Esther ‘Jane’ Johnson
BERTRAND — Esther “Jane” Johnson, 72, of Bertrand, formerly of North Platte, died Feb. 12, 2001, at the Bertrand Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 14, 1928, to Robert Garfield and Mary Edna Shulte Putnam at Tarrytown, N.Y. She attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York, where she was an accomplished string instrumentalist

On Sept. 7, 1957, she married F. Dwight Johnson. While living in North Platte she taught string instruments for the North Platte Public Schools, worked as a dietitian at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center and taught diet therapy at Mid-Plains Community College.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband; two daughters, JoAnn (Grant) Gieselman of Mason City, Iowa, and Mary Jane (Mike) Gardine of Bertrand; a son, Kenneth (Pamela) of North Platte; six grandchildren, Cassie, Colby, Ryan and Shelby Gardine of Bertrand, and Matthew and Jennifer Gieselman of Mason City; three sisters-in-law, Betty Putnam of Ossing, N.Y., Gloria Putnam of Danbury, Conn., and Janice (George) Mansfield of Englewood, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Sam Johnson of Lakewood, Colo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Harry Putnam; and a brother-in-law, Ronnie Johnson.
A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Bertrand with the Rev. Fred Andersen officiating. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated.

Nelson-Harris Funeral Home of Holderege is in charge.

Irene G. Ottun
BROKEN BOW — Irene G. Ottun, 82, of Broken Bow, formerly of the Round Valley community in Custer County, died Feb. 10, 2001, at the Heritage Hall nursing home in Broken Bow.

She was born Sept. 25, 1918, in the Antelope Valley Community near Sargent to Benjamin and Della West Russell. She attended Antelope Valley rural school and graduated from Sargent High School in 1937. She also attended Kearney Teachers College.

On March 21, 1942, she married Harold Ottun. They spent all their married life in the Round Valley community, where they farmed and ranched.

She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow, taught Sunday school classes for many years, helped with vacation Bible school and worked with the Awana Clubs.

Mrs. Ottun is survived by two daughters, Cynthia (Tracy) Johnson of San Diego and Gloria Engstrom of Oak Park, Ill.; a son, Virgil (Barbara) of Fremont; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Julie, Craig, Sara, John, Andrew and Alex; a sister, Violet Clausen of Stapleton; and a sister-in-law, Grace Russell of Sargent.

She was preceded in death by her husband; twin infant sons, Victor and Vance; her parents; two sisters and five brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Bob Winn officiating. Burial will be in the Round Valley Cemetery in Custer County.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Harold Keith Potter
BRIDGEPORT — Harold Keith Potter, 72, of Bridgeport, formerly of Hershey and York, died Feb. 10, 2001, at the Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport.

He was born March 30, 1928, in Hershey to Edwin Homer and Lena E Huebner Potter. He attended Huebner Grade School District 26 and graduated from Hershey High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

On June 30, 1957, he married Maxine Ludwick in York. They lived in York and he worked for Ludwick Well Service.

On Sept. 5, 1998, he married Helena Cox in Bridgeport.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Potter is survived by his wife, Helena; three sons, Robert (Linda Taborek) of Lincoln, Gary (Jenny) of York, and Joel and his special friend, Amy Weiss, of Lincoln; a brother, Gordon (Elizabeth) Potter of Greeley, Colo.; two stepsons, Karl (Jacque) Cox of Amarillo, Texas, and John (Mary) Cox of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a stepdaughter, Karen (Bob) Miller of Bridgeport; and five grandchildren, Rani Taborek-Potter of Lincoln, and Katrina, Stephannie, Nicole and Alexander Potter of York.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and his parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Haven Hospice and the church.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Presbyterian Church in York with the Rev. Harry Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in York with military honors.

Metz Mortuary of York and Bridgeport-Bayard Memorial Chapels of Bridgeport are in charge.

Doris D. Shields
CURTIS — Doris D. Shields, 95, of Curtis died Feb. 10, 2001 at her home.

She was born March 27, 1905, to Micheal and Augusta Gragg Owens in Stockville.

She was married to Carl Shields, and he preceded her in death Dec. 23, 1991.

Mrs. Shields is survived by two granddaughters, Shelly (Scott) Banzhaf of Burlingame, Kan., and Sherry (Adam) Hirsch of Ankeney, Iowa; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today in the Arbor Cemetery in Stockville with the Rev. Shirley Carpenter of Curtis officiating

Lockenouir-Jones Mortuary of Cambridge is in charge.

Verna M. Bellamy
COZAD — Verna Bellamy, 91, of Cozad died Feb. 12, 2001, at her home.

She was born June 20, 1909, at Stapleton, to Oliver and Mary Flynn Trumbull. She graduated from Lexington High School and attended Kearney State Teachers College. She later worked for several years for an insurance-real estate office in Lexington.
On Sept. 18, 1932, she married Francis Bellamy. They lived in Lexington before moving to Cozad in 1948. Her husband preceded her in death in 1966.

She joined the Methodist Church in Lexington in 1928, and transferred her membership to the First United Methodist Church in Cozad. She was a charter member of the Cozad Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the MON-D craft club.

