Sherwin Lue Briggs

IMPERIAL - Sherwin Lue Briggs, 71, of Imperial died March 17, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Aug. 29, 1929, at Holyoke, Colo., to Herbert Charles and Emma Carolina North Briggs. He grew up in Lamar and graduated from Imperial High School in 1947.

He joined the U.S. Army in June 1951 at Denver and was discharged in May 1953 at Camp Carson, Colo. After his discharge, he went to Kansas City, Mo. He became interested in electronics and worked with television and radio repair. In the late 1950s, he was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration at Kansas City Municipal Airport, working as an electronic specialist for about 30 years.

In 1955, he married Muriel Arner at Carthage, Mo. She preceded him in death in 1962.

On Feb. 7, 1963, he married Carol Ann Martin at Leavenworth, Kan., where they made their home. They moved to Champion in 1986 and to Imperial in 1997.

Mr. Briggs enjoyed going to coffee at the Community Center. He was a member of the Imperial Eagles Club and the National Rifle Association.

Surviving him is his wife, Carol; a daughter, Robin (James) Dominick of Leavenworth, Kan.; two sons, Paul (Diane) of Clearwater, Kan., and Charles of Effingham; two sisters, Norma Whittington and twin sister, Shirley Lee, both of Denver; six grandchildren, Joshua and Kevin Williams, James Dominick and Ashley, Maureen and Ian Briggs; two great-grandchildren, Emilee and Terrah Williams; a sister-in-law, Eula Briggs of Imperial; and nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Willard Hill; and a brother, Charles Briggs.

The body was cremated. There will be no services.

Odean Colonial Chapel of North Platte was in charge.

Raymond E. Martin

OGALLALA - Raymond E. Martin, 76, of Ogallala died March 17, 2001, at the Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala.

He was born Feb. 1, 1925, at Ogallala to Leo and Katherine Girmann Martin. He grew up and attended schools in Ogallala. At age 12, he played the pipe organ in the old Catholic Church in Ogallala. He served in the 3rd Army Engineers in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Ogallala.

On Feb. 6, 1947, he married Marcelene Fruit. She preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 1990.

Mr. Martin operated the Conoco Service Station and the bulk fuel plant for several years. He also was a salesman for Karman Western Wear. In 1972, he purchased the Shoe Mart and operated the store for 20 years before retiring.

On Aug. 15, 1992, he married Donna Kugler.

He was instrumental in building the Ogallala Trap Range and enjoyed trap shooting. He enjoyed music and played the organ almost daily.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; two sons, Randy (Karen) and Lonny (Angie), both of Estes Park, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Mary (Terry) Kauk of Alma; two stepsons, Don (Becky) Kugler of Gering and Ron (Michelle) Kugler of Ogallala; three grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren.

A memorial has been established.

Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Gubser Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Catholic Church with the Rev. John Schlaf as celebrant. Inurnment will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

The body was cremated and there will be no visitation.

Gubser Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruth E. O'Meara

LEXINGTON - Ruth E. O'Meara, 80, of Lexington died March 17, 2001, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

She was born in Sumner on May 17, 1920. Her parents were Floyd Summers and Mildred Spellmeyer. She attended school in Sumner and graduated in 1938 from Eddyville High School. She then moved to Grand Island where she worked for the Ordinance Plant during World War II.

On May 15, 1946, she married Thomas O'Meara at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Eddyville. The couple moved to Lexington in 1956. She spent most of her time raising her family and worked for Lexington Laundry for 15 years. She retired in 1982.

Mrs. O'Meara was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, following the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves. On her 80th birthday, she was able to go to Denver to see the Colorado Rockies. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Surviving her are three daughters, Julie (Louie) Fettig of Fort Lupton, Colo., Ann (Bob) Brown of Lexington and Eileen (Larry) Burkey of Broken Bow; a son and his fiance, Richard Thomas and Sandy Podliska of Leigh; 23 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999; a daughter, Linda, in 1973; her parents; a grandson, Mark; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington with the Rev. Don Buhrman officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery at Eddyville.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 5 p.m. today, with a wake service at 7 p.m., at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

George R. Pfeiffer

George Raymond Pfeiffer of North Platte, formerly of the Stapleton, Ringgold and Tryon areas, died March 18, 2001, at Great Plains Medical Center in North Platte. He was 82.

He was born Dec. 28, 1918, in McPherson County to Irvin and Flossie Trumbull Pfeiffer. He grew up northwest of Stapleton on his father's ranch.

In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. At that time he returned to the ranch, where he lived until he retired in 1997. In 1999, he moved to Chancellor Place at Aspen Park in North Platte.

Mr. Pfeiffer is survived by two daughters, Connie (Chuck) Frates of Brule and Chirle Tjaden of Ogallala; two sisters, Doris Trumbull of Gering and Loretta Owens of Mooresville, Ind.; five grandchildren; two nieces; and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Noma Belle Munson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Edwin L. Magnuson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8258.

There was cremation. A private family service is planned for a later date.

Those wishing to sign the register book may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.

William Schmidt

William Schmidt, 72, of North Platte died March 18, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Oct. 16, 1928, at Fairview, Okla., to Menno Walter and Elizabeth Boehs Schmidt. He grew up in Oklahoma.

