A. William Leth

Arthur William “Bill” Leth, 100, of North Platte died Feb. 9, 2001.

He was born Oct. 18, 1900, to Mads Christian and Anna Sophia Leth in a two-room sod house in Howard County. The family was part of the Danish Community of Dannevirke.

In 1908, the family purchased a section of land south and west of North Platte. The family, their possessions and their livestock were moved to North Platte by an “immigrant boxcar” on the Union Pacific Railroad. When the boxcar was unloaded, Mr. Leth and his older brother Charles, who was 12, were given the task of herding cattle by horseback, fording the South Platte River at the Birdwood Crossing to the piece of prairie they had purchased.

During the first year, a farmhouse and barn were built and fences were put up. Prairieland was plowed for the first time and crops were planted and harvested. Going to town involved hitching up a team of horses to a wagon and driving across the prairie. Walker Road didn’t exist yet and the streets of North Platte were dirt and mud. There were hitching posts for horses instead of parking meters for cars.

In 1909, his father built a one-room schoolhouse so the Leth children and the neighbor children could be assured of an education. It was called “The Leth School.” Two generations of Leth children attended school through the eighth grade.

As he grew up, he knew farming and ranching was his chosen vocation. The same was true for his brother, Walter, so they purchased land and set up their own farming operation under the “Leth Brothers” partnership. They were successful farmers for many years.

On April 20, 1974, he married Lucille Vencill.

At the age of 74, with Lucille by his side, he made some life changes. They bought a house in North Platte, retired from active farming and spent a good deal of their time traveling and visiting family and friends. She preceded him in death Dec. 31, 1993.

He spent the last years of his life at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

Mr. Leth is survived by two stepdaughters, Mary Lu (Bernard) Loebsock of Englewood, Colo., and Pat (Marvin) Burkhart of San Jose, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Frances Leth of Centralia, Wash.; a brother, Elmer (Rosie) Leth of Wheatland, Wyo.; four nieces, Harriett Leth Weil and Kathryn A. Leth, both of North Platte, Shirley Henderson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Susan Leth of Coos Bay, Ore.; four nephews, Glenn Leth of North Platte, Ted Leth of Mead, Colo., Robert Leth of Gordon and Bill Leth of Centralia; special friends Grant and Leila Remus and Doris Kugler and their families; and other friends and neighbors.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Nathan Wadewitz officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.
