Naomi Dorothy Hudson Armstrong

BROKEN BOW - Naomi Dorothy Hudson Armstrong, 89, a former Broken Bow resident, died May 3, 2001, in Lincoln.

She was born April 26, 1912, near Anselmo to Earl and Caroline Hudson. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1928. She taught country school thereafter.

She married Clifford Armstrong on Sept. 24, 1932.

Music, family and faith were at the center of her life. She served as church organist and choir director at the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow for more than 30 years. She and her husband played for barn dances in the 1930s and '40s, with her on the piano and him on the fiddle.

She loved flowers, particularly roses, irises and peonies.

She was part of the vocal quartet "The Harmonettes," who performed regularly in the area during that time.

Survivors include two sons, Gene (Bess) and Rod (Shelly) of Lincoln; her stepmother, Thelma Hudson of Broken Bow; a stepbrother, Gaylor Hudson of Shakopee, Minn.; and nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Paul Hudson; and a sister, Edna Hudson.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow with Gene Goben officiating. Burial will be in Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary, which is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas E. Carlson

LEXINGTON - Thomas E. Carlson, 48, of rural Lexington, died May 3, 2001, at his home southwest of Lexington.

He was born July 21, 1952, at Lexington to Donald and Maxine Lange Carlson. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1970.

In 1971, he married Kay Major. They made their home in Lexington and later moved to Fort Collins, Colo.

He worked in a cabinet shop and attended Colorado State, where he received a bachelor's degree. In 1993, he moved to Arizona, where he attended the University of Arizona and earned a master's degree in fine arts. They returned to Lexington in 1996, where he worked in cabinet and furniture making. He was an accomplished artist, working in sculptures, painting and other art forms.

He was baptized in the Presbyterian church.

Survivors include his wife, Kay, of Lexington; a daughter, Charity (Matt) Haviland of Denver; a son, Damian Marc Carlson of Lexington; his parents, Donald and Maxine Carlson of Lexington; and a sister, Vicki (Mike) Davis of Lexington.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and three uncles.

Memorials are suggested to Central Plains Home Health and Hospice or to the Carlson family.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with the Rev. Floyd H. Starr II officiating.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad, which is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn K. Cogswell

GOTHENBURG - Evelyn K. Cogswell, 89, of Gothenburg, died May 4, 2001, at Hilltop Estates.

She was born May 31, 1911, to John Henry and Rosina Laura Billeter Kaufman. She graduated from Cozad High School in 1930 and attended Kearney State Teachers College. She taught rural school in Dawson County and also in Oregon.

She married William Cogswell June 15, 1940, in Los Angeles.

She worked at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney for many years and moved to Gothenburg in 1965.

She was a member of the Gothenburg Area Retired Teachers Association and the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Patricia (Lawrence) Block and Betty (Burton) McPheeters, both of Gothenburg; two brothers, Harold (Hazel) of Kearney and Karl (Marjorie) of Cozad; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1967, her parents, and a sister, Marguerite Gronewold.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or the Nebraska Stroke Foundation.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. David Fowler officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Blase Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn L. Fagot

LEXINGTON - Evelyn L. Fagot, 85, of Lexington, died May 3, 2001, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

She was born March 23, 1916, in Denver to John and Tillie Lindblade. She attended school near Holdrege and Lexington, and she graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1932. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and taught school in Dawson County for 11 years.

After that, she directed theatricals across the United States. She enjoyed being a spiritual leader at Camp Farthestout in Colorado and Nebraska for several years. She also worked for the welfare office in Lexington.

In 1951, she married Harold Fagot and they made their home north of Lexington on the Fagot farm. In 1980, they moved to their home in Lexington.

Survivors include her husband; two sisters, Van (Bill) Kloepping of Lexington and Lindy (Gene) Curtis of Mesa, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Calvary Assembly of God Church, the fire department or the Alzheimer's Association.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Lexington with Pastor Joe Masten and Pastor Dik Abbott of Cedaredge, Colo., officiating.

Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington, which is in charge of arrangements.

