Donald D. Peden

COZAD — Donald Dean Peden, 64, died Feb. 2, 2002, at Cozad.
He was born Jan. 8, 1938, at Cozad to Virgil and Sophie Weiland Peden. He attended school at Cozad and later married Kay Moore of Brady. They made their home in rural Cozad. The couple had two children, Mary and Kelly.

Following a divorce, Mr. Peden was married to Joanne Malcom. They made their home near Oconto and north of Cozad before moving to Cozad in 1990. During his lifetime he worked at the hay mills and was employed at Monroe Auto Equipment
Company for 21 years until his retirement in 1988. Through the years he also enjoyed raising hogs.

Mr. Peden was a member of the Berean Fundamental Church and for several years did babysitting for mother’s of pre-school children at the church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary Sabin of Gothenburg and Heather Epp of Cozad; three sons, Kelly (Kim) of Gothenburg, John of Cozad and Dustin (Lisa) of Mitchell; eight grandchildren, Brandi and Tandi Sabin, Kyle, Nick, Reese, Zachary, Savannah and Emily Peden.; and four sisters, Doris Vogt, Phyllis (Pete) Huber, Janice (Neal) Gibbins, all of Cozad, and Sandy (Gary) Schnacker of Elwood.

He was preceded in death by two infant grandsons, Casey and Corbey; his parents; a sister, Wanda Carbaugh; and a brother, Gerald.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Berean Fundamental Church with the Revs. Roger Dawn and Paul Harkness officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery.
Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge.

Charles F. Pope

JOHNSON LAKE — Charles F. Pope, 78, of Johnson Lake died Feb. 3, 2002, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
He was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Montpelier, Idaho, to William and Gertrude Fanner Pope. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 42½years and also retired from the U.S. Army after 26½years with the rank of Warrant Officer 1. He served overseas in Europe in World War II and in the Korean conflict. He retired from the Nebraska National Guard in Kearney in January 1984.

On Oct. 17, 1963, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Kitterer. They had made their home on Johnson Lake since 1965. He enjoyed fishing and more than 18 years of traveling with his travel trailer to see the sights and visit friends and relatives.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Jeannette (John) Palmer and Debra (Rob) Hardman, all of Green River, Wyo.; a son, Charles Gary (Karen) of Green River; a stepson, Lonnie (Gloria) Kitterer of Johnson Lake; 12 grandchildren, Jason Palmer of Green River, Greg Palmer of Grand Junction, Colo., Holly Pope of Salt Lake City, Ryan and Melissa Orton, K.C., Levi, Sadie and Mason Pope of Green River, Di Kitterer of Tokyo, Japan, and Li Kitterer and Alexis Jimenez of Kearney; six great-grandchildren; sisters, June McNeil of Green Valley, Ariz., and Ardyth Gerst of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brothers, Richard (Muriel) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bud (Violet) of Urie, Wyo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church in Lexington, Johnson Lake EMS or the donor’s choice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Lexington with the Rev. K.C. BeDunnah officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell with military honors by the North Platte Honor Guard.

Terry J. Thomas

OGALLALA — Terry Jay Thomas, 52, of Ogallala died Feb. 4, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 28, 1949, to James and Wyona Plummer Thomas. He graduated from Ogallala High School in 1967. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December of 1967, and was discharged in 1970.

On Jan. 28, 1972, he married Micky Walkenhorst. In 1974, he began working at Union 76 Truck Stop. In 1989, he and his wife purchased Ponderosa Lounge in Ogallala.

Mr. Thomas was a member of St. Lukes Catholic Church. He was a member of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, the Ogallala Elks Lodge 1760 and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Melissa Thomas and Christina Thomas; his parents, Jim and Wyona Thomas, all of Ogallala; a sister, Jerri (Daniel) Chrisp of North Platte; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and special friends, Leanne Kerchal of Ogallala and Charlene Ecker of Paxton.

