Steven Gail Lorenzen
FREMONT - Steven Gail Lorenzen, 51, of Fremont, died May 29, 2001.

He was born in Fremont to Gail and Darlene Franke Lorenzen in July 7, 1949. He lived in several places over the last 20 years including Omaha, Denver, Phoenix, and North Platte. He had been living in Norfolk for the past year.

He had worked at AT&T, Mountain Bell and Northwestern Bell for about 20 years before working for eight years at Ross Perry Motors in North Platte. Most recently, he had worked for KOOI in Norfolk.

Mr. Lorenzen is survived by a daughter, Ashley L. Lorenzen of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Lorenzen Family Memorial fund c/o Omaha State Bank 12100 W. Center Road, Omaha, NE. 68144

Services will be at 11 a.m. June 11, 2001, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont.

Howard J. Childerston
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Howard J. Childerston, 93, brother of Harold Childerston of North Platte, died Aug. 4, 2001, at Southridge Healthcare Center.

He was born April 8, 1908, in a sod house in McPherson County near Tryon to James P. and Anna J. Childerston. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1926.

On Sept. 8, 1929, he married Myrtelle L. Marpel in Ringgold. He farmed in McPherson County until 1946, when he entered the Ministry of the American Sunday School Union. They moved to Chadron, where he served as a missionary until his retirement in 1974. He was ordained to gospel ministry by the Conservative Baptist Church of Chadron in 1956.

Mr. Childerston was instrumental in organizing and maintaining many Sunday schools, daily vacation Bible schools and the Victory Heights Bible Camp south of Chadron.

He served as a member of the advisory council of Grace University in Omaha from 1965 to 1986 and was a member of the Nebraska State Board of Child Evangelism Fellowship from 1975 to 1986. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1990. He was an active member of the Central Baptist Church in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Leora (Wallace) Goff of Crawford; three sons, Ward (Vonnie) of Hagerston, Md., Dale (Barbara) of Denver and Charles (Carol) of Sioux Falls; a brother, Harold Childerston of North Platte; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and many friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, two sisters and a brother.

Services were Aug. 9, 2001, at the Central Baptist Church with burial in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Dixie Jean Hiner
STURGIS, S.D. — Dixie Jean Hiner, 74, of Sturgis, S.D., sister of Betty Lange of North Platte, died Aug. 6, 2001, at the Rapid City, S.D., Regional Hospital.

She was born March 1, 1927, in Ashby to Leonard H. and Nellie Mae Johnston Babb. She grew up on the family ranch and attended rural country school, graduating from Tryon High School.

She married Francis Bernard "Jack" Winder at Stapleton. They lived on a ranch near Ringgold until they bought a ranch near Arthur. She later married Charles Hiner at Walzenburg, Colo. They moved to Alda in 1967, and later moved to the ranch in Arthur. In 1972, they bought the Longbranch Bar in Arthur, which they operated until 1977, when they built a home near Lake McConaughy. In 1980, they bought a motor home and visited their children and spent the winters in the south.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Pete) Dyer of Casper, Wyo.; a son, Walt (Rose) Winder of Sturgis; two sisters, Amy Pyzer of Oregon and Betty Lange of North Platte; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, two daughters, a son, her parents, a sister and a brother.

Memorials are suggested to the Calvary Baptist Church in Sturgis.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Calvary Baptist Church in Sturgis with the Rev. Bob Yantis officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. CDT Monday in the Miller Cemetery near Tryon with the Rev. Bob Yantis officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and one hour prior to the service today at the church.

Twila L. Smith
Twila Lee Smith, 65, of North Platte died Aug. 11, 2001, at her home west of North Platte.

She was born Aug. 13, 1935, at North Platte to George Leroy and Eloise "Lois" Edna Roueche Wilson. They lived in Hershey until she was in the sixth grade and then they moved to the Platte Valley Community west of North Platte. She attended Platte Valley Grade School and graduated from North Platte High School in 1953. She then worked as a bookkeeper at the First National Bank of North Platte.

On Feb. 14, 1954, she married George "Bill" Smith in North Platte and they made their home in the Platte Valley Community.
She was a 4-H leader and a longtime member of the Platte Valley Women's Club, as well as the morning coffee group. She liked doing craft projects, sewing, bowling and playing the piano and the organ.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband; three sons, Terry (Lynda) and Monte, all of North Platte, and Michael of Tucson, Ariz.; her mother; a sister, Barbara Campbell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Brooks, Patrick, Jacey, Kelby, Krystal and Kent Smith, all of North Platte; a very special cousin, Kenny Wilson of Manassas, Va.; a brother-in-law, Bob Laubner of Denver; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Necile Arlene Laubner; and three brothers-in-law, Chuck Campbell and Leroy and Dayton Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Callahan Cancer Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Steven Bell officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Odean Colonial Chapel, and before the service Wednesday at the church.

