Eloise Rowley Shirlaw
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Eloise Rowley Shirlaw, 71, formerly of North Platte, died Dec. 12, 2000, in Phoenix.

She was born May 29, 1929, in North Platte to Leonard and Minnie Rowley. She graduated from high school in 1946.

On Aug., 7, 1948, she married DeWayne “Art” Shirlaw.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Wayne, Bill and Duke; three sisters, Isla Lookhart of North Platte, Phyllis Wilkins of Sterling, Colo., and Bonnie Hathaway of Alburn; a sister-in-law, Charlene Rowley of North Platte; a brother-in-law, Denver (Dolly) Shirlaw of North Platte; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Don and Tom Rowley.

Donald E. Leigh
CALLAWAY — Donald E. Leigh, 77, of Callaway died Feb. 6, 2001, at the Callaway District Hospital.

He was born Feb. 25, 1923, to John A. and Ella K. Dickman Leigh near Callaway, where he lived all his life. He graduated from Callaway High School in 1940 and enjoyed attending his 60th class reunion last June. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then returned home to farm.

On April 11, 1954, he married Marjorie Jean Schipporeit at the United Methodist Church in Callaway. He continued to farm and ranch with his brother, Calvin, until retiring in 1991.

Mr. Leigh was a member of the United Methodist Church and had served as co-treasurer with his wife for 25 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 59 and had coached baseball several years.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate. He also enjoyed playing cribbage, pool and throwing horseshoes with his friends.

Surviving him is his wife; four daughters, Debra Leigh and friend Dale Jacobson of Omaha, Shari (Ron) Sheppard and Tami (Leon) Smith, all of Callaway, and D.D. (Al) Perry of Denver; a son, Robert (Denise) of Grand Island; five grandchildren, Lance, Brandon and Leigh Anne Smith and Logan Leigh and Spencer Perry; three stepgrandchildren, Michelle and Dan Smith of Columbus, Blake and Tracy Sheppard of Lincoln and Lynette and Jeff Willis of Callaway; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Alea and Evan Smith, Carly and Brett Sheppard and Hunter Willis; a sister, Alice Leigh of Callaway; two brothers, Johnnie (Doloris) Leigh of Callaway and Delbert (Alma) Leigh of Broken Bow; his mother-in-law, Evelyn Schipporeit of Callaway; a sister-in-law, Donna (Wayne) Hogg of Callaway; a brother-in-law, Vern Erickson of Huron, S.D.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mildred Erickson; and three brothers, Marvin, Francis and Calvin.
Memorials are suggested to the Callaway District Hospital Foundation or the Callaway Community Building Fund.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Callaway with the Rev. Lincoln Justice officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway.

Della J. McCready
Della J. McCready, 83, of North Platte died Feb. 6, 2001, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.

She was born Nov. 10, 1917, the only child of Edwin H. and Marie Kottmeyer Imm at Alma. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She grew up in Alma and graduated from Alma High School in 1935. Years later she enjoyed attending her 25th and 50th class reunions.

On Sept. 28, 1938, she married Donald C. McCready. They lived in Hastings and Scottsbluff. Her husband was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII and she spent time with him in Kentucky and California before his service in the Pacific.

Mrs. McCready was a clerk in the Alma post office until after the war. After WWII, they lived in Alma and ran a pop-bottling works. Their only daughter was born at Holdredge in 1948. They later moved to McCook and North Platte, where she had resided since.
She was caretaker for her parents for several years before their deaths. She was an avid Cornhusker and Denver Broncos fan. She enjoyed playing cards with close friends, doing crossword puzzles and visiting with neighbors. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte.

Surviving her is a daughter, Linda (Doug) Kapke of Burwell; a sister-in-law, Frances McCready of Dayton, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Arley Howsden of Chico, Calif.; several nieces and nephews, including Donna Eisenhauer of Alma; numerous cousins and friends; and a special friend, Helena Rebman of Alma.

Her husband preceded her in death on Nov. 10, 1966. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the donor’s choice.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Nathan Wadewitz officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Betty Ruth Naylor
CALLAWAY — Betty Ruth Naylor, a 1946 graduate of Callaway High School, died Feb. 3, 2001, at her home in Corona, Calif. She was 72.

