Richard H. 'Dick' Henley

Richard Hooper "Dick" Henley of Grand Island, formerly of North Platte, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul. He was 66.

He was born April 14, 1934, to Francis T. and Margaret M. Moylan Henley at Detroit. He grew up in various states, including Michigan, Maryland, Wyoming and Alaska because of his father's career. He moved to North Platte in 1947. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Patrick High School in North Platte.

While a junior in high school, he began working for Nash Finch Wholesale Food Company. He continued to work for them until his retirement in 1999, with the exception of two years in the military.

Mr. Henley served in the U.S. Army in the Medical Corps from 1956 to 1958. He was stationed in Germany. It was during this time that he visited his mother's family in County Galway, Ireland.

He lived in North Platte until the early 1970s, when Nash Finch transferred him to Grand Island. He was a member of the Prairie Lake Boat Club of North Platte and the Sherman Reservoir Association and was an avid water sports enthusiast. He was a member of the American Legion Post 53 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 378, both of Grand Island.

He is survived by his fiancee, JoAnn Urbanski of St. Paul; two brothers, Frank T. Henley of Warner Robins, Ga., and Henry J. Henley of Silver Spring, Md.; four nieces; two nephews; and two great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial has been established to the St. Paul emergency medical technicians.

A Christian Wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte with the Rev. R.L. Piontkowski as Celebrant. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Howard O. Panzer

Howard O. Panzer of Kearney, formerly of North Platte, died March 27, 2001, at St. John's Center in Kearney, where he had been a resident since September 1995. He was 87.

He was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Cowles to William and Marguerite Benker Panzer. The family moved to the North Platte area and he attended North Platte High School.

On Sept. 20, 1936, he married Thelma M. Thompson in North Platte. They moved to McCook in 1937, where they lived and he was a mail clerk for the McCook Public School system. He retired in 1979 and they moved to Kearney in 1984.

Mr. Panzer is survived by his wife; two daughters, Judy Baltzell of Kearney and Janet Reiners of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wilbur Panzer of North Platte.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers.

Memorials are planned to the family or to St. John's Center.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the North Platte Cemetery with the Rev. Carl Goltz officiating.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney.

Kathryn R. Wallace

COZAD - Kathryn Wallace, 83, of Cozad died March 27, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

She was born Dec. 24, 1917, at Benedict to John and Elizabeth George Volzke. She graduated from Beaver Crossing High School.

On Oct. 12, 1940, she married George Wallace at Aurora. The couple lived in the Custer County area before moving to Cozad in 1956.

Mrs. Wallace was an active member of Parkview United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge and BPO DOES.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Georgina (Larry) Lehmann of Minden; a son, John (Janet) of Grand Island; two sisters, Evelyn (Harold) Hunkins of Ansley and Vera Mae (Les) Horn of McCook; five grandchildren, Craig, Curt and Cathy Wallace, Lynn Lehmann and Melissa Wheelock; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial has been established to Parkview United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Jim Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Thursday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Ervin J. Thinnes

OVERTON - Ervin J. Thinnes of Kearney, formerly of Overton, died March 27, 2001, at St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney. He was 76.

He was born Feb. 28, 1925, at Overton to Nick Thomas and Elizabeth Mary Wengler Thinnes. He attended school near Overton.

At the age of 2, he was stricken with polio. He was unable to work throughout his life but he took great pride in keeping his yard and wanted his grass as green as it could be.

Mr. Thinnes had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed sharing that humor with his large extended family of brothers, sisters and many nieces and nephews. He had a gift for making rosaries by hand.

Survivors include five sisters, Carrie Hasty of Elwood, Frances (Chester) Adams of Lexington, Elizabeth Earl of Elm Creek, Josephine McDonald of Overton and Eileen Lauby of Lexington; a brother, LaVerne Thinnes of San Diego; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Ann and Susie Gruntorad, Mary Brestel, Kathryn Walker and Leona Saulsbury; and three brothers, Nick, Matt and Bill.

Memorials are suggested to the Overton fire and rescue units.

The body was cremated. A memorial mass will be at 10 a.m.

Saturday at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Overton with the Revs. Neal Nollette and Mike McDonald officiating.

Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge.

Samuel D. 'Bus' Barner

HERSHEY - Samuel D. "Bus" Barner, 91, of Hershey died March 29, 2001, at his home.

He was born Jan. 24, 1910, at Ringgold to James and Pearl Barner. From 1916 to 1951, he lived in Arthur where he had a ranch and an automobile garage.

He was a pilot instructor for the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Dec. 22, 1935, he married Helen L. Curtiss at Julesburg, Colo. She preceded him in death on July 24, 1993.

In 1955, he moved to Thermopolis, Wyo., where he was in the motel business. He moved to Hershey in 1977.

Mr. Barner is survived by a son, James of New Paltz, N.Y.; a sister, Verna (Nobel) Morrell of Florida; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Barner of England.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Hershey Senior Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Monday at the Arthur Baptist Church in Arthur with the Rev. Glendon Epp officiating. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today and Sunday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Phyllis J. Fuller

LEXINGTON - Phyllis J. Fuller, 84, of Lexington died March 29, 2001, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

She was born Oct. 30, 1916, at Lexington to Samuel I. and Mary Ethel Harrow Nisley.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with the Rev. Floyd H. Starr officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Iris L. Mannel

BROKEN BOW - Iris L. Mannel, 87, of Broken Bow died March 29, 2001, at the Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.

She was born Oct. 1, 1913, at Milburn to Mike and Edna Leap Loughran. She graduated from Milburn High School.

On May 7, 1934, she was married to Emil T. "Mac" Mannel at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo. They farmed for 41 years on the Mannel home place near Victoria Springs east of Anselmo. In 1974, they retired from farming and moved to Broken Bow.

Mrs. Mannel worked at Broken Bow Floral for a short time. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Broken Bow.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharron (Mike) Shea of Pekin, Ill., and Deloris (Bill) Foster of Gibbon; a son, Bill (Laura) of Anselmo; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Tom (Catherine) Loughran of Anselmo.

She was preceded in death by her husband on April 15, 1995; her parents; and two sisters, Rose Pohlreich and Ruth Smith.

Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Alzheimer's Association.

A Christian wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Todd Philipsen officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Ellen M. Schutz

EUSTIS - Ellen Schutz, 85, of Eustis died March 29, 2001, at the Elwood Care Home.

She was born Aug. 4, 1915, near Eustis to August and Wilhemina Von Loh Koch. She attended Highland District 2 rural school and graduated from Eustis High School in 1933. She attended Kearney State Teachers College and then taught rural school in Frontier County.

On Dec. 30, 1937, she married Walter Schutz. The couple made their home on a farm south of Eustis. Her husband preceded her in death in 1979. She continued living on the farm until 1999 when she moved to the Elwood Care Home.

Mrs. Schutz was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church, later transferring to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Elwood.

Surviving her are two daughters, Glady Zwink of Bellevue, Wash., and Cynthia (Wayne) Hilker of Arapahoe; a son, Victor (Janet) of Elwood; a sister, Emma Jurjens of Eustis; three brothers, Herb (Rosemary) Koch and Harold (Marcella) Koch, both of Eustis, and Clarence (Ilene) Koch of Conway, Mo.; four grandchildren, Sonjia (Mike) Houser, Vern (Amy) Schutz and Jeremy and Jesse Johannsen; and two great-grandsons, Taylor Kenner and Tyler Houser.

Memorials may be made to the church or the Elwood Care Center.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood. Burial will be in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood.

Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge.
