Meta C. Jacquot
BROKEN BOW — Meta C. Jacquot, 88, of Broken Bow, formerly of rural Anselmo, died Jan. 27, 2001, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.

Mrs. Jacquot was born May 2, 1912, near Doniphan to Frederick and Christina Blaise Steinmeyer. She attended country school and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Grand Island. She then taught country school in Hall County near Grand Island for eight years.

She married Cecil Jacquot Oct. 26, 1937, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Giltner and they lived on various farms in the Merna area until settling on the Jacquot homestead. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Survivors include her husband of Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow; five daughters, Patsy Downey of Merna, Jeanne (Bill) Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, Marita (K.C.) Gottschalk and Mary Coffman, all of Broken Bow, and Kathryn (Michael) Sledge of Omaha; a son, Bill (Jan) Jacquot of Loveland, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Patti Jacquot of Anselmo; 29 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Mary Elaine; a son, Jerry; an infant brother, Edward; and a sister, Margaret.

A Christian wake will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Broken Bow. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Todd Philipsen officiating. Burial will be in the Dale Catholic Cemetery west of Merna.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Eugene G. Kitterer
WALLACE — Eugene G. Kitterer of Fremont, a graduate of Wallace High School, died Jan. 27, 2001, at the A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont. He was 84.

He was born Nov. 6, 1916, to Walter and Lydia Meyer Kitterer at Blue Springs. His family moved to Grainton when he was age 2 and he grew up in that area.

He served from 1941-1945 with the U.S. Army in Africa and Europe. He then lived at Kearney and moved to Fremont in 1961.
Mr. Kitterer worked for Blacktop Inc. and Missouri Valley Construction, which were acquired by Peter Kiewit Sons Inc. He was a plant supervisor in their road construction division. He retired in 1976. He had lived at the manor since an accident 18 months ago. He was a member of the Elks Club 984 and a 55-year member of the David Rhone Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

He married Elizabeth Knox and they later divorced.

Survivors include a son, Lonnie (Gloria) of Johnson Lake; a brother, Walter (Elaine) of Salt Lake City; two grandchildren, Di Kitterer of Tokyo and Li (Frank) Lynott of Kuwait; and a stepgrandson, Alexis Jimenez.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Ethel Kitterer and Christine and Elizabeth Harms.
Memorials may be given to the Wallace United Methodist Church or to the donor’s choice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. CST Wednesday at the church in Wallace with the Rev. Arnold Kramer officiating. The register book may be signed at the church in Wallace one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will be in Morning View Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 213.
Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont is in charge.

Loren Robert Von Behren
Loren Robert Von Behren, 71, of North Platte died Jan. 27, 2001, at Linden Court.

He was born Sept. 22, 1929, to Harry and Ida Schwartz Von Behren at Hershey. They moved to North Platte where he attended elementary school. He attended Our Redeemer Lutheran School and was confirmed in the church. He moved to Maxwell and attended high school and then moved to Kearney.

On April 15, 1950, he married Alta Mae Brumbaugh and they moved to North Platte where they made their home.

Mr. Von Behren and his brother, Harold, owned and operated a car and truck repair, and from 1960 to 1987 they owned and operated V.B. Bros. Feed and Grain.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he was head usher for many years and was president and an active member of Aid Association for Lutherans and sang in the choir. He enjoyed all sports, especially basketball.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Vicky (John) Smith of North Platte, Linda Krause (Bill Brown) of Denver and Carol (Wes) Reichenberg of Broken Bow; a son, Robert (Marianne) of St. Louis; three sisters, Marcele (Martin) Schmidt of Minden and Arletta (Ron) Hultquist and Beverly (Rolland) Sagesser, both of Elwood; two brothers, Marvin (Doris) Von Behren of Kent, Wash., and Earl Von Behren of Kissimmee, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Tonya Miller, Stacy McCarty, Brett Smith, David Krause, Jeremy, Kent and Laurie Reichenberg and Tessa and Brittany Von Behren; and a great-grandchild, Trevor Miller.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Cordelia McCalla, Evelyn Shank and Irene Baskin; and a brother, Harold Von Behren.

A memorial has been established to the church building fund or to the local Alzheimer’s Support Group.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Fred Simon officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home and prior to service time at the church on Wednesday.

Winnie Mae Ferguson
ANSELY — Winnie Mae Ferguson, 69, of Ansley died Jan. 26, 2001, at the Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
She was born July 22, 1931.

