Bessie Shaneyfelt 1909-2002

Bessie Shaneyfelt, former long-time Dalton and Sidney resident, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 in Colorado. Her funeral will be Monday, June 24 at 2 p.m. at the Wilshire Presbyterian Church in Denver, Colo. Burial will follow at the Chapel Hills Cemetery in Littleton, Colo. Cremation has taken place.
Memorials may be sent to the family, c/o Donna Creswell, 7076 E. Briarwood Dr., Englewood, CO 80112.
Bessie Shaneyfelt was born Sept. 14, 1909 in Dalton, Neb.
She married Floyd Creswell in 1929. They lived in Colorado, Oklahoma and California. After Floyd’s death Bessie moved back to Colorado, then back to Nebraska. She married Max Shaneyfelt in 1980, he passed away in 1990. After she moved back to Nebraska in 1964 she taught school in western Nebraska at the rural Center School, she also taught at the Meadow Lawn School near Gurley for two years.
Bessie was active in the Presbyterian Church in Dalton. She did volunteer work in Sidney at the nursing home and helped with meals on wheels. She was also active in the Foster Grandparents program and enjoyed baking and crocheting.
Survivors include her two children Jim Creswell of San Antonio, Texas and Donna Creswell of Englewood, Colo.; two step-children; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Helen Kealy 1922-2002

Helen Kealy, 80, Sidney, died Friday, June 14 at Memorial Health Center in Sidney. Graveside services will be Monday, June 17 at 2 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery with Pastor Lynn Schleicher of the First Christian Church officiating. Inurnment will follow. Cremation was held. Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established to the American Heart Association.
Helen Flora Kealy, the twin daughter of Harry Eugene and Nora (Teel) Heath was born April 4, 1922 in Broadwater. She grew up and attended schools there. At the age of 17, she moved to Sidney.
On Jan. 10, 1948, Helen was united in marriage to Marvin LeRoy Kealy in Sidney. To this union five children were born: Chandice, Michial, Patrick and twin daughters Sandra and Sue. The family lived in Sidney until the Sioux Army Depot closed in 1967 when they moved to Fowler, Colo. They returned to Sidney in 1972.
Helen devoted her life to being a loving mother, wife and grandmother. She was in the foster grandparent program at the daycare. She loved the outdoors, spending a lot of time in her yard.
Survivors include two sons, Michial Kealy and wife Regina of Denver, Colo. and Patrick Kealy of Sidney; three daughters, Chandice Maliszewski and husband Dennis of Grand Junction, Colo., Sandra Henzl and husband Jim of Sidney and Sue French and husband David of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Grace Wessels of Deming, N.M.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers and four sisters.

Jane D. Born 1955-2002

Jane D. Born, 46, a Sidney resident, died at St. Elizabeth Regional Center in Lincoln on Monday, June 10, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 14, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sidney with Rev. Phillip Found officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Arthritis Foundation or the family’s choice.
Jane Donise Born was born in Sidney on June 28, 1955, the daughter of Donald and Velma Born. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sidney. She attended and graduated from the Sidney Public Schools and she was active in band for 4 years and also in Girl Scouts. She attended the University of Nebraska and graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education, majoring in English and reading. She was a little sister at Chi Pi Fraternity; and a health aid in Sandoz Hall while attending college. She lived in Lincoln while working at American Charter Savings and Loan; and then transferred to Omaha and remained with the company for a total of 12 years, attaining the title of assistant manager at the Banks Square Branch. Jane showed a great interest in her family and in reading and writing. She was an avid collector of clowns.
Survivors include her parents, Donald and Velma of Sidney; one brother and special friend, Rodney Born and Joy Speitz of Lewellen; one sister and brother-in-law, Melanie and Dave Bell of Lincoln; four nieces, Marcie Born of Greeley, Colo., Lacy Born of Gering, Megan and Erin Bell both of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Roxanne Engelland of Gering; aunts, Glea Haupt and husband Jerald of Sidney; Marjorie Ahlman of Hastings; Mary Lou Born of Plainview, Neb.; Beatrice Born of Rochester, Minn.; Elayne Zoellner of Pierce, Neb.; Elda Kimble and husband Neal of Brunswick, Neb.; Florence Wells of Neligh, Neb.; Laydell Swan of Plainview; one uncle, Harlan Born of Nesbitt, Miss. and many cousins and loyal friends.
Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Margery Crosby 1944-2002

