Ronald Ovenden 1932-2003

Ronald Lee Ovenden, 71, died at his home in Sarasota, Fla., December 24. Visitation will be held January 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Park Hotel in Charlotte N.C. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in East Matthews, N.C. January 3.
Ronald was born October 5, 1932 in Hastings, Neb. to Ralph and Velma Ovenden of Tecumseh, Neb. He attended Sidney High School and after graduating from the University of Nebraska with a degree in civil engineering he worked in engineering and construction in several southeastern states.
Ronald was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Sharon Ovenden.
He is survived by a son, Steven Ovenden of Townshend, Vt., three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Leona Bertels 1912-2003

Leona Bertels, 91, of Sidney, died Monday, Dec. 29, at Memorial Health Center in Sidney.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney, with Pastor Edgar L. Schambach officiating. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday, Jan. 2, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Memorials have been established to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Leona Christina Bertels, the daughter of George C. and Mary (Jurgens) Thompson, was born January 29, 1912 in Sidney. She joined the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in March of 1923.
She attended the Sidney Schools and after high school she went to work for North Western Bell Telephone Company for seven years. One night while at work there was a bad lightning storm and she was struck in the head causing her to go deaf. In 1937 she went to live with her older sister to help her. On June 15, 1939 she was united in marriage to William Bertels in Sidney. Later on they moved to Byers, Colo. and lived there for six years before moving to Kansas for 13 years, and returned to Sidney in 1963.
Survivors include her son George Bertels of La Grande, Ore.; two grandsons in Oregon; one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William, two sisters Helen Johnson, and Freda Dimick.

Inez E. Neary 1919-2003

Inez E. Neary, 84, a long-time Sidney resident, died at Memorial Health Center, Extended Care Monday, Dec. 29, 2003. Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery with Pastor Herschal Bryant of the Grace Baptist Church officiating.
Gehrig Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice.
Inez Emma Neary was born June 24, 1919 in Sidney, the daughter of George and Frida (Moseman) Niemann. She was raised and attended school in Sidney.
Inez married Kenneth Neary in Sidney in 1940. Shortly after, she moved to San Diego, Calif. and was employed as a bank teller. She returned to Sidney in 1985.
Inez enjoyed needle point, crocheting, working in her yard and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include her son, Duane Neary and wife Glenda of Nampa, Idaho; sister, Willa Moeller; one grandson; one granddaughter; five great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews.
Inez was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Bill Neimann; sisters, Elsie Schaffert and Helen Allison and niece and nephew, Betty Happen and Larry Allison.

Donald Chaon 1945-2003

Donald Leon Chaon, of Oak, Neb., died December 29 at his home.
Services will be Friday, January 2, at 2 p.m. at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings, Neb. with Pastor Paul Knott officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, in Hastings.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Condolences may be sent to www.lbvfh.com.

Donald was born October 6, 1945 in San Francisco, Calif. to Donald J.A. and Alice E. (Herboldsheimer) Chaon. He graduated from Potter High School and served in the United States Navy from June 11, 1963 to September 27, 1967. On September 9, 1967, he married Carolyn Joy Kesselring in Sidney. He worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad, lived in eastern and western Nebraska and Colorado. He attended the Berean Bible Church in Hastings. He enjoyed wildlife, bird watching, photography, fishing, gardening and collecting western memorabilia and stamps.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn Chaon of Oak, Neb.; son Dion Lee and wife Jami Chaon and Darin Leon and wife Mendy Chaon; daughters Melissa Joy Chaon and Tammy Jo and husband Jay Herringer, all of Hastings; mother Alice E. Chaon; brother Larry E. and Cindy Chaon and sister Kathleen and husband Emil Assad all of Sidney.

Laura Brauer 1902-2003

Laura Brauer, 101, formerly of Lodgepole, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Yuma Life Care Center in Yuma, Colo.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 in the Zion Lutheran Church in Chappell with Pastor Philip Found officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Lodgepole.
Friends may call today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Memorials have been established to American Diabetes Association, or the donor’s choice.
Laura M. Brauer was born on June 24, 1902 near Johnson, Neb. the daughter of David and Emma (Michaelis) Phelps. She was united in marriage to Albert Brauer on June 29, 1922 in Sidney. They farmed south of Sidney before moving south of Castle Rock, Colo. where they operated a dairy farm and ranch. Later on they operated meat packing plants in Chappell, Gurley and Bushnell before retiring in Lodgepole in 1973.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Chappell.
Survivors include three sons, Norman and wife Sissy of Scott, La., Virgil of Franktown, Colo., and Ivan and wife Joyce of Yuma; one daughter, Dolores Harmes and husband Vernon of Bushnell, Neb.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Albert, two sons, David and Merle, and two grandsons.

