Jacob Ray Dameron
CURTIS — Jacob Ray Dameron, 84, died at Premier Estates in North Platte Oct. 1, 2002.
He was born May 29, 1918, at North Platte to Daniel Franklin and Martha Ellen Hankins Dameron. He served in the Navy during World War II. After leaving the service, he farmed and ranched near Moorefield.
On June 24, 1948, he married Alice Elizabeth Peter at North Platte. She preceded him in death on May 28, 1984.
Mr. Dameron began working for Union Pacific Railroad in 1956 and worked various jobs for the railroad for 17 years.
He retired to a ranch south of Moorefield, where he lived until his death. He enjoyed playing the fiddle, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, banjo and piano. He was a member of the Old Time Fiddlers of the Moorefield, Maxwell and Brady areas.
Surviving him are two daughters, Bonnie (Donnie) Woodring of Moorefield and Barbara (Rodney) Reynolds of Maxwell; a son, Marvin (Cynthia) of Moorefield; a sister, Edna Erwin of Ogden, Utah; a step-brother, Neil Cross of Orange, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Daniel (Janelle) and Micheal Dameron, all of North Platte, Jeremy (Jessica) Woodring of Kearney, Stacey Woodring of Lincoln, Lisa Woodring of Funk, Amy Woodring of Stockville, and Misty and Molly Reynolds, both of Maxwell; 15 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, Charles (Michelle) Parmer Jr. of Grand Island, Wesley (Jennifer) and Harry (Kimbra) Parmer, all of Hastings, and Laurie (Danny) Steagall of Greeley, Colo.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Millie; and two brothers, Clarence and Roy.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Curtis, with the Rev. Allen Hodges officiating.
Burial with military honors is in the Moorefield Cemetery.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Blase-Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.
A.T. ‘Tolle’ Tollefson
GOTHENBURG — A.T. “Tolle” Tollefson, 90, of Gothenburg died Oct. 2, 2002, at his home.
He was born April 21, 1912, to Olaf and Ida Thompson Tollefson at Viroqua, Wis. He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1931. He graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
In 1935, he taught school in Hills, Minn., where he met his future wife, Elaine. They were married Aug. 6, 1937, at Luverne, Minn. He then taught school in Bloomfield, and later was employed by DuPont, and worked on the Manhattan Project at many different places throughout the country.
The couple came to Gothenburg in 1945, where he owned and operated Kampfe & Tollefson Department Store. He retired in 1974. He was a member of the Lions Club in Gothenburg and the school board for many years. He was also a member of the American Lutheran Church.
Surviving him is his wife; a daughter, Mary (Douglas) Vap of McCook; a niece, Karen Tollefson of Lancaster, Wis.; two grandchildren, Nicole Vap (Drew Sidener) of Denver and Aaron (Alicia) Vap of Minneapolis; and a great-granddaughter, Zelda Sidener.
He was preceded in death by three daughters, Thea, Lylis and Margaret; his parents; a sister, Esther; and a brother, Obed.
Memorials may be made to the American Lutheran Church, Central Plains Hospice or to the donor’s choice.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg, with the Rev. Steve Berke officiating. Burial is in the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.
Faith E. Batie
COZAD - Faith E. Batie, 64, of Cozad died Dec. 6, 2002, at the Cozad Hospital.
She was born Aug. 19, 1938, at Superior to Frank and Dessie Rakestraw Batie. She attended Cozad schools, graduating 1956. During her lifetime she had been employed at Ollie's Café and Nebraska Plastics. She was a sports fan, especially Nebraska football and enjoyed playing bingo.
She was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member of the Pricilla Rebekah Lodge 127 and the Nebraska Grand Lodge. She held offices in both memberships.
Survivors include her two sisters, Sharon Batie and Patsy Roenfeldt, both of Cozad; three nephews, Scott (Ann Marie) Roenfeldt of Denver, Todd Roenfeldt of Montrose, Colo., and Nick Roenfeldt of Imperial; a niece, Wendy Loving of Denver; and a niece-in-law, Angie Roenfeldt of Montrose.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an uncle, Burdette Batie.
A memorial has been established.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ethal Fox officiating. Burial will be at the Cozad Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad, which is in charge.
