Robert R. Marshall 1936-2004

Robert R. Marshall, 67, Salida, Colo., died Wednesday, May 26 at his home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held Tuesday, June 1 at 7 p.m. at the Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home in Salida. Mass of Christian burial will follow Wednesday, June 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church also in Salida. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society in c/o Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, PO Box 925 Salida, CO 81201.
Robert was born June 25, 1936 in Lander, Wyo., the son of John and Mamie Marshall.
He attended St. Patrick’s High School in Sidney.
Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
He was a certified public accountant and owned and operated Robert R. Marshall Accounting Services for many years in Salida. Robert was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. His hobbies included skiing, basketball and fishing.
Survivors include his brother, Bill Marshall of Salida; sister, Betty McMurry of Bar Nunn, Wyo.; one nephew and many nieces.

Rodney G. Lashley 1955-2004

Rod Lashley, 49, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, in a private plane crash near Lander, Wyo. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at the Mitchell High School gymnasium with Pastor Scott Mathis officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to the Scenic Knolls Golf Course in Mitchell, the Nebraska Panhandle Junior Golf Tour or to the Lander search and rescue effort that aided in the search, all in care of Jolliffe Funeral Home, 2104 Broadway, Scottsbluff, NE 69361. Condolences may be left for the family at sympathy@jolliffefuneralhome.com.
Rodney Gene Lashley was born April 27, 1955 at Scottsbluff, to Ralph L. and Jacqueline E. (Lenhart) Lashley. He was baptized at the Morrill Presbyterian Church and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Rod was raised on a farm north of Mitchell where he helped his father farm for many years. He was educated at Fairview 34 and Mitchell schools. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1973. Rod excelled in sports during his high school career, especially basketball. He attended Kearney State College for three years where he met his future wife, Charlene Oberndorfer. They were married on October 15, 1977 at Potter.
Rod worked at various car dealerships prior to owning and operating Lashley Auto Sales in Mitchell for 16 years. In the past few years Rod expanded and opened Lashley Auto Wholesale in Phoenix, Ariz.
Rod was a wonderful, caring father and husband. He loved watching his children at all their athletic events. He also enjoyed golfing, flying, fishing and other family activities. Rod supported the Mitchell community and helped develop Scenic Knolls Golf Course, earning a lifetime membership. Rod and Char were the ultimate hosts when entertaining family and friends in their homes in Scottsbluff and Phoenix. Rod will be greatly missed.
Rod is survived by his daughter, Brooke Lashley of Phoenix, Ariz.; his son, Nathan Lashley of Scottsbluff, presently a student at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.; his mother Jackie Lashley of Mitchell; brothers Tim and Mick Lashley both of Mitchell; and sisters Peg and her husband Harold Strauch of Mitchell and Nancy and her husband Matt Scott of Henry; numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his father Ralph.

Charlene S. Lashley 1957-204

Charlene S. Lashley, 46, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, in a private plane crash near Lander, Wyo. Charlene Sue (Oberndorfer) Lashley was born December 29, 1957 at Sidney, to Normund W. and Adella (Horst) Oberndorfer. She grew up on the family farm and attended school at Potter, graduating in 1976 as class valedictorian. She was involved in numerous sports and activities. She attended Kearney State College on a volleyball scholarship.
On October 15, 1977, she married Rod Lashley at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Potter, where she had also been baptized and confirmed. They lived in Mitchell until 1998, when they moved to Scottsbluff where she designed and decorated their new home, loving to share it with family and friends.
In addition to being a caring wife, loving mother and wonderful homemaker, she worked at Strong Pharmacy and later assisted Rod in establishing and running Lashley Auto Sales in Mitchell. She obtained her real estate license and worked with Century 21 until she and Rod established Lashley Auto Wholesale in Phoenix, Ariz. Char also worked part time at the Phoenician Golf Resort in Phoenix. She was an avid gardener and golfer. She earned two golf club championships at Mitchell’s Scenic Knolls and three at Scotts Bluff Country Club. Char was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Morrill, Neb. Her greatest joy was watching her children participate in their athletic activities. Char will be greatly missed.
Char is survived by her daughter, Brooke Lashley of Phoenix; her son, Nathan Lashley of Scottsbluff, presently a student at the University of Arizona in Tucson; her mother Adella Oberndorfer of Potter; and her sisters Barb and her husband Toby Meade of Joplin, Mo.; and Peggy Oberndorfer of Omaha; numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her father and an infant brother, Mark.