Margery Crosby, 57, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, June 4, at her home after a 16 month battle with cancer. Memorial services were held Monday, at the Capital City Christian Church in Lincoln with Reverend Bill Thornton officiating. A memorial has been established to the family.
Margery was born December 15, 1944 in Atlanta, Ga., the only child of E. Marilyn and David Thomas. Soon after her birth, they moved to Lincoln where she received her education. She married Bruce Christofferson June 10, 1961 in Lincoln and they moved to the Sidney area. Into this union Eric, Sandra, Brian and David were born.
She later married Danny Crosby August 13, 1970. The couple made their home in Lincoln and a daughter, Brandee was born.
Margery is survived by husband Danny of Lincoln; sons Eric Christofferson and wife Gayla of Sidney, Brian Christofferson and Tanya Bayne of Sidney, David Christofferson and wife Bitsie of Mitchell; daughters Sandra Meyer and husband Dave of Des Moines, Iowa, and Brandee Williams and husband Ron of Lincoln and 12 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Myrtle Louise Merrick 1912-2002

Myrtle Louise Merrick, 89, of Sterling, Colo., died June 8, 2002. Visitation will be today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chaney-Reager Funeral Home in Sterling. Graveside services will be Wednesday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff with the Rev. David Burnett officiating.
Myrtle Louise Kirchner was born September 8, 1912 in Antioch, Mo. She lived in Sidney in the early 1970’s and then in Scottsbluff from 1975 to 1989.
She married Charley Robert Merrick on Oct. 26, 1932 in Springfield, Mo. Charley died in 1978. Myrtle moved to Sterling from Sparks, Nev. in 1994.
Myrtle enjoyed baking, cooking and embroidery. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her son Charley R. Merrick and his wife Sandra, of Sterling; daughter M. Charlene Kaasch of Sparks, Nev.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter and a five-year-old daughter Charlsie Louise Merrick; five brothers and six sisters.
Memorials have been established to the National Down Syndrome Association, the American Diabetes Association or Devonshire Acres.

Virgil R. Pooschke 1928-2002

Virgil R. Pooschke, 74, of Sidney, died Wednesday afternoon, June 5, 2002 at Sloan Estates in Sidney. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 8 at Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. There will be no public visitation. Memorials will be to Sloan Estates or Memorial Health Center, Extended Care.
Virgil Raymond Pooschke was born on April 27, 1928 in Logan County, Neb., the son of Herman and Gladys (Street) Pooschke. He lived in Lincoln and Logan Counties during his younger years. After leaving school he went to work for the Milldale Ranch Co. of Logan County. He worked there for about 20 years before moving to Gurley. He worked for farmers and the town of Gurley before retiring. He moved into Sloan Estates in Nov. 2000. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include two brothers, Ivan of Stapleton, Neb. and Paul of Gurley; two sisters, Phyllis Neel of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Hester Smith of Sidney; numerous nieces and nephews.
Gehrig and Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Louise Reese Holms 1908-2002

A graveside service will be Friday, June 7, for Louise Reese Holms, 94, at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery. A resident of Tijeras, N.M. since 1981, she died Jan. 12, 2002. There was cremation.
She was born Jan. 7, 1908 at Randolph, Neb. She graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in education in 1928 and taught in a one room school house. Louise later went to a business school in Lincoln and worked for Bankers Life Insurance Co.
She met Frank Pynchon Holms in Lincoln and they eloped to be married on June 27, 1939 in Reno, Nev. They settled in Sidney in 1943. He died in 1961 and she continued to operate their accounting business until her retirement in 1981.
She was an accomplished visual artist, working in watercolor and clay. She also loved music, particularly opera, and for many years sang soprano with the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church choir in Sidney.
She is survived by her son, John P. Holms and his wife, Karin, Des Moines, Iowa; daughter Barbara Gentry and husband, Wilbur, of Tijeras, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank.

