Violet Brooks
COZAD - Violet Brooks, 80, of Cozad died May 14, 2001, at the Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad.

She was born Feb. 14, 1921, near Eustis to Henry and Grace Mills Etherton. In 1926, she moved with her parents to rural Cozad, where she attended District 29 school and graduated from Cozad High School in 1939.

On June 3, 1939, she married Alvin "Pete" Brooks. They made their home on farm sites north and southwest of Cozad until 1972, when they moved to Cozad.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Navy Mothers. For many years she was a statistician for Cozad's baseball team in Nebraska League that her husband played on. She continued the activity with her sons and grandsons games.

Mrs. Brooks is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Brooks of Los Alamos, N.M., and Connie (Rod) Donner of Cozad; three sons, Larry (Jeanne) of Cozad, David (Anne) of Yuma, Ariz., and Douglas of Holdrege; two brothers, Lloyd (Kay) Etherton and Kenneth (Betty) Etherton, all of Cozad; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999 and a granddaughter, Jo Shannon.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Cozad with the Rev. Steve Deines officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery south of Cozad.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Eileen V. Culbertson
HYANNIS - Eileen V. Culbertson, 81, of Fresno, Calif., died May 12, 2001, in Fresno.

She was born July 20, 1919, at Larbrie Creek, the daughter of Almon and Blanche Abbott.

Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn (John) Moore of Fresno; a son, Floyd (Rosemary) Moran of Olathe, Kan.; a sister, Maxine Christensen of Kennewick, Wash.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Hyannis Cemetery.

Draucker Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge of arrangements.

Susan Peden
GOTHENBURG - Susan E. Peden, 92, of Gothenburg died May 14, 2001, at Hilltop Estates.

She was born Feb. 17, 1909, at Darr to Simon and Francis Caulk Duffey. She graduated from Cozad High School.

On March 23, 1927, she married Ward F. Peden at Julesburg, Colo. They farmed south of Cozad until 1943, when they moved to a farm in the Banner Community south of Gothenburg. Her husband preceded her in death on July 21, 1984.

She moved into Gothenburg in 1984, and had lived for the past eight years at the Slack Nursing Home and Hilltop Estates.

Mrs. Peden was a member of the Banner United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Open Door Club and the Birthday and Anniversary Club. She enjoyed the Banner Community and watching baseball.

Survivors include two sons, Harold (Georgia) of Humansville, Mo., and Phillip Edward of Cozad; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Peden of Gothenburg; a sister, Roberta Wilson of Phillipsburg, Kan.; four grandchildren, Patti (Mark) Aden and Kirt (Beverly) Peden of Gothenburg, Tim Peden of Cozad and Terese (Matthew) Baker of Hamilton, N.J.; and two great-grandsons: Jacob and Alex Peden of Gothenburg.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Roger on April 21, 1997; a daughter-in-law, Audry Peden; two sisters, Helen and Sybil; and two brothers, Wayne and Earl.

Memorials are suggested to the Banner United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the church south of Gothenburg. Burial will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery north of Cozad prior to the services.

Blase Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg is in charge.

Lois Adalaide Bellin
Lois Adalaide Bellin, 87, died May 14, 2001, in North Platte after a long illness.

She was born Oct. 19, 1913, in Diller to John Delbert and Bellala Gurton Bivens Cherry. In 1940, she moved to Glendale, Calif., where she lived until 1988.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Wishart of Hillsboro, Ore.; a son, Ted of Lincoln; a sister, Hazel Trego of North Platte; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin; two sisters, Gladys Albers and Grace Hall; and a brother, Jack Cherry.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte. Burial will be in Glendale, Calif.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.

Seth Coffman
HALSEY- Seth Tyrel Coffman, 18, of Halsey died May 16, 2001, in a one-vehicle accident on a county road three and a half miles west of Brewster in Blaine County.

He was born Nov. 21, 1982, at Broken Bow to Mickey and Melanie Scheer Coffman. At the age of 5, he moved with his family from Elsmere to the 7J Cattle Company northwest of Halsey. He attended grade school at Halsey and graduated from Sandhills High School in Dunning in May of 2001.

Mr. Coffman was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Ainsworth, the Future Farmers of America and a member and bareback director of Nebraska High School Rodeo Association.

During high school he played football and basketball and was homecoming king during his senior year.