Helen A. Cole
LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Helen A. Cole, 75, formerly of North Platte, died Dec. 3, 2002, in Denver, Colo.
She was born April 7, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
On September 1, 1945, she married Neal Cole in Hartford, Conn. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed stamp collecting, crossword puzzles and quilting.
Survivors include her husband of Lakewood, Colo.; two daughters, June Richarson of Billings, Mont., and Barb Weese of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; three sons, Jim of Watauga, Texas, Bud of Thornton, Colo., and Tom of Irving, Texas; two sisters, Pearl Cole and Gladys Cole, both of North Platte; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the Horan & McConaty Family Chapel in Lakewood, Colo. Burial will be in the Fort Logan National Cemtery.

Lonnie V Gibbons
Lonnie V Gibbons, 67, long time North Platte resident and retired fireman, died Dec. 7, 2002, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 30, 1935, at Seward to Vern and Mabel Cain Gibbons. He attended school at North Platte and later served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
On Dec. 15, 1957, he returned to North Platte and married Kaye Keithley.
Mr. Gibbons was a salesman for Al Eighmy Dodge for a number of years and then was employed by the North Platte Fire Department retiring in 1984. He was a member of the American Legion and a 22-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Survivors include his wife, of North Platte; a daughter, Tammy (Scott) Straughan of Deltona, Fla.; a son, Tom of Scottsbluff; his mother, Mabel Thieman of North Platte; four grandchildren, Zachary (Tonya), Nicole, and Kaylee Gibbons, and Justin Straughan; a stepbrother, Jerry Gibbons of Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and stepfather Edmund J. Thieman.
Memorials are suggested to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Nathan R. Wadewitz of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Carpenter Memorial Chapel is in charge.
Lt. Col. Dillon L. McFarland
UTAH - Dillon L. McFarland, 40, of Utah died Nov. 13, 2002, while on a Combat Training Mission, when the F-16C Fighting Falcon he was flying went down at the Utah Test and Training Range.
He was born March 8, 1962. He graduated from Douglas High School in S.D. in 1980. He also graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1984. In his civilian job he worked for American Air Lines. He had 3043 hours in the F-16 and with more than 85 Combat flying hours.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy Shaw McFarland, graduate of Gothenburg High School, daughter of Joleen Shaw of North Platte; a son, Joshua; a daughter, Ashley; his mother, Katy Godbout; his sisters, Marie "Butch" Modew and Jacque Godbout; and a brother, Chris McFarland.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Bob Godbout.
Memorials are suggested to the All Wells Fargo institution.
Memorial service was Nov. 17, 2002. A Missing Man Formation of F-16's flew during the memorial service. Services were at Hill Air Force Base Chapel on Nov. 20, 2002. Burial was in Lundquest Memorial Park.
Connie Lee Childress
OVERTON — Connie Lee Childress, 53, of Overton died Feb. 2, 2003, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.
She was born Sept. 14, 1949, in Pilgner to Orville and Ida (Bilstein) Akin. She attended Broken Bow High School and graduated in 1967.
In 1967, she married Leland Fair in Broken Bow. On Sept. 1, 1968, their daughter, Tina was born.
Later she worked in Kearney at Baldwin Manufacturing and married Carl Elfgren on June 25, 1977, in Lexington. They had two sons, William on Oct. 19, 1978, and Travis on Nov. 1, 1980. The lived in Overton from then on raising Tina, Bill, and Travis.
She remarried in 1999 and later divorced in 2000, she resided north of Overton.
Survivors include a daughter, Tina (Dale) Poe of Hill City, Kan.; two sons, William (Ranada) Elfgren of Overton and Travis Elfgren who is presently in the U. S. Marine Corps based in Camp Pendelten, Calif.; her mother, Ida Akin of Scottsbluff; a sister, Betty Akin of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Sara, Brandi, Michael, Leigh-Anne, and Alex; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their children.
She was preceded in death by her father; infant sister, Patty; brother, Ed; and older sister, Wilma.
A memorial has been established.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Dean Pofahl officiating. Burial will be in the Overton Cemetery in Overton.
There will be visitation. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge.
Daniel P. Ortiz
SUTHERLAND — Daniel Perez Ortiz, 81, of Sutherland died Feb. 4, 2003, at his home.
