Irene M. Grochmal

DURHAM - Irene M. Grochmal. 83, of Packers Falls Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at SunBridge of Exeter, after a period of failing health.

She was born June 11, 1919, in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of James L. and Mary (Parks) Phalen. She had resided on Nichols Avenue in Newmarket for many years before moving to Durham in 1968.

Mrs. Grochmal worked at the Macallen Company in Newmarket.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bernard Grochmal of Durham; two sons, Bernard Grochmal Jr. of Novato, Calif., and James Grochmal and his wife Deborah of Newmarket; one daughter and her husband, Joyce and Edgar Moisan of Pittsburg; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Leona Batchelder of Nottingham, Audrey Cameron of Pennsylvania and Janet Doherty of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, with the Rev. David Wuori officiating. Spring burial will be in Lee Hill Cemetery, Lee.

Wilbur Ellsworth

KENSINGTON - Wilbur Fiske "Willie" Ellsworth, 73, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at his home.

He was born Nov. 19, 1929, in Ipswich, Mass.

Mr. Ellsworth served in the farming industry for more than 55 years. He was the founder and owner of Green View Landscaping and Excavation and with his wife dedicated more than 20 years to the company. He served as the Rockingham County Farm Manager for 13 years.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Bonita (Seavey) Ellsworth of Kensington; two sons, Mark Ellsworth of Brentwood and Walter Ellsworth of Rochester; three daughters, Linda Smith of Rochester, Michelle (Aucoin) Regna of Ingleside, Ill., and Rebecca (Aucoin) Smith of Kensington; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Ellsworth of Burlington, Mass.; one sister, Helen Buckley of Raymond; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Spring burial will be in Village Cemetery, Kensington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Dorothy I. Kraus

EXETER - Dorothy I. Kraus, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Exeter Healthcare.

She was born in Ireland the daughter of the late James M. and Anna (Elliot) Guy and came to the United States in 1922. She had resided in Exeter since 1977.

She was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

Mr. Kraus taught at Belmont (Mass.) Day School for 25 years, retiring in 1977.

She was a member of Exeter Congregational Church; the Day Lilly and Hosta Societies; and the Exeter Garden Club.

The widow of George Kraus, who died in 1988, she is survived by one nephew, Roger Plaisted of Lexington, Mass.; and one niece, Susanne Lamb of Allen Park, Mich.

She was predeceased by one sister, Violet Plaisted.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. in Exeter Congregational Church, 21 Front St., Exeter.

Memorial donations may be made to the Children's Branch of Exeter Public Library, Chestnut St., Exeter, NH 03833 or to the N.H. SPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Helen M. Meister

DERRY - Helen M. (Dailey) Meister, 71, of Beaver Lake Lodge, North Shore Road, died Jan. 28, 2003, in Parkland Medical Center, Derry.

She was born May 22, 1931, in Malden, Mass., the daughter of Oliver and Helen (McLean) Dailey. She had resided in Hampstead for 10 years and in Derry for six years.

She was a graduate of Boston University.

Mrs. Meister was a civilian employee with the Army Reserve and was stationed overseas for five years.

The widow of Albert R. Meister, who died in 1990, she is survived by one daughter and her husband, Helen and Tom Phoenix of Stratham; two granddaughters; one brother, Buzzy Dailey of Malden; three sisters, Dottie McDonald of Hull, Mass., Rose Harris of Flint, Mich., and Paula Dailey of Lauderdale By The Sea, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 1 p.m. in St. Michael Church, Front Street, Exeter. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in Malden, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to CLM Behavioral Health, for Beaver Lake Lodge, 38 North Shore Road, Derry, NH 03038.

Assistance with the arrangements was by the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket.

Marjorie R. Odell

EXETER - Marjorie Rahmann Odell, 89, of RiverWoods, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at her home.

She was born Sept. 27, 1913, in Summit, N.J., the daughter of Arthur H. and Marjorie (Bailey) Rahmann. She had resided in Greenwich Village, N.Y., Washington, D.C., Menham, N.J., Manchester-by-the Sea, Shirley Center and Amesbury, Mass., before moving to Exeter in 1994.

She attended Kent Place School, Wellesley College and Katherine Gibbs Academy.

As a professional woman in the 1930s she was asked to take charge of marketing of an innovative medical service for families - a precursor of today's health insurance and HMO programs that was fought and killed by the AMA at that time.

Mrs. Odell was a private secretary for a vice president of National City Bank in New York City.

She enjoyed sailing and was an avid tennis player well into her 80s. She enjoyed reading, skiing, hiking, traveling, gardening, jazz and dancing.