She was born Oct. 1, 1928, on the North Table to Hubert Forrest and Thelma Evelyn Fochtman Shipley. She grew up in Callaway. After attending Kearney Teachers College for a year, she taught for three years in rural schools around Callaway.

On June 1, 1949, she married Robert Eugene Naylor in Callaway. She was a homemaker and also worked at the Right Drug Store, Leo’s Market, Callaway Cafe, Loup Valley Queen and the Callaway Hospital. In 1983, she and her husband moved to California, where she baby-sat for several families and later for her own grandchildren.

Mrs. Naylor’s greatest pleasure was her family. She enjoyed reading, counted cross-stitch and writing letters. She never missed a birthday or anniversary.

Surviving her is her husband; a daughter, Becky (Dave) Mitchell of Alliance; two sons, Kevin (Olga) of Corona and Kent (Machelle) of Alliance; four grandchildren, Ethan, Austin, Caleb and Crysta; and Marcus Jr. and Mary Rocha and their three children, who had “adopted” her as their mother and grandmother.

Memorial services will be today at the Sierra Memorial Chapel Mortuary in Riverside, Calif.

Local services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Callaway with the Rev. Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge.

William M. Ryan
O’NEILL — William McDonald Ryan, father of Bill Ryan of North Platte, died Feb. 6, 2001, at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill. He was 83.

He was born April 3, 1917, at Tilden to Joseph James and Leona McDonald Ryan. He graduated from Tilden Public School in 1935. He attended Creighton University from 1935 to 1936. He then attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1940 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He worked at U.S. War College prior to entering the U.S. Air Force in 1942. He was in active duty until 1946 and remained in the reserves until 1956, retiring with the rank of major.

On Feb. 4, 1953, he married Mary Gayle Crouse at Neligh.

Mr. Ryan moved to O’Neill in 1963 to manage Moore Noble, later known as Carhart Lumber Co. He retired in 1987. He served on the company’s board of directors.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Colleen (Max) Ballinger of Ooltewah, Tenn.; three sons, Dennis (Roxanne) of Atkinson, Kevin (Brook) of Aurora, Colo., and Bill (Kim) of North Platte; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill and the Tilden Library.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Thomas and Joseph.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill. Burial with military rites by the O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93 will be in the O’Neill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today with Rosary recited at 8 p.m. at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill.

Theodore L. Searles
LEXINGTON — Theodore L. Searles of Mesa, Ariz., who was married to the former Viola P. Vollmer of Lexington, died Feb. 3, 2001, at Gilbert, Ariz. He was 90.

He was born Dec. 2, 1910, to Elbert L. and Olive Anne Ruddick Searles.

The Rev. Searles retired after 50 years in the ministry.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Fortune and Shirley Searles, both of Mesa, and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington with the Rev. Wesley Russell officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Darla Dickenson
OGALLALA — Darla Dickenson, 59, of Ogallala died Feb. 8, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

She was born Aug. 10, 1941, in Chadron, to William and Julia Wilson Dickenson. When she was young they moved to North Platte and she attended school there.

In November 1985, she moved to Ogallala where she became a member of PAKS Services. She stocked shelves for Pamida and Sapp Bros., and worked for PAKS Day Services.

She is survived by a brother, Wayne (Gwen) Dickenson of North Platte; a sister-in-law, Lois Dickenson of Paxton; an aunt, Wilma Long of North Platte; special friends, Leonard Spencer and Tracie Sauer; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Juanita Jessup; a brother, Robert J. Dickenson; and a nephew, Donald Dickenson.

Memorials are suggested to PAKS Developmental Service of Ogallala.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. MST Sunday at the Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala. The family will receive friends at that time. The body will be cremated.

Richard C. Lockhart
SOUTH SIOUX CITY — Richard C. Lockhart, 80, of South Sioux City, brother of Ruth Reynolds of Maxwell, died Dec. 26, 2000, at the Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City.

He was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Utica, S.D., to Richard and Harriet C. Lockhart. They moved to the Stapleton community in 1922. He attended Banner School and Baker Rural High School. He enlisted in the U.S Navy following Pearl Harbor and was a gunner’s mate on the USS Mississippi in the Pacific Theater.