Mrs. Ferguson is survived by her husband, Ervie Lyle Ferguson Sr.; a daughter, Debra (David) Haumont of Broken Bow; a son, Ervie Jr. (Diana) of Ansley; three sisters, Helen Ratliff and Joan Bishop, both of Michigan, and Marchetta Deskins of Arizona; two brothers, John Hough of California and Franklin Hough of Arizona; a half brother, Curtis Farley Jr. of Michigan; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, a sister, four brothers, an infant son and a grandson.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ansley Christian Church with the Revs. Mel Shepherd and Jim Freguson officiating. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Dorothy Tatman Gordon
Dorothy Tatman Gordon, 91, of North Platte died Jan. 27, 2001, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

She was born Jan. 10, 1910, in Cozad to Charles and Bertha M. Gill Hart. She attended school in Cozad and graduated in 1928. She then attended Barnes Business School in Denver for two years.

On July 20, 1931, she married Harold J. Tatman Sr. The couple operated Dorothy’s Pie Shop in North Platte for a number of years before her husband’s death March 13, 1969.

On March 5, 1985, she married Clifford “Squire” Gordon. The couple lived in Norfolk and North Platte until his death April 10, 1988, when she moved to Centennial Park Retirement Village.

Mrs. Gordon is survived by a step-daughter, Lois Jeannette Gordon of Council Bluffs, Iowa; six sons, Harold J. (Ruth) Tatman Jr., Terry ( Marlene) Tatman, Jerry Tatman, Larry (Joyce) Tatman and Ronnie (Sue) Tatman, all of North Platte, and Fred (Carol) Tatman of Springdale, Ark.; two step-sons, Don Gordon of Griswold, Iowa, and Cart Gordon of Lincoln; a sister, Doris (Garney) Fraiser of Fort Collins, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Wayne Hart; and a great-granddaughter, Dawn Covington.

Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church of North Platte or the Nebraska Children’s Home Society.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Lew Champ officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

LaVera H. Jacobs
MAXWELL — LaVera Harriet Jacobs, 95, formerly of Maxwell died Jan. 27, 2001, at Sunset Haven Nursing Home at Curtis.

She was born Jan. 11, 1906, at Orafino to Milo and Ida Wilson Tridle. She moved to the Maxwell community as a child and attended school at Maxwell.

On Oct. 23, 1923, she married Charles E. Jacobs at Julesburg, Colo. She was a clerk in local grocery stores for many years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Maxwell, the War Mothers, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Rebekah Lodge.

Mrs. Jacobs is survived by a daughter, Vernice (Opal) Shaffer of Curtis; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Jacobs of Mobile, Ala.; a brother-in-law, Wayland Miller of North Platte; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Melvin; her parents; three sisters, Bertha Kelley, Esteline Holm and Anna Miller; two brothers, Chester and William Tridle; and two infant sisters.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church at Maxwell with the Rev. Bob Townsend officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens in North Platte.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

John G. “Jack” Buchfinck
MULLEN — John G “Jack” Buchfinck, 54, of Mullen died of an apparent heart attack on his ranch Jan. 24, 2001.

He was born May 10, 1946, in Hyannis to Lloyd and Glenna Hodges Buchfinck. He was a member of St. Joesph’s Episcopal Church. He graduated from Mullen High School in 1964, and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for three years where he began his career in broadcasting.

He married Mary Van Der Kamp while living in Green Bay, Wis., and they had a daughter, Kimberly Jane.

In 1977, he married Karen Nusbaum and they had two children, Shauna Marie and John Donald. They returned to the family ranch in 1978.

In August 1997, he married Jill Bader. He enjoyed car restoration and auto mechanics. Two of his most prized possessions were his factory-original GTOs. In the fall, he spent most of his Sundays watching National Football League, mainly the Green Bay Packers. From October 1989 to January 2000, he was a part-time sports anchor for KNOP-TV in North Platte. He knew many sports statistics and he always tried to inject some humor in his broadcast.

Mr. Buchfinck is survived by his wife, Jill; children, Kimberly (Kevin) Nielsen of Madison, Wis., Shauna Buchfinck of Mullen, John of Mullen and North Platte, and Becky and Carla Bader, both of Rapid City, S.D.; his parents; and a brother, Roy (Ann) Buchfinck of Virginia Beach, Va.

