Charlotte L. Fleming 1923-2002

Charlotte L. Fleming, 79, a Sidney resident died on Monday, May 6 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 10 at the Peetz Methodist Church in Peetz, Colo. with Rev. Tom Peacock officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Friends can call at the funeral home today from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the family’s choice.
Charlotte LaRue Fleming was born on February 2, 1923 on a farm south of Potter, the oldest of seven children born to Edson and Alice (Carlson) Madden. She rode her pony Trixie, to a one room school house until the fourth grade at which time her family moved to a farm west of Lorenzo. She graduated from the Lorenzo High School and then attended business school in Denver. On May 1, 1941 she was married to Marvin Fleming in Sidney and they farmed near Lorenzo for over 50 years. She was very active in her community and was a member of the Peetz United Methodist Church. She moved to Sidney in 1996 where she was living at the time of her death. Her parents, husband and three brothers preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Kelly Fleming of Ft. Collins, Colo.; two daughters, Linda Fleming of San Diego, Calif. and Kathy Fleming of Santa Fe, N.M.; one brother, Raymond Madden of Kimball; two sisters, Shirley Trimmer of Flagler, Colo., and Alice Madden of Las Vegas, Nev.; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Rhea J. Kutschkau 1917-2002

Rhea J. Kutschkau, 84, of Grand Island, died Saturday, May 4 at Wedgewood Care Center. Services were held on Tuesday, May 7 at the Chapel of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Rev. Joel Schroeder officiating. Burial was in the Phillips Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association Research or to St. Francis Medical Center.
Mrs. Kutschkau was born June 8, 1917 at Lodgepole, to William Sherman Tecumseh and June (Weber) Schroll. Due to the early death of her mother, she was reared by several of her sisters and her father.
She graduated from Linden High School in California in 1932 and she attended nurses’ training in Denver, Colo. On February 14, 1937, she married LeRoy Gustov Kutschkau at Denver. Upon moving to Grand Island during WWII, she was employed at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and at the air base. For the next twenty plus years she worked in the newborn nursery at St. Francis Medical Center, and was present for the birth of five of her six grandchildren and two of her great-granddaughters. She adored babies and especially her grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, a past Job Daughters Queen, member of the Platte Duetsche and the Eagles.
She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, JoAnn and Roland Hyde, and Janice McMullen, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one brother, Jack of Lake Wales, Florida, several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
Rhea was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy, on August 3, 1975, brothers, George, Charles, Roy, Mike, and, two infant brothers, four sisters, Floetta, Pearl, Dessa, and Alta.

Daniel LaVaughn Duncan 1924-2002

Daniel LaVaughn Duncan, 78, born in Potter in 1924, passed away at home in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 1.
He and his family were farmers in the Potter area. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941, where he was a Ships Cook. He was honorably discharged in 1947 as a Petty Officer 1st Class. In 1945 he married Waldretta Engleman. They lived in Kearney, Sidney and Dalton over the next 15 years. After injuring his back in 1968, he attended WNTI, where he graduated as a draftsman. In 1969 they moved to Scottsdale, with their children. Dan worked at BECO until retirement 13 years ago. He also held a job at Phoenix Greyhound Park for over 20 years until retirement.
He is survived by six children and spouses; Vance and Barbara, Bea and Melvin, Dee Dee, Kevin, Brian and Cheryl, Jan and Charity and 16 grandchildren; as well as several great-grandchildren and his sister Joyce Jasinski.
Funeral services were held immediately following viewing on Saturday May 4. Graveside service immediately followed the funeral at St. Francis Cemetery.

Guy E. Weaver 1920-2002

Guy E. Weaver, 81, died April 30 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
He was born August 4, 1920 at Hemingford, Neb., to Melure and Nella Weaver. He attended Sidney High School and later served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Guy also was a Sidney volunteer fireman. He married Marjorie Bolke on November 22, 1950 in Sidney. The couple moved to North Platte in 1972 where he was employed as a crew caller and scanner operator with the Union Pacific Railroad. He later owned and operated his own tree service.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie of North Platte; a brother, Stanley (Gertrude) Weaver of Sidney; two sisters, Pat Beeken of Sidney and Ruth Ferguson of Lincoln; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Chuck in 1995; three sisters, Reah, Frieda and Lylus and his parents.
Services were held Monday, May 6 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Perry Edwards officiating. Burial was at the North Platte Cemetery.

Dorthy E. Theis 1912-2002

Dorthy E. Theis, 89 of Lodgepole died Monday evening, May 6 at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 10 in the Lodgepole United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lyle Schoen officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Lodgepole.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lodgepole United Methodist Church or to the family for their discretion.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Dorthy Ellen Theis was born in Oto, Iowa on August 9, 1912, the daughter of James and Susan (Elser) Irwin. Her family moved to Cheyenne County in 1914, residing north and east of Colton. Dorothy attended District 39, graduating from the 8th grade.
Dorthy married Lester Theis in Beatrice, Neb. on November 9, 1937. They lived in the Sunny Side community until the death of her husband in 1996. Dorthy moved to Lodgepole where she resided until her death.
Dorthy was a homemaker, working and cooking early in her life for neighbors and preparing meals for threshing crews for $2.00 a week. Later, many a Sunny Side kid relished her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls. Dorthy crocheted afghans for each child, receiving blankets at birth and afghans for each grandchild’s graduation, and receiving blankets for each great-grandchild.
She was a member for many years of the Sunny Side Helping Hand Club, a 50 plus year member of the Lodgepole United Methodist Church and its Auxiliary, and an active member of the Lodgepole Senior Citizens. Lester and Dorthy were honored as Old Settlers King and Queen in 1986.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Doris Theis of Osceola, Neb.; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Richard Teague of Lodgepole; a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Marcia Theis of Grand Island, Neb.; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Terry Acton of Beatrice, Neb.; a sister, Ethel Irwin of Demming, N.M.; six grandsons, four granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Arlina Harte 1933-2002