Mrs. Bellamy is survived by a son, Lanny (Connie) of Brownsville, Texas; a sister, Lenora Shores of Nebraska City, eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Willard; an infant son; three sisters; and a brother.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the Cozad Hospital Auxiliary.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Cozad with the Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Ellsworth ‘Al’ Harris
CORNING, Iowa — Ellsworth “Al” Harris, 83, of Corning, Iowa, formerly of North Platte, died Feb. 6, 2001, at the Corning Nursing Home.

He was born May 29, 1917, to Albert Charles and Maude Williams Harris in Carthage, S.D. He attended school in Grant, Iowa, area schools.

On May 24, 1969, he married Geneva Chafen in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and they lived in North Platte from 1972 until 1989. He remained in North Platte at Oak Manor until February 1998 when he returned to Corning to live with his brother, Marvin.

He enjoyed playing the harmonica with the Music Makers of North Platte and other organizations in Corning.

Mr. Harris is survived by a stepdaughter, Evelyn Phelen of North Platte; three grandchildren, Karen (Ira) Ditch of Hershey, Susan (David) Ellis of Olathe, Kan., and Diane Phelen of Spring City, Penn; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters; and two brothers.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Fern Henry Harris; his second wife, Geneva Chafen; his parents; three sisters; and four brothers.

Roland Powers Funeral Home of Corning was in charge.

Charles C. Oliver
CALLAWAY — Charles C. Oliver, 71, of Callaway died Feb. 9, 2001, near Broken Bow.

He was born Dec. 24, 1929, in Lansing, Mich., to Charles S. and Hilda Hiatt Oliver. He grew up in Michigan where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army from August 1947 to September 1948, re-enlisted and was discharged again in 1950.

He lived most of his adult life in Michigan, where he worked in sales. He also owned and operated several collectible and antique businesses in the Michigan area for many years, and a fruit and vegetable stand for 15 years at Eaton Rapids, Mich. During this time, he made many generous food donations to various charitable homes. He also helped raise a very large family of his own. He moved to Callaway two years ago.

Mr. Oliver is survived by three daughters, Terri Sparks of Kearney, and Sharl (Rick) Ruggs and Shelly Morgan, all of Lansing; a son, Chuck (Molly) of Callaway; 10 grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jamie; his parents; a sister; and two brothers.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Callaway with the Rev. Lincoln Justice officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Chapel Hill Cemetery in Lansing.

Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge.

Otis Rose
INMAN — Otis Rose, 69, of Inman, father of Barbara Call of North Platte, died Feb. 4, 2001, at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill.

Mr. Rose is survived by his wife, Cathy; four daughters, Barbara (Joe) Call of North Platte, and Susan (Gary) Thomas, Patty Scott and Peggy Dein, all of Blair; three stepsons, Bob Everhart of Omaha, Dick (Sherry) Everhart of Blair and John (Sharon) Everhart of Guthrie, Okla.; a sister, Charlene (Carlos “Bud”) Votaw of Wellfleet; a brother, Donald (Pat) Rose of Red Bluff, Calif.; eight grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill and will be conducted by the O’Neill Garfield Masonic Lodge 95 AF&AM. The body was cremated. Inurnment of the cremains will be at a later date in the Wellfleet Cemetery.

Biglin’s Mortuary of O’Neill is in charge.

Racheal Shrake
Racheal Shrake, 88, of North Platte died Feb. 11, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

She was born March 30, 1912, in McCook to John and Marie Barbara Stroh Walters. She grew up and attended schools in McCook.

On April 21, 1935, she married Fred Shrake in McCook. The couple moved to North Platte where they owned Shrake Auto Body, where she helped with the bookkeeping.

She belonged to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, the North Platte Country Club, Signet Chapter 55 Order of the Eastern Star and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Does, Drove 109. She enjoyed playing golf, cards and playing bridge.

Mrs. Shrake is survived by her husband; two nieces, Grace McQuiston of Hastings and Anna Grosenbach of Pamona, Calif.; two nephews, Leonard (Anita) Tanner of Seattle and Stan (Erna) Martin of Allen, Texas; and other great-nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Katie Martin; and two brothers, George and Johnny.

Memorials are suggested to the church or to the 20th Century Veterans’ Memorial.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte with the Rev. Dr. Nathan Wadewitz officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery, south of Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Sanford Dee Hutsell
BRANDON — Sanford Dee Hutsell, 54, originally from the Brandon area, died Feb. 12, 2001, in Billings, Mont.

He was born Dec. 9, 1946, in Grant to Clifford and Dulcle Dull Hutsell. He attended school in Venango and graduate from Venango High School in 1965. He then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and earned his degree in geology. In 1969, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. After his discharge in 1971, he returned to college in Montana and received his master’s degree in environmental engineering.

Mr. Hutsell had worked for several years from Clovis (N.M.) Air Force Base, specializing in waste clean-up. He had been transferred to Great Falls, Mont., and died en route in Billings from an apparent heart attack.

He is survived by his mother of Grant; three sisters, Josie Roper of Flagstaff, Ariz., Jennifer (Steve) Buell of Fremont and Tanya Walters of Denver; and a brother, Dennis (Pat) of Denver.

Inurnment will be at 3 p.m. CST Friday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery with John Long of Grant officiating.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.
