Donald John 'Jack' Curran
Donald John "Jack" Curran, 79, of North Platte died May 24, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Grand Island.

He was born June 18, 1921, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Walter Francis and Cecelia Alice Walker Curran. He grew up in Council Bluffs and entered the U.S. Army in 1941 after graduating from high school. He was discharged in 1945 and in 1948 he moved to Denver. He was recalled by the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

In 1947, he married Claire Elizabeth Friend at Denver. She preceded him in death in 1964. He returned to Denver until 1956, and worked as a meat cutter for Safeway. In 1958, he went to Omaha to barber school and in 1959, moved to North Platte.

He worked for several years at the City Barber Shop and then at the Platte Barber Shop for 18 years, retiring in 1976 for health reasons.

On Aug. 7, 1977, he married Glenna Lorene Binegar in North Platte where they made their home. She preceded him in death in 1999.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 1504, the Eagles Aeries 2839, the American Legion PR Halligan Post 163 and the Moose Lodge.

Mr. Curran is survived by two sons, Tim Arthur (Kay) of Orlando, Fla., and Donald John of Morgan City, La.; a stepdaughter, Lorna Morgan of Lincoln; two sisters, Marion Alice White of Des Moines, Iowa, and Alberta Bernice Dawson of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a brother, Gail Howard (Virginia) Curran of Denver; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bernadette Jones; and a brother, Walter Francis Curran.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, from 1 to 9 p.m.

Sunday and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel

Stella McMillan
BROKEN BOW - Wilma Estella Dunbar McMillan of Broken Bow, formerly of the Milburn area, died May 25, 2001, in Broken Bow She was 90.

She was born Dec. 2, 1910, in the Moulton Community in Loup County to John and Belle Henry Dunbar. She attended grade school in Dry Valley in west Loup County and graduated from Taylor High School in 1928.

On Feb. 5, 1931, she married James W. McMillan of Milburn Feb. 5, 1931. They spent their married life farming and ranching in the Milburn area. She later moved to Broken Bow.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow. She helped organize the extension club at Milburn. She enjoyed several hobbies including quilting, crocheting, knitting, gardening and sewing.

Mrs. McMillan is survived by a daughter, Roberta B. ( Maurice "Tuffy") Thompson of Anselmo; two son, James "Ted" (Betty) of Broken Bow and Loren K. (Jane) of Martin, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Debra Novotney, Linda Ellingson, Lorna Slattery, Cindy Embree, Ginny Ann McMillan, and Jim and Mike Thompson; a sister-in-law, Mattie Dunbar of Sargent; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sisters; and six brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Bertha Werley
BROKEN BOW - Bertha Werley, 96, of Broken Bow, formerly of the Milburn and Anselmo area, died May 24, 2001, in Broken Bow.

She was born Sept. 17, 1904, in Loup County to John Henry and Cora Belle Henry Dunbar. She graduated from Taylor High School.

She taught school and met Ray Werley at Wallace where she was teaching.

On June 3, 1930, she married Ray Werley at Taylor. They farmed and ranched near Wallace where she was teaching. In 1944, they moved to their ranch home near Milburn. They retired from framing and ranching in 1975, and they moved to Anslemo. Her husband died April 27, 1989. She had been a resident of Heritage Hall Nursing Home for the last three years.

Mrs. Werley was a member of the United Methodist Church at Anselmo and the Willing Workers Club at Milburn.

Survivors include a son, Shannon (Carol) of Broken Bow; two granddaughters, Christy Werley of Kent, Wash., and Donna Ducker of Sargent; two great-grandsons, Nate and Brett Ducker; a sister, Stella McMillan of Broken Bow, who died the next day; a sister-in-law, Mattie Dunbar of Sargent; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and six brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Doug Jones officiating.

Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Ruth M. Bybee
CURTIS — Ruth M. Bybee, 82, of Curtis died May 26, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

She was born Aug. 22, 1918, at Maxwell to Robert and Grace Coon Rhine. She graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis in 1937.

On April 19, 1937, she married Robert H. Bybee at Oberlin, Kan.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Curtis. She enjoyed cooking and crocheting.

Mrs. Bybee is survived by her husband; two daughters, Sandra (Russell) Swearingen of Lincoln and Carolyn (Hazen) Cole of Curtis; a son, Rodger (Lori Anderson) of Curtis; six grandchildren, Jackie (David) Castello of Eagle, Colleen and Billy Swearingen, both of Lincoln, Denise (Dusty) Bybee of Hillsboro, Ore., Brenda Cole (Todd Stearns) of York and Karla (Russ) Callan of Ord; nine great-grandchildren, Jesse, and Jordan Castello, Madicyn Swearingen, Brandi, Adam, Kristin and Savanna Bybee and Riley and Ryan Callen; and three special friends, Calsie, Malacie and Tanner Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Lila, Lela and Pearl; two brothers, Harley and Junior.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Curtis with the Rev. Shirley Carpenter officiating. The body was cremated. Inurnment will be in the Curtis Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Memorial book signing will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at Blase Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.

