorial Health Center Extended Care in Sidney. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Dix Cemetery with Father Robert Karnish of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church officiating. Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Kimball.
Olga Vrtatko was born in Chicago, Ill. Sept. 1, 1910, the second child of Stephan and Barbara (Nejedly) Vrtatko. She grew up on a farm near Howells, Neb., and graduated from Regis College of Denver, Colo.
Olga was employed by the U.S. Government in Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., Denver and Las Vegas, N.M., working as a social worker for the State Department.
Survivors include her cousins, George and Ellen Vrtatko and James Vrtatko, all of Dix and Rodney and Chris Vrtatko of Banner County.
Olga was preceded in death by her two brothers, James and Charles.
