Louise K. Hollen
Louise Katherine Hollen, 93, of North Platte died Jan. 25, 2001, at Linden Court in North Platte.

She was born Sept. 21, 1907, to James and Belle Clark Plummer at Hay Springs. She was raised at Hay Springs where she graduated from high school. After graduation she attended Chadron State College.

On March 22, 1930, she married Harold Hollen in a house a block from where she was born. She had been a linotype operator at various newspapers in Kansas and Nebraska. She and her husband came to North Platte in 1950 and she had lived since.

Mrs. Hollen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, American Association of Retired Persons, Rebekah Lodge and was a charter member of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. She enjoyed lapidary and belonged to the Platte Valley Rock and Mineral Society.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Amye Louise (Scott) Grams of North Platte; a great-grandson, Cameron Grams of North Platte; a daughter-in-law, Sharron Hollen of North Platte; and several nieces and nephews, including Shirley (Charles) Wheeler of North Platte, Gayle (Bill) Jamison of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Bill (Marge) McNamar of Gaylord, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years; a son, Gerald; a grandson; and a brother.

A memorial has been established to the Goodfellow Shoe Fund.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Amy Jo Hawley officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. MST Monday at Hay Springs.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Charles D. Kirbey
Charles D. Kirbey, 61, died Jan. 19, 2001, at the W. Roxbury V.A. Hospital; in Roxbury Mass., after a long illness.

He was born Feb. 4, 1939, to Melville and Viola Kirbey in Granada, Colo. After high school he spent four years in the U.S. Navy, stationed through out the Pacific. He then spent time in New Mexico and Colorado.

In 1971, he married Twilla Walker Kirbey. He was a roofer for a short time before becoming a independent truck driver. In 1991, he began farming with Ernie and Jan Mehl.

He is survived by two daughters, Victoria Drew and Janice Coe, both of Plymouth, Mass.; two sons, Michael of Florida and Charles “Jake” Jr. of North Platte; a mother-in-law, Mina German; a stepdaughter, Valerie of Oklahoma; and 11 grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Charles Kirbey Memorial Fund in care of Mina German, 1005 Autumn Park Drive, Apt. A, North Platte, NE 69010.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 31, 2001, at the Assembly of God Church in North Platte.

Walter Earl Merrihew
ASHBY — Walter Earl Merrihew, 70, of Ashby died Jan. 23, 2001.
He was born Aug. 26, 1939, to Victor Hugo and Dorothy Ellen Patch Merrihew. He graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis.

On April 9, 1951, he married Barbara Anne Schauda of Millburn. They owned the Ashby Lumber Company.

He was a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church and several organizations, including the Sandhills Chamber of Commerce, Grant County Historical Society, Ashby A.V. Club and the rural fire department.

Mr. Merrihew is survived by his wife; a daughter, Diane Faz of Kearney; five sons, Mark of Liberal, Kan., Timothy of Wheeling, Ill., Terry of Alliance, Derek of Marshall, Minn., and Dana of Ralston; 10 grandchildren, Brent Bruce and Frazer Faz of Kearney, Heather Daniels of Bridgeport, Lucinda Bruce of Flora Vista, N.M., Gabriel Merrihew of Lawrence, Kan., Chalin Merrihew of Los Angeles, Morgan Merrihew of San Francisco, and Victor and Natasha Merrihew and JoAnn Gentles, all of Wheeling; a great-granddaughter, Tonya Ellen Daniels of Bridgeport; and a brother, Harry Merrihew of Ashby.

Memorials are suggested in care of the Nebraska Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 639, Alliance, NE 69301 or to Habitat for Humanity P.O. Box 1452, Kearney, NE 68848.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Hyannis with the Rev. Christine Mottl officiating.

Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge.

Mildred L. Price
FAIRFAX, Mo. — Mildred L. Price, 84, mother of Delores Shipley and great-grandmother of Valerie Vickers, both of North Platte, died Jan. 11, 2001, at the Fairfax Community Hospital in Fairfax, Mo.

She was born April 24, 1916, to David and Myrtle Brickey in Mound City, Mo.

On Feb. 7, 1934, she married D.A. Price in Fairfax. She was employed by the Fairfax Community Hospital for 31 years and retired as a surgical technician.