Arlina Harte, 68, Buffalo, Wyo., died Tuesday, April 30 at her home. Memorial services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo with Rev. Richard Edgerton officiating. Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to The Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice, St. Francis Animal Shelter or ALS Research Program in care of the Adams Funeral Home.
Arlina Harte was born Oct. 8, 1933 in Sidney, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Harte. She grew up and received her education in Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska. Arlina was a school teacher and coach at San Mateo Jr. College in San Mateo, Calif. and Sky Line College in San Francisco, Calif. As a member of the original faculty of Sky Line College, she was responsible for initiating all the athletic programs. Arlina retired to Buffalo in 1993.
She was a member of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo. Her hobbies were golfing, fishing and spending time with family pets.
Survivors include one brother, John Harte of St. Petersburg, Fla.; many cousins and a multitude of close friends too numerous to mention.
Arlina was preceded in death by her parents.

Andrea Hernandez Franco 1911-2002

A funeral mass for Andrea Hernandez Franco, 90, of Sidney, formerly of Minatare, who died Saturday, April 27 at Beverly Healthcare in Sidney, will be held Wednesday May 1 at 2 p.m at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering with Father Gerald Harr officiating. Interment will be at East Lawn Cemetery in Minatare. A vigil service will be held today at 8 p.m. at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff with Sister Marietta Spenner officiating. Friends who wish may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 8 a.m. until noon. A memorial has been established to Beverly Healthcare in Sidney.
Andrea was born November 10, 1911 in the orange grove country of Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to Victoriano and Leonides (Adame) Hernandez where she was reared and educated prior to migrating to the United States. Her family settled in Wheatland, Wyo. where she met Santos Franco. They were married in Wheatland on November 22, 1930. They then established residence in Minatare where they raised their family. They resided there until she moved to Sidney in 1993 where she lived with her daughter Sally prior to becoming a resident of the Beverly Healthcare facility in Sidney.
She belonged to the Catholic Church and very much enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader and enjoyed poetry and music. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She devoted her love and life to all her family. She will be greatly missed by all her family,
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law: Severiano (Sam) and Bobbie Franco of Lincoln, Seturnino (Nino) and Jean Franco of Papillion, and Salvadore (Sal) and Mary Beth Franco of Gering.
Daughters and sons-in-law: Lucy and Alfred Ventura of Scottsbluff, and Sally and Albert Montanez of Sidney.
Daughters-in-law: Aurora Franco of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Bernice Franco of Scottsbluff.
Brothers: Fidel Hernandez and Teodoro Hernandez both of Mercedes, Texas.
Twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons Aniceto, Luis and Santos, Jr.; great-granddaughter Savanna and sister Dionesia.

Ray Slama 1922-2002

Ray Slama, 80 of Potter, died Monday, April 22, at his home in Potter.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 26, in the Potter United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Frohs officiating. Burial will be in the Potter Cemetery with Military graveside services conducted by the Potter American Legion Post #291.
Memorials have been established to the Potter Rescue Unit or the Potter United Methodist Church.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Raymond L. Slama, the son of Charles R. and Jessie M. (Sapp) Slama was born April 13, 1922 twelve miles north and one mile east of Potter. He attended rural school at District #62 for eight years before graduating from Potter High School in 1939. He then worked on the family farm and neighbor’s farms until he enlisted in the 8th Army Air Force on September 16, 1942. He completed 32 combat missions over occupied Europe in B-24 Bombers. He was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant on September 27, 1945. He received the Oak Leaf Medal with 3 clusters and the distinguished Flying Cross.
On September 27, 1947 he was united in marriage to Ruth M. Sellers in Sidney. He spent his entire life farming near Potter. Ray was active in his community, serving nine years on the Potter School Board and spending several years coaching boys baseball. He also was a fireman for a number of years. He loved all sports, including trap shooting where he built the Potter Trap Club in 1976.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Slama; three sons: Mike Slama and wife Marlene, Jim Slama and companion Melanie West, and Mark Slama; one daughter, Louanne and husband Carl Issacs; one brother, Robert Slama and wife Betty; one sister, Evelyn Adams all of Potter; 8 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gertrude M. Stikker 1918-2002

Gertrude M. Stikker, 84, Olympia, Wash. and a former resident of Sidney, died April 19 in Olympia. Memorial services will be Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sidney with Fr. Jim Novakowski officiating. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be given to either St. Patrick’s Church or the National Stroke Association, at 9707 E. Easter Lane, Englewood, CO, 80112.
Gertrude M. Stikker was born on November 11, 1918 in Gurley, the daughter of Thomas E. and Margaret (Campbell) Filbin. She moved to Sidney as a youngster and attended and graduated from St. Patrick’s Academy in 1936. She was married to Allen Stikker on December 31, 1939 in Cheyenne, Wyo. The family moved to Dalton where they operated a farm and ranch until 1959 at which time they moved to Sidney. She lived in Sidney until 1997 when she moved to Olympia, Wash. following the death of her husband in 1996.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Judith Hochman of Olympia, Wash. and Thomas and Barbara Stikker and two grandchildren, all of Greenbrae, Calif.
Gehrig and Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
