Ernest John Johnson 1922-2002

Ernest John Johnson, Salt Lake City, Utah and a former Potter resident, died Feb. 2, 2002 in Salt Lake City. His funeral was Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary. Entombment followed at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to any cancer and/or cancer research foundation in Ernie’s name.
Ernest J. Johnson was born May 23, 1922 in Potter, the son of Alfred and Rose Johnson. He served in the Army Signal Corp in the Pacific during World War II. Ernie worked at Mountain Fuel Supply Company (Questar) for 37 years. He started in 1946 as an accountant clerk in Rock Springs, Wyo., and ended his career in Salt Lake City as Vice President of Finance.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elsie; two daughters, Gene’e Dee Smith and husband Calvin and Barbara JeRae Smith and husband Frederick; sister, Pauline Atkins and three grandchildren.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Rose Johnson.

Armon P. Baker 1943-2002

Armon P. Baker, 59, a resident of rural Potter, died at his home on Saturday, Feb. 9. His funeral will be held at a later date in California. The body was cremated. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the local arrangements.
Armon Phillip Baker was born on Jan. 19, 1943 in Westminster, Colo., the son of Phillip and Marjorie (Teeter) Baker. He was raised in Burlington, Colo. and resided there for 17 years. Armon attended Burlington High School, graduating in 1960. He moved to San Diego and entered the U.S. Navy in 1960 and served 23 years.
Armon was also a veteran of the Vietnam War, retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1983.
He was married to Hilda Vasquez on June 17, 1972 at Las Vegas, Nev. The couple moved to Nebraska in 1999.
Armon loved working on cars. He was an avid bowler, part of the ABC and bowled a perfect 300 game.
He was a member of the VFW. Armon loved his family, animals and the open country.
Survivors include his wife Hilda Baker of San Diego, Calif.; four daughters, Lima Baker, Rosa Medeles, Margurita McDaniel and Gladys Menjares; one son, Phillip Baker; four brothers, Alvin, Bruce, Sanford and Craig Taylor; one sister, Cheryl Corrigan and 11 grandchildren.

Herbert E. Schuessler 1925-2002

Herbert E. Schuessler, 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 13 at his home north of Potter. His funeral will be Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Potter with Rev. Ted A. Bourret officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. As his own request in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or The Lutheran Hour.
Herbert Edmund Schuessler was born August 25, 1925 on a farm north of Potter, the son of Arthur and Ottilie (Steffens) Schuessler. He was baptized Sept. 20, 1925 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, north of Potter. Herbert attended Parochial School at St. Paul’s. He was confirmed April 2, 1939, also at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Potter. Here, he remained an active member until the time of his death.
Herbert worked for his father until he was inducted into the Army in January 1951. He took his basic training at Fort Riley, Kan. in the 86 Infantry. For 18 months Herbert was in the Military Police Corps in Korea. He played ball with the Eighth Army Headquarters Team in Taegue, Korea while in the Army.
His favorite sport was baseball and he played ball with the Bunker Hill Ball Club until 1959.
On June 7, 1953, Herbert was united in marriage to Annabelle Brogren at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dalton. He trusted in the Lord, loved his family and took pride in his farming and everything he did.
Survivors include his wife, Annabelle of Potter; daughters, Ardel Daffer of Lincoln and Lisa and husband Greg Lubken of Hastings; sons, Duane and wife Shelley Schuessler of Sidney, Jerry and wife Wendi Schuessler of Sidney and Kevin and Sue Schuessler of Lincoln; sisters, Mrs. Olga Baack of Sidney, Mrs. Mildred Katschor of Dearborn, Mich. and Mrs. Vanita Katschor of Bayonet Point, Fla.; brother Harold and wife Bonnie Schuessler of Potter; three grandsons and three granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bertha A. McGuire 1918-2002

Bertha A. McGuire, 84, North Platte, died Feb. 13 at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte. Services will be Friday, at 11 a.m. at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Rev. Nathan Wadewitz officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is today from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the chapel. Memorials have been established to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Bertha McGuire was born Jan. 19, 1918 in Lodgepole, the daughter of Noah and Libbie Pavlat Walters. She was a 1936 graduate of Lodgepole High School. Bertha moved to North Platte in 1938, where she worked in government, county and private business.
On Oct. 12, 1946, she married Clyde “Sam” McGuire in Oberlin, Kan. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Bertha was a member of the B.P.O. Does #109, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Union Pacific Oldtimers.
Survivors include her twin sister, Berniece “Nancy” Merrell of Gering and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, Dorothy M. Greiner and Lillian H. Norton, and five brothers, Edward, Jack, Oren, Arnold and Richard Walters.