Mrs. Price is survived by three daughters, Delores (Lewis) Shipley of North Platte, Wanda (Don) Thaden of Waco, Texas, and Sharon (Charlie) Jones of Tarkio, Mo.; four sisters, Verlene Stoddard and Jerry Duncan, both of Auburn, Helen South of Salpulpa, Okla., and Beverly Corbin of Fulton, Ill.; a brother, Earl Brickey of San Diego; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death y her husband; her parents; a sister, Ella D. Brickey; three brothers, Nelson, Melvin and Orval Brickey; and a grandson, Lewis Shipley Jr.

Services were Jan. 13, 2001, at the Presbyterian Church in Fairfax. Burial was in the Ridge Cemetery in Fairfax.

Schooler Funeral Home of Fairfax was in charge.

Nellie ‘Chita’ Serrano
Nellie “Chita” Serrano, 65, of North Platte died Jan. 23, 2001, at Premier Estates.

She was born Feb. 11, 1935, to Jesse and Aranda Lopez Navarrete in Platteville, Colo. While she was a child, the family moved to North Platte, where she remained a lifelong resident.
She married Joseph “Manuel” Serrano at North Platte.

Mrs. Serrano was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and enjoyed her family, friends, dancing, cooking, watching the Cornhuskers play football and listening to Mexican music.

Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Joan Navarrete and Sandra (Kermit) Williams, both of North Platte, Dora (Pete) Martinez of Atlanta, Ruthie (Cuca) Dye of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Lorraine Gonzalez of Garden City, Kan.; three sons, Joe Vincent (Linda) of Windsor, Colo., Jimmy (Melissa) of North Platte and Jerry of Lincoln; her grandmother, Domatila Navarrete of Platteville; five sisters, Angel Martinez of Cheyenne, Wyo., Mary Ellen Navarrete and Rosalie Anthens, both of North Platte, Anne Brown of Cameron, Okla., and Vera Garza of Platteville; eight brothers, Jessie Navarrete of Colorado, Joey Navarrete of Colorado Springs, Colo., Richard Navarrete of Cheyenne, Eddy Navarrete of Gothenburg and Johnny, Pete “PeeWee” and Freddie Navarrete and Bobby Alvarado, all of North Platte; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, David; her parents; a brother, Joe Lewis Navarrete; a nephew, Eddy Navarrete Jr.; and a son-in-law, Tommy Dye.

A memorial has been established.

Christian wake services will be at 7 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Chapel in North Platte.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Dillon as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Robert ‘Bob’ Leroy Ward
KEARNEY — Robert ”Bob” Leroy Ward, 69, formerly of Lexington, died Jan. 24, 2001, at Mount Carmel Home in Kearney.

He was born Feb. 13, 1931, at Lexington to Harry and Edith Hagadone Ward. He attended school at Lexington, graduating from Lexington High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1945.

On March 7, 1954, he married Beverly Adams in Lexington. He worked for the U. S. Postal Service, Lexington Public Schools and after moving to Kearney, he worked at Wal-Mart until retiring in 2001.

He enjoyed spending time at the couple’s cabin on Johnson Lake fishing and being with his family. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs as well as the Cornhuskers.

Mr. Ward is survived by his wife and a son, David of Kearney.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four half brothers.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Bobby Payne officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Eva M. Frey Badje

STAPLETON - Eva Marie Frey Badje, 101, of Stapleton died Feb. 22, 2001, at her daughter's home near Stapleton.

She was born July 24, 1899, to Charles H. and Effie M. Straight Dickinson at Little River, Kan. Her family moved to Nebraska from Windom, Kan., in 1906. It took 13 days by covered wagon to make the move. She attended school at Windy Point where she and her brothers and sister walked or drove a horse and buggy four miles to school. She taught at Cooperville School, east of Anselmo and Eureka Valley, 38 miles west of Anselmo. In 1918, during the flu epidemic, she cared for the sick but did not catch the flu.

In 1921, she married Harry R. Frey in York. They lived east of Merna, where they raised hogs and alfalfa. They moved to Stapleton in 1926. He preceded her in death in 1947.

In 1949, she married Roland Trumbull of Tryon. He preceded her in death in 1961.

In 1968, she married Frank Badje of Lyons. He died in 1972. She continued to live on her farm until 1990 when she moved to Stapleton.

She was a member of the Stapleton Presbyterian Church, a member of the board of education for 14 years, served on the Logan County Fair Board, was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was belonged to the Neighborly Extension Club of Arnold, was chairperson of the Logan County Heart Fund and was chairperson for the Nebraska Bicentennial.

