John Raymond Franssen
ARAPAHOE -- John Raymond Franssen, 60, died Sunday (Sept. 21, 2003) at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was born Dec. 18, 1942, to Joseph J. and Alverna L. (Fablinger) Franssen in Denver, Colo. He was raised in Denver and attended Mapelton High School and graduated with the class of 1961. After finishing school he worked for the Colorado Public Service Department building transmission towers and the Colorado State Highway Department.
On May 8, 1970, he married Charlene K. "Sherry" Harris in Boulder, Colo. He worked for a number of years with StorageTec at Louisville, Colo. After retiring they moved to Arapahoe in 1998. He was a member of the H-E-A Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Marilyn Cain and Kay Hefty.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry of Arapahoe; two sons, Buck and wife, Carolyn Franssen of Lafayette, Colo., and Jason and wife, Travi Franssen of Arapahoe; one brother, Bob and wife, Georgia Franssen of Monroe, Wash.; two sisters, Sue and husband, Russ Steele of Alliance and Joann and husband, Marvin Beatty of Arnold; brother-in-law, Marvin Cain of Arnold; and three grandchildren.
Services are Friday, 10:30 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Arapahoe with the Rev. Robert Barnhill of the St. Germanus Catholic Church of Arapahoe officiating. Inurnment will be in Arapahoe Cemetery in Arapahoe.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
Memorials may be given in his name to the H-E-A Volunteer Fire Department.

Maurine (Claus) McNiece
SUN CITY, Ariz. -- Maurine (Claus) McNeice, 88, died Sunday (Sept. 14, 2003) in Sun City, Ariz.
She was born Sept. 14, 1903, to Conrad and Millie (Spahn) Claus in Sutton. The family moved to Culbertson when she was young and she graduated from Culbertson High School in 1932.
On Sept. 17, 1932, she married Winston "Pete" McNeice. The couple resided in Nebraska, Colorado, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
She was a member of the Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston in 1975; her parents and one brother, Dale Claus.
Survivors include two sons, Marvin of Rochester, N.Y., and Robert of California; one brother, Jim; sisters-in-law, Iris Gummere of Stratton, Eileen Moore, Mavis Peterson and Jesslyn Stubbs, all of Culbertson; one brother-in-law, Berwin McNeice and wife, Berniece of Sun City; several grandsons, one granddaughter and great-grandchildren.
Services were Sept. 18, 2003, at Lakeview Methodist Church in Sun City. Interment was in Sun City.

Alberta I. Steffan
Alberta I. Steffen, 87, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at McCook Community Hospital.
She was born on March 28, 1916, in Diller to Albert B. and Emily I. (Wilcox) Steffen. She lived all of her life in Southwest Nebraska.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Emily Steffen; and two brothers, Rex A. and Neal L. Steffen.
Survivors include her brother, Glen Steffen and wife, Esther of Ft. Collins, Colo.; one sister, Opal Tincher of McCook; and sister-in-law, Patricia Steffen of Arlington, Texas.
Funeral services are Monday, 11 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with Pastor Daniel Spearow officiating. Burial will be in the Culbertson Cemetery.
Visitation is Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., and Sunday, 3-7 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.
Memorials may be given in her name.

Regina 'Mxine'Bishop
Regina "Maxine" Bishop died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at her home in McCook. She was 83 years old.
Maxine was born on March 5, 1920, at Hildreth, to Elvaro Madison and Esther Mabel (Mason) Carpenter. The family moved to Wauneta when she was five years old. She graduated from Wauneta High School in 1938. Shortly after graduation, she traveled by train to Los Angeles, Calif., and attended Woodbury College where she graduated with a business degree in 1939.
She returned to Wauneta and was employed by Federal Land Bank and then Wauneta Falls Bank. On July 9, 1944, she married Archie Merle Bishop. They lived in various locations including a farm south of Hamlet, Denver, Colo., and Flint, Mich., before locating to the McCook community.
She was also employed by McCook Community Hospital as a receptionist and worked in the office of the West Sale Barn. While Maxine's children were young she was involved in helping with 4-H and Rainbow Girls. In her spare time she enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing, cats, horses, and baby calves.
She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and Methodist Quilting Group.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Elvaro and Esther Carpenter; and her husband, Archie on Dec. 12, 2002.
Survivors include her son, Allan M. Bishop of Fort Smith, Ark.; three daughters, Linda and husband, Gary Williamson, of Spokane, Wash., twin daughters, Margaret Cooper of Tempe, Ariz., and Margery Bishop and husband, Wilson Wesbrook of Douglas, Kan.; two sisters, Irene Frattasio of Pembroke, Mass. and Colleen and husband, Bill Palmer, of Florence, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given in her name to the YMCA, McCook Community Hospital Home Health/Hospice or to the givers choice.
Funeral Service will be Thursday, Sept. 18, 9:30 a.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, at 11:30 a.m. CST.
Visitation will be today until 5 p.m. and Wednesday 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alberta I. Steffen, 87, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at McCook Community Hospital.