Richard Hazlitt 1949-2004

Richard Hazlitt, 65, a longtime Sidney resident died at his home in Sidney on Tuesday, June 1, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney with Fr. John Andrews of the Christ Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends can call at the funeral home today from noon until 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the family’s choice.
Gehrig Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
H. Richard Hazlitt was born on February 7, 1939 in Sidney, the son of Harry and Esther (Carlson) Hazlitt. He was raised on a farm south west of Sidney. He attended Sidney Public Schools and graduated from the Sidney High School in 1957. He attended the Parks Business School in Denver and graduated in 1958. He was married to Carol Bayne on February 14, 1959 in Dalton and they moved to Rock River, Wyo. where he worked in the oil fields. Rich and Carol then returned to Sidney and he worked for Highland Electric and opened a Radio and T.V. Shop. He then worked for KN Energy as an Electrical contractor. Rich started Hazlitts Electric in 1970 and owned and operated this business until 1990 at which time he went to work for the City of Sidney. With Rich’s expertise and talent in the electrical field he continued to do custom electrical jobs for many people. He was a family man who built a life of loving and caring for his wife, children and all family and friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Osborn of Sidney and Cherie and her husband Charlie Cox of Eaton, Colo.; one son Rich Hazlitt of Sidney; two brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and Ann Hazlitt of Sidney and Rodney Hazlitt of Pierce, Colo.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys and Ray Belford of Cloverdale, Calif. and Bonita and Karl Kobbins of San Bernadino, Calif. and Vicki Mapel of Pierce, Colo.; grandchildren, Kyle, Pam and Ryan Osborn, Malory and Mindy McMillen, Anthony and Haley Cox, Felicia Hart and Christopher Willy; and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, Don Hazlitt, one daughter, Susie McMillen and one granddaughter, Melissa McMillen.

Major Warren J. Bale 1917-2004

Major Warren J. Bale, 86, Bayou Vista, Texas, died May 24, 2004. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, May 26 at the Oakland Cemetery in Navosota, Texas with Rev. J.K. “Tim” Bruegger officiating. Burial followed under the direction of the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque, Texas.
Warren a.k.a. Pop Red was born June 14, 1917 in Lodgepole, the son of Alvin and Mary Bale. He played football and graduated from Lodgepole High School. In 1942 he graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors of Science in Petroleum Engineering. In 1943, he was inducted into the Army Air Force and sent to Montana State University to train in the 317th College Training Detachment. From there he went to Randolph Field in San Antonio, Texas to finish his training.
In 1944 Warren received orders to join the 15th Air Force in Italy. He was the lead navigator in the 451 Bomber Group 49th Wing 727 Squadron B24’s. Warren successfully completed 35 bombing missions in North and South France, Rome-Arno, the Balkans, Germany, North Apennines and the PO Valley.
Warren received many honors for his duty in the Air Force, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, One Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal & Three Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Unit Badge and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
In 1946, he was discharged in Houston at Ellington Field where he worked as an engineer for the City of Houston. In 1951, Warren was recalled to San Antonio to train airmen to be top navigators. In 1952, for the Korean Conflict he was in the Mid Air Refueling Squadron.
From 1956-1960, Major Bale used his skills as a hurricane hunter in Bermuda. Then from 1960-1965, he became a navigator instructor at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Finally from 1966-1969, Warren worked at the Headquarters for Space and Missile Systems in Los Angeles, Calif.
Major Bale retired in 1969 and moved to Bayou Vista to be near family.
He enjoyed grounded living on the water and making agate wind chimes.
Survivors include his step-sons, A.J. and wife Rosean Brown of Bayou Vista and A.E. and wife Garland Williams of College Station, Texas; sister, Mary Jane and husband Roy Grimes of Lodgepole; brother, Glen Bale of Lodgepole; sister-in-law, Ruth Bale of Bayou Vista and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Hazel Bale in May of 2003.

