Sylvia D. Schaffert

CURTIS - Sylvia D. Schaffert, 88, of Curtis died April 3, 2001, at the McCook Community Hospital.

She was born Jan. 29, 1913, at Curtis to Willard and Mary Ellen Osterhoudt Poteet. She graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis in l931. She taught country school in the Curtis area and also in Hayes County for seven years.

On June 13, 1937, she married Edwin Schaffert near White. He preceded her in death April 14, 1982. They farmed south of Curtis in the Zion Hill Community for about six years. They moved to the farm seven miles southeast of Curtis in 1949, where she has resided ever since. She is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Curtis.

Mrs. Schaffert is survived by two daughters, Mary Schaffert and Nancy, both of Curtis; a sister, Lois Whiting of Eager, Ariz.; two brothers, Ben (Kay) Poteet of Camarillo, Calif., and Robert (Leora) Pursel of Cerritos, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Shoshana (Kent) Cohagan of Lincoln.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Wilma Kimmons.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Curtis with the Rev. Shirley Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Curtis Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Blase-Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.

William Walter Thomas

GRANBURY, Texas - William Walter Thomas, 66, of Granbury, Texas, father of Anthony "Tony" Thomas of North Platte, died April 1, 2001, at the Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was born Feb. 23, 1935, in Odessa.

On Sept. 23, 1983, he married Patsy Griffene Murphy in Granbury.

He was in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Granbury.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife; a daughter, Beth Ellen Fisher of Maxwell; a stepdaughter, Kathy Whisenant of Stephenville, Texas; two sons, Timothy of Dallas and Anthony "Tony" of North Platte; two stepsons, Gary and Rickie Benningfield, both of Granbury; a sister, Geri Johnson; and 14 grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Martin's Funeral Home Chapel in Granbury with the Rev. Roy Falls officiating.

Martin's Funeral Home of Granbury is in charge.

JoLoy D. Brown

TILDEN - JoLoy D. Brown of Tilden, niece of Lillian (Wes) Eberhart of North Platte, died April 3, 2001, at the Tilden Community Hospital. She was 60.

She was born June 2, 1940, to Evert B. and Lena L. Porter Dannatt of Ainsworth. She graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1957. She attended Kearney State Teachers College for two years and then taught kindergarten at Jefferson Elementary in North Platte for two years. She was a member of the Monday Musicale while in North Platte.

She returned to Kearney and received her bachelor's degree in 1963. She then taught in Neligh and Tilden.

On June 24, 1967, she married Jim Brown Jr. at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Neligh. They lived on a farm south of Tilden.

An accomplished musician, Mrs. Brown played the organ in the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Tilden for 20 years.

Also surviving her is her husband; a daughter Jolene (Chad) Larson of Tilden; a son, Jimmy III (Jennifer) of Omaha; three grandsons; a sister, June Dannatt of Omaha; a brother, Jerry Dannatt of Haigler; her parents-in-law, James and Margaret Brown of Tilden; two sisters-in-law, Eileen (Terry) Wagner of North Carolina and Pat Dannatt of North Platte; a brother-in-law, Jerry (Joy) Brown of Tilden; several nieces and nephews, including Blair (Melissa) Dannatt of North Platte; and many friends.

A scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Tilden.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Tilden with the Revs. James Brown and Robert Schmitz as concelebrants. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Marshall-Harlan Funeral Home in Tilden is in charge.

Zelda Eggleston

CALLAWAY - Zelda Eggleston, 91, formerly of Oconto and Broken Bow, died April 4, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Callaway.

She was born July 15, 1909, at Oconto to Benjamin and Lizzie Montgomery Hemphill.

On Aug. 31, 1925, she married Elijah "Lige" Eggleston at Norton, Kan. They lived in the Ryno Table, Oconto and Broken Bow areas.

Mrs. Eggleston was a member of the United Methodist Church more than 50 years and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include four daughters, LaVonne (Gene) Oxford of Broken Bow, Loraine (Delbert) Rogers of Franklin, Judy (Maynard) Stuempler of Oconto and Jane (Nick) LiaKos of Gardner, Kan.; five sons, Kenneth (Beulah), Donald (Wanda) and Charles (Vicky), all of Oconto, Glenn (Myrna) of Lexington and Lloyd (Sandra) of Broken Bow; a daughter-in-law, Violet Eggleston of Oconto; a son-in-law, Roger (Beverly) Casey of Houston; a sister-in-law, Stella Hemphill of Bellevue; 31 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 16, 1988; a daughter, Ella Mae Casey; two sons, Keith and Ivan; three grandsons; a great-grandson; two sisters; and five brothers.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Oconto and the Good Samaritan Center in Callaway.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Dale Coates officiating. Burial will be in the Oconto Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel.

Frank D. Johns Sr.

