Richard S. Martin
MASON CITY - Richard S. "Dick" Martin, 90, of Mason City died April 5, 2001, at the Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
He was born April 18, 1910, near Mason City to Charles W. and Myrtle Somerville Martin.
He graduated from high school in 1929 in Craig, Colo.
On June 7, 1937, he married Lucia Plantz in Cheyenne, Wyo.
They farmed and ranched in the Mason City area.
He was a member and served on the board of trustees of the First Baptist Church in Mason City.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the National Guard, the Mason City township board and the Mason City Service Club, and was a Round Grove School board member and a former Custer County assessor.
He also lobbied in Lincoln for the Farm Bureau.
He loved to square dance and was an avid artist.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife; two sons, Charles M. of Martinez, Calif., and Hugh A. of Hastings; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Lucian; his parents; and a brother.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Mason City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Revs. Victor Crawford and John Lewis officiating.
Burial will be in the Mason City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Arthur John Sullivan
EDDYVILLE - Arthur John Sullivan of Eddyville died April 5, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was 85.
He was born Jan. 18, 1916, at Eddyville to Michael and Mary Musil Sullivan.
He grew up at Eddyville, where he attended country school District 8 and then Eddyville High School, graduating in 1934.
He spent his entire life running the family farm.
On Feb. 19, 1955, he married Bernadine Kaupp Rohde at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Eddyville.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Eddyville Lion's Club.
He enjoyed farming as well as playing baseball, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Sullivan is survived by his wife; two daughter, JoAnn (Jim) Johnson of Kearney and Patricia (Rickie) Bowie of Miller; a son, Gary (Brenda) Rohde of Eddyville; a sister, Albia Hagan of Kearney; a brother, Adolph Sullivan of Kearney; seven grandchildren, Jackie (Brad) Eickoff of Columbus, John Rohde of Eddyville and his fiancé Kresha Lucking of Sumner, Jori (Aaron) Newell and Stephanie Bowie, all of Lincoln, Jerred (Amy) Johnson of Kearney, Dustin (Karla) Rohde of Pierce, and Christopher Bowie of Miller; two great-grandchildren, Erick Eickoff of Columbus and Kaitlyn Lucking of Sumner; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Martha, Frances and Bessie; and two brothers, Joe and Richard.
Memorials are suggested to the Eddyville Fire Department or the Eddyville Community Center.
Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Eddyville.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Neal Nollette officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
LaVonna Lou Downs Beardsley
CHEYENNE, Wyo. — LaVonna Lou Downs Beardsley, 68, of Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of Lexington, died April 5, 2001, in Cheyenne.
She was born Feb. 11, 1933, in Lexington to Mark and Hazel Downs.
She graduated from high school in 1950.
She was an officer manager at Warren Livestock Co. for 32 years.
She attended the First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Laramie County Democratic Central Committee, the Laramie County Democratic Women’s Club, was the Election Judge for Laramie County.
She was the 2001 winner of the Wyoming Democratic Party’s “Nellie Taylor Ross” Award.
She was a member and past president of the Cystic Fibrosis Board.
She received the award from the National Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation in 1970, a 10 years Volunteer Service Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 1980, and the Outstanding Voluntary Award from the Northern Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis in 1982.
She was a member of the National Secretaries of the Indian Paintbrush Chapter of National Secretaries Association and in 1976 she was honored with the Secretary of the Year Award.
She was also a leader for the Future Secretaries of America for East High School in the early 1970s.
She served as secretary/treasurer of the Laramie County Predator Board, secretary and board member of the Etcherpare Foundation Board and was a participant of the Wyoming Woolgrowers Conventions when in Laramie County.
Mrs. Beardsley is survived by a daughter, Betty Jo Beardsley of Cheyenne; a son, William Melvin (Sherrie Lynn) of Cheyenne; a sister, Martha (Dale) Smith of Cozad; two brothers, Stanley Downs of Artesia, Calif., and Jim Downs of Carthage, Miss.; and a grandson, Brian Mark Beardsley of Cheyenne.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Jane; her parents; and a brother, Mark Lowell Downs.
Memorials are suggested to hospice care.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Cheyenne with the Rev. Janet Forbes officiating.
Burial will be in the Beth El Cemetery in Cheyenne.
Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes of Cheyenne is in charge.
Julian W. Hoschouer
MAYWOOD — Julian W. Hoschouer, 83, formerly of rural Maywood, died April 6, 2001, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Mr. Hoschouer is survived by a daughter, Phyllis (Clifford) Bach of Hoonah, Alaska; two sons, Julian Jr. (Jeanette) of Julesburg, Colo., and Douglas (Charlene) of Red Cloud; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Morton Hoschouer in 1983.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home PO Box 517, Wood River, NE 68883.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Platte.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte and until services at the church Tuesday.

Lee G. Rice
HEMINGFORD — Lee G. Rice, 58, of Hemingford, formerly of Mullen, died April 6, 2001, in Rapid City, S.D.
He was born Oct. 14, 1942, in Mullen to Sidney and Tillie Wiese Rice.
He graduated from high school in Pine River, Minn., in 1961.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He was a truck driver for Leprino Trucking in Denver and a Cherry County Sheriff’s Deputy for 25 years.
At the time of his death, he was employed by the Box Butte County Road Department.
Mr. Rice is survived by his wife, Evelyn; four stepdaughters; four stepsons; his mother; four brothers, Donald (Louise) of Remer, Minn., Jim (Charlene) of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Leo (Ardith) of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Robert of Pine River; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father; and two stepsons.
A memorial has been established.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Cedarview Cemetery in Mullen with Leonard and Judy Ridenour officiating.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the Mullen Funeral Home.
