William F. Oberhauser

William F. Oberhauser, 72, died Monday (Sept. 10, 2001) at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born on March 10, 1929, at Lindsay to Anthony and Elsie (Hemling) Oberhauser.

On May 22, 1951, he entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on April 30, 1953.

On Sept. 15, 1974, he married Bernyce Louise Johnson at Huron, S.D. They moved to McCook in 1999. He was a member of the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Omaha, the Omaha Veterans of Foreign Wars and Grand Island Eagles. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Gene and Andy Oberhauser.

Survivors include his wife, Bernyce of McCook; three step-daughters, Betty Rouse and husband, Phil of Trenton, Barbara Lundy of Omaha and Cathy Suit and husband, Jim of Bozeman, Mont.; two brothers, Jerry Oberhauser and wife, Lorene, of Lindsay, and Tony Oberhauser and wife, Joan of Bellevue; two sisters, Dorothy Schaefer and Betty and husband, Bud Steiner, all of Columbus; 10 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be Friday, 10:30 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Rev. Gary Brethour officiating. Rosary services will be Thursday, 6:00 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is today until 5:00 p.m., and Thursday 9:00 a.m. until the time of Rosary.

Memorials may be given American Heart Association.

Leo Robert Haag

SITKA, Alaska -- Leo R. Haag died Monday (Sept. 10, 2001) at his home in Sitka.

He was born Nov. 25, 1919, at Danbury to John J. and Nellie May (Thomas) Haag.

On Oct. 11, 1941, he married Frances M. Grant at the St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Indianola.

Leo and his brother, Virgil enlisted in the U.S. Navy 36th Construction Battalion, the Sea Bees, in 1942, and served together in the Pacific Islands for the duration of World War II. They built runways for American fighter planes, often enduring enemy sniper fire.

He owned and operated Haag Construction Company in Sitka and built many schools, churches, banks and community buildings there. He built the Nellie May Mall, named after his mother, and the Alaska Centennial Building.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Johnnie C. Haag; and one sister, Mary Logan.

Survivors include his wife, Frankie of Sitka; one daughter, Connie Milhouse and husband, Dennis of Anchorage, Alaska; four sons, Bob and wife, Sandy of Anchorage, Mike and wife, Debbie of Palmer, Alaska, Gary and wife, Patty of Sitka, and Tod and wife, Sherri of Dutch Harbor, Alaska; three brothers, Virgil of Kingston, Wash., Joe and wife, Helen of Farmington, N.M., and Cyrus and wife, Beverly of McCook; three sisters, Nellie Shay and husband, Bob of Edmonds, Wash., Ida Nicholson of Indianola, and Caroline Duron of Halstead, Kan.; one brother-in-law, Joe Logan of Augusta, Kan.; 25 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Sitka. Interment will be at the Sitka National Cemetery.

Jasper E. Cole

TRENTON -- Jasper E. Cole, 106, died Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2001) at the El Dorado Manor Home in Trenton.

He was born Oct. 5, 1894, at Blue Springs, Mo., to Joseph Charley and Elizabeth Jane (Pierce) Cole. The family moved to Oklahoma and later to Superior, before moving to the Culbertson and Trenton area where he grew up. He entered the U.S. Army, and served during World War I. He received his high school diploma at the Veterans Day Program from Lakeside Central High School in Trenton in November 1999.

On Sept. 13, 1919, he married Maude Blanche Nealeigh. They spent their married lives farming in the Cornell community south of Trenton. He retired in 1978.

He was a member of the Church of God at Cornell and Trenton. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Blanche on Feb. 29, 1976; one son, Elbert Cole; one daughter, Gladys Cemer; and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one son, Roy Cole and wife, Helena of Trenton; three daughters, Lily Faith of Lyman, Veda Lewis and husband, Carl of Trenton, and Louise Perez and husband, Dan of Northglen, Colo; one daughter-in-law, Virginia McCasland; two sisters, Josephine Cadle of Clio, Mich., and Mary Keller and husband, Carl of Trenton; 13 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at the Church of God in Trenton with the Rev. Richard Karr officiating. Interment will be at the Cornell Cemetery at Trenton.

Memorials may be given in his name, and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home in Trenton.

Kayte Bernice Nordhausen

BENKELMAN -- Kayte Bernice Nordhausen, 79, of Benkelman, died Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman.

She was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Rawlins County, Kansas to Earl Jesse and Anna Christine (Roesch) Denny. The family lived in Atwood for a short time before moving to Benkelman. She attended school in Benkelman and was a graduate of Benkelman High School.

On Feb. 3, 1944, she married Otto H. Nordhausen at North Bergen, N.J. They moved to Norfolk, Vir.., and later to Farragut, Idaho, while he finished his enlistment with the U.S. Navy. After the end of World War II, they returned to Benkelman where they raised their family and engaged in farming for several years before buying and operating several sale barns throughout the area.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, and a past member of the Benkelman Garden Club. She was active at the Dundy County Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto; her step-mother, Marie Hester Denny; one sister, Hazel Berry; one brother, F.L. "Pete" Denny; and one step-brother, Harry Greene.