Oliver R. Johnston

Oliver R. Johnston, 89, of Curtis, died May 3, 2001, at McCook Community Hospital.

Mr. Johnston was born May 22, 1911, in Moorefield, to Robert Z. and Hazel Lucille Hecht Johnston. He graduated in 1930 from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis.

He married Ilda McConahay in 1932. She preceded him in death in 1998. He married Evelyn (McPherson) Fletcher in 1967, in Memphis, Tenn.

He worked for Swift & Co. as an ice cream maker in Hastings, Wichita, Kan., and Memphis, from 1942 to 1972. He moved to Curtis in 1972 and worked for his brother Earl and later worked for his son at Town and Country Market .

He served as mayor of Curtis as well as on the City Council for a number of years. He was a member of the Flower and Garden Club in Curtis. He loved fishing, gardening and growing flowers. He was very proud of his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of Curtis; three daughters, Bonnie Goodson of Broken Arrow, Okla., Donna (Randy) Vlasin of Imperial, and Janet (Ron) Harpham of Kenesaw; three sons, Louis (Jane) Johnston of Bluesprings, Mo., Douglas (Phyllis) Johnston of Curtis, and Lewis (Betty) Fletcher of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Howard (Evelyn) Johnston of Fort Collins, Colo., and Earl Dean (Marilyn) Johnston of Curtis; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lyle, one sister, Wilda Brown, and son and daughter-in-law Robert and Lola Johnston.

Memorials can be made to the horticulture department at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Curtis, with the Rev. Shirley Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Curtis Cemetery.

Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Hubert H. Pandorf

CALLAWAY - Hubert H. Pandorf, 85, of Callaway died May 3, 2001, at Callaway Good Samaritan Center.

He was born April 25, 1916, at Triumph in Custer County, to Albert E. and Kathrine Ridder Pandorf. He graduated from Callaway High School in 1934.

He married Mary Hitchman Nov. 12, 1949, at Callaway. He was a lifetime resident of the Callaway area and farmed and ranched there until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church of Callaway.

Survivors include three daughters, Martha Ann White of Gretna, Mary Ellen Halbur of Omaha, and Susan J. Schumacher of Lincoln; two sons, James of Axtell and Jerry of Callaway; four brothers, Theodore of Shelby, Lawrence of Oakland, Calif., Raymond of Callaway, and Bernard of Sacramento, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Chris Pandorf, Jill Dolberg, Dan Pandorf, Brook Pandorf, Paul Schumacher, Kati White, Mark Schumacher and Samantha Pandorf; and a great-grandchild, Cree Pandorf.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a sister, Betty; and a brother, Francis.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Boniface Catholic Church or to the donor's choice.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Callaway with Father James Novakowski officiating.

Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery at Callaway.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the church. Rosary will be Sunday at 7 p.m., also at the church.

Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home of Callaway is in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Ann Witthuhn

Carolyn Ann Witthuhn, 60, of North Platte, died May 3, 2001, at Bergan-Mercy Hospital in Omaha.

She was born Oct. 31, 1940, to Charles and Katherine Kumpf Willets in Lexington. She was raised in Lexington, where she attended school, graduating in 1958. After graduation, she attended the University of Nebraska and three years at St. Elizabeth in Lincoln.

In 1961, she obtained her registered technologist X-ray degree. At the time of her death she was assistant director of radiology at Great Plains Regional Medical Center, where she had been employed for the past 30 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

She married Mark Witthuhn on June 13, 1970, at North Platte.

Survivors include her husband of North Platte; one daughter, Katie (Chris) VanBoskirk of Omaha; her mother, Katherine Willets of Lexington; two sisters, Sharlene (Tom Hickman) Chadwick of Woodland, Calif., Barbara (Bob) Reynolds of Lincoln; one brother, Chuck (Bonnie) Willets of Columbus, one granddaughter, Abigail of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her father, her step-mother-in-law, Evelyn Witthuhn, and her father-in-law, Melvin Witthuhn.

A memorial has been established to Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Hawley officiating. Burial will be at North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