Survivors include his parents; two sisters, Lacey and Kaisha Coffman, both of Halsey; and his grandparents, Ina Coffman of Dunning and Earl "Shorty" and Beverly Scheer of Ainsworth.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Don Coffman; and his great-grandparents, Arnold and Frances Fink, George and Martha Scheer, Verna and Henry Cords and Jim and Bessie Coffman.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sandhills High School gym in Dunning with the Rev. Georg Williams officiating.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. The body will be cremated after visitation and a private inurnment will be in the Hawley Flats Cemetery in Blaine County.

Richard Walter Hawley
VALPARAISO - Richard "Dick" Walter Hawley, 71, of Valparaiso, former teacher at North Platte Vocational Technical School from 1969 to 1973 and Hershey High School from 1959 to 1965, died May 17, 2001, at his home.

He was born Dec. 22, 1929, near Republican City to Chester Carl and Gladys Flora Woods Hawley. He graduated from high school in 1948.

On Aug. 12, 1959, he married Iona Mae Blickenstaff at her home in Stamford.

Mr. Hawley is survived by his wife; a daughter, Eva (Bruce) Schroer of Lincoln; two sons, Dan (Melissa) of St. James, Mo., and Jay of Fairbanks, Alaska; four granddaughters, Kayla and Rachael Hawley and Kasa and Kameron Schroer; a grandson, Seth Schroer; his mother; a brother, John (Audrie) Hawley of Santa Anna, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Donna Hawley of Nelson and Lola Hawley of Alma; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1960; two brothers, Robert in 1973 and Chester in 1997; and his father and mother-in-law, Bert and Lottie Blickenstaff.

Memorials are suggested to the Northwest Community Church or to St. Elizabeth's Hospice.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Berean Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Frank VanCampen of the Northwest Community Church in Malcom officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in the Republican City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Northwest Community Church in Malcom.

Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma is in charge.

John T. Kinish
KEARNEY - John T. Kinish, 92, of Kearney, formerly of Anselmo, died May 16, 2001, at Mount Carmel Home in Kearney.

He was born Aug. 18, 1908, at Anselmo to Antonino and Rosario Cutraia Kinish. He attended school south of Anselmo. His father died in 1910, and his mother did the farming.

In May 1941, he married LaVerne Moller at St. Anselm's Catholic Church. They lived in the farm community southwest of Anselmo.

Later he worked for the Koubek farm near Arnold where they farmed and raised cattle. In the later 1950s, they moved to Kansas and he worked in construction and later moved to Smith Center, Kan. Because of health reasons, they moved north of Minden in August of 1995. His wife died March 28, 1996.

He was a member of the Catholic church at Smith Center.

Mr. Kinish is survived by a daughter-in-law, LaNell Kinish of Council Groves, Kan.; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son, Tom; a granddaughter; two sisters; and three brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the Sisters at the Mount Carmel Home in Kearney or St. Anselm's Cemetery Fund.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo with the Rev. Todd Philipsen officiating. Burial will be in the St. Anselm's Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today followed by a Christian Wake service at 7:30 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Harold D. Andersen
BEATRICE - Harold David Andersen, 80, former North Platte resident, died May 17, 2001, at Beatrice Manor in Beatrice.

He was born Feb. 27, 1921, to Edward S. and Marie A. Steen Andersen at Curtis. He was raised and attended school in Curtis.

On Nov. 10, 1945, he married Evelyn Nelson in Holyoke, Colo. She preceded him in death April 1, 1972.

He married Lois Hoover, who also preceded him in death June 9, 1989.

On Aug. 17, 1993, he married, Viola Gillett. She died Oct. 31, 1995.

On June 30, 1999, he married Elsie Morgan and she died Dec. 30, 1999. He worked for Fairmont Foods for 24½ years, the North Platte Opportunity Center for 2½ years and the North Platte Public School System for 5½ years. He enjoyed going to local nursing homes and performing music for the residents.

Mr. Andersen is survived by a daughter, Janet (Joe) Steffen of Beatrice; a step-daughter, Louise (Robert) Cullinan of Paxton; three sons, Eldon (Cindy) of North Platte, Gene (Trina) of York and Mark (Carol) of Warren, Ga.; three step-sons, Don (Marlene) Hoover of Atlantic, Iowa, and Dan (Donna) Hoover and Terry (Tammy) Hoover, all of North Platte, three sisters, Katherine (Roy) Fisher of Moorefield, Grace Hanthorn of McCook and Ethel Bailey of Victorville, Calif.; numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Frances Farwick; and a step-son, Tom Hoover.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with Don Hoover officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.
