Bruce A. Larson, 54
HAY SPRINGS - Bruce A. Larson, 54, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at his home.

He was born April 18, 1952, at Chadron, to D.O. "Bud" and Velma (Hetzel) Larson.

Bruce spent most of his life at Hay Springs where he graduated from high school in 1970. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chadron State College. Early in his career, he moved back to Hay Springs to take care of his Dad's insurance agency.

During the past few years, he had been an independent agent for Financial Brokerage and was on their board - the Inner Circle. He also managed the family farms as well as his own. Bruce worked hard, but also enjoyed his leisure time - fishing, hunting, golfing, and supporting the Haw athletes and Huskers.

His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Hay Springs United Methodist Church, with Pastor Rodney Heilbrun officiating. Interment will follow at the Hay Springs Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Jack D. Latham, 59
ALLIANCE - Jack D. Latham, 59, passed peacefully surrounded by his family at his home at Alliance, on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, after fighting a courageous yearlong battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Born to Johnny and Bessie Latham on July 26, 1947, at Lubbock, Texas, he attended high school at Garden City, Kan., and then served his country in the Vietnam War as a member of the US Army.

He graduated from Missouri State University with a degree in Accounting and began his career with Frisco/Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.

He was employed by BNSF for 36 years, starting at Springfield, Mo., and taking him and his family to Lincoln, Galesburg, Ill., and Alliance, where he was currently Material Manager.

He married Karen Henry on March 23, 1975.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Klingner-Cope White Chapel Funeral Home at Springfield.Burial will be at White Chapel Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Prairie Haven Hospice, United Methodist Church at Alliance, or The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN).

Marjorie Voss, 90
EUGENE, Ore. - Marjorie Voss, 90, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006.

She was born Dec. 14, 1916, at Alma to Les and Norma Shoemaker.

She was raised at Alliance and graduated from Alliance High School. She was married to Elmer Voss about 1940. He preceded her in death in 1998.

Buell Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Patricia M. Case, 74
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Patricia M. Case, 74, passed away on Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at Las Vegas, where she has been hospitalized for some time with cancer.

She had recently moved to Arizona from Fallbrook, Calif., where she was a resident for many years.Pat was born on August 2, 1932.

She was married to William K. Case of Alliance. They moved to California in 1965 and lived in the Lakewood area for many years. After William's death in 1984, Pat moved to Fallbrook, where she owned and operated a dinner house and two ladies' clothing stores before retiring a few years ago.

Services will be Saturday, Dec. 30, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Cypress, Calif.

John D. Elliott, 26
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - John David Elliott, 26 passed away unexpectedly Sunday Dec. 17, 2006, as a result of injuries sustained in a mining accident.

John was born June 18, 1980, at Morgantown, the son of John Arthur Elliot of Bayard, and Mary Hofmann Elliott of Alliance.

John graduated from Morgantown High School in 1998 and later received his electrician license. He was employed by the Dana Mining Company as a mechanic electrician at the Prime No. 1 mine. John had many hobbies but had a particular passion for the outdoors.

He especially loved shooting, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends. He was Episcopalian by faith.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, with Rev. Kirk Haas officiating. Burial will follow at the East Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, and from 10 a.m. to service time Friday.

Donations to honor John can be made to his children's trust fund to The Nicholas Bell and Sophia Elliott Trust Fund Huntington Bank, 201 High St., Morgantown, WV 26501.

Mamie Opheim, 90
THEDFORD - Mamie Agnes Opheim died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006.

Mamie Agnes Thurston was born Sept. 2, 1916, to Clyde and Mamie (McCawley) Thurston, one half mile north of Ashby.

She received her early schooling at Ashby, then attended St. Agnes Academy at Alliance her senior year, graduating in 1933. After attending Chadron Normal Summer School, she taught the Gentry school north of Hyannis for one year, then the Survey Valley school 30 miles north of Ashby for three years. After attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, she served as County Superintendent of Schools at Hyannis for eight years.

On June 1, 1940, she was married to Russell Francis Booth, who worked at Ashby Lumber Co. In October of 1940, the moved to Whitman, where he ran the Whitman Lumber Co., In 1949, they moved to the Thurston ranch north of Hyannis.

They adopted Tony Kim in 1950. Russell sold insurance for Equitable Life, and in 1954, they moved to Thedford. After Russell's death in 1967, Mamie continued with the insurance business.

Mamie was married to Marvin Opheim in 1972, and with Tony as a partner, they purchased the Mercure property east of Thedford and started operating as Opheim-Booth Repair.

After Marvin's death in 1990, she continued to help with the business calling herself the "hello girl." In January 2006, she became a resident of Sandhills Manor at Broken Bow. Belonging to organizations and helping in the development of the sandhills way of life was always a joy to Mamie.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. MDT Friday, Dec. 22, at the United Church of Christ at Thedford, with interment at the Hill Crest Cemetery. Lunch will be served after the service.

Memorials may be given to the UCC Church, the Hill Crest Cemetery or the donor's choice. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday.

Arnold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Werner, 79
ALLIANCE - Margaret Cecilia "Marge" Werner, 79, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Highland Park Care Center.

Marge was born on June 26, 1927, at Brooklyn, N.Y., the only child of Walter and Margaret Mary (Seiz) Werner.

At an early age the family moved to Queens, N. Y. Marge's father died in 1945 and her mother in 1963. She grew up at Queens.

After her father died she had to discontinue her college plans and work to support her mother. She worked for the New York Telephone Company, where she held management positions in the Business office for 33 years.

She later lived at Flushing, N.Y., and was an active member of the Telecom Pioneers. Her friends were many. She loved to travel and left a trail to Australia, Spain, Venezuela, China, Virgin Islands, Alaska, Kenya, Tanzania, Canada, Italy, Poland, and Switzerland. In 1979 she came to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota as a volunteer at St. Francis Mission.

She helped establish a new retreat office with Sister Helen Borszich, O.S.F., which later became the lcimani Ya Waste' Retreat Center.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at St. Charles Catholic Church at St. Francis, with Monsignor William O'Connell officiating. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery.

Wake services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Marian Residence at Alliance, and Friday, Dec. 15 at Digmann Hall at St. Francis, S.D.

Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance and Holmes Funeral Home of Valentine are in charge of arrangements.

April E. Wren, 60
RIVERTON, Wyo. - April E. Wren, 60, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at the Wyoming Medical Center at Casper.

April Elaine Apgar was born at Kalispell, Mont., on April 25, 1946, the daughter of Harvey and Dorothy (Harper) Apgar.

She moved to Riverton while in the elementary grades. While her family said she enjoyed moving to new places, she had "come home" to Riverton nine years ago. Mrs. Wren was a housewife for her family.

In addition she enjoyed taking pictures, having an Associate's degree in Photography. She also enjoyed her grandchildren, was involved with her family, and liked fishing and camping.

According to her wishes cremation will take place and a memorial service is planned for the spring of 2007.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton.

Virginia Zobel, 80
HAY SPRINGS - Virginia H. Zobel, 80, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at her home.

She was born Oct. 4, 1926, at Alliance, to Andrew and Agnes (Creevan) Shaughnessy.

She was married to Aden "Lee" Zobel on Feb. 18, 1947. Virginia was a dedicated mom and loving wife. She was an active member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church, lifetime member of The American Legion Auxiliary, Twon and Country Club and Sheridan County Extension.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, with Fr. Tim Stoner officiating.

Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery at Alliance. The Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at the church.

Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary of Hay Springs is in charge of arrangements.
