Ruth Iva Munshaw 1916-2004

Ruth Iva Munshaw, 87, Gering, Neb., died Monday, June 28, 2004 at Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dalton Cemetery in Dalton with Bud Gillespie and Eldin Wells officiating.
Friends may call at the Gering Memorial Chapel between 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday, July 3 and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 5. Memorials have been established to the Farm and Ranch Museum, Faith Lutheran Church in Dalton or to Prairie Haven Hospice.
Ruth was born Dec. 10, 1916 in Douglas, Wyo., the daughter of Alvin and Etta (Wright) Adair. She grew up and received her education in several Western Nebraska communities.
In 1935, Ruth married John O. Muhr. To this union two sons were born, Wesley and Charlie.
She later married Lawrence “Friday” Folden who preceded her in death. She married Earl Munshaw who also preceded her in death on June 25, 2000.
Ruth attended nursing school at the Alliance Hospital and worked at the Methodist Hospital in Scottsbluff before moving back to Dalton. She has been a resident of Heritage Health Care for the past seven years.
Ruth was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Dalton, was a cub scout leader, a member of the Dalton Garden Club, Order of Eastern Star, a Ritual Team Member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the Lion’s Club Auxiliary.
She loved to travel, hunt, fish and garden. Ruth always had beautiful flowers and seemed to be able to make anything grow.
Survivors include her son and daughters-in-law, Charles and Barbara Muhr of Gering and Eva Muhr of Morrill, Neb., stepdaughter and husband, Peg and Jim Troidl of Dalton; grandchildren, Kim and Jeff Becker of Scottsbluff, Linda and Tom Lawrence of Fountain Hills, Ariz., William and Josie Muhr of Morrill, Eldon and Thelma Muhr of Alliance, Neb., Glenn and Lori Muhr of Harrisburg, Neb. and Gene and Kathy Muhr of Morrill; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lawrence “Friday” Folden and Earl Munshaw; son, Wesley Muhr; brothers, Carl Adair, Faye Adair, Melvin Wheeler and Marvin Wheeler; stepson, Rick Munshaw and an infant grandson.

Marshall Gordon Hall 1915-2004

Marshall Gordon Hall, 89, Sterling, Colo., died Monday, June 28, 2004 in Sterling. A vigil and rosary will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at the Tennant Funeral Home in Sterling. A mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, July 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Jim Baird officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dalton.
Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established to the American Heart Association in c/o Tennant Funeral Home, Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.
Marshall was born June 8, 1915 in Waterloo, Neb., the son of Earl and Cassana (Goodyear) Hall. He graduated from Logan County High School in Sterling, spent two years at Aggies College and attended Barnes School of Business in Denver, Colo.
Marshall married Kathryn DeMay on Jan. 25, 1936 in McCook, Neb.
He owned and operated E.T. Hall Implement and was manager for the large Townhome complex.
Marshall was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, the Sterling Elks Lodge, American Legion, the Lions Club in Dalton, Barbershop Quartets and the Softball Commission and was a former Sterling City Council member.
Survivors include his daughters, Barbara Michieli and husband Ronald of Sterling, Marilyn Moncrief and husband Kenneth of Sidney, Kathleen Littler and husband Henry of Sterling and Jude Trafford of Lewiston, Maine; sons, Tom Hall of Denver and John Hall and wife Barbara of Hudson Fall N.Y.; brother, Donald Hall and wife Mary Jo of Sterling; sister, Julia Whitcomb and husband Clay of Sterling; special friend, Lorene Tetsell; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents; wife; sisters, Marjorie Seckler Hideman and Jean Peters and brother, Robert Hall.