Jeffrey S. Wilnes 1952-2002

Jeffrey S. Wilnes, 49, of Lincoln, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2002 in Lincoln. Memorial services were held Monday, June 3 at Westminister Presbyterian Chapel in Lincoln with Reverend Dr. Andrew McDonald officiating. Memorials may be made in care of the family.
Jeffrey S. Wilnes was born June 16, 1952 in Lincoln to Norman and Marge (Arendt) Wilnes. He was employed at Community Alternatives of Nebraska and was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln.
He is survived by his parents, Norman and Marge Wilnes, of Lincoln; brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Wanda Wilnes, of Kearney; sister, Kim Wilnes, of Lincoln; niece, Kasey Jae Wilnes, of Kearney; aunts, uncles, cousins and special friend, Merle Jones, of Lincoln.
Roper and Sons Funeral Services were in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Lou DeBruyn 1934-2002

Mary Lou DeBruyn, 67 of Sidney, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at Memorial Health Center Extended Care in Sidney. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday morning, June 3 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Sidney with Rev. Richard Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Albin Cemetery in Albin, Wyo. The family has designated either the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Foundation as the memorials. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. A memorial service will be held at the Baptist Church in Pine Bluffs, Wyo., located at 5th and Pine St. at 2 p.m. on Sat., June 29.
Mary Lou DeBruyn was born June 9, 1934 at Rawlins, Wyo., the daughter of Pete and Mary (Ackerson) Thomas. She was raised and attended school at Albin, Wyo. On Nov. 16, 1952 she was wed to Donald DeBruyn at Albin. They lived in Sidney from 1976 to 1983. She moved back to Sidney from Albin in 1990 following her husband’s passing. Mary Lou enjoyed her family, bingo and playing cards.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald in 1990, her sons Donald in 1991 and Leslie in 1956 and one granddaughter.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Leanne DeBruyn of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; her daughter and son-in-law, Deanna and Terry Kantor of Sidney; her brother Joe Ed Thomas of Montrose, Colo.; her daughter-in-law, Sandy DeBruyn of Chicago, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

Lee Bowker 1941-2002

Lee E. Bowker, 60, Sidney, died May 26, 2002 at the Health One Medical Center, South in Aurora, Colo., following a long battle with heart disease. Memorial services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney with Pastor Philip Found officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #17, the V.F.W. Post #610, the DAV Chapter #40 and Detachment 3, 1074th Truck Co. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Cremation was held and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established to the Sidney Public Library or the Ft. Sidney Museum.
Lee Bowker was born July 6, 1941 in the old hospital in Sidney, the son of Levoine and Berniece (Samson) Bowker. The family moved to Wray, Colo. in 1946, where Lee went on to graduate the 8th grade. In 1955, they moved back to Sidney, where he graduated from Sidney High School in 1959. He then attended Chadron State College for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, which he served from Feb. 26, 1962 until his discharge on Feb. 25, 1966.
On July 9, 1963, Lee was united in marriage to Mary Taylor in Sterling, Colo. To this union four children were born. The couple made their home in Cheyenne, Wyo., where after his discharge from the Air Force, Lee went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked for the U.P. for 29 years until he was forced to retire due to his heart condition.
Lee was an avid drum player, winning many medals for his drum solos in school. He later played the drums at dances in Cheyenne and other locations. Lee dearly loved music and football, especially the Denver Broncos. He also enjoyed fishing, playing pool and metal detecting.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Bowker of Sidney; two sons, Tom Bowker of Terra Haute, Ind. and Tim Bowker and wife Susan of Sidney; two daughters, Yavette Prater and husband Richard of Sidney and Tonya Neemann and husband Joey of Sidney; parents, Levoine and Berniece Bowker of Sidney; mother-in-law Mary Taylor of Sidney and eight grandchildren.
Lee was preceded in death by his infant brother, Dallas.