Jack L. Davis
Jack L. Davis, 87, of North Platte died May 25, 2001, at his home.

He was born June 18, 1913, in Claremore, Okla., to John Brown and Elizabeth Jane Barnhill Davis. He graduated from high school in Claremore. He attended business school in Tulsa before entering the U.S. Army.

He met Dorothy L. Campbell in Wyoming and they were married March 7, 1938, in Kearney.

During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Denver and served in Hitchcock, Texas. He also served as an instructor at Rice University in Houston for the Navy.

After his discharge, they moved to North Platte. He was very proud of his 20-year military service.

In 1957, they moved to California where he worked for the State of California Highway Division until his retirement in January 1978. That following summer, they returned to North Platte.

Mr. Davis was a member of the Platte Valley Lodge 32 AF & AM, the Eagles Aerie 1504, PR Halligan Post 163 of the American Legion and the 21 Dance Club. He enjoyed gardening and dancing. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Memorials are suggested to Great Plains Hospice.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Sandra (Buck) Ripple and Karen (Dave) Stearns, all of North Platte, Sheryl (Dennis) Desy of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Kathy Davis of Carter Lake, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Mike (Carol) and Mark (Sarah) Ripple and Theresa (Marco) Vieyra, all of North Platte, Pamela (Eric) Krause, Julie (James) Oliver, and Jennifer Desy, all of St. Louis, and Gregg Stearns of Lincoln; 12 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Lillian Davis Wilson, Elizabeth Davis Gibbs, Ella Davis Dixon and Minnie Davis Cochran; and six brothers, Jeff, Jess, Jetar, Ezekiel, Gordon and his twin brother, Joe Davis.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Adams & Swanson Chapel with Rev. Perry Edwards officiating and Masonic rites by the Platte Valley Lodge 32 AF & AM. Inurnment will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors by the North Platte Veterans organizations.

Teresa P. Flores
LEXINGTON — Teresa P. Flores, 87, of Lexington died May 25, 2001, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

She was born Jan. 14, 1914, at Shafter, Texas, to Inocente and Carmen Quintana Pacheco. She grew up on Texas where she lived until moving to Lexington in 1945. She married Jesus O'Con and he preceded her in death in 1938. She then married Manuel Chavez and later married Jose Flores on Jan. 14, 1987, at Lexington.

She did housekeeping work for area families and worked at the Hollingsworth Motel as well as the Lexington Laundry.

She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington.

Mrs. Flores is survived by her husband, Jose Flores; a daughter, Modesta P. Chavez of Fort Stockton, Texas; a son, Pablo Chavez of Fort Stockton; three sisters, Cruz Chavarria of Artesia, N.M., Francisca Sanchez of Marta, Texas, and Paula Granado of Valentine, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Louie O'Con; and a brother, Inocente Pacheco.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Ann's Catholic Church of the donor's choice.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. at the church in Lexington with the Rev. Ray Kosmicki officiating. Burial will be in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Marjorie I. Monroe
GOTHENBURG — Marjorie Monroe, 86, of Gothenburg died May 24, 2001, at Cozad.

She was born Oct. 7, 1914, to Raleigh and Lizzie Fablinger Joy. She graduated from Gandy High School.

On Feb. 20, 1932, she married Frank Monroe and they lived in Gandy and the Cozad area before moving to Gothenburg in 1966. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Darr Elevator and the Cozad Feed Mill. She later worked for Monroe Auto Equipment Co. in Cozad for 20 years in quality control.

Mrs. Monroe is survived by three daughters, Marguerite (Owen) Meredith of Gothenburg, Clarine (Derold) Davidson of Cozad and Sandra (Lew) Feyen of Salem, Ore.; three sons, Frank Jr. (Mary) of Cave City, Ark., Stanley (Alma) of Northglenn, Colo., and Dale (Kathy) of North Platte; a brother, Alvin Jo of Grand Island; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975; an infant son; two sisters, Leta Nensel and Reta Zimmerman; and two brothers, Vernon and Floyd Joy.

Memorials are suggested to the Central Plains Home Health and Hospice.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Parkview United Methodist Church in Cozad with the Rev. Jim Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.
