Rene G. Hamel

BADGER’S ISLAND, Kittery, Maine - Rene G. Hamel, 76, formerly of Epping, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the York Harbor Home.

He was born July 28, 1926, in Stonington, Conn., the son of the late Aldage and Lillian (Hebert) Hamel and was raised in Epping.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Hamel was a commercial fisherman and owned and operated Kittery Shellfish Co. on Bagder’s Island for many years. He also worked for Seaward Construction Co., laying power lines, and built homes with his father-in-law of the Dion Lumber Yard.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, the theater, stock car and NASCAR racing, birds, reading, and played the banjo. He was an avid sports fan.

He was a lifelong Democrat and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post No. 6.

The widower of Carmen (Dion) Hamel, who died in an auto accident in 1965, he is survived by two sons and their wives, Ronald and Mary Ann Hamel of Gorham, Maine, and Robert and Pamela Hamel of South Berwick; three daughters, Jean Koterba and Janet Thompson, both of Kittery, and Joan Johnson of South Berwick; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Claire Hamel of Hampton and Jeannine McCreary of Chicago and Hampton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Ronald Hamel; and two sisters, Germaine Fortier and Jacqueline Porter.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Raphael Church, Kittery. Private graveside services will be held in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Maine Fisherman’s Forum Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 288, Bath, ME 04530.

Dorothy M. Keyser

NORTH HAMPTON - Dorothy M. "Dottie" Keyser, 79, of Old Locke Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2003, at her home.

She was born Feb. 18, 1923, in Brooklyn N.Y., the daughter of the late Gustove R. and Elly (Steenberg) Borger. She had resided in Amherst, Mass., before coming to New Hampshire in 1975.

Mrs. Keyser was a fashion model in New York City in the early 1940s and worked for the Sperry Gyroscope Co. during World War II.

She was active with the Engineering Wives at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and was involved in Amherst’s local Republican Party and with her children’s activities. She served as president of the North Hampton Woman’s Club for several years.

The widow of Car* Kelly" Keyser, her husband of 51 years who died in 1995, she is survived by three sons and their wives, Peter and Sarah Keyser of Amherst, Mark and Terry Keyser of New Milford, Conn., and Paul and Wendy Keyser of West Newbury, Mass; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Arthur G. Parent Jr.

SEABROOK - Arthur G. Parent Jr., 61, of Alison Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, in Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport, Mass., after a period of failing health.

He was born Dec. 30, 1941, in Rhode Island, and was raised by his grandparents, George and Gladys McCaughy in Annapolis Valley, Canada. He resided in North Hampton before moving to Seabrook, 31 years ago.

Mr. Parent worked for Newbury Trucking, Newbury, Mass., for several years, retiring because of poor health. He had previously worked at Applecrest for four years, at Twin Town Trailer Sales, North Hampton, for three years, ran Art’s Mobile Home Service in Seabrook for several years, and for Midas in Seabrook.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking, gardening with his grandchildren, woodworking and fly tying.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Alice (Crowell) Parent of Seabrook; one daughter and her husband, Debra and Michael Edwards of Kingston; one son, Arthur R. Parent of Seabrook; and three grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held at Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Wendall Irvine officiating.

Theresa M. Peloquin

YORK, Maine - Theresa M. Peloquin, 93, of High Street, Hampton, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Seacoast Health Center, Hampton.

She was born April 28, 1909, in Springfield, Vt., the daughter of Arthur and Mary (Dashner) Lemire.

She attended Greenfield (Mass.) High School.

Mrs. Peloquin and her late husband owned and operated the Village Bootery and Cliff’s Taxi Service in York for many years. During World War II she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher Church, York, and was a member of the York Bridge Club for many years.

The widow of Hormisdas J. "Misdas" Peloquin, who died in 1988, she is survived by one son, Clifford H. Peloquin of Morrow, Ohio; four grandsons; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cele Wood of North Hatfield, Mass., and Florence Hagen of Weathersfield, Vt.; several nieces and nephews, including David and Elaine Hagen of Hampton, with whom she made her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday in St. Christopher Church, York.

Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Arrangements were by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Richard D. Riddle

NORTH HAMPTON - Richard D. Riddle, 51, of 122 Lafayette Road, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born May 16, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Joseph and Grace (Doherty) Riddle. He had resided in North Hampton for three years coming from Portsmouth.

Mr. Riddle was the district sales manager for Chex Finer Foods of Attleboro, Mass., and Haden House of New Jersey.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Karna Swenson; one daughter, Catherine A. "Catt" Riddle of Avon, Mass.; one son, Richard D. Riddle Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; three brothers, George Riddle of Derby, Conn., Joseph Riddle of Clifton, Va., and Patrick Riddle of Shelton, Conn.; one sister, Joyce Dobek of Derby; and several nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Grace Riddle.

Funeral services were held Thursday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Memorial donations may be made to Imus Ranch, Inc., P.O. Box 250, Ribera, NM 87560 for the benefit of children with cancer.

Arnold C. Sanborn

GREENLAND - Arnold C. Sanborn, 66, of Vernita Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, in Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover.

He was born March 18, 1936, in Waterford, Maine, the son of Richard and Bernice (Winslow) Sanborn and had resided in Greenland for 17 years.