Maxine M. Louks 1920-2004

Maxine M. Louks, 84, Sidney and formerly of Gordon, Neb., died Thursday July 1, 2004 at Memorial Health Center in Sidney. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Gordon with Rev. Corey Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Gordon Cemetery.
Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may call Monday, July 5 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home in Gordon.
Memorials have been established to MHC Hospice, Stephen Ministries at Holy Trinity in Sidney, the United Methodist Church, Tri-State Old Time Cowgirls in Gordon or to the donor’s choice.
Maxine M. Louks was born in Neligh, Neb. on April 23, 1920, the daughter of Thomas H. and Pearl Margaret Beckley. The family soon moved to a farm near Brunswick, Neb. where she attended country school from K-8th grade and then two years of high school in Brunswick.
At the age of 17, Maxine began her two years of employment at the Kenneth Hulls family and then worked for the Ned and Folsom Gates family until her marriage to Richard W. “Dick” Louks on Oct. 1, 1939.
During their early life together, the couple lived in Crawford, Neb. where their daughter, Shirley Rae, was born. When they moved to the Brandis Ranch, Maxine honed her cooking skills.
In 1956 they purchased the Bowl Mar Lanes, where for 25 years, many enjoyed Maxine’s homemade pies and soups. Not one to be idle, she then served lunch at the grade school and later helped “kick off” the breakfast program there.
Maxine was always active in the community, the Methodist Church, Rebeckah’s, Tri-State Old Time Cowboys and Cowgirls and at the Cowboy Museum in the city park. She was a 1972 charter member of the Tri-State Cowgirls and received the Outstanding Senior Citizen Award in 1997 from the Chamber of Commerce.
In 1999, she and Dick received the Cowboys Hall Award for extraordinary effort in promoting and preserving the cowboy heritage and way of life that contributes to our western community.
In May 2000, Maxine and Dick moved to Sidney to be close to family for health reasons. Maxine soon added a host of new friends as she became active at The Cheyenne County Community Center, Western Heritage and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and enjoyed helping the Kings Daughters.
Maxine also enjoyed entertaining, family, friends and many Sheridan County visits, as she and Dick never knew a stranger. Music, reading, handwork and a good movie, but most of all cooking and baking for all of us brought joy to her days.
She dearly loved and enjoyed her family and all children whom she considered as part of an extended family of grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Rae Flohr and husband Jack of Sidney; one grandson, Jay R. Flohr of Sidney; one sister, Ione “Becky” Patterson and husband Jim of Oshkosh, Neb.; two brothers, Leo J. “Jack” Beckley and wife Betty of Bassett, Neb. and Thomas H. “Dude” Beckley and wife Dorothy of Saquache, Colo. and sisters-in-law, Mrs. Raymond “Nettie” Beckley and Mrs. Colonel “Mary” Beckley of Wenatchee, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. “Dick” Louks; parents, Tom and Pearl Beckley; brothers, Raymond “Bub” Beckley and Colonel “Punk” Beckley and sisters, Esther Beckley Leggett and Ilene Beckley.

DeLoris Neumann 1918-2004

DeLoris Neumann (Storjohann), 86, Chappell, passed away on June, 30 in Sterling, Colo.
A memorial service will be held July 7 at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Chappell. Private inurnment will follow at the Chappell Cemetery.
Chaney-Reager Funeral Home in Sterling is in charge of arrangements.
DeLoris was born in rural Holt County, near Phoenix, Neb. on June 30, 1918 to John and Alice (Evans) Storjohann. She attended elementary school in rural Holt County and graduated from Atkinson Nebraska High School in 1936. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1941. At the University she was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority.
During World War II, DeLoris contributed to the war effort by serving as head dietitian at the Glen L. Martin Bomber Plant in Omaha. This top security job was a very responsible position for a recent young college graduate.
DeLoris married Robert G. Neumann on April 19, 1947 in Omaha. Shortly thereafter they moved to the Chappell area. To this union three children were born; Robert F. (deceased at infancy), Joe R. and James A. Neumann.
She taught at numerous area schools for over 30 years; including schools at Madison, O’Neill, Big Springs, Chappell and Sunol, with her last teaching assignment at Rush Creek Country School. She enjoyed teaching and working with young people.
She was active in PEO Chapter CI, Colorado retired Teachers Association, Sigma Kappa Alumni, VFW Auxiliary and was a leader in 4-H, Cub Scouts and participated in many other community activities.
DeLoris was preceded in death by her husband Robert and infant son Robert.
She is survived by her two sons Joe R., of Lincoln and James A. and wife Mary Ann Neumann of Centennial, Colo.; sisters Betty Stewart of Lincoln, Lotus Cooper and husband Frank of Canton, Ohio; sister-in-law Mary Hardessen and husband Carroll of Brule, Neb.; and one granddaughter.

