At the age of three Lloyd and his family moved to Bloomington, Neb., where his mother died when he was nine years old. Four years later his father married Clara Ethel Marsh. Boyce and to that marriage three children were born and raised with the love of Christian faith.
Mechanically inclined, he was an avid reader of “Mechanics Illustrated” which nurtured his life work in the field of aviation. He attended aircraft mechanics school at Hoffman School of Aviation in Saint Louis, Mo. in 1931 where he met and was close to many famous aviators. After returning to Bloomington he and a close friend, Lee Worsham bought and rebuilt a wrecked OX5 American Eagle. The two of them then proceeded to teach themselves how to fly. However, the responsibility of supporting a family caused a move to Imperial, Neb. where he was employed by several auto repair shops and finally opened his own machine shop. He continued his aviation experience in Imperial obtaining his private pilots license. In 1945 he went to work for Rector Searle at the Ogallala, Neb. airport. There he was able to obtain his Aircraft and Aircraft Engine mechanic’s license in 1947. That led him to be a designated aircraft inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration. He rapidly became well known in the Nebraska Panhandle and areas of the surrounding states as the best mechanic available and an extraordinarily skilled pilot.
January 1, 1958 he and his wife Pauline sold their home in Ogallala and assumed the management of the Sidney Nebraska Airport where he started Overland Air Service. There he built a strong aviation presence, overseeing many airport improvements, providing charter and air ambulance service and encouraging the establishment of commercial air service by Frontier Airlines. He served as the President of the Nebraska Aviation Trades Association in which he was a member for many years. In the ensuing 35 years he was a strong advocate for aviation and served as airport manager after the sale of Overland Air Service. He retired in 1986 at the age of 75 and was honored in January of 1998 with induction into the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame.
Always civic-minded, he served on volunteer fire departments in Bloomington and Imperial and was fire chief in both. While in Ogallala he served many years with the Boy Scouts of America and was honored with the Distinguished Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member and President of the School Board. In Sidney he was very active in the Chamber of Commerce and the First Methodist Church.
His favorite pastime was barbershop quartet singing. He also was a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks, an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy and the Silver Wings Fraternity. But, when Nebraska was playing football, all else stopped.
