Joyce M. Metzger

COZAD - Joyce Metzger, 67, of Cozad died April 25, 2001.

She was born May 14, 1933, at Milbank, S.D., to Lynn and Doris Sauter Hoyt. She attended Cozad schools.

In 1950, she married Daniel Metzger. They lived in several Nebraska communities before moving to Cozad in 1964. She worked at the former Dixie Inn and at F and S Sausage for several years.

She was a member of the Cozad Christian Church and an extension club. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and also enjoyed playing bingo.

Mrs. Metzger is survived by three daughters, Patricia (John) Dorsey, Laurie Brunick and Melissa (Greg) Hartman, all of Cozad; six sons, Jim (Jeanne), Daniel J. (Debra) and Mark, all of Cozad, Randy of Gothenburg, Kurt (Hannah) of Lexington, and Kevin of Long Beach, Calif.; her mother of Lexington; two sisters, Eileen (Frank) Zlatkovskyof Lexington and Barbara (George) Golden of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Patrick (JoAnn) Hoyt of Pender; 24 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Kenny Willets of Cozad.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976; a daughter, Donna Jean; two granddaughters, Raquel and Tara Metzger; a grandson, Chris Metzger; her father; her stepfather, Burdette Batie; and an infant brother.

Memorials are suggested to any diabetes organization or the American Heart Association.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cozad Christian Church with Jim Henry officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

William J. Wildman

LEWELLEN - William J. Wildman, 58, of Lewellen-Lake McConaughy area died April 18, 2001, at his home.

He was born Feb. 9, 1943, at Bottineau, N.D., to Donald and Evelyn Powers Wildman. He received his education at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, graduating with a master's degree in math. He later became a certified public accountant.

He married Elaine Omann in Minnesota. He joined the U.S. Army in January 1962 and was discharged in December 1964. He was a consultant with professional service firms and later was self-employed as a medical practice manager.

Mr. Wildman is survived by two daughters, Lisa Marie and Evelyn Katherine Wildman, both of Okinawa; a granddaughter, Heather Archuleta of Denver; two sisters, Dawn Erickson of Princeton, Minn., and Theresa Hanna of Rapid City, S.D.; and two brothers, Thomas Wildman of Shepherd, Mich., and Dwight Wildman of Milaca, Minn.

His parents preceded him in death.

The body was cremated.

Services will be at 1 p.m. MST Saturday at Draucker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Phil Ewert of the First Congregational, United Church of Christ officiating.

Draucker Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge.

Eddie E. Hemenway

Eddie Edward Hemenway, 89, formerly of the North Platte area, died April 27, 2001, at the Cozad Community Hospital.

He was born Jan. 1, 1912, to Frank B. and Mary Gibbs Hemenway at Spalding. He grew up in the Spalding area.

On Dec. 30, 1935, he married LeEtta Wolf. She preceded him in death Feb. 11, 1988. The couple lived at the Pawnee Springs Ranch where he worked for 28 years. They then moved to a ranch southwest of North Platte where he lived for 12 years.

They moved to the Stafford Ranch at Paxton and stayed for 17 years. He enjoyed taking care of his cattle and fixing fences.

Survivors include a daughter, Velma (Del) Craig of Cozad; two sons, Clifford (Barbara) of Sumner and Larry (Carol) of Sutherland; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Faling; a great-grandson, Austin Hemenway; his parents; four sisters, Eva and Nellie Alexander and Minnie and Mable Hemmenway; and a brother, Ben.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Jim Henry officiating. Burial will be in the Plainview Cemetery south of Maxwell.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Sunday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Richard 'Rich' Houghtelling

Richard "Rich" Houghtelling of North Platte died April 26, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was 50.

He was born June 27, 1950, at McCook to Milton James Sr. and Leona Williams Houghtelling. grew up in McCook and attended McCook High School. He was a Golden Glove boxer in his early years. He later attended Northwest Kansas Voc-Tech in Goodland, Kan.

He moved to Kearney before entering the U.S. Army in 1969-1970 and was a decorated Vietnam veteran receiving numerous medals including the Purple Heart. After his discharge, he moved to Atwood, Kan., and later to Denver, then onto North Platte.

Mr. Houghtelling is survived by his mother; two daughters, Krystal Baney of Hastings and Heather (Paul) Glasco of Moses Lake, Wash.; a son, Bill (Michele) Sis of McCook; two sisters, Carrie (Wendall) Klock of North Platte and Diane (Ron) Wittman of Littleton, Colo.; and two brothers, Milton (Sally) Houghtelling Jr. of Leominster, Mass., and Kenneth Eugene (Soni) Houghtelling of Holyoke, Colo.; nieces; nephews; aunts; and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Gilbert; and his grandparents.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Perry Edwards, chaplain of Great Plains Regional Medical Center, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Donna J. Johnston

DUNNING - Donna Jean Johnston, 66, of Dunning died April 25, 2001, at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hasting.

