Jane L. Drummy
Jane L. Drummy of North Platte died April 18, 2001, at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was 80.
She was born Dec. 24, 1920, at Omaha to William A. and Alice C. Nelson Steinhauser. She graduated from Omaha Technical High School in 1938.
On Sept. 25, 1942, she married Samuel S. Drummy at Papillion.
They moved to North Platte in 1947. She was employed by Union Pacific Railroad as a clerk for many years until her retirement in 1983.
Mrs. Drummy was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and St. Patrick's Altar Society. She was also a charter member of the North Platte Eagles Auxiliary and a member of the Bunco Belles and the Union Pacific Old Timers.
She enjoyed Nebraska football, concerts, plays, bowling, the Lunch Bunch, traveling and playing the piano. She had an intense curiosity about life and a mischievous sense of humor.
Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Kathy (Craig) Matheny of Long Beach, Calif., Shirley Hawkins (Bill) Smith of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Tad (Richard) Lisella of Nashville, Tenn., Laurie Kinsel of Omaha and Pat Neff of Kearney; two sons, Sam (Kris Sheets) of Los Angeles and Bill of Denver; a sister, Lois (Russ) Staats of Roanoke, Texas; six granddaughters, Karen Miller, Kim Manning, Janie and Kazzie Zerface, Leigh Uhlik and Clancy Cox; seven grandsons, Kent and Bret Matheny, Jay and John Hawkins, Cris Zerface and P.D. and Casey Neff; 14 great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bonnee Meyerpeter; and a son-in-law, Jerry Neff.
Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Fund.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Richard Piontkowski as celebrant. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Dorothy Hicken
GOTHENBURG - Dorothy Hicken, 91, of Gothenburg died April 19, 2001, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Long Term.
She was born July 13, 1909, at Gothenburg to Henry and Nanka Frerichs Lauer. She graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1926. She worked for a number of years at the Gothenburg Hospital as a cook.
On April 24, 1935, she married Frank Hicken at Christ Lutheran Church in Gothenburg.
She was a member of the American Lutheran Church. She enjoyed bowling.
Mrs. Hicken is survived by her husband; a daughter, Betty Hubbert of Gothenburg; three sons, Glenn (Jayne) of Kearney, Ralph (Haruko) of Omaha and Robert (Barb) of Gothenburg; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and five brothers.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg with the Revs. Steve Berke and Wendy Ruetten officiating. Burial will be in the American Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.
Albert Howell
ANSLEY - Albert Vest Howell of Ansley died April 23, 2001, at his home. He was 87.
He was born Nov. 9, 1913, in Mason City to Albert Eugene and Josephine Rose Jelinek Howell.
On June 16, 1952, he married Aletha May Mott Holland at Lexington.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Dorothy Holland (Dan) Lopu of Lincoln, Linda (Daniel) Bratton and Wiona Rose Koller , all of Ansley; a son, Harold Eugene "Gene" of Broken Bow; five sisters-in-law, Una Bull of Caldwell, Idaho, Dorothy and Vivian Mott, both of Ansley and Clysta and Molly Mott, both of Grand Island; three brothers-in-law, Chet Boyer of Kearney and Harold and Harry Mott , both of Ansley; 27 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Howell was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Richard Nollett; a daughter-in-law, Carol Howell; a son-in-law, Richard Koller; his parents; five sisters, Lola, Jessie and Ethel Howell, Mae Brisban and Margaret Boyer; four sisters-in-law, Leona Bull, Faye and Pearl Howell and Clemmie Mott; four brothers, John and Lafayette Bull and James and Henry Howell; and three brothers-in-law, Albert Brisban, Vernon and Joe Mott.
Memorials are suggested to the Broken Bow Hospice.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mel Shepherd officiating. Burial will be in the Mason City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Ruth E. Smith
ELWOOD - Ruth E. Smith, 82, of Elwood died April 19, 2001, at Elwood.
She was born Oct. 8, 1918, near Hoxie, Kan., to John and Helen Baumann Baier. She was raised on a farm north of Hoxie and attended school including Immanuel Lutheran Christian Day School.
On Sept. 14, 1935, she married Jim Smith and they lived on farms at Hoxie and Dresden, Kan. They later lived in several communities in Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska where she worked with her husband in the grain elevator business. In 1970, they moved to Johnson Lake. They have lived in Elwood for the past 3½ years.