Mr. Sanborn was employed by the Stanley Corp. at the Passport Center in Portsmouth and had previously worked at Grossman’s for 20 years.

He was a member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 in Newmarket; the United Power Squadron; past commander of the Portsmouth Power Squadron; and a member of the Mount Tir’em Masonic Lodge, No. 132 in Waterford.

He enjoyed sailing, the outdoors and spending time at camp.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lois (McCaffrey) Sanborn of Greenland; two daughters, Kathleen Sanborn of Dover and Lisa Sanborn of Greenland; one son and his wife, David and Jayne Sanborn of Newmarket; four grandchildren; two brothers, Bruce Sanborn and Barry Sanborn, both of South Waterford, Maine; one sister, Carol Sanborn of South Waterford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one brother, Robert Sanborn.

Funeral services were held Thursday in the Kent and Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket, with the Rev. David Wuori officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Lucy N. Beruk

HINSDALE - Lucy N. Beruk, 80, formerly of Old Chesterfield Road, died Jan. 1, 2003, in Cheshire Medical Center, Keene.

She was born June 1, 1922, in Brattleboro, Vt., the daughter of John and Helen (Clune) Nesbitt. She was a resident of Athol, Mass., before moving to Hinsdale.

She was a graduate of St. Michael High School, Brattleboro.

Mrs. Beruk was employed by American Optical Co., Brattleboro, from 1967 until her retirement in 1986.

The widow of Theodore Beruk, who died in 1972, she is survived by one son, Jack Beruk of Dublin, Ohio, two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Nesbitt and Robert Nesbitt, and three sisters, Hope Nesbitt, Mary Emery and Elizabeth Dyke.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 4 in St. Michael Church, Brattleboro. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hinsdale.

Memorial donations may be made to the Activities Fund at Harborside-Applewood Healthcare Center, 8 Snow Road, Winchester, NH 03470.

Arrangements were by the Max E. Carr Funeral Home, Brattleboro.

George E. Henshaw

KINGSTON - George Edward Henshaw, 83, of Exeter Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born April 24, 1919, in Salem, Mass., the son of the late Wallace L. and Helen M. (Newcomb) Henshaw. He resided in North Andover, Mass., before moving to Kingston in 1959.

He was a 1937 graduate of Salem High School and attended Northeastern University. He played high school and college football.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving three years in the South Pacific as a medical technician and was the recipient of the Presidential Citation, C067 American Division, the American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with two service stars.

Mr. Henshaw owned and operated a dairy farm until his retirement 20 years ago.

He was a longtime member of the Starr King Lodge AF & AM of Salem.

In his youth he enjoyed skiing as a member of a club that built its own lodge in North Conway, sailing with the Sea Scouts and climbing Mt. Katahdin.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lillian A. (Kersis) Henshaw of Kingston; one daughter, Valerie A. Gilbert of California; two sons, George E. Henshaw of California and Richard F. Henshaw of East Kingston; four grandchildren; and one brother, Lenley Henshaw of Wells, Maine.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, with the Rev. Wendall Irvine officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the N.H. SPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.

Howard C. Page Jr.

SEABROOK - Howard Currier Page Jr., 75, a longtime resident of Hampton, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born Jan. 22, 1927, in Keene, the son of the late Hon. Howard Currier Page Sr. and Maud (Glazier) Page.

He attended Emerson Boys School in Exeter, Sanborn Seminary in Kingston and Hampton Academy in Hampton.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 3705 AAF Base Unit.

Mr. Page was the founder and president of Howard Page Aluminum and Vinyl Products Co. of Hampton. He was the former owner of Page’s Restaurant at Hampton Beach, which was famous for its shore dinners. It later became the Seven Seas Restaurant.

He served as a bail commissioner for Hampton District Court; was a call firefighter for the Hampton Fire Department; a member of the Hampton Planning Board, Municipal Budget Committee and the Marsh Reclamation Commission; and was the chairman of the Winnacunnet High School Board.

He was a 50-year member of Hampton’s American Legion Post No. 35; president of the Hampton Rod and Gun Club; a member of Abenaqui Country Club, Rye; president of the Profile Senior Golf Association; and was actively involved with Hampton Boy Scout Troop 177 for many years serving as Scoutmaster and in other capacities.

Mr. Page was a member of St. James Masonic Lodge No. 102, F&AM; a member of the Valley of Portsmouth/Dover Scottish Rite; the Valley of Nashua Scottish Rite; Bektash Temple Shrine; East Gate Masonic Club of Seabrook; and a charter member of Tide Mill Chapter No. 67 Order of Eastern Star.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hampton and an avid golfer. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with the scout troop.

He is survived by his wife, Lois (Allen) Page; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Howard C. II and Jo-Anne Page of Seabrook, Carl A. Page of Newburyport, Mass., Jason C. and Noreen Page of Seabrook, and Nathan G. and Alicen Page of Hampton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Interment will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hampton Boy Scout Troop 177, c/o Douglas Aykroyd, 19 Forest Drive, Hampton, NH 038452 or to St. James Masonic Lodge, c/o Andrew Hirst, 5 Wayside Drive, Exeter NH 03833-4821.