ARLINGTON -- Inez G. Walrod, 88, died Saturday (Sept. 13, 2003) at her home in Arlington.
She was born Aug. 22, 1915, to John and Alma (Perkins) Underhill in Cornell. She was a graduate of Trenton High School and worked as a practical nurse in Stratton. She moved to Beaver City in 1945 where her family operated a restaurant. She then moved to Fremont in 1960 and was a cosmetologist. IN 1966 she moved to Arlington where she operated a beauty shop until retiring in 1978.
On Sept. 21, 1935, she married Ralph Hinkle in Trenton. He preceded her in death.
On Feb. 7, 1975, she married Melvin J. "Buck" Walrod. He died in 1987.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, north of Arlington, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 8332 Auxiliary of Arlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and two brothers, Raymond and Robert Underhill.
Survivors include one son, Don and wife, Marcia Hinkle of Omaha; one daughter, Charlotte and husband, Irvin Easom of Ontario, Ore.; one brother, Lawrence and wife, Bethel Underhill of Nehalem, Ore.; one sister, Laurene and husband, Boyd Giesselman of Arlington; and four grandchildren and six grandchildren.
Services are Thursday, 9:30 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, north of Arlington, with the Rev. Rick Kanoy officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m., at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Visitation is Wednesday, 2-9 p.m., at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington and Thursday at the church, 9 a.m., until service time.
Memorials may be given to Arlington Rescue Squad or St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Marguerite Eleanor Temple
NORCATUR -- Marguerite Eleanor Temple, 92, died Monday (Sept. 22, 2003) at Cedar Living Center in Oberlin.
She was born Nov. 12, 1910, to John Henry and Mary (Hockett Mapes) New in Colby, Kan.
On Dec. 21, 1929, she married Gerald Temple.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald; and three brothers, Bob, Art and Pete.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald and wife, Jerry Temple of Norcatur and Don and wife, Janet Temple of Carson City, Nev.; one sister, Leone Billings of Chico, Calif.; and eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Services are Friday, 11 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with Jim Plotts officiating. Interment is in Norcatur Cemetery in Norcatur.
Visitation is Thursday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday, 8 a.m., until service time.

Clint Dean Flock
WICHITA, Kan. -- Clint Dean Flock, 20, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) in Wichita, Kan.
He was born Aug. 23, 1983, to Dean and Theresa (Barton) Flock in Wichita. He worked as a manufacturing assembler in Wichita.
Survivors include his parents; one sister, Shannon; grandparents, Cal and Nancy Harper of Wichita; and many family members in the Southwest Nebraska area.
Services were today, 10 a.m., at Lakeview Funeral Chapel in Wichita. Interment is in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

William Leonard Sturtevant
IMPERIAL -- William Leonard Sturtevant, 84, died Thursday (Sept. 25, 2003) at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.
He was born June 17, 1919, to Thomas L. and May (Miller) Sturtevant on the family farm north of Wauneta. He attended country school and graduated from Wauneta District No. 31 in 1937. He went to Agriculture College in Lincoln for two years. He then returned to the Wauneta area to farm.
On Jan. 26, 1941, he married Norma Blanche Loveland in Benkelman.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Encampment and the Rural Telephone Company.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Ruth, Alice and Savilla
Survivors include his wife, Norma of Wauneta; one daughter, Donna Taylor of Wauneta and companion, Robert Whiting; one sister, Dorothy Booth of Turlock, Calif.; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services were today at the United Methodist Church of Wauneta with Pastor Michael Laing officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery in Wauneta.
A memorial has been established for the Wauneta Public Library and the Wauneta United Methodist Church.