Frank Dudley Johns Sr., 53, of North Platte died April 1, 2001, at his home.

He was born May 4, 1947, at North Platte to Alfred William LeRoy and Norma Lucille Woodward Johns. He grew up in North Platte and after his schooling he worked for Mayflower/Cohagen Transfer and later Snell Electric. He also attended Mid-Plains Community College Voc-Tech.

He enjoyed his ham radio and had been a ham operator since 1978. He was a sky watcher for the Ham Radio Club and was a member of the North Platte Progressive Amateur Radio Club. His letters were NØDRU. He was a volunteer fireman.

On Jan. 14, 1994, he married Betty Jane Chambers in North Platte. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Mr. Johns is survived by his wife; a daughter Deb (Barry) Allen of North Platte; three sons, Frank Jr. (Tina) and Travis (Zipporah), both of North Platte, and Dale (Shanna) of Lincoln; two sisters, Ruby "Hopper" Yates of Omaha and Linda "Skipper" Barwick of Pahrump, Nev.; seven grandchildren, Natasha, B.J., Jonathan, Jesla, Rebecca, Shelby and Chelsea; and numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Darrel Robert Morrison.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Services were April 4, 2001, at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte with the Rev. Robert Payne officiating. Cremation followed the ceremony.

Odean Colonial Chapel was in charge.

Edward W. Johnson

OCONTO - Edward Johnson, 80, of Oconto died April 4, 2001, at the Callaway Hospital.

He was born Oct. 7, 1920, in the Buffalo Community in southern Custer County to Arthur K. and Rose T. Smock Johnson. He attended rural school district 231. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater, earning European, African and Middle Eastern ribbons, three Bronze Battle Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal and he was awarded two Purple Heart Medals.

Following his discharge, he married Edna Abele on Oct. 16, 1946.

They farmed in the Buffalo Community southwest of Oconto until 1986 when they moved to Oconto. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and time spent with his family.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the First Lutheran Church at Buffalo, a permanent member of the American Legion Post 250 for 55 years, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Oconto Senior Center.

Surviving him is his wife; three sons, Marvin (Linda) of Broken Bow and Darrel (Chris) and Greg (Tammy), both of Oconto; a sister, Shirley Johnson of Lexington; six grandchildren, Matt, Kristie, Heather, Heath and Kelli Johnson and Marci McNulty; and a great-grandson, Spencer Johnson.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda; his parents; and a sister, Vivian Johnson.

Memorials are suggested to the First Lutheran Church, Oconto Senior Center or the American Legion Post 250.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church at Buffalo with burial in the Lutheran Church Buffalo Cemetery southwest of Oconto.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Berryman Funeral Home at Cozad, with the family receiving friends at the funeral home at 7 p.m.

Deborah June Mueller

Deborah June Mueller, 47, of Beatrice died April 2, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln.

She was born, Dec. 22, 1953, to Ted and Jean Mueller at North Platte. She had been a resident of the Nebraska Development Center since 1964.

Survivors include her parents of North Platte; a sister, Angela (Louis) Schipper of Hamilton, New Zealand; two brothers, Albert and Andrew Mueller, both of North Platte; niece and nephews, Ryan and Jason Mueller and Daniel and Christina Schipper; and numerous other relatives.

A memorial has been established to the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Trust.

Christian Wake Service will be at 7 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Brouillette as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home and prior to service time at the church on Friday.

Lucille Skinner

OGALLALA - Esther Lucille Skinner, 91, a longtime school teacher in Keith County, died April 4, 2001, at Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.

She was born in Ogallala Dec. 24, 1909, the daughter of Eugene and Zelma Hodges Beal.

On May 29, 1934, she married Harve Skinner and they were married for 62 years. He preceded her in death in 1996.

After graduating from Ogallala High School, she attended the University of Wyoming and received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Her post-graduate work was in the field of English at the University of Nebraska.

Mrs. Skinner taught 30 years in the Keith County schools.

Survivors include a son, Leighton "Lee" (Dolores "Johnnie") of Rapid City, S.D.; grandchildren, Robin (Larry) Hampton of Chandler, Ariz., Kelli (Chris) Schrotberger of Grant, Perry (Polly) Skinner of Holyoke, Colo., and Jon Skinner of North Platte; stepgrandchildren, Denice Beck-Mercy of Rapid City, Jeff Beck and friend Angel Gerow of Blackhawk, S.D.; a sister-in-law, Irene Carey of Centerville, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Joe Skinner of Lemoyne; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Joel; her parents; four sisters; and two brothers.

A memorial has been established for the English department or the Ogallala Middle School Library, c/o Don Bartling, Superintendent of Schools, 205 E. Sixth, Ogallala, NE 69153.

The body was cremated.

Graveside services will at 11 a.m. Monday at the Ogallala Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Norris officiating.

Draucker Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge.