He was preceded in death by a special great-grandmother, Gertrude Plummer; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and an aunt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Squad.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Draucker Funeral Home of Ogallala.

Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Lukes Catholic Church in Ogallala with the Rev. John Schlaf officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to the time of rosary Wednesday at Draucker Funeral Home.

Lula M. Zierlein

Lula Marie Zierlein, 77, of North Platte died Feb. 3, 2002, at North Platte Care Center.

She was born June 26, 1924, to Floyd and Viola Long Hopkins at Burwell. She moved with her family to Custer County when she was 8 years old and lived there until moving to Lake McConaughy in 1975. She attended school graduating from Arnold High School in 1941, then attended Grand Island Business College, graduating in 1942.

On Aug. 10, 1942, she married Everett Zierlein. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. She later owned and operated the Goldenrod Real Estate Agency at Lake McConaughy.

Mrs. Zierlein was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lewellen, the Nebraska Realtors Association, Lake McConaughy Committee, Ogallala Chamber of Commerce, Highway 26 Committee and many more committees in Ogallala and Lewellen.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Wayne) Anderson of Brunswick, Maine, and Barbara (Dahl) Jungren of Broken Bow; two sons, Stanley (Sharon) of Pinedale, Wyo., and Richard of Almogordo, N.M.; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; her mother, Viola Konings of Broken Bow; a sister, ViEva Foran of Arnold; a brother, Phillip Konings of Casper, Wyo.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts.

She was preceded in death by her father and her stepfather, John Konings.

The body was cremated.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. MST Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Lewellen.

There will be no visitation. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge.

John T. “Jack” Williamson

John Thomas “Jack” Williamson, 75, of North Platte died April 2, 2002, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Jan. 3, 1927, to George and Hazel Schefneker Williamson at Detroit, Mich. He was raised in Detroit, where he attended St. DeLaselle High School. After graduation from high school he served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He later returned to Detroit and attended Detroit University.

He married Laird Beemer. He was employed as a stockbroker and at the J. L. Hudson Company in Detroit. He came to North Platte in 1986, and had lived here since.

Survivors include two sons, Scott Williamson of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jay (Kimberly) Williamson of Surprise, Ariz.; and a sister, Patricia Birge of North Platte.

His parents and a sister, Mary Jane Currier, preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established to Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in North Platte with the Rev. Art Faesser officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery south of Maxwell.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home of North Platte.

Kaydon Lee Gutherless

Kaydon Lee Gutherless, infant son of Sara Ann Gutherless and Scott David Levy, was born and died April 2, 2002, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Candice Levy of Walnut, Calif., Kent and Karen Gutherless of North Platte and Daryl and Linda Ballheim of Lexington; and great-grandparents, Ivan and Mary Gutherless of Maxwell.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Chapel. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Adams & Swanson Funeral Home of North Platte is in charge.

Trudy A. Gillming

Trudy Ann Gillming, 56, of North Platte died June 6, 2002, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

She was born July 13, 1945, to Jack G. and Leta V. Brown Stengel in Kearney, where she grew up and attended school.
On May 16, 1962, she married Richard L. Gillming in Grand Island. The couple lived in Kearney until 1971, when they moved to North Platte. She had worked at Liberty Cleaners, Tallmon Jewelers, GPRMC and Lots To Love.

Mrs. Gillming belonged to the Harvest Christian Fellowship, was a founder of Bosom Buddies Cancer Support Group, was a coordinator of Look Good, Feel Better Encouragement Group and was a member of Central Nebraska Bird Cage Club. She enjoyed shopping, decorating, making cards, floral arrangements and playing bridge.