She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at Elwood.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband; two daughters, Roberta (Les) Olmstead of Loveland, Colo., and Victoria (Randall) Vinzant of Elwood; a brother, John (Norma) Baier of Prescott, Ariz.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Baier; and two brothers, Allen and William.
A memorial has been established.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood with the Rev. Richard Boring officiating. Burial will be in the Elwood Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad is in charge.
Jennie Mathilda Green
Jennie Mathilda Green, 85, died April 20, 2001, at her home in North Platte.
She was born March 14, 1916, at Winnetoon to John and Inez Lucinda Lyon Neyens. She grew up on the family farm and attended school at St. Ludger's Academy in Creighton. She graduated in 1933.
She worked on the family farm until 1939. She then worked for Largen Theater in Creighton. After moving to O'Neill, she worked for M&M Bakery and Judge Harrington.
On June 16, 1941, she married Lyle Mervin Green at St. Ludger's Catholic Church in Creighton. The couple lived in O'Neill. During World War II, they lived in Army camps at Cheyenne, Wyo., Junction City and Salina, Kan., and Olympia, Wash., until her husband went overseas. She then returned to O'Neill.
In 1954, they bought and operated the Mitchell Bakery in Mitchell until 1976, when they moved to North Platte and bought and operated the Nebraskan Liquor Store until 1979 with Harvey and Delores Sawyer.
Mrs. Green was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Ladies of St. Patrick's, Tuesday Bible Study Group, Rosary Group, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and several bridge groups. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and playing bridge.
Survivors include two daughters, Lou Etta McHenry of Gering and Marian (Virgil) Bourek of Farley, Iowa; two sons, Richard L. (Carol) of North Platte and Donald J. (Nancy) of Lincoln; 13 grandchildren; a stepgrand-daughter; two great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Ula Mae McManigal of Creighton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Sarah Muller and Elizabeth Meyer; four brothers, John Elmer "Pete," Charles and Joseph Neyens and an infant brother; and a great-granddaughter, Savina Sarah DeLosSantos.
Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. as celebrant. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel and prior to services Monday at the church.
Rudolf P. 'Rudy' Dubs
ASHBY - Rudolf P. "Rudy" Dubs, 85, of Ashby died April 22, 2001, at the Box Butte Hospital in Alliance.
He was born Feb. 10, 1916, south of Ashby to Ludwig and Rosa Vollenweider Dubs. He attended school at District 9 through the eighth grade. He helped his father with the ranch until he joined the U.S. Army in 1942 during World War II. He later returned to the family ranch and the Sandhills.
On Dec. 5, 1949, he married Francis I. Burgess in Ashby.
Mr. Dubs was active in community affairs, serving on the local school board, the co-op board, the Natural Resources District and served one term as County Commissioner. He was also active in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Rose (Bob) Wehtje and Nancy (Dennis) Mazanec, all of Hemingford and Kathy (Tim) Doty of Loveland, Colo.; three sons, Paul (Alice) of Ashby, Sid of Alliance and Ted (Mary Jo) of Powell, Tenn.; a sister, Helen (Neil) Warden of Denver; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and five brothers.
Memorials are suggested to the Grant County Ambulance or the donor's choice.
Services will be at 2 p.m. MST today at the United Church of Christ in Hyannis with the Revs. Roger Larson and Ted Dubs officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Hyannis Cemetery.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. to service time today at the church.
Mullen Funeral Home is in charge.
Alvin Holmes
ARCADIA - Alvin Holmes of Arcadia died April 22, 2001, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord. He was 87.
He was born Feb. 3, 1919, near Arcadia to Benjamin Franklin and May Etta Teeter Holmes. He attended rural school near Arcadia.
After his schooling, he farmed with his parents on the family farm northeast of Arcadia. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during World War II in England. After his discharge, he returned to the family farm and farmed with his brothers.
Mr. Holmes is survived by a sister, Velma Jackson of Ord; a sister-in-law, Julie Holmes of Ord; a brother, Dale Holmes of Arcadia; nieces; and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Fern Gregg; and two brothers, Ivan and Earl Holmes.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Arcadia with the Rev. Doug Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