Survivors include three daughters, Carol and husband, Glenn Clark of Broken Bow, Carla and husband, Patrick Mahar of Chappell, and Candice and husband, Dr. Michael Owens of McCook; one brother, Jesse "Ike" Denny of Benkelman; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m. MDT, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Benkelman with the Rev. George Matthews officiating. Interment will follow at the Benkelman Cemetery. She will lie in state today until 7 p.m. MDT at Forch Funeral Chapel of Benkelman.

Ruby Mae Post

TRENTON -- Ruby Mae Post, 101, formerly of Palisade, died Tuesday (September 11, 2001) at the El Dorado Manor in Trenton.

She was born Aug. 9, 1900, in Richardson County, to John Milton and Laura Jane (Pearson) Roller. She graduated from Burchard High School in 1917.

On May 1, 1922, she married Samuel Marion Post at McCook. She lived most of her life in Palisade where she was a homemaker and a clerk for the U.S. Post Office for many years. She had been living at El Dorado Manor in Trenton since 1995.

She was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Samuel in 1979; one son, Verle Post; one brother, Frank Roller; and one granddaughter, Peggy Post.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Post and wife, Ruth of Denver, Colo., and Jerry Post and wife, Dorothy of Amarillo, Texas; one daughter-in-law, Mary Post of Palisade; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, 2:00 p.m., at the Palisade United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Laing officiating. Interment will be at the Palisade Cemetery.

Visitation is today until 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Palisade United Methodist Church.

Mattie E. Jones

YORK -- Mattie E. Jones, 86, of York, died Thursday (Sept. 13, 2001) at the Hearthstone in York.

She was born June 3, 1915, near Upton, Wyo., to Bryan and Edith (Casada) Tupper. She was a graduate of Riverton High School and Kearney State College. She taught rural school in McPherson, Franklin, Kearney and Deuel Counties, and at schools in Columbus, Geneva, McCook and Lincoln.

On June 17, 1935, she married Lowell D. Jones of Magnet. Together they served Nebraska Methodist Churches at Ponca, Central City, Fairview, Neligh, Chappell, Columbus, McCook and Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell; and her brother Leo Tupper.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith Dye and husband, Leonard Paplauskas of Cheshire, Conn., and Miriam Peterson and husband, Charles of York; one son, Bryan Jones and wife Linda of McCook; two brothers, Clinton Tupper of Mesa, Ariz., and Milton Tupper of Red Cloud; two sisters, Ilene Wulf and Irene Hansen of Red Cloud; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday, 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Interment services will be at 3 p.m. at the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Lincoln.

Visitation will be Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at Metz Mortuary in York.

Memorials may be given in her name to any public library, The Hearthstone, or to the family.

Josephine 'Josie' (Cuellar) Clark

Josephine "Josie" (Cuellar) Clark, 83, died Thursday (September 13, 2001) at Community Hospital of McCook.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1917, in Oklahoma, to Macedonia and Tranquelina (Luevano) Cuellar. She graduated from McCook High School in 1937.

On March 23, 1980, she married Robert W. Clark at Dodge City, Kan. She lived most of her life in the McCook community.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Royal Neighbors, and the Business Professional Women. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and McCook Eagles. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Pete, Manueland Joseph Cuellar; and two sisters, Margaret Calvillo and Vetta Gilmore.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of McCook; one daughter, Margaret Anne and husband, James Dowd of McCook; two step daughters, Karen and husband, Fred Gammel of Meza, Ariz., and Korrine and husband, Don P. Rowland of McCook; four brothers, John Cuellar of Columbia, Mo., Frank Cuellar of Omaha, Albert Cuellar of McCook and Richard Cuellar and wife, Mary Ellis, of McCook; two sisters, Juanita Bittner of Chicago, Ill., and Delores and husband, Mark Dougherty of Scottsbluff; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Cuellar of McCook; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial services will be Monday, 10 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. William Ryland officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Rosary services will be Sunday, 7p.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook . Visitation is today until 5 p.m., and Sunday 2 p.m. until time of the rosary.

Memorials may be given in her name to the McCook Community Hospital Foundation.

Venice M. Owens Butler

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Venice M. Owens Butler, 80, formerly of Palisade, died Monday (Sept. 17, 2001) at a Topeka hospital. She was born Aug. 22, 1921, at Wamego, Kan., to Harry M. and Alta (Snapp) Claywell.

On July 4, 1943, she married Russell L. Owens at Topeka. She was a homemaker until his death on Oct. 24, 1968. She worked as a cook and later as a custodian at the Auburn-Washburn School District in Topeka. In July of 1972, she moved to Casper, Wyo.

On Aug. 27, 1972, she married Henry R.Butler at Casper. They resided in Casper until their retirement. They moved to Palisade in 1984, and resided there until moving to Topeka in 1998 when her health began failing.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Palisade. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Russell Owens.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Butler of Topeka; three daughters, Carol Ann Butler of Topeka, Patty Eikenberry of St. Joseph, Mo., and Lynda Trosclair of Warr Acres, Okla.; three step-sons, Ronald Butler of Topeka, Thomas Butler of Casper, and Jim Butler of Homer; one brother, Lyle Claywell of Topeka; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at the Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Interment will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.

She will lie in state at the funeral home Wednesday, noon to 9 p.m.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Meals on Wheels program, or the the American Diabetes Association, sent in care of Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 North Kansas, Topeka, KS 66608.