Surviving her is her husband of North Platte; a daughter, Brenda (Michael) Veith of North Platte; a son, Mark (Amy) of Goodland, Kan.; her mother of Kearney; three sisters, Lynn (Jim) Kelly of Des Moines, Iowa; Nancy (Bob) Henry of Phoenix and Joann (Mike) Tumbleson of Lincoln; a brother, Joe (Megan) Stengel of Kearney; four grandchildren, Joshua (Amberly), Julie, and Janell Veith, all of North Platte, and Dillon Gillming of Goodland; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Her father preceded her in death April 27, 1979.
A memorial has been established to the Gillming family to be donated to local cancer charities.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Harvest Christian Fellowship in North Platte, with the Rev. Ron Lauber officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Kenneth H. Reeves

Kenneth Harold Reeves, formerly of North Platte, died June 2, 2002, at his home in Tucson, Ariz. He was 47.

He was born July 7, 1954, in North Platte.

Mr. Reeves worked for Union Pacific Railroad, the North Platte Police Department and as a physical therapy assistant. His true passion was reading the Bible and sharing it with others. He was an excellent storyteller and had written several books. He was founder of Casa Gloriosa, which serves HIV-infected/affected children.

He was an incredible person who enjoyed life and impacted all who knew him. He had a great sense of humor and charismatic personality. He was one-of-a-kind and loved deeply by his friends and family.

He moved to Tucson in 1990 with his wife Johna, who survives him. Other survivors are his children Nina, Holli, Lana, Bree, Cynthia and CJ; parents Barb and Max Beyersdorf of Tucson and Harold and Lois Reeves of Brady; and a sister, Judy (Roger) Kinsinger and her daughters, Karli and Karie.

A sister, Karla, and his grandparents preceded him in death.

Memorials may be given to Casa Gloriosa, 3938 E. Grant Road, No. 216, Tucson, AZ 85712, and Christ Community Church, 7801 E. Kenyon Drive, Tucson, AZ 85710.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Westfield Foursquare Church in North Platte.

Carpenter Memorial Chapel of North Platte is in charge.

Evelyn Mae Schipporeit

CALLAWAY — Evelyn Mae Schipporeit, 93, died June 6, 2002, at her home in Callaway.

She was born Dec. 2, 1908, to Henry and Ida Pickering Pickering at Lexington, where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1928.

On Oct. 2, 1929, she married William Schipporeit at Brewster. They made their home in Brewster for six years and in 1933, they moved to Callaway.

She spent more than 25 years working in the Callaway school cafeteria and also cleaned the United Methodist Church in Callaway for 20 years.

Mrs. Schipporeit was a member of the United Methodist Church in Callaway for more than 50 years, a member of the Methodist Women’s Circle and the Garden Club. She enjoyed going to the Senior Citizen Center for their potluck dinners and she enjoyed gardening when she was able. Her great-grandchildren knew her as “GG.” She enjoyed babysitting for her grandchildren. They remember staying with grandma and having the “best cinnamon rolls ever made.” Her cinnamon rolls were so good that people around town would call and order them for special occasions. She will be remembered as the lady with a “heart of gold” and be missed by family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Leigh and Donna (Wayne) Hogg, all of Callaway; two sisters, Jessie Ferguson and Ethel Miller, both of Brewster; eight grandchildren, Debra Leigh of Omaha, Shari Sheppard, Tami Smith, Tim Hogg and Roxi Meyer, all of Callaway, D.D. Perry of Denver, Micki Blackburn of Broken Bow and Robert Leigh of Grand Island; 11 great-grandchildren, Lance, Brandon and Leigh Anne Smith, Jessica and Marcus Blackburn, Zach and Hannah Meyer, Brian Hogg, Logan and Abby Leigh and Spencer Perry; a great-great-grandson, Gabe Coon; three step-great-grandchildren, Michelle Smith, Blake Sheppherd and Lynette Willis; and seven step-great-great-grandchildren, Alea and Evan Smith, Carly, Brett and Regan Sheppard and Hunter and Laney Willis.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1961; a daughter, Clareen in 1949; her parents; three brothers, Burl Wayne, Ollie and Dale; and a son-in-law, Donald Leigh.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, the Callaway District Hospital or the donor’s choice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Callaway with the Rev. Gerald Schwarz officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Tim-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway.