After his discharge, he lived for several years in California before returning to North Platte, where he lived for several years. He then moved to eastern Nebraska. He was an over-the-road truck driver for most of his adult life.

Mr. Lockhart is survived by his wife, Mildred and her son, Steve; a son, Richard L. (Kathie) and family of Bellevue; three daughters, Christine Lockhart of Kansas, Tink Lockhart (Brad Hamman) of Idaho and Laura Dee (John) Lutzow and family of Florida; two sisters, Betty Northey of Tacoma, Wash., and Ruth Reynolds of Maxwell; two brothers, Art Lockhart of Arthur County and Dave Lockhart of Houston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann; an infant daughter, Karen; and his parents.

The body was cremated.

Sibbio L. Martinez
Sibbio Martinez, 60, of North Platte died Feb. 7, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Aug. 14, 1940, to Seferino R. and Elena Luna Martinez at Sutherland. He grew up in Sarbin, and later moved to North Platte. He worked at the Pawnee Retirement Hotel and later for Bob Stone Sanitation.

He was a member of the Centro Cristiano-Spanish Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed singing and praying. He also enjoyed fishing, working on bicycles, in his garden and his family.

Mr. Martinez is survived by three sisters, Dorothy (Robert) Ponce, Ramona (Rick) Clark and Julia (Bob Holliday) Martinez, all of North Platte; two brothers, Simon (Mary) Martinez of North Platte and Jessie (Vicky) Martinez of Hershey; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and his church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Stella; three brothers, Crispen, Domingo and Benedict Joseph; and a nephew, Cameron.

Memorials are suggested to the Centro Cristiano-Spanish Assembly of God Church, 621 E. 11th Street.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Ramon Rodriguez officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte with the family receiving friends at 7 p.m.

Edith Scott
BROKEN BOW — Edith Scott, 92, of Broken Bow died Feb. 7, 2001, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
She was born May 22, 1908, to David D. and Pearl Ogden James at Duff.

On Feb. 5, 1937, she married Robert P. Scott at Burwell. They farmed in various communities and lived for several years in the Cummings Park area northwest of Sargent. Later, they moved to Iowa where they lived near Kellerton. They returned to Broken Bow 13 years ago.

Mrs. Scott is survived by a niece, Judy Gruber of Sargent; a nephew, Richard L. James of Issaquah, Wash.; a brother-in-law, Samuel Scott of Broken Bow; and two sisters-in-law, Avis Guggenmos of Ogallala and Guyneth Orvis of Broken Bow.
She was preceded in death by her husband June 14, 2000; her parents; and two brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with LeRoy Sanford and Alfred Broady officiating. Burial will be in the Dry Valley Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Steve N. Wilkinson
BILLINGS, Mont. — Steve N. Wilkinson, 58, of Billings, Mont., formerly of North Platte and stepson of Katherine Wilkinson of North Platte, died Feb. 6, 2001.

He was born Aug. 9, 1942, in North Platte to Harley E. and Christina Claire Wilkinson, both of whom proceeded him in death.
He grew up in North Platte where he attended McDaid Elementary, St. Patrick High School and North Platte Senior High School, where he played football. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS George Clymer in the Pacific 7th Fleet for three years.

He returned to North Platte and was a salesman for PPG Industries in 1963. In 1975, he was promoted to store manager in Lincoln. After that he managed the PPG branch in Billings and in 1982 was named regional manager, working out of Denver. In 1987, he purchased the Billings branch of PPG Industries and renamed it Northwest Glass. Just recently he purchased Econo Glass.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. In the last few years, walleye fishing became his passion.

Mr. Wilkinson is survived by his wife, Joan of Billings; a daughter, Kirstie Wilkinson of Honolulu; a son, Jeffrey (Heather) of Denver; a grandson, Matthew Wilkinson of Denver; his stepmother, Katherine Wilkinson of North Platte; two sisters, Kay (Wayne) King and Mary Claire (Greg) Batie; and a brother, Greg Wilkinson.
Memorials are suggested to the Catholic Relief Services, 209 W. Fayette St., Baltimore, MD 21201.

Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Billings. Following cremation, local services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in North Platte. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary and Crematory of Billings is in charge and Carpenters Memorial Chapel is in charge of local arrangments.