Ernest E. Duffy

Ernest E. Duffy, son of Ernest and Ada Duffy, died Feb. 10, 2002 at the VA Hospital in Ft. Meade, S.D. Cremation has taken place and ashes were placed in Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney.
Ernest was a World War II veteran, serving in Alaska, France and at Normandy. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and loved fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his son Don, two sisters, four nephews and one niece.
Ernest was preceded in death by his son Ron, his wife, three sisters, one brother and his parents.
Gehrig and Son Funeral Home were in charge of the arrangements.

Charles Weir 1920-2002

Charles Weir 1920-2002 Charles Weir, 81 of Sidney, died Feb. 12, 2002 at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16 in the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with Rev. Alan Davis of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post No.17, the VFW Post No. 610, the DAV Chapter No. 40 and the Sidney National Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Memorial Health Center Auxiliary.
Cremation has taken place and there is no visitation at the funeral home.
Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Charles E. Weir, the son of George L. and Mary (Goetchal) Weir was born June 3, 1920 at Morristown, N.J. He grew up and attended school in Morristown. He joined the Army Air Corps in January of 1942 and flew 35 missions over Germany in B-24’s during W.W. II.
While in the service he met Doris Young and they were married on Sept. 10, 1943 in Merced, Calif. After his discharge they lived in Morristown for a short time before moving to western Nebraska to farm west of Gurley. He farmed until retiring in 1981.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post No. 17 and the Sidney Elk’s Lodge No. 1894. He had also served on the school board at Gurley. He will be remembered as an avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife, Doris of Sidney; his children, Cheryl Hafer of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rod and his wife Mary of McLean, Va. and Susan Stapleton and her husband Mike of Pueblo, Colo.; five grandchildren: one brother, George Weir and his wife Evelyn of Morris Plains, N.J. and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

William D. Poley 1936-2002

William D. Poley, 65, of Sidney and a teacher at WNCC, died at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff Wed. evening, Feb. 6.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Sidney Church of Christ with Pastor Mike Anderson officiating. Cremation has been held. At his own request and his family’s, in lieu of flowers it is asked that donations be made to the William Poley Scholarship Fund at WNCC.
Bill Dean Poley was born March 1, 1936 in Gunnison, Colo., the son of William F. and Lula (Dailey) Poley. They moved to Monte Vista, Colo. in 1944. While there he was very active in sports, setting a State Record in track and excelled in high school wrestling. Bill attended Colorado State University and earned his degree in teaching, majoring in Math and Physics. After graduation he spent 2 years in Nigeria in the Peace Corps. He also taught in Saquach, Colo., Arizona and Wyoming. He spent several years as a surveyor in the coal mines in Wyo. and for a phone company in Iowa and Kansas. The job he loved the most was teaching at WNCC. He came to WNCC in Dec. 1988. He met Terri Mashek in 1989. They were married in July, 1989. He enjoyed cross country skiing, square dancing and dancing in general. He also enjoyed camping, cycling and hiking and running in many races. His short trips on his motorcycle were also a big part of his life, giving him a chance to enjoy nature. Bill was very active in Federation Wrestling helping as a coach. He even participated in some Old Timer Wrestling meets when he was 59. He was a member of Elks Lodge #1894. As the result of an accident in April of 2001, he was left paralyzed. He still enjoyed going to WOW productions and any other activity he could get to. He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Lula Poley.
Survivors include his wife Terri of Sidney; daughter and son-in-law, Charmaine and Taylor Reed of Riverton, Wyo; sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and April Poley of Buffalo, Wyo., Greg and Brenda Bailey of Sidney, Donald Mazer of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and Tyler Bailey of Sidney; sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Ken Renbein of Viola, Wis. and 5 grandchildren.
Gehrig and Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