Memorials are suggested to the Mullen Ambulance Services.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Monday at the Lariat Auditorium in Mullen.

Mullen Funeral Home is in charge.

Robert V. ‘Bus’ Callihan
SUTHERLAND — Robert Vance “Bus” Callihan, 88, of Sutherland died Jan. 25, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Jan. 13, 1913, to George Edward and Mollie Hamilton Callihan north of Sutherland on the Glenburnie Fruit Farm, then run by the Hunter family. As a child his family moved south of Paxton. They later moved to Grand Island where he attended school and played with the Grand Island American Legion baseball team.

He returned to Sutherland in 1933 to work for his uncle. In 1934, he went to work for Jack White in the trucking business. He later purchased the business and was in the wholesale trucking business until 1978 when he retired.

On Sept. 17, 1935, he married Beulah B. Elfeldt at North Platte. They lived in Sutherland. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Sutherland United Methodist Church, the Sutherland American Legion Post 208 and the Sutherland Oregon Trail Golf Course.

Mr. Callihan is survived by his wife; a daughter, Connie (Rod) Norwood of Bloomfield, Conn.; a brother, George (Edith) Callihan of Grand Island; two grandsons, Dustin Kuhlman of Alexandria, Va., and Nickolas Kuhlman of Bloomfield; and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lillian Parkinson; and three brothers, Rosser, Bill and Edgar John Callihan.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, the North Platte Ostomy Club or the Sutherland United Methodist Church.
The body was cremated. Inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. at the Sutherland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karl Lent officiating.

Those wishing to sign the memorial book before Monday may do so from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.

Faye Gale
OMAHA — Faye Gale, 87, of Omaha, died Jan. 20, 2001, of heart failure at Immanuel Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 30, 1913. She was the great-granddaughter of Florence pioneers John Keysar Smith who settled north of Florence in the 1850s and Jacob Weber who founded the Florence Mill, which he purchased from Brigham Young in 1860.

A graduate of North High School and Omaha University, she married John C. Gale Jr. in 1936. She taught elementary school in Ogallala and Omaha in the 1950s and then kept books at the three Lane Drug Stores her parents owned in north Omaha.

She was a leader of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Omaha and was a housemother for a sorority at the University of Omaha. She was active in the Benson Women’s Republican Club and the parent-teacher association. She was a strong supporter of civil rights and had a deep belief in the worth and equality of all people.

Mrs. Gale is survived by a daughter, Patricia Gale of Omaha; two sons, John (Carol) and James (Jan), both of North Platte; five grandchildren, David (Christine), Elaine, Steven, Julia and Jennifer Gale; a great-grandson, Jack Gale; and a sister, Elizabeth Lyman of Omaha.
Private family services were Jan. 20, 2001, at Roeder Mortuary in Omaha.

Owen Briles Gardner
MARTIN, S.D. — Owen Briles Gardner, 2, great-grandson of Mabel Jones of Mullen, died Jan. 24, 2001, at Rapid City, S.D.

He was born Jan. 21, 1999, at Rapid City to Vernon and Shanna Kramer Gardner. During his short life, he lived in the Sandhills.

He is survived by his parents of Martin, S.D.; his grandparents, Dan and Vivian Gardner of Hartford, Kan., and Chancey and Alberta Kramer of Gordon; great-grandmother, Mabel Jones of Mullen; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.
Services will be at 1 p.m. MST Sunday at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Hyannis with the Rev. Chris Mottl officiating. Burial will be in the Whitman Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. MST today at the Mullen Funeral Home.

Warren Gibson
WALLACE — Warren Gibson, 80, of Wallace died Jan. 26, 2001, at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Dec. 29, 1920, at the Gibson farm south of Wallace to Harry and Sadie Ferrell Gibson. He grew up on the farm and attended rural school through the eighth grade. After his father died when he was young, he and his brother maintained the farm.

On June 14, 1941, he married Linnea Hawkinson in Torrington, Wyo. They lived on the Gibson farm until 1983, when they moved into town. He still took an active interest in the farm and had attended to the livestock earlier this week.

He was a member of the Nebraska and American Hereford Cattle Association, served on the Lincoln County Agricultural Soil Conservation Service committee for 40 years and was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant.

Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mary (Kenny) Marquardt of Wallace; a son, Larry (Karen) of Wallace; a brother, Earl (Ione) of North Platte; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. MST Monday at the Grant Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Pierce officiating. Burial will be in the Wallace Cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.
