John V. Petrzelka
John Victor Petrzelka, 74, of North Platte died May 1, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Sept. 24, 1926, to Anton and Annie Petrzelka at Cheyenne, Wyo., where he grew up and graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He returned to Cheyenne after his discharge from the service.

Mr. Petrzelka attended DeVry Electrician School in Chicago and was an engineer at WOW-TV in Omaha for 40 years, retiring in 1990. He then moved to North Platte, where he had lived since.

He enjoyed horse racing, fishing and his family.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Bonnie Petrzelka of North Platte; five nieces, Diane (Ed) Lake and Peggy (Dennis) Robinson, both of Portland, Ore., Joni McClure of North Platte, Deb (Dwayne) Brown of Kearney and Anna (Jim Jr.) Felty of San Diego; a nephew, Charles Petrzelka Jr. of North Platte; and four great-nieces and nephews, Kelly and Chris McClure of North Platte and Clayton and Keenan Brown of Kearney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Daniels; and a brother, Charles.

A memorial has been established.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Pawnee Retirement Hotel. Private family graveside services will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Donald Eugene Witham
TOPEKA, Kan. - Donald Eugene Witham of Topeka, Kan., a former air-traffic controller at North Platte, died May 1, 2001, at Lexington Park Nursing Home in Topeka. He was 71.

He was born Feb. 15, 1930, to Dale H. and Ruth M. O'Connell Witham in Topeka. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1957.

Mr. Witham was an air-traffic controller, who had served at Lincoln, North Platte and Kansas City, Mo.

On Jan. 14, 1950, he married E. Irene Breit. She preceded him in death June 22, 1995.

On Feb. 24, 1996, he married Marilyn Luksa at Topeka.

Surviving him is his wife, Marilyn of Topeka; a daughter, Janet Lee Buttermore of Gretna; a son, Thomas of Kalispell, Mont.; four stepdaughters; three stepsons; six grandchildren; 11 grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Heart of America Hospice in Topeka.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Riverside Cemetery at Waterville, Kan.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Southern Baptist Church in Topeka.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Terry Chapel and Funeral Home in Waterville, Kan.

Lassie Lee Becker
ASHBY - Lassie Lee Becker, 65, died May 2, 2001, of cancer at her home north of Ashby.

She was born June 16, 1935, in St. Joseph, Mo., to E.C. and Marceline Wehrer Miller.

On Feb. 29, 1960, she married Peter R. Becker in Mullen. They had lived on their ranch north of Ashby for the past 41 years.

Through her life she spent countless hours helping with school activities and attending her daughters' many school functions.

She was an animal lover and dedicated her time to supporting animal rights groups.

Mrs. Becker is survived by her husband; four daughters, Tinka (Scott) Moller of Alliance, Tracey Morgan of Hyannis, Trudy (Kasey) Kistler of Ashby and Becky (Bill) Beans of Englewood, Colo.; 10 granddaughters, Heather, Taylor, Jordan and Lauren Moller of Alliance, Brittany and Brandy Morgan of Hyannis, Jaycee and Madison Kistler of Ashby and Meghan and Molly Beans of Englewood; her father; and a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and C.D. Hargreaves of Palm Desert, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Minnie and Felix Becker.

Memorials are suggested to the Hyannis Ambulance Fund, Hyannis Cemetery Fund, the St. Agnes Academy in Alliance and the Hearts United for Animals, P.O. Box 286 Auburn, NE 68305.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Alliance with the Rev. Bryan Ernest officiating.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the All Saints Catholic Church in Hyannis with the Revs. Jim Warner and M.J. Koprowski officiating. Casual dress is acceptable. Burial will be in the Hyannis Cemetery.

Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Alliance is in charge.

Eddie Fenton
BROKEN BOW - Eddie Fenton, 86, a retired Broken Bow businessman, died May 3, 2001, at the Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

He was born Aug. 4, 1914, at North Loup to George and Meta Huebner Fenton. His mother died when he was a small child and his father married his Aunt Clara. He grew up in the North Loup area in Valley County.