Mrs. Badje was treasurer of the 21 Dance Club of North Platte for 33 years. She made 69 quilts and had quilted for many years at the Senior Center. She learned how to quilt from her grandmother when she was young. Her recipe for living 1011/2 years was hard work, fresh air, country life, good home-cooked foods, very few visits to the doctor, being interested in others and a positive attitude. She enjoyed dancing and music her whole life and will be remembered by all as a beautiful lady who danced.

Survivors include a daughter, Dolores Frey of Stapleton; two sons, Calvin LeRoy (Bonnie) Frey of Farragut, Iowa, and Darwin (Lewellyn) Frey of Stapleton; a brother, Gailord Dickinson of Greeley, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Harry; a sister, Esther; and three brothers, Claire, Gerald and Cleve.

A memorial has been established to the Presbyterian Church in Stapleton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church with her nephew, the Rev. Hubert Dickinson, officiating. Burial will be in the McCain Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Jake Fricke

MADRID - Jake Fricke, 86, longtime Madrid resident, died Feb. 20, 2001, at the Chase County Hospital in Imperial.

He was born March 17, 1914, at Burwell to Karl and Omolly Eurick Fricke. He attended school in Burwell and Potter through the eighth grade. He then moved to Madrid.

In 1941, he joined the U.S. Army. He served as a platoon guide for the infantry in the Philippine Islands and was wounded by a grenade at Luzon in 1945. After his honorable discharge from the Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, he returned to Madrid.

In 1953, he married Betty Watts Diehl in Reno, Nev. They spent their entire married life in Madrid where he farmed and was a carpenter. His wife died in 1991 and he moved to the Imperial Manor nursing home in 1992.

Mr. Fricke was a longtime member of the Madrid American Legion and the Ogallala Elks Club.

Surviving him is his stepson, Frederick "Bud" Diehl of Lansing, Mich.; two sisters, Sophie Kosmicki of Exeter and Dorothy Ann Espinosa of Mission Hills, Calif.

The body was cremated and inurnment was in the Madrid Cemetery. There were no other services.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant was in charge.

C. Roger Grosh

C. Roger Grosh, 84, longtime North Platte businessman, died Feb. 22, 2001, at his home.

He was born July 28, 1916, at Kearney to C. Albert and Carolyn Holdeman Grosh. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1934. On Jan. 27, 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and served until his discharge on Feb. 21, 1946.

On June 6, 1958, he married Mildred Yates at North Platte.

Mr. Grosh worked in the food business in Dawson County before coming to North Platte, where he owned Continental Bus Depot Restaurant. He later owned and operated various food businesses, including Rogers Fine Foods.

He spent winters in Sun City West, Ariz., where he enjoyed golf, one of his favorite pastimes. He was a member of the P.R. Halligan American Legion Post 163, Elks Lodge 985 and Moose Lodge 551.

Surviving him is his wife; a sister, Betty (Bob) Hunt of Tonawanda, N.Y.; a brother, George (Pat) Grosh of Chadron; and several nieces and nephews, including John and Daryl Higginbotham of North Platte.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Phyllis Lambert.

Memorials are suggested to the Goodfellow Shoe Fund or Great Plains Regional Medical Center hospice program.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Inurnment will be at a later date in Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.

Those wishing to sign the register book may do so Monday and Tuesday and on Wednesday before services at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.

James Lehmkuhl

WALLACE - James Lehmkuhl, 76, of Wallace died Feb. 22, 2001, at the Perkins County Community Hospital in Grant.

He was born Sept. 4, 1924, in North Platte to Art and Helen Kanjdl Lehmkuhl. The family lived in Beatrice and Wellfleet before moving to Wallace in 1939. He graduated from Wallace High School in 1942. He worked for Nelson Chevrolet in North Platte until 1944, when he joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the infantry in Italy and was engaged in combat. After his discharge in 1947, he returned to Wallace. He worked for Stewart Evans in the RV Equipment Co.

Mr. Lehmkuhl was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans in North Platte and he was a charter member of the Wallace American Legion Post.

He is survived by a sister, Bernice (Hubert) Eilers of Delavan, Ill., and a brother, Lloyd (Edyth) Lehmkuhl of Wallace.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Hengen.

A memorial has been established to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wallace.

Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church in Wallace. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. David Drewelow celebrant. Burial will be in the Wallace Cemetery with military honors by the Wallace American Legion.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.