She was born Feb.19, 1935, at Milburn to Howard Lester and Jean Mary Gilligan Turner. She attended grade school at Milburn and graduated from St. Agnes Academy in Alliance in 1952. She continued her education at Kearney State College and earned a teaching certificate.

In June 1958, she married Robert Johnston at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo. They lived on ranches in Blaine County before moving to Dunning. They worked together to acquire and raise their own cattle. She worked in the summer at the National Forest at Halsey for almost 30 years.

Mrs. Johnston was a member of St. Anselm's Catholic Church. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed her flowers. She also liked country music, football and rodeos. The last years of her life she was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

Survivors include her husband; a brother, Howard C. "Sonny" (Lois) Turner of Arnold; a nephew, Jack Turner of Arnold; many other relatives and a friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Christian Wake service and rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo with the Rev. Mark Maresh officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Doris M. Loose

LEXINGTON - Doris M. Loose of Lexington died April 25, 2001, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. She was 75.

She was born July 11, 1925, at McCook to Walter and Gladys Frease Reynolds. She grew up in McCook where she worked for Western Union while she was in school. Her family moved to Gothenburg where she graduated from high school in 1943.

On Jan. 5, 1947, she married Larry Loose at Oberlin, Kan. They lived in several towns before settling in Lexington in the early 1950's. They purchased the Conoco Station in Lexington and she handled the book work and helped with the business.

Mrs. Loose enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing board games and marbles, and attended the Nebraska Cornhusker football games. She was an avid fan of all sports. She was a member of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, LeAnn (Don) Easley of Jackson, Miss, and Robin (Mike) McCurley of Los Lunas, N.M.; a son, Vic (Nancy) of Lexington; a sister, Peggy Reynolds Gleason of Omaha; a brother, Jim (Barb) Reynolds of Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Nathan (Stacey) Loose of Lincoln, Cale and Gage Loose of Lexington, Adrian and Dawn Ellen Easley, both of Jackson, Miss., and Dustin and Adam McCurley of Los Lunas, N.M.; and two great-grandchildren, Holly and Corey Easley.

Her parents and grandparents preceded her in death.

Memorials are suggested to the Elwood Rescue Unit or the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Tom Maloney officiating. Burial in be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Ardis Fuller Powell

GRANT - Ardis Fuller Powell, 84, of Grant died April 25, 2001, at her home.

She was born Aug. 8, 1916, at Wallace to Conrad and Myrtle Heath Kreuger. She attended rural school in Wallace and later attended the Curtis School of Agriculture where she received her elementary teaching degree.

On May 25, 1939, she married Floyd Fuller in North Platte. They lived on a farm north of Grainton until 1951, when they moved to their farm southeast of Grant. During this time, she attended McCook Junior College, Chadron State College and Kearney State Teachers College where she graduated and received her special education endorsement. Her husband died in 1974, and she moved to Grant in 1976. She later married Bill Powell and lived in Stratton until she moved back to Grant in 1989.

She was an active member of the Grant United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also involved in the Grant Senior Center and American Association of Retired Persons.

She is survived by two daughters, Sue Fuller and Julie Blea of California; a son, Rod (Donna) of Enders; a brother, Leonard Kreuger of Indiana; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Powell was also preceded in death by a grandson, Bryan; and two sisters, Ollie and Wilda.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Grant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Nothstine officiating. Burial will be in the Wallace Cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant is in charge.

Virgil J. Schulz

GOTHENBURG - Virgil J. Schulz, 72, of Gothenburg died April 27, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born April 25, 1929, at Garland to Adolph Reinhold and Elsie Margaret Ficken Schulz. He was an outstanding athlete in high school and a member of the 1946 Nebraska High School Championship team from Gothenburg. He attended school in Garland and Farnam, graduating from Gothenburg High School in 1947.

On Oct. 29, 1950, he married Dolores Elaine France at Gothenburg. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from May 1951 to April 1953. He farmed north of Willow Island for 18 years and was a transport driver for Farmland Co-op from l970 until his retirement in 1994.

He was an active member of the American Lutheran Church at Gothenburg, serving as chairman of the church council and delivering bulletins to church members.

Mr. Schultz is survived by his wife; a daughter, Jody (Todd) Stull of Minot, N.D.; two sons, Michael (Kathryn) of Daphne, Ala., and Ivan of Lincoln; three sisters, Vera Wolf of Gothenburg, Myrna (Milford) Bratten of Loveland, Colo., and Elaine (John) Brown of Atlanta, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Maxine Schulz of Gothenburg; a brother, Milton (Jewel) Schulz of Gothenburg; five grandchildren, Ryan, Mindy and Lindsey Schulz and Zachary and Zane Stull; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Norbert; and a brother-in-law, Lewis Wolf.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church, the American Cancer Society or the Gothenburg Senior Center.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. Steve Berke officiating. Burial will be in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with military honors by the Gothenburg Firing Squad.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.