She was a founder of the "Beyond War" initiative in New England; served as chairman of the Finance Committee for the town of Shirley; was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Amesbury; a volunteer for the Haverhill Council on Aging; and a supporter of her husband through their restoration and preservation of Lowell's Boat Shop on the Merrimack River in Amesbury.

Mrs. Odell was a pianist, organist and accomplished cook.

She was an outspoken and tireless advocate for women and women's rights. As a young girl at a preschool in Summit, N.J., she organized her classmates to fight for equal access right to the playground. In the 1950s she helped low-income women in Cape Ann communities obtain family planning services. She continued to have a keen interest in the advancement of women globally after her retirement at RiverWoods providing personal encouragement and financial support to the Pact/Worth women's literacy and empowerment programs in poor countries.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Malcolm J. Odell; one daughter, Susan Odell Hand of Wellesley; two sons, Malcolm Odell Jr. of South Hampton and George Odell of Newburyport, Mass.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Christ Church Episcopal, Exeter. Burial and a memorial celebration will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Marjorie R. Odell Worth Women's Fund, Pact Worth Initiative, Suite 350, 1200 18th St., N.W., Washington, DC 20036.

Samuel B. Scaggs

VENICE, Fla. - Samuel Bruce Scaggs, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003,

He was born May 21, 1925, in Cambria Va., and had resided in Venice for 10 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Scaggs began his publishing career with the Hampton Union before being employed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C., where he retired as a deputy public printer after 36 years of service.

He was a member of the Plantation Golf and Country Club, Venice; a 56-year member of the Hampton American Legion Post No. 35; and a 32nd degree mason in the Kena Temple Shrine in Fairfax, Va.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marion Allen Scaggs of Venice; two sons, Charles Scaggs of Sterling, Va., and Alan Scaggs of Ashburn, Va.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Scaggs of Christiansburg, Va.; two sisters, Mary Ellen Winn of Christiansburg and Lucy Tidwell of Artesia, N.M.

Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Memorial donations to Dattoli Cancer Foundation, 2803 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, FL 34237.

Arrangements were by the Farley Funeral Home and Crematory, Venice.

Betty Ann Yuskiewicz

HAMPTON FALLS - Betty Ann Yuskiewicz, 73, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, in Palo Alto, Calif. while visiting her children for the holidays.

She was born in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of the late John Daniel Rhodes and Mary O’Reilly Lonergan. She was a resident of Hampton Falls for 36 years.

Mrs. Yuskiewicz was the functions director at Seabrook Greyhound Park. She had worked for Seabrook Greyhound for 23 years.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Edward J. Yuskiewicz; six children, Susan Keenan Sweeney of Chadds Ford, Pa., Paula Anne Yuskiewicz of Concord, Calif., Edward J. Yuskiewicz, Jr. of Del Mar, Calif., Kim Marie Yuskiewicz and Lisa Jean Yuskiewicz., both of Vista, Calif., and Marcia Jane Yuskiewicz of Portsmouth; four grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren;

She was predeceased by one sister, Shirley A. Cadrin.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday in Concord, Calif. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9, at noon in the Granite Room, Seabrook Greyhound Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Marion B. Avery

EXETER - Marion Baker Avery, 85, of Camelot Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at the Colonial Poplin Nursing Home, Fremont.

She was born Sept. 6, 1917, in East Kingston, the daughter of the late Frederick G. and Helen May (Cilley) Baker Jr. and had resided in Exeter for 10 years. She had resided on Depot Road in East Kingston for many years.

Mr. Avery was the deputy clerk for Rockingham County Superior Court, retiring after 23 years of service.

She was a former member of East Kingston Methodist Church; a former member of Order of the Eastern Star, Esther Corinthian Lodge of East Kingston; the Rebekahs; and East Kingston Grange.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Ann and Herb Clark of West Nottingham; one son and his wife, Philip and Chlora Avery of Almont, Mich., five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, George Baker of East Kingston; one sister, Ruth Palmer of East Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one great-grandson, Philip G. Avery Jr.

Spring graveside services will be held in Plains Cemetery, Kingston.

Memorial donations may be made to Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Anne Gray

EXETER -Anne "Omi" Gray, 93, formerly of 17 Hampton Road, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Langdon Place of Exeter.

She was born May 18, 1909, in Hechingen, Germany, the daughter of Carl and Jeanette (Gift) Loewengard and was a holocaust survivor.

Mrs. Gray was a gifted artist and was self-employed in that field.

The widow of Joseph A. Gray, she is survived by one daughter, Kathi and her husband, Maurice of Exeter; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; and one nephew.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833
