Charles L. Prentice

LEXINGTON - Charles L. Prentice, 71, of Lexington died March 24, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.

He was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Elmwood to Fred and Mae Reeder Prentice. On Sept. 30, 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He was discharged as a corporal on June 25, 1953.

He married Darleen Mingus on May 17, 1953, in Dannebrog. They had eight children.

Mr. Prentice worked in Wolbach for many years until moving to the Broken Bow area. His family then moved to Lexington where he was employed by Nebraska By-Products for many years.

Survivors include five daughters, Dorothy Carter of Overton, Esther (Delmar Jr.) Applegarth of Broken Bow, Connie (Clyde) Applegarth of Cozad, Charlotte Prentice of Dumas, Ark., and Nellie (Gene) Furrow of Gothenburg; 29 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; four sisters, Margret Halouska, Nellie Stevens, Opal Neilson and Wilma Greek; a brother, Kenny Prentice; and a great-grandson.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Larry Viter officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Phyllis June Rauert

Phyllis June Rauert, 75, of North Platte died March 24, 2001, at Linden Court.

She was born Feb. 8, 1926, to Otto and Della Jess in Farwell. She graduated from St. Paul High School and worked at the Grand Island Air Base during World War II.

In 1947, she married Herb Rauert at Belleville, Kan. They had a son, Jack, in 1948.

She and her husband moved to North Platte in 1972 when Union Pacific moved more than 150 families from Grand Island to North Platte.

Mrs. Rauert enjoyed her home, family, music, dancing, cooking and all kinds of sewing and needlework. She was a tournament bridge player for many years and achieved the rank of advanced senior master in the American Contract Bridge League.

She and her husband were members of the Trinity Methodist Church in Grand Island and Union Pacific Oldtimers, Elks Lodge and the American Legion in North Platte.

Surviving her is her husband of 54 years; a son, Jack (Katherine) of Austin, Texas; a granddaughter, Nicole (Chris) Mueller of Louisville, Colo.; a grandson, Michael Rauert of Austin; three sisters, Delois (Ray) Holewinski of Omaha, Birdean (Jack) Wadke of Bossier City, La., and Valera (Jim) Campbell of North Platte; and two brothers, Udell (Joyce) Jess of Grand Island and Gerald (Peggy) Jess of Farwell.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lyle Jess.

In place of flowers, memorials are suggested to the North Platte Alzheimer's Support Group, 1905 West F, North Platte, NE 69101, or Elks Lodge 985, Hwy. 83, North Platte, NE 69101.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Lux of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery south of Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday and before services Thursday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Dorcie E. Wilder

HYANNIS - Dorcie E. Wilder, 85, died March 24, 2001, at the Hemingford Community Care Center.

She was born July 22, 1915, at Numa, Iowa, to George and Minerva Herrald Wilcox.

On June 2, 1934, she married Karl Wilder in Hot Springs, S.D.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Charles) Petersen of Hemingford; two sons, Dennis (Floydene) of Hyannis and James (Rhonda) of Scottsbluff; a niece, Melody (Brad) Gillaspy of Omaha; grandchildren, Lori (Tyler) Glendy and Angela Petersen, all of Hemingford, Jennifer (Adam) Grabowski of Herman, Abraham Wilder of Hastings, Aaron and Mysti Wilder and Amanda Donnelson, all of Scottsbluff, Alicia Wilder of Elkhorn and Lacie and Chelsea Gillaspy, both of Omaha; three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Madison and Mackenzie Jo Glendy, all of Hyannis; and a special friend, Kim Towne of Minden.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three children, Karl, Marilyn and Mary; her parents; a sister; and three brothers.

Memorials may be sent to Community First National Bank, P.O. Box 227, Hyannis, NE 69350, the Sandhills Fire and Rescue or the Calvary Episcopal Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Episcopal Church in Hyannis with the Rev. Christine Mottl officiating. Burial will be in the Hyannis Cemetery.

Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge.

Mabel O. York

COZAD - Mabel York, 96, of Cozad died March 26, 2001, at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad.

She was born May 9, 1904, northwest of Cozad to Ernest and Mary Durland Love. She attended Lucerne Valley District 27 rural school, where she and her future husband were school sweethearts since 1914.

On Jan. 21, 1925, she married Percy York in Julesburg, Colo. They lived on a ranch north of Cozad in Roten Valley for a short time before moving to the York farm northwest of Cozad. The couple purchased the Love family farm in 1947. In 1986, they moved to Cozad.

Mrs. York enjoyed her home and having family and friends stop for coffee and cookies. She and her husband enjoyed traveling from coast to coast and border to border. They celebrated 68 years of marriage before her husband's death in March 1993.

She was a member of the New Hope Church, which her father founded on the Love family farm northwest of Cozad. She was also a member of the 2 Better U Club for many years, a home extension club and the Pioneer Dozen Club. She recorded the history and all of the students who attended Lucerne Valley School.

Survivors include a daughter, UnaMae Lanham, and a son, Carl (Shirley), all of Cozad; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a baby daughter, Lucy Ella; two sisters, Olive Berryman and Edith Cooksley; and a brother, Roy E. Love.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel in Cozad with the Rev. Jim Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Berryman Funeral Home.

