Helen S. Morton, 95
PRESCOTT, Ariz. - Helen Sophia Morton, 95, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at Mountain View Manor.

Helen was born to Mamie and Frank Beyer in Sidney, on July 3, 1911.

She lived at Alliance from 1942 to 1969. Helen and her husband Richard moved to Greeley, Colo., in 1969 and she lived there until 1999. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Helen will be remembered by family and friends as a woman of strength, kindness and caring.

She was a gifted artist and craftswoman, and found great pleasure in working with her hands. Helen was a devout Catholic and found comfort in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Her funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 19, at Sunset Memorial Gardens at Greeley.

Pallbearers included grandsons Jack Barnitz, Dick Barnitz and Bill Barnitz.

Duane Davies, 54
HEMINGFORD - Duane E. Davies, 54, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, near Hemingford.

He was born April 24, 1952, at Alliance, to Lee and Lucinda (Johnson) Davies.

He grew up in rural Hemingford where he attended District #4 and the Hemingford Public Schools graduating in 1970. On July 29, 1970, he married Brenda L. Stumf at St. Bridget's Catholic Church at Hemingford; and they were blessed with their first child, Lee John, on Feb. 5, 1971.

After having worked for Manion's Conoco and the Jelinek Farms, Duane joined the Army in 1972 where he was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., for two years and Camp Hill near Seoul, S. Korea for one year.

After their return to the states, he continued working on his family farm, and on Aug. 17, 1975, they brought a daughter, Tammy Louise, into the world. In 1976 Duane decided to make a career change and began servicing pivots for Sloan Irrigation at Alliance. On July 25, 1977, their family grew with the addition of their second daughter, Tonya Marie.

Duane couldn't get the love for farming off his heart, so in 1978 he returned to the farm, but as a second job that he performed when he wasn't busy repairing sprinkler systems. With all the hustle and bustle of work and life, time just flew by, and on Jan. 22, 1980, their second son, Adam Duane, was born. However, the family just wasn't quite complete and on Sep. 14, 1981, their youngest daughter, Jackie LaRae, graced the Davies clan.

In 1988 he ventured out on his own and started his business "Duane's Repair" where he serviced sprinkler systems all over the Nebraska Panhandle and parts of Wyoming and South Dakota. As his business grew, so did his farm, family and the number of people he touched throughout his life.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, with Fr. James Heithoff officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Hemingford Cemetery.

Memorials for the American Legion Post No. 9 or the Hemingford Volunteer Fire Department may be sent to the Hemingford Community Federal Credit Union.

John Gentleman, 72
WINDSOR, Colo. - John A. "Jack" Gentleman, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at McKee Medical Center.

Jack was born Sep. 13, 1933, at Omaha, to Cyril C. and Marguerite (Dineen) Gentleman.

Jack attended schools at Omaha, spent three years in. the United States Marines Corps - 1952 -1955 - eighteen months of which were in Korea, and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 36 years, retiring in 1988.

Jack married his love of his life, Patricia A. Steffes, on Dec. 26, 1956, at Omaha. Jack's hobbies included sports, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Mass of Christian Burial was on Friday Aug. 18, from Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church at Windsor, with Fr. James Spahn officiating.

Interment was at Fort Logan National Cemetery with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Larimer County, in care of Marks Funeral & Cremation Service, 9293 Eastman Park Dr, Windsor, Co. 80550.

Dave Henkel Jr., 76
BAYARD - Dave Henkel, Jr., 76, died Wednesday Aug. 16, 2006, at his rural home near Bayard.

Dave was born Aug. 30, 1929, at Scottsbluff to Dave and Pauline (Sinner) Henkel.

He attended school at Minatare. He then went on to do what he loved best, farming. Dave was married to Evelyn Deines on Feb. 13, 1949, at St. James Lutheran Church at Scottsbluff. They spent their life farming in the Bayard area until he semi-retired.

Dave loved his family and cherished the time he had with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dave was instrumental in building on to the church in Bayard, where he was a very proud member and served as church treasurer for 25 years, as well as serving as an elder for a number of years.

He also was a Sunday School Teacher and a Bible Study Leader. He was always there with a helping hand when asked.

His funeral will be at 10:30 p.m. Saturday Aug. 19, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church at Bayard, with Pastor Frank Coniglio officiating. Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 18 at the Church.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church or Prairie Haven Hospice. Condolences may be left at www.jolliffefuneralhome.com, and will be forwarded to his family.

Faye A. Martin, 82
RED WING, Minn. - Faye A. Martin, 82, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, at Fairview Seminary Home.

She was born on May 23, 1924, at Hemingford, Neb., to Harry and Jessie (Clayton) Wildy. She was a graduate of Hemingford High School and attended Nebraska Wesleyan University.

She was married to Leonard "Len" Martin on Oct. 7, 1944, at the Army Air Force Base at Dodge City, Kan. While her husband was stationed overseas, she worked for the Nebraska Stockgrowers Association at Alliance.

Survivors include her husband, Leonard of Red Wing; three children, Dennis D. (Barbara) Martin of Shorewood, Minn., Monty L. (Debra Drew) of Maplewood, Minn., and Pamela K. (Brian) Larson of Arden Hills, Minn; and four grandchildren.

She also is survived by one sister, Doris Hudson of Hemingford; many friends and other relatives.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Wayne Walther officiating.

Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the time of services Friday at the church.

Memorials are preferred to First United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society or Red Wing Area Food Shelf.

Betty J. Kiester, 80
HEMINGFORD - Betty Jean Kiester, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at the Hemingford Community Care Center.

Betty was born Jan. 16, 1926, to Emil and Ellen (Bichel) Knag at the family home northeast of Alliance.

She attended and graduated from Alliance High School. She was married to William L. (Bill) Kiester on July 7, 1946, at Alliance, and they made their home on the Kiester family farm northwest of Hemingford for many years. Bill preceded her in death in December of 1995.

She was a member of the Hemingford United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and the Hemingford American Legion Auxiliary Unit 9.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at the United Methodist Church at Hemingford, with Pastor Jeri Soens officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Hemingford United Methodist Church, the Hemingford Volunteer Fire Department, or the Hemingford Community Care Center.

Roger M. Leedall, 59
ALLIANCE - Roger M. Leedall, 59, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, at the University of Colorado Hospital at Denver.

Roger was born Jan. 8, 1947 at Ottumwa, Iowa, to Vernal C. and Madeline (Bukowski) Leedall.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and returned and married Margaret A. Hamstreet on Oct. 15, 1968, at Ottumwa. She passed away in 2001. He began working for the railroad and was currently working for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway where he had worked for more than 30 years.

He married Donna J. Taylor on April 17, 2006, at Alliance.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. James Rowe officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, with the family present from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Following the funeral service there will be a gathering of friends and family at the Shelter House at the Alliance City Park.

Memorials may be given in care of the family at, 423 Anthony Ave., Alliance, NE 69301.

Mildred Hall, 81
JACKSONVILLE, Texas - Mildred M. Hall, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, following a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Missouri, to Thomas and Nellie Gorman.

They moved to Alliance when she was very young, and farmed south of Alliance in the Letan area. She was married to A.B. "Jack" Hall in 1940.

They raised their four children in the Alliance area and moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1971.

She lived and worked at San Jose until her retirement, when she bought a wooded property in East Texas that she enjoyed until her passing.

Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery at a future date.