In 1938, he married Lucille Walbrecht and they lived in numerous towns in Nebraska before returning to Broken Bow in 1959, where he opened Eddie's Floor Covering. He retired in the late 1980s, and became a resident of the Sandhills Nursing Home in 1997.

He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Broken Bow.

He enjoyed attending horse races and visiting with people.

Mr. Fenton is survived by two daughters, Gail Kuhlman of Vancouver, Wash., and Mickey (Alan) Daily of Broken Bow; a son, Gary (Kay) of Broken Bow; two sisters, Myrtle Smith of Toole, Utah, and Bernice Boyd of Lima, Ohio; two brothers, Don Fenton of Grand Island and Darrel Fenton of Lima; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Harold Fenton and an infant brother.

Memorials are suggested to the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Bruce Freeman officiating.

The register book can be signed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Renee Hale
VALENTINE - Renee Hale, 27, of Valentine died May 3, 2001, at the Cherry County Hospital in Valentine.

Surviving her is a daughter, Katie; her parents, Pete and Sharon Hale; a sister, Kim Ormesher; and a brother, Dennis Hale. All are of Valentine.

Memorials may be designated for her daughter or given to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. today until time of services Saturday.

Sandoz Chapel of the Pines is in charge.

Eufemio 'Memo' Grado
LEXINGTON - Eufemio "Memo" Grado, 41, of Lexington died May 1, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born March 20, 1960, at Durango, Mexico, to Eusebio and Antonia Astorga Grado.

He married Raquel Pargas and they had three daughters. They moved to Lexington in 1995.

Mr. Grado enjoyed spending time with his family, especially attending and helping with his daughters' activities. He also enjoyed playing soccer.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Nabil, Nain and Nydia, all at home; his parents of Mexico; and brothers, sisters and other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington with the Rev. Don Buhrman officiating. The body will be cremated.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Frances Amweg

Frances Amweg, 82, of North Platte, died May 4, 2001, at Linden Court in North Platte.

She was born May 30, 1918, in Blacksburg, Va., to Claude Hampton and Janie Mae Davis Blessard. She grew up in Roanoke, Va. After her schooling she waitressed in Roanoke and later in Newport News, Va. During World War II she worked as a nurse's aid.

She married John S. Amweg on Dec. 26, 1945, in Medicine Lodge, Kan. They lived in Omaha, where Mr. Amweg worked for Union Pacific Railroad, before moving to North Platte. She worked as a waitress for King Fong for 10 years, the Cedar Bowl and the American Legion for 14 years, retiring in 1968.

Mrs. Amweg loved to dance, decapage, and was known for her roses. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Eagles Aeries No. 2839 Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 163, Union Pacific Old Timers Club, and DOES Drove No. 109.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Wardyn, a son, Frank (Jacque) Amweg, all of North Platte; three sisters, Virginia Griffin, Louise (Everett) Hamblette, all of Roanoke, and Margaret Manseau of Middleburg, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Sheila (Michael) Sneed, Deborah (Mark) Jolliffe, Steve (Tami) Wardyn, Timothy Kuebler, Todd Kuebler, Audrey (Ron) Fisher, LeAnn Amweg, Melissa Amweg, Callie Amweg and John Amweg; seven great-grandchildren, Amy Sneed, Scott Sneed, Tyler Pickett, John Jolliffe, Brandon Fisher, Rachel Fisher, and Mason Amweg; three step-great-grandchildren, Michael, Wendi, and Catie Foust; two great-great grandchildren, Austin Sneed and Brenden Fisher; brothers-in-law Wesley (Joan) Amweg of North Platte and Lorence (Kuoko) Amweg of Rancho Cordova, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; a daughter, Doris Kuebler; her parents; a son-in-law, Johnny Wardyn; two sisters, Thelma Janney and Callie Cantwell; five brothers, McKinley, Myrl, Robert, Hobert, and Herbert Blessard; and a grandson, Thomas Wardyn.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte, with Pastor Steven Jergensen of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and before the service Monday.

Odean Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