James Markel 1937-2003

James Markel, 66, of Chappell, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 20, at the Memorial Health Center, Extended Care in Sidney.
Service will be held at 10 a.m. today in the St.Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chappell with Father Jim Novakowski officiating. Burial will be held at the Chappell Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the Memorial Health Center Hospice in Sidney, the Chappell Volunteer Fire Department or the Chappell Library.
Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell is in charge of arrangements.
James Edward Markel was born July 2, 1937 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Edward and Jeanne (Jewitt) Markel. They later moved to Lodgepole where Jim attended school and graduated in 1954. He then went to Fountain Valley prep school for one year and continued on to the University of Colorado for two years.
On August 6, 1957 he was united in marriage to Paula Louise Swanson and they made their home in Chappell.
After his marriage Jim farmed in the Chappell and Lodgepole area his entire life. Jim was a member of many local organizations, and they included the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Chappell Fire Department, and the Chappell Jaycees. He was a thirty-year member of the Sidney Elks Club, and the Amateur Trapshooting Association. He was an avid hunter, trap shooter and fisherman.
Survivors include four sons, Chris Markel of Chappell, Doug and Amy Jo Markel of Chappell, David and Carol Markel of Dayton, Ohio and Andy Markel of Lodgepole; four brothers, Dan and Linda Markel of Lodgepole, Steve and Jenny Markel of Arvada Colo., Bill and Sharon Markel of Castle Rock, Colo. and Bob and Brenda Markel of Vinita Oka.; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his father Edward, his wife Paula and his brother Mike Markel.

Edna Wilt 1917-2003

Edna Wilt, 86, of Sidney, died Friday morning, Dec. 19, at Beverly Healthcare in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today in the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with Pastor Edgar Schambach of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
Edna Evelyn Marie Wilt was born June 9, 1917 in Dalton, the daughter of Andrew and Allie (Schwartz) Ladine. She moved to Sidney as a child and attended the Sidney Public Schools.
On September 28, 1940 she was united in marriage to Max V. Wilt in Sidney. She was a homemaker most of her life and also worked at the Princess Dress Shop in Sidney.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Women, and Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include her daughter Carolyn Barnhart and husband John of Lodgepole; three grandchildren, Debbie Keller and Brad of Sidney, Sharon Rohde and Mitch of Sidney, and Steven Barnhart of Lewellen; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer Baker of Omaha, Neb., Josh Baker, and Garth Rohde both of Sidney.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Max, four brothers, and three sisters.

Carl H. Farmer 1912-2003

Carl H. Farmer, 91, of Sidney, died at Memorial Health Center, Extended Care in Sidney on Thursday, Dec. 25.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney with Rev. Bob Dahlgren officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Greenwood Cemetery. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.
Carl Houston Farmer was born on February 25, 1912 at Stillwell, Okla. the son of Andrew and Stella (Reeves) Farmer. He attended school in Stillwell and at a young age he moved with his family to Denver, Colo.
In 1931 he was married to Violet Delve in Denver. He worked at Owens Construction in Denver until 1943. He then moved to Sidney and went to work at the Sioux Army Depot as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. His wife Violet preceded him in death in 1957. He was then associated with Gene Wriston in trailer sales and repair.
He was married to Pearl Farrell in 1959 in Denver. He then moved to Bailey, Colo. and operated a laundromat and drove a school bus. His wife Pearl died in 1992. He moved to Cottonwood, Ariz. and lived there until moving back to Sidney in 1995. He was a life time member of the Elks. He enjoyed dancing of any kind and was an avid bowler. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and being around people.
Survivors include three sons and their spouses, Carl, Jr. and Jan of Dalton, Duane and Cheryl of Sidney and Marvin and Barbi of Northfield, Minn.; two daughters and their husbands, Wanda and Mickey Kaduk of Westmont, Il., Carletta and Jerry Burton of Timbo, Ariz.; one step-son and his wife, Ervin and Connie Farrell of Arvada, Colo.; one step-daughter, Michaela Hanke of Cottonwood, Ariz.; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; one daughter, Beverly Nightingale; two step-daughters, Sharon Cresler and Darla Segelke; and one grandson, Michael Branch.
Gehrig Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