He was born March 29, 1921, in Wichita Falls, Texas to Juan and Soledad Perez Ortiz. He grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas. At the age of 17, he came to Nebraska.
On Sept. 19, 1942, he married Jennie Barron in Sutherland. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 23, 1942, and served for 22 years. He served in World War II with the 104th “Timberwolves” Infantry Division in the European, African, and Far East Theatres, having several specialties, including being a paratrooper. He participated in the Normandy Invasion and was missing in action for two months, eventually ending up in a French hospital. He received the Bronze Star Medal for his services during World War II. He also served in the Korean Conflict before retiring from the service. After his retirement, he came back to Sutherland to rejoin his family. He worked at TRW in Ogallala for 5 years before working for Nebraska Public Power District for 15 years, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Ortiz was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in Sutherland.
Survivors include his wife of Sutherland; a daughter, Connie (Dennis) Faith of Danville, Ill.; two sons, Danny (Jackie) of Stroudburg, Pa., and John (Patty) of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico; two sisters, Jennie Canales of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Elizabeth Moreno of Plano, Texas; five grandchildren, Jenny, Sarah, Eddie, Maggie, Flor Del Rocio; and two great-grandchildren, Danielle and Andre.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Jack, Manuel, Paul, Steve, and Elias.
A memorial has been established to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Christian Wake Services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. James Janovek as celebrant. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors by the Sutherland Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday and from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Howard Fairchild
Howard Fairchild, 83, died April 10, 2003, at his North Platte home.
He was born May 22, 1919, in Concordia, Kan., to David and Esther Hanson Fairchild. In 1937, he graduated from Beloit high school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945.
In 1941, he married Marion Duley in Beloit. They lived in various towns in Kansas and Missouri while he worked for J.C. Penney. In 1963, they moved to North Platte, where they ran the Fairchild Hearing Aid Center.
Mr. Fairchild was a member of Rotary International, past board of directors for the Sterling College in Sterling, Kan., State of Nebraska Hearing Aid Association and Deacon of the Presbyterian Church in Sterling, and Nevada, Mo.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn (Bill) Durham of Gladstone, Mo.; a son, Colin Fairchild of Lincoln; a brother, Myrle (Darlene) Fairchild of Omaha; three grandchildren, Paul (Rhea) Fairchild, Lance Fairchild, and Bree Anne Fairchild; two great-grandchildren, Krystian and Madison Fairchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife; and a brother, Vernon.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today and Sunday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.
Dorothy Cecil Sexton
MULLEN - Dorothy Cecil Sexton, 92, lifetime resident of Mullen died April 8, 2003, at Pioneer Memorial Rest Home.
She was born Sept. 22, 1910, in Blue Hill to Mollie and Julius C. Piel. She moved to the Mullen Area, when she was eleven where she attended school and then worked.
On Oct. 8, 1928, she married Ray Henry Sexton Sr. in Winner, S.D. They lived their entire life in Mullen and celebrated 71 years of marriage. Five children were born to this union. They established Sexton Truck Line in 1929 and worked together running this business until retirement. Their biggest enjoyment in life was their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but they also enjoyed dancing, traveling, playing cards and visiting with friends. She enjoyed planting flowers, cooking, sewing, knitting and crocheting.
Mrs. Sexton was a member of St. Joseph's Episcopal Church, Rebekah's, American Legion Auxiliary, Pioneer Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and square dance and dance clubs.
Survivors include daughters, Irene (Jerry) Seidler of Alliance, Lola (Gary) Swanson of Colon and Shirley Sweet of North Platte; sons, Ray H. Jr. (Gladys) of Mullen and Clyde (Carol) of Scottsbluff; 18 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray December 1999; her parents; two sisters, Bernedette and Josephine; three brothers, Harry, Mike and Earl; two daughters-in-law, Pat and Joan; a son-in-law, Larry Sweet; a grandchild, Cheryl Seidler.
Memorials are suggested to Pioneer Memorial Rest Home or Cedarview Cemetery or donor's choice.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Mullen with William Graham and the Rev. Mark Danielson officiating. Burial will be in the Cedarview Cemetery in Mullen.