Brandy Lee Purviance Miller 1979-2004

Brandy Lee Purviance Miller, 24, of Gurley, died Friday, Jan. 2 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church with Reverend Thomas Hall officiating. Visitation will be held at the Colyer Funeral Home today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The casket will be closed at the church service. Those who wish may direct memorial contributions to the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home.
Brandy was born on February 12, 1979 in Torrington, Wyo., the daughter of Terry and Emma (Holcomb) Purviance. She grew up and attended school at Morrill and Torrington. She graduated from Torrington High School in 1997 and went on to attend cosmetology school at Eastern Wyoming College. She also received a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate from Torrington Community Hospital working for the Goshen Care Center and at the Country Villa. Brandy married Kurt "Matt" Miller on May 17, 2002 in Torrington. The couple made thier home in Gurley. Brandy was employed at the Memorial Health Care Extended Care in Sidney.
Brandy enjoyed her job, her co-workers, patient care, four-wheeling, crafts and loved spending time with her sons.
Brandy is survived by her husband; two sons, Quentin Matthew and Dylan Matthew all of Gurley: her parents, Terry and Emma Purviance of Torrington: grandmother, Viola Holcomb of Torrington; two sisters, Bobbie Purviance and Jennifer Matheson: and one brother, Levi Purviance, all of Torrington.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Markus and Elda Purviance and grandfather, LeRoy Holcomb.

Edna Gentry 1906-2004

Edna Gentry, 97, of Lodgepole, died Saturday, Jan. 3, at Memorial Health Center, Extended Care in Sidney, where she had resided for the past six years.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with Pastor Jeff McGowan officiating. Interment will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Lodgepole.
Edna Margarette Gentry was born June 10, 1906 in Manning, Iowa to John and Bertha (Gottsch) Bahr. She attended school in Manning and moved with her family to a farm south of Sunol in the early 1920’s.
She married Ralph Gentry on May 28, 1924 in Fort Morgan, Colo. Edna and Ralph had three children, Betty, Judy and Gerald. They farmed south of Lodgepole until retirement in 1966 when they moved to Lodgepole.
Edna was a wonderful homemaker who loved to cook and sew and teach her children and grandchildren. She had a strong faith and was known for her exceptional kindness. She was a member of the Worldwide Church of God.
Survivors include her son Gerald Gentry and his wife Karen of Lodgepole; son-in-law Jeff McGowan of Peoria, Ill.; brother John Bahr of Sidney; sister Florence Selchert of Sterling, Colo..; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph; brother Henry; sisters Elsie, Alta, and Eldora; daughters Betty and Judy; and granddaughter Ronda.

Donald L. Wilson 1942-2004

Donald L. Wilson, 61, a resident of Wichita, Kan., died at LakePoint Nursing Home in Wichita on Saturday, Jan. 3. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney. Burial will be held at the Dalton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the family will be at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. to receive friends. Memorials have been established to LakePoint Nursing Home and Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita.
Donald Lee Wilson was born on April 24, 1942 in Bridgeport, Neb. the son of Harry and Ellen Wilson. Don was a sporting enthusiast. He never missed an opportunity to watch a ball game or attend an annual elk hunt.
He loved a good steak dinner and an evening of dancing. He was a warm and comfortable friend to all who knew him, which was quite a feat, as there was no stranger in his presence. He was the type of husband, father, son and brother that we should all strive to be. Don’s life and the way he lived will leave a lasting impression to all who knew him. He will be thoroughly missed and loved forever.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Wichita; sons and daughters-in-law, Konn and Brenda Wilson of O’Fallen, Mo., Kory and Karen Wilson of Wichita; daughter and son-in-law, Kylie and Dustan Stupka of Wichita; grandchildren, Zac, Audrey, Kaden and Kamden Wilson and Brigdon and Brock Stupka; his brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Eloise Wilson of Loveland, Colo.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita Ring of Sidney, Peggy and Phil Covalt, Ellen and LaMond Lessman, and his mother-in-law Erna Lessman all of Broadwater.

Arlene E. Louthan

Arlene E. Louthan, 80, Denver, Colo., died Dec. 29, 2003 from lung cancer. A service celebrating her life will be held Monday, Jan. 12 at 2:30 p.m. at the Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary in Littleton, Colo.
Memorials have been suggested to the Hospice of Metro Denver.
Arlene was the second of 12 children and helped raise her brothers and sisters.
She and husband, Bill Louthan, owned Kearney Cleaners in Denver for 20 years.
Arlene was famous for her smiles and driven by a passion for perfection and a love of music.
Survivors include her daughters, Sonja and husband Jim Drugan, Jennifer and husband Rob Christopher; sisters, Renee and husband Tom Backus of Aurora, Colo., Beverly Brungardt of Northglenn, Colo. and Cynthia and husband Marty Knowles of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, Gillis and wife Lois Sebold of Sidney; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1974.