Wilmena B. Lowe 1912-2004

Wilmena B. Lowe, a former resident of Sidney, passed away in Tucson, Ariz., May 30, 2004. A private memorial service will be held in Tucson on June 19, and her ashes will be buried with her husbands in the Grace St. Paul’s Church memorial garden. If you wish, memorials may be sent in her name to the Sidney Public Library, 1112 12th Avenue, Sidney NE, 69162 or to the charity of your choice. Wilmena B. Lowe was born in Cripple Creek, Colo. on Feb. 22, 1912, the second child of Howard and Daisy Kennedy. She moved to Sidney as a small child, attended Sidney schools and graduated from Sidney High School. She attended one year at Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tenn. In 1930 she was married to Jack H. Lowe, who preceded her in death as did her parents and two sisters.
She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Sidney, Chapters BO and FR of PEO, King’s Daughters as well as various community activities.
Willy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family.
Wilmena is survived by her daughter, Sally L. Heinlein (Joseph) of Tucson; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Helene Schoettger 1938-2004

Helene Schoettger, 85, of Oshkosh, died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. A Requiem for family and friends will be 10 a.m., Friday, June 11, at St. George’s Episcopal Church and a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh with the Very Reverend Gary Young officiating. Interment will be in Ash Hollow Cemetery near Lewellen. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The family requests no flowers and memorials may be given to the Garden County Ambulance Fund. Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh is in charge of arrangements.
Helene was born on December 5, 1918 in Bennett County, South Dakota to Mark and Effie (Hale) Usher. She attended county schools, Bennett High School and Mitchell Business College.
On January 1, 1938, she married Bert Schoettger and they had six children, four of whom survive her. They owned and operated several businesses until their retirement. They spent these years in the Lake McConaughy area.
After Bert’s death in 1992, Helene continued to live in Oshkosh with her youngest daughter and family.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Jerry Schoettger of Longmont, Colo., Bonnie McKee of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bert Schoettger, Jr. of Denver, Colo. and Mary Bules of Oshkosh; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert; her parents; two children; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Robert Charles Wait 1923-2004

Robert Charles Wait, 81, died Monday, May 17, 2004 at Pioneer Care Center in Brigham City, Utah. A memorial service was held Saturday, May 22 at Myers Mortuary in Brigham with Rev. David Hiester officiating. Military honors were conducted by VFW Post #1695.
Robert was born April 6, 1923 in Sidney.
Bob, a.k.a. Berries, served his country in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War. After leaving the Navy and graduating from the University of Nebraska, he worked for Marathon Oil Company for 43 years.
He married Lois Thomsen in Sidney on Nov. 11, 1965. The couple were married for 38 years.
Bob was active in many organizations including the Masons and the Boy Scouts of America. He was also Exalted Ruler of the Sidney Elks, District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Nebraska Elks Club and a member of the Sidney City Council. He was a life- long member of the United Methodist Church.
Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, his grandchildren and gardening.
Survivors include his daughters, Julie Wymore of Riverdale, Utah and Janie Maust of Ft. Collins, Colo.; sons, Bill Wait of Casper, Wyo. and Chuck Wait of Minneapolis, Minn. and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Millicent Wait and daughter, Debbie.

Calvin D. Thomas 1939-2004

Calvin D. Thomas, 64, Peetz, Colo., died at his home Monday, June 7, 2004. His funeral will be Saturday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Peetz Community Methodist Church in Peetz with Rev. Beverly Webb officiating. Cremation will be held following the service. Gehrig Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established to the Peetz Community Methodist Church or Memorial Health Center Hospice.
Calvin was born Nov. 13, 1939 in Moorhead, Minn., the son of Don and Atha (Martin) Thomas. He attended school in Stanberry, Mo. and graduated high school in 1958.
Calvin enlisted in the United States Air Force on Jan. 28, 1961 at Clinton Sherman AFB in Burns Flat, Okla. He was stationed with the 70th Airborne Missile Maintenance, and received honorable discharge on Jan. 27, 1967.
Calvin married Sylvia Simmons on Oct. 13, 1977 in Las Vegas, Nev.
He worked as a truck driver in the over-the-road transportation industry.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Thomas of Peetz; son, Donald Thomas of Fairborn, Ohio; daughters, Debra Null and husband Jack, Betty Taylor and husband Kevin and Judy Reynolds and husband Randy, all of Fairborn; mother, Mildred Thomas of Auburn, Wash.; brothers, Martin and Gary of Blair, Neb., Max of Plattsmouth, Neb., Raymond of Lemoore, Calif., James of Guymon, Okla., Darrel of Phoenix, Ariz. and Rex of Kenai, Alaska; sisters, Donna O’Bannon of Auburn and Linda Glenn of Tacoma, Wash. and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; nephew, Jeffery and grandson, Steven.