Judy Arnholt

OGALLALA - Judith Ann Arnholt of Ogallala, a longtime music teacher, died March 26, 2001, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln. She was 58.

She was born July 12, 1942, at Hays, Kan., to Philip and Anna Hellreigel Young. She attended schools in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado. She graduated from St. Anthony's High School in Sterling, Colo., in 1960.

In 1965, she received a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. That same year, she was hired as the K-12 music teacher at Haigler, where she met her husband-to-be, Gerald Arnholt, who was also teaching at Haigler.

On June 4, 1966, she married Gerald Arnholt at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Julesburg. In 1970, she graduated with a master's degree in music education.

Mrs. Arnholt spent most of her teaching career as an elementary school music teacher in the Ogallala Public Schools. She also served as an adjunct music instructor for Mid-Plains Community College.

While in high school and college, she was in great demand as a pianist and organist. She played for literally hundreds of weddings and social functions. She served as a liturgy advisor on the parish council of St. Luke's Catholic Church. She was president of the Ogallala Regional Arts Council and served as president and board member of the Midlands Opera Association. From 1994 to 1996, she was a member of the Nebraska Arts Frameworks, which set standards for the teaching of the arts in Nebraska.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Desiree Arnholt of Omaha and Melinda Arnholt of Ogallala; her mother, Anna Young of North Platte; a brother, Stephen Young of Lincoln; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her father preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Ogallala school children.

Recitation of the Rosary will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Lukes Catholic Church in Ogallala, with the Rev. John Schlaf as Celebrant.

Mass of the Resurrection will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Lukes Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Thursday to time of the Rosary at Draucker Funeral Home.

Elmer Franke

GRANT - Elmer Franke, 97, a longtime Grant-area farmer, died March 27, 2001, at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.

He was born Dec. 28, 1903, near Herman to Louis and Emelia Weltkamp Franke. He attended grade school in Washington County and two years of high school in Burt County. In 1921, he moved with his family to a farm northeast of Grant.

On Aug. 18, 1926, he married Gladys Ayers in Sterling, Colo. They made their home on the family farm their entire married life. His wife preceded him in death in 1975.

He married Betty Watkins in 1975 and they lived in Ogallala until 1990, when they both moved to Golden Ours. She preceded him in death in 1991.

Mr. Franke had been a longtime member of the Grant United Methodist Church, the Rural Fire District Board and the Grant Co-Op board.

He is survived by a stepson, Dennis (Anita) Watkins and their family of rural Venango, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Grant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Nothstine officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery.

Betty Hagan

ELSIE - Betty Hagan, 67, of Elsie died March 26, 2001, at the Perkins County Community Hospital in Grant.

She was born July 6, 1933, at Syracuse, Kan., to Ralph and Grace Stephenson Callen. She grew up in Tribune, Kan., where she graduated from high school in 1951.

On March 17, 1951, she married Delbert Hagan at Goodland, Kan. They made their home in Tribune, while her husband served in the Korean War. In 1957, they moved to a farm northwest of Madrid.

They also lived in Sutherland and on a farm southwest of Elsie until moving into town in 1996. She worked in the bookkeeping office at the Perkins County Community Hospital for several years.

Mrs. Hagan was a member of the Elsie United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Elsie Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving her is her husband; a daughter, Judy (Gary) Connell of Tryon; a son, Jim (Kathy) of Elsie; four grandchildren, Shelley and Shaun Hagan and Tara and Erin Connell; two stepsisters, Carroll Young and Pat Hapes, and a stepbrother, Don Stephenson, all of Kansas.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Elsie United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bonnie Linton-Hendrick officiating. Burial will be in the Madrid Cemetery.

James M. Hart

JOHNSON LAKE - James M. Hart, 56, of Johnson Lake died March 24, 2001, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

He was born July 18, 1944, at Vinton, Iowa, to George D. and Helen B. Dudek Hart. He grew up in Grand Island.

In 1962, he joined the Army to see the world, but was stationed at Crete the whole time. His career in the restaurant business began at Dreisbach's Steakhouse while he was still in high school.

In 1971, he took over the steakhouse at the Grand Island Saddle Club. In 1991, he opened Hart's Steakhouse in Gothenburg. His food and service made Hart's a popular dining place.

In 1994, he moved his business to Johnson Lake following a fire that destroyed his restaurant in Gothenburg. In 1999, a disabling illness forced his early retirement.

Mr. Hart's interests included fishing, hunting, visiting with friends and being an avid Nebraska football fan. Many people remember a blacked-out Nebraska football game, which was seen on TV at Jim's steakhouse after he hired a crane to put up an antenna more than 100 feet high for reception from Kansas.

Survivors include his brother, Jerry (Yvonne) Hart of Cortez, Colo.; a niece and two nephews, Susan Hart-Davis of Ellensburg, Wash., Michael Hart of Minneapolis and David Hart of Moorhead, Minn.; special friends, Tanner, Misty, Pat, Sylvia, Russ, John and Kathy, Leon and Carolyn and Dick; and many other friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Johnson Lake or Elwood emergency medical services.

The body was cremated. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Don Buhrman officiating.