David Troy Squier
ANSELMO — David Troy Squier, 16, of Anselmo, died Aug. 10, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney as the result of a motor-vehicle accident.

He was born March 6, 1985, in Broken Bow to Ray and Connie Myers Squier. He lived with his family in the Anselmo community and attended Anselmo-Merna High School. He was a member of this year's sophomore class.

He was an active member of the Sonlife and ASALT youth groups at the Berean Church in Broken Bow.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Kenna Squier of Anselmo; a brother, Marcus of Anselmo; and grandparents Bob and Bonnie Myers of Callaway and Dorothy Squier of Broken Bow.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Reuben Squier.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Berean Fundamental Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Bryan Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Gates Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Wilma Van Cleave
ARNOLD — Wilma Frances Bassett Van Cleave of Arnold died Aug. 9, 2001. She was 90.

She was born Oct. 21, 1910, in the Pleasant Hill area between Arnold and Merna to William C. and Flora Thanel Bassett. She attended school at Arnold and graduated in 1928.

On May 25, 1948, she married Howard Van Cleave in North Platte. They made their home in the Pleasant Hill and Cliff Table communities until 1952, when they purchased a ranch in the Mildale area. They lived on the Lost Cabin Ranch for 37 years. They moved to Arnold in 1989.

She enjoyed the river, nature, cattle, calves, turkeys, crocheting, playing cards, traveling and church activities. She was a member of the Altar Society for 65 years.

Mrs. Van Cleave is survived by her husband; a sister, Mable Hahn of Omaha; a sister-in-law, Alice Van Cleave of Callaway; seven nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margaret; a brother, Walter; three sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Agnes Catholic Church.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arnold. Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the Arnold Funeral Home.

Greg W. 'Tank' Sorheim

EUSTIS - Greg W. "Tank" Sorheim, 40, died Oct. 26, 2001, in Eustis.

He was born May 22, 1961, at Mitchell, S.D., to Glen and Doris Johnston Sorheim. He attended schools at Fedora, S.D., and Howard, S.D., and later attended a vocational technical college. He did carpentry work in furniture refinishing. He later worked at a packing plant in Huron. In 1990, he moved to Grand Island and in 1992, to Lexington where he worked at IBP. He had lived in Eustis for nine years.

On Jan. 4, 1997, he married Andrea "Andy" Gove.

Mr. Sorheim was a member of the United Methodist Church and was active in the choir. He was also a member of the Eustis Volunteer Fire Department and the Handymans Club of America. He worked at T.O. Hass Tire Service in Lexington and his interests included NASCAR racing and the Minnesota Vikings football team.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jordan Sorheim of Eustis; a stepdaughter, Ashley Gove of Eustis; two stepsons, Christopher and Benjamin Gove, both of Eustis; his mother, Doris Sorheim of Howard; a sister, Gwen (Terry) Parks of Minnesota; and a brother, Gary of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial has been established.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Eustis with the Rev. Fred Andersen officiating.

Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad is in charge.