George Wheelock, Jr. 1944-2002

George Wheelock, Jr., 57, Pueblo, Colo., and a former Sidney resident, died Feb. 1 in Pueblo. His memorial service will be Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. in the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with Pastor Mary Frohs of the First Lutheran Church in Potter officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Potter Cemetery. The funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Cremation was held and there is no visitation.
Memorials have been established to the First Lutheran Church.
George W. Wheelock, Jr., was born June 14, 1944 in Washington, Kan., the son of George and Audrey (Hillers) Wheelock. He attended school in Cheyenne, Wyo. before moving to Sidney, where he graduated in 1962.
In 1963, George married Marie Valdez. He was a cook at the Sidney East Side Cafe until they moved to Pueblo in 1965. In Pueblo, he was employed as a security guard at the Colorado State Hospital for 35 years before retiring in 2001.
George enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and off-road racing with his friends, Kenny Gomez, Fernando and Elfido Salazar, Henry Evans, Edolph Borrego and Andy Phillips.
He served as a volunteer at the Pueblo Horizons Federal Credit Union for 20 years and on the Credit Committee from 1982-1993, being elected to the Board of Directors in 1994.
At the time of his death, George was Chairman of the Board of Directors, having served in that position since 1997. He also served as Chairman of the Asset Liability Management (ALM) Committee. George was a dedicated and active volunteer who was committed to serving the Credit Union and its membership. His fellow Board and Committee members, the management and staff of the union, and members of Pueblo Horizons Federal Credit Union will sadly miss his leadership, dedication and friendship.
Survivors include daughters, Teresa Marie Carillo Wheelock of Kansas and Denise (Roque) Estrada of Texas; siblings, Sheila (Roger) Conley of Nebraska, Kathy Prentice of Kansas, Cindy Golden of Nebraska, Sandra Wheelock of Nebraska, Jim (Sue) Wheelock of Sterling, Colo., Beth (Duane) Kind of Nebraska, Mary (John) Weber of Georgia, John (Lisa) Wheelock of Nebraska, Robert Wheelock of Oklahoma and Tim (Lisa) Wheelock of Potter.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 27 nieces and nephews; 29 great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-niece.
George was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Marie Teresa Valdez Wheelock and brothers-in-law, Dennis Gasseling and Orland “Tiny” Prentice.

Dorothy Iona Herboldsheimer 1921-2002

Dorothy Herboldsheimer, 80, Hutchinson, Kan., died Sunday, Feb. 3. A memorial service was held Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church in Kansas. A funeral will be Thursday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sidney. Burial will follow in the Potter Cemetery. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials can be sent to the First Baptist Church in Sidney.
Dorothy Iona Herboldsheimer was born August 12, 1921 in Carleton, Neb., the daughter of Amos and Anna Hoffert.
She married Archie Herboldsheimer on August 25, 1946 in Sidney. Before her marriage, Dorothy was a school teacher, attending classes at Peru State College and teaching in several country schools in the surrounding area and in Potter. Dorothy worked for the railroad in Topeka, Kan.
She was a devoted wife and loving mother. The family lived in Sidney until 1966 when they were then transferred to Colorado Springs, Colo. where Dorothy taught accordion lessons.
She spent several years with her husband in Korea, Germany and California. Dorothy was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and a charter member of the First Baptist Church in Sidney.
She attended women’s Bible study at The Community Church of Brethern in Hutchinson.
Survivors include her husband, Archie; daughters, Luanna Bell of Aurora, Colo. and Joyce Mueller of Grand Junction, Colo.; sons, Michael James of Long Beach, Calif. and Jeffrey of Hutchinson, Kan.; sisters, Alice Zink of Aurora, Colo. and Twila Petersen of Rapid City, S.D.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Eugene Hoffert on May 18, 1945, and her parents, Anna in 1974 and Amos in 1980.
