Leonard Farrell

John Leonard Farrell, 78, of North Platte died April 24, 2001, at his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1923, to Frank and Genevieve McAdams Farrell at McCook. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1940. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in China as a master sergeant and was a communications specialist with the Flying Tigers. He was decorated for bravery by Chiang Kai-shek.

After the war, he completed his education at Creighton University and went on to get a degree in mortuary science from the Cincinnati School of Embalming. He was a mortician and later a life insurance salesman for the Knights of Columbus. He donated many hours of service to the community in a variety of public and private ways.

Mr. Farrell was an active member of St. Patrick's Parish and later Holy Spirit Parish. He was the Veterans Service Officer for the American Red Cross, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He served on the school boards of both St. Patrick's Junior-Senior High School and Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors with terms as president on both.

He served on the Nebraska Community College Association Board of Directors. He was active in the Knights of Columbus since 1946, serving as a past grand knight and past faithful navigator and as a state district deputy. Through his work with the Knights, he raised money for St. Patrick's School and Church. He served as pack leader for Cub Scout Pack 292 for 10 years. He was active in the Lion's Club and assisted with the Nebraskaland Days parade for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, RoseAnn Evans Farrell of North Platte; three daughters, Diane (Tom) Lyngdal of Plymouth, Minn., Mary Pat (Blane) Haywood of Dalton, Ga., and Peggy (Craig) Hinrichs of Hastings; three sons, Michael of Minneapolis, Dennis of Kansas City, Mo., and Thomas (Peggy) of Nebraska City; 11 grandchildren, Meghan, Zachary and Rachel Farrell of Minneapolis, Maureen and Judson Farrell of Nebraska City, Erik, Connor and Kelsey Lyngdal of Plymouth and Meredith, Bridget and Mary Margaret Haywood of Dalton; three brothers, Warren (Marian) Farrell of McCook, Jim (Alice) Farrell of San Diego and Bernard (Wilma) Farrell of Phoenix; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph John, and his parents.

A memorial has been established to the North Platte Catholic Schools or to Great Plains Hospice.

Christian Wake Services will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Robert T. 'Bob' Finney

MULLEN - Robert T. "Bob" Finney, 88, of Mullen died April 23, 2001, at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Mullen.

He was born Dec. 26, 1912, at McCool Junction to James H. and Byrd Thorne Finney. He grew up in the Sandhills and graduated from Seneca High School. He attended Creighton University in Omaha. When World War II broke out, he joined the U.S. Navy and attended Texas A&M University.

After the war, he returned home and married Billie Gaston on March 15, 1947, in the Catholic Church at Seneca.

Mr. Finney was a lifelong Sandhills rancher. He belonged to the Nebraska Cattleman Association and was a member of the Mullen American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving him is his wife; a daughter, Helen (Bill) Neumeyer of Mullen; three sons, Dan (Jeanne) of Gordon, Russ (Pat) of Tryon and Doug (Rose) of Mullen; a brother, Hubert (Hazelle) of Seneca; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.

Memorials may be made to the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home or to the donor's choice.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. MDT today at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Jim Warner officiating. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery in Mullen with military honors by the American Legion Post 109 and VFW Post 5541 of Mullen.

Mullen Funeral Home is in charge.

Pencieetta 'Penny' Gummere

Pencieetta "Penny" Gummere, 81, of North Platte died April 24, 2001, at her home.

She was born Dec. 15, 1919, to John L. and Mamie I. Dotson Case in North Platte. She graduated from Sutherland High School in 1936 and attended Chillicothe (Mo.) Business College and worked for many years as a secretary.

In 1942, she married Bernard S. Gummere Jr. They resided in the Sutherland area, where her husband farmed and was associated with several businesses in Sutherland.

Mrs. Gummere was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, BPO DOES Drove 109, Signet Chapter 55 Order of Eastern Star, American Association of Retired Persons, Chapter EB of PEO, past president of the Toastmistresses, and at the time of her death she was the mission chairwoman for Circle 4 at the First Presbyterian Church in North Platte.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Ann (Steve) Cochran of Lewellen and Linda Kay (Jerry) Schurr of Farnam; a sister, Thelma Trego of North Platte; five grandchildren, Jason B. and Samantha M. Cochran and Jerud G., Paige R. and Ty Jacob Schurr; and two great-grandchildren, Chase Lenz-Schurr and Presley Wendelin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a sister, Gladys F. Adams.

Memorials may be made to the church or to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Sutherland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Hawley officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery at Sutherland.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Sumner Middleton

GOTHENBURG - Sumner Middleton of Brady died April 24, 2001. He was 72.

He was born May 1, 1928, to Archie Donaldson and Mary Elizabeth Paine Middleton south of Gothenburg. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1945. He served two years in the Army and was stationed in Japan part of that time.

On Sept. 13, 1952, he married Peggy Hitchcock in Ainsworth. She preceded him in death in 1959. He married Beverly Haugen June 16, 1973, at North St. Paul, Minn.

Mr. Middleton farmed for many years south of Gothenburg. He also was a carpenter for nearly 30 years. He and his wife, Beverly, lived in the Jeffrey Lake home they built 26 years ago.