Loren McAlevy
BROKEN BOW — Loren McAlevy, 55, died Jan. 10, 2001, at his home in Broken Bow.
He was born Feb. 11, 1945, at Mason City to Leslie Alexander and Hazel Alvina Henderickson McAlevy. He lived most of his life in Custer County.
On Feb. 18, 1965, he married Neola Craig at Grand Island. He worked in the farming and trucking industry for many years until he retired in 1980 due to ill health.
Mr. McAlevy is survived by his wife; four daughters, Cindy (Frank) Fritz and Cathy (Sam) Lupo, both of Randolph, Iowa, Joleen (James) Dunham and Laura (Chris) Rudichar, both of Aurora; four sisters, Beth (Bryan) Fisher of Wood River, Janice (Herb) Switzer of Anselmo, Barbara Mason of Kearney and Judi (Bob) Coons of Loveland, Colo.; a brother, David (Cloetta) McAlevy of Holstein; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sisters; six brothers, Dennis, Gerald, Roger, Glenn, Russell and Dale; a sister-in-law, Ida; a brother-in-law, Gary; and two nephews, Lonnie and Roland.
A memorial has been established.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel with Fred Cram officiating. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Violet Ada Fisher Messersmith
MULLEN — Violet Ada Fisher Messersmith, 78, of Mullen died Jan. 8, 2001, at BryanLGH Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
She was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Frontier County to Leonard Steel and Elva Eliza Bussard Fisher. Her mother died when she was young and she was raised by her grandmother in Maywood. She graduated from Maywood High School. In later years she attended McCook Junior College and earned a degree in food and nutrition.
On Feb. 26, 1942, she married Lyle Jake Messersmith in Elwood. She enjoyed making crafts, gardening and cooking for her family. She lived in the Curtis and Maywood area until 1994 when she moved to Mullen to be near her family.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the Senior Citizens Center in Mullen, the United Methodist Church in Curtis and was active in the Assembly of God Church in Mullen.
Mrs. Messersmith is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Gary) Hoyt of Whitman; three sons, Milton Joe (Donna) of Ketchikan, Ala., Thomas (Nancy) of Sterling, Colo., Patrick (Dee) of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Aumell Fisher of Reno, Nev.; seven half brothers; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Vivian; her parents; and six brothers.
Memorials are suggested to the Assembly of God Church in Mullen or the Senior Citizens Center in Mullen.
Services will be at 10 a.m. MST today at the Assembly of God Church in Mullen with the Rev. Darrell Schmid officiating. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. CST in the Farnam Cemetery.
Mullen Funeral Home is in charge.

Helen Knaub Rutz
OGALLALA — Helen Knaub Rutz, 85, died Jan. 10, 2001, in Lincoln.
She was born Jan. 31, 1915, at Culbertson to Alex and Pauline Kehler Eurich. She attended school in Scottsbluff.
On Jan. 10, 1932, she married Jacob Knaub in Scottsbluff. They farmed until 1959, when they moved to Ogallala where they operated a motel until her husband’s death in 1979.
On Dec. 21, 1985, she married Herman “Herb” Rutz of Lincoln. She was a member of the Indian Hill Community Church in Lincoln.
Mrs. Rutz is survived by her husband Herb Rutz of Lincoln; a daughter, Donna (Merwin) Anderson of Newington, Conn.; three sons, Gary (Marilynn) Knaub of Ogallala, Charles “Chuck” Knaub of Sutherland, and Tom (Laurel) Knaub of Aurora, Colo.; three stepsons, Dr. Tim (Nancy) Rutz of San Antonio, Tom (Linda) Rutz of Lincoln, and Herb (Kathi) Rutz of Avon Lake, Ohio; two daughters-in-law, Sue and Ruth Knuab, both of Ogallala; two sisters, Katherine Lehman and Eileen Uhrich, both of Gering; three brothers, Robert Eurich of Scottsbluff, Melvin Eurich of LaFayette, Colo., and Donald Eurich of Lewisville, Texas; 15 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three sons, Kenneth, Don and Dean Knaub; a daughter-in-law, Leona Knaub; a granddaughter; two grandsons; three sisters; and three brothers.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or in care of the family.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Ogallala with the Revs. Phil Ewert and Eddie Masters officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home.

Harold H. ‘Dubbie’ Dubbs

Harold H. Dubbs, 92, of North Platte died Nov. 30, 2001, at Linden Court in North Platte.
He was born April 1, 1909, to Dan and Lela Blue Dubbs near Shelton.

On Feb. 2, 1935, he married Ellen Blomenkamp at Keystone and they moved to North Platte in 1936, where their daughter, Wanda, was born. He had lived in North Platte since.

Mr. Dubbs was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was head custodian of the Lincoln County Courthouse for many years before retiring. He was a longtime member of the Prairie Lake Boat Club at Lake Maloney and enjoyed fishing, hunting, yard work, flower gardening and woodworking. One of his main passions was the outside Christmas decorations he put up on his home every year.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Shelly (Randy) Christy of Chanhassen, Minn.; a grandson, Terry (Joann) Drost of Joplin, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Sarah Drost and Rebecca and Jacob Christy; a son-in-law, Ken (Nelda) Drost of Omaha; a sister, Eileen Wilson of Arvada, Colo.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and close friends, Bill and Friede Hunt.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1978; a daughter, Wanda Drost; a great-grandson, Danny Drost; his parents; and a brother, Gerald.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Prairie Lake Boat Club, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or to the donor’s choice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 8:30 am. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.