He moved to North Platte shortly before he married Elsie Marie Refior July 17, 1948, at North Platte. They lived at Enid, Okla., for a short time and then returned to North Platte. He worked at Allen Self Service and Time Tool and Equipment Rentals.

Mr. Schmidt was a member of the Berean Fundamental Church and the Alzheimer's Support Group.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Alice May (Ray) Spencer of Hershey; a sister, Helen Jantz of Enid; a brother, Edward (Joan) Schmidt of Tuskahoma, Okla.; six grandchildren, Teresa (Stacey) Foster, Lisa (Steve) Glaubitz, Brenda (Michael) Davis, Renee (Jose`) Urbina, Dawn-Marie (Clint) Breisch and Todd Roberts; 14 great-grandchildren, Christopher, Jesse and Cassidy Breisch, Raelynn, Nathanial, Malinda and Jonathan Foster, Amanda Glaubitz, Michael Ray, Daniel and Jose Davis, Andrew and Nathan Urbina and Shaylin Roberts; a daughter-in-law, Kathy (Mike) Scott of Carlton, Ore.; a son-in-law, Edward Britton of North Platte; two sisters-in-law, Audrey Schmidt of Maryland and Mary Schmidt of Kokomo, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary June Britton; a son, Darrel Leroy; his parents; three sisters, Clara Hudnall, Susie Schmidt and Pauline Witt; and three brothers, Raymond, Alvin and Jacob "Jakie" Schmidt.

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, the American Diabetes Association or the Berean Fundamental Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Berean Fundamental Church with the Rev. Carl M. Goltz officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Odean Colonial Chapel is in charge.

Olive Marie Chapin

LEXINGTON - Olive Marie Chapin, 85, of Minden died March 18, 2001, at the Bethany Care Home in Minden.

She was born June 22, 1915, at Lexington to George Sr. and Olive Ballard Crawford. She attended rural school through the eighth grade at Lexington. After graduation she helped her mother with the care of the younger children until her marriage to Earl R. Chapin of Broken Bow on Sept. 28, 1937. The couple had eight children, four boys and four girls, two of whom died at birth.

The Chapins lived in various communities in Central and Western Nebraska and Colorado. Her last place of residence was Minden.

After her children were grown, she worked in the health care industry for 20 years. She was employed at Bethphage Mission in Axtell for the last 16 of her working years. She and her husband moved to Gering after a personal injury forced her to retire from the work force. They lived there until her husband's death in 1990, and she then returned to their home in Minden.

Mrs. Chapin was admitted to Bethany Care home in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Olive G. Nelson of Elyria and Sherry L. Beaufeaux of San Francisco; four sons, Warren Rea of Melbeta, Errol D. of Bellevue, Frederick H. of Kearney, Mo., and Jon T. of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two brothers, Harold and Gary Crawford, both of Lexington; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two infant daughters, Nikki Lynn and Patricia Ann; her parents; three sisters, Una Stedman, Neva Wells and Beth Parks; and two brothers, George Jr. and Arnold Crawford.

A memorial has been established.

The body was cremated.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Kyron C. BeDunnah officiating. Inurnment will be in the Cozad Cemetery. A dinner will be served at the Harold James Crawford home at 404 W. Elm in Lexington following the service.

Albert C. 'Clint' Hardy

JOHNSON LAKE - Albert C. "Clint" Hardy, 64, of Johnson Lake died March 18, 2001, while visiting a friend in Shreveport, La.

He was born Feb. 6, 1937, the eldest son of Earl R. and Agnes D. Hladky Hardy at Mullen. He grew up in the Sandhills of Nebraska and attended school in Mullen and Chadron. He earned his teaching degree from Chadron State College and taught in a one-room country school south of Whitman.

Mr. Hardy enjoyed working around the ranch country - the horses, rodeos and the cowboy way of life. He worked highway construction and later in life enjoyed trucking over the road, retiring after many years with Consolidated Freightways.

He was president of the Lakeview Acres Lot Association at Johnson Lake.

Survivors include two brothers, Richard Hardy of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Earl Hardy Jr. of Grand Island; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The body was cremated.

A celebration memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Cecil Jacquot

BROKEN BOW - Cecil X. Jacquot of Broken Bow, formerly of rural Merna, died March 19, 2001, at the Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow. He was 87.

He was born Dec. 24, 1913, west of Merna to George and Mary Mohatt Jacquot.

On Oct. 26, 1937, he married Meta Steinmeyer at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Giltner. They lived in the Merna area and later moved to the Jacquot home place where they farmed and ranched.

Mr. Jacquot was a member of St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo.

Survivors include five daughters, Patsy Downey of Merna, Jeanne (Bill) Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, Marita (K.C.) Gottschalk and Mary Coffman, both of Broken Bow, and Kathryn (Michael) Sledge of Omaha; a son, Bill (Jan) of Loveland, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Patti Jacquot of Merna; 29 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; a sister, Bernice (R.J.) Miller of Broken Bow; and a sister-in-law, Lois Morrison of Broken Bow.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 27, 2001; an infant daughter, Mary Elaine; a son, Jerry; his parents; a sister, Geraldine Lacher-Spanel; and two brothers, Harold and Charles Jacquot.

Memorials are suggested to St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church in Anselmo with the Rev. Mark Maresh officiating. Burial will be in the Dale Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a Christian wake service at 6 p.m., at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