He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and celebrated 30 years of sobriety this past January.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Brady.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Brady; three daughters, Cathleen (Chuck) Russo of Phoenix, Sandy (Tom) Burnett of Santa La Rosa Beach, Fla., and Joy Kuhlman of Brady; four sons, David (Deb) Middleton of Kearney, Stephen (Katherine) Middleton of Gothenburg, Bryan (Tracy) Haugen of Blaine, Minn., and Randy (Karen) Haugen of Islamorada, Fla.; two sisters, Muriel (Bill) Carriker of Port Angeles, Wash., and Mary Middleton of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Archie (Donna) Middleton of Millsboro, Del.; 15 grandchildren, Ellie, Ben, Sam, Mary and Willis Middleton, Bob and Brenda Bailey, Tara, Danielle, Matthew, Josh and Alysha Haugen, Nick and Jake Sitorius and Sonie Kuhlman; and four great-grandchildren, Hannah and Lauren Bailey, Dakota Haugen and Aspen Sitorius.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Francis; and two grandsons, Marshall and Valen Middleton.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Brady.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. Bill Bicket officiating. Burial will be in the Peckham Cemetery south of Gothenburg with military honors by the Gothenburg Firing Squad.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.

Waldo C. Parsons

Waldo C. Parsons of North Platte, a former Sioux County resident, died April 20, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. He was 88.

He was born June 13, 1912, in Sioux County to Con and Susie Parsons. He grew up on a ranch and was a lifetime rancher in Wyoming, Montana and Nebraska until his retirement in 1972.

On Jan. 29, 1954, he married Lorraine Hamm. They lived on several ranches before moving to Buleton, Calif., after his retirement in 1972. They later relocated to Sun City, Calif.

Mr. Parsons is survived by a daughter, Betty Berry of Palm Desert, Calif.; four grandchildren, Ed Corley of Tacoma, Wash., Randy (Michelle) Corley of North Platte, Jim Layng of Rapid City, S.D., and Kelly Chappell of Palm Desert; a sister, Susie Mae (Ed) Ambler of Riverton, Wyo.; a sister-in-law, Helen Parsons of Sun Lake, Ariz.; a niece, Sue Andrikopoulos of Billings, Mont.; a nephew, Vince Atencio of Englewood, Colo.; a cousin, Cinthia Kaan of Harrison; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives in the Sioux County and central Wyoming areas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and two brothers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. May 25, 2001, in the Harrison Cemetery.

James Ravenscroft

VALENTINE - James Ravenscroft, 79, of Valentine died April 22, 2001, in Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie of Valentine; a daughter, Sally Monroe of Valentine; two sons, Jack and Robert, both of Valentine, and Steve of Hyannis; two sisters, Jean McGaughey and Ruth Holm of North Platte; and three brothers, Myron of Coleridge, Donald of West Virginia and Calvin of Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the Cherry County Hospital Dialysis Fund in Valentine.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church in Valentine. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

William 'Will' Barry

SUTHERLAND - William "Will" Barry, 94, of Sutherland died April 25, 2001, at Integrated Health Services in Sutherland.

He was born Nov. 15, 1906, to David and Maggie Fischer Barry at Sprague. He moved with his parents to a farm south of Sutherland when he was 10 years old.

On Dec. 23, 1931, he married Margaret Nelson and the couple lived on a farm south of Sutherland for 69 years. He farmed in the Paxton/Sutherland area his entire life until moving into the Sutherland Care Center.

Mr. Barry enjoyed old-time music and playing horseshoes and pool. He was an avid baseball fan.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Catherine (Rex) Bridgman of Ord and Shirley (Bob) Lingbloom of North Platte; four grandchildren, Lexanne Bridgman of Rapid City, S.D., Tom (Trudy) Lingbloom of Minneapolis, Minn., Jim (Kim) Lingbloom of Julesburg, Colo., and Elaine (John) Steele of Phoenix; five great-grandchildren, Tony, Jill, Shelby, Tish and Shayne; and special friends, Gerald and Jan Spurgin of Sutherland.

He was preceded in death by a son, Edward; his parents; and two brothers, Clarence and Leroy.

Memorials are suggested to the Integrated Health Systems of Sutherland or to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with Dale Fisher officiating. Burial will be in the Paxton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Wayne A. Carlson

GOTHENBURG - Wayne A. Carlson, 53, of Gothenburg, formerly of Omaha, died April 26, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born July 29, 1947, at Omaha to Thure Clinton and Elaine Anna Plummer Carlson. He lived in Omaha until February 1999, when he moved to Gothenburg.

He enjoyed fishing and watching the New York Yankees.

Mr. Carlson is survived by two sons, Michael and Les, both of Omaha; a granddaughter, Shaelyn Carlson of Omaha; his father, Clint Carlson of Gothenburg; three sisters, Betty (Ron) Kindschuh of West Point, Patricia (Richard) Zarek and Cheri (Brian) Bullock , all of Gothenburg; and a brother, Les (Kathy) Carlson of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1974.

The body was cremated. Private family memorial services will be Saturday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Rev. Wendy Ruetten officiating. The ashes will be scattered at a later date.

Chuck Lovenburg

GRANT - Chuck Lovenburg, 93, of Grant, former longtime Lewellen resident, died April 25, 2001, at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.

He was born April 3, 1908, at Madrid to Frank and Lucy Sibil Lovenburg. He grew up in the Madrid area where he attended school.

On April 30, 1931, he married Bernice Kelso. They lived in Oregon for a brief period before returning to the Lewellen area where he spent the majority of his life. He moved to Grant in the summer of 1999 and lived with his granddaughter until January 2001, when he moved to the nursing home.

Mr. Lovenburg is survived by his wife; a granddaughter, Jeanna Hixon of Grant; a grandson, Matt (Heidi) Hixon of Ogallala; and a great-grandson, Hayden.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandie Deaver, in December 1998; three sisters; and three brothers.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant with John Long officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery.
