Audrey M. Durant

STRATHAM - Audrey M. Durant, 82, of 16 Bunker Hill Ave., died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Exeter Healthcare.

She was born Sept. 17, 1920, in West Newbury, Mass., the daughter of the late John B. and Lola B. (Henderson) Swap.

She was a 1938 graduate of West Newbury High School.

Mrs. Durant was employed by the former Ruth Shoe in Newburyport, Mass., Exeter Hospital dietary department, Mrs. G’s Grocery in Exeter, Higgins Ice Cream, A& P in Exeter, Exeter AREA High School lunch program and Woolworth’s, and did alterations in her home.

She was a member of Stratham Community Church and a member of the Women’s Guild and was the former volunteer coordinator for the Clothes Attic of the church. She was a member of the Second Congregational Church of West Newbury.

She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of American Legion Post 2181 of Exeter; the 29th Infantry Division Auxiliary; the 69th Infantry Division Auxiliary; and the Stratham 76ers.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Hollis A. Durant; two sons, John H. Durant of North Hampton and Hollis A. Durant Jr. of Stratham; three daughters, Ellen A. Cole of Greenland, Alicia C. Smith of Hammond, Wis., and Joyce L. Goodwin of Exeter; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Stratham Community Church, Stratham. Spring burial will be in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833 or to Stratham Community Church, 10 Emery Lane, Stratham, NH 03885.

Patricia A. Noel-Hodgen

EXETER - Patricia A. Noel-Hodgen, 51, of 6 Heritage Way, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at her home.

She was born Sept. 14, 1951, in Exeter, the daughter of Alma R. (Plante) Hall of Exeter and the late Robert S. Hall.

She was a graduate of Exeter High School and attended New Hampshire College, Portsmouth.

Mrs. Hodgen was a software consultant at Liberty Mutual in Portsmouth for 23 years.

She was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter; a member of the social committee of the church; and a member of the Exeter High School Football Boosters Club.

She enjoyed golfing, the ocean and her home.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 20 years, Peter J. Hodgen of Exeter; one son and his wife, Michael S. and Jennifer Noel of Pepperell, Mass., one daughter and her husband, Terri Noel Ash and Thomas Ash of Charlotte, N.C.; one grandson; one brother, Robert L. Hall of Kensington; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Front Street, Exeter. Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA/Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Joan M. Leva

FREMONT - Joan M. Leva, 48, of 24 South Road, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at her home.

She was born March 24, 1954, in Salem, Mass., the daughter of Arlene (Baker) Fontaine of Beverly, Mass., and the late Everett O. Fontaine. She resided in Beverly, Mass., for several years and in Fremont for 12 years.

She was a graduate of Beverly High School and attended North Shore Community College in Beverly.

Mrs. Leva was a manager at Wal-Mart in Plaistow. She was previously the owner and operator of Hair Etc. in Beverly.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, quilting and working with stained glass.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 25 years, John W. Leva of Fremont; two sons, Jonathan J. Leva and Nicholas R. Leva, both of Fremont; one brother, Paul Fontaine of Topsfield, Mass.; three sisters, Sheila Parker of Hamilton, Mass., Arlene Thompson of Salem, Mass., and Pauline Vibert of Epping; many nephews and one aunt.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Everett Fontaine and Richard Fontaine.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 p.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rockingham VNA/Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Barbara G. Stevenson

EXETER - Barbara Gerrish Stevenson, 91, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Eventide Home.

She was born Jan. 3, 1912, in Melrose, Mass., the daughter of the late Elmer G. and Amy (Fernald) Gerrish. She retired to Randolph Center, Vt., in 1969, moving to Newmarket in 1999 and to Exeter in 2002.

Mrs. Stevenson was a member of the First Congregational Church of Randolph Center and was active in the Randolph Garden Club and Gifford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Corporators and elected to the Gifford Hospital Board of Trustees in 1982 serving until 1985.

The widow of John B. Stevenson, who died in 1982, She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Beverly and George Seldon of Boston and Amy and Joseph L. Ross of Stratham; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Grenville Gerrish and Winslow Gerrish.

Interment in the Randolph Center Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Joseph A. Tardiff

EXETER - Joseph A. Tardiff, 88, of 277 Water St., died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood.

He was born June 1, 1914, in Exeter, the son of the late Joseph and Emma (Tremblay) Tardiff.

He was a 1932 graduate of Exeter High School, a 1933 graduate of Phillips Andover Academy and a 1937 graduate of Dartmouth College.

Mr. Tardiff worked his whole career with Hooker Chemical Corp., now a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corp., first as a production chemist at the Niagara Falls plant and last as the manager of a new plant in Belgium. He retired in 1969.

He was an avid hiker, completing the Apalachian Trail in 1983 and climbing all 4000-foot peaks in New England.

He was an active member of several Unitarian-Universalist churches for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his wife, Olive (Richards) Tardiff of Exeter; two sons and their wives, Robert and Marjorie Tardiff of St. Joseph, Mi., and J. Herbert and Lee Ellen Tardiff of Auburn; one daughter and her husband, Nancy and Richard Tavernier of Acton, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Emma Dufour or Exeter; and many nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rockingham County Nursing Home, 117 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Aili E. Helander

EPPING - Aili E. Helander, 91, of Exeter Road, died Monday, March 3, 2003, in Warner, after a period of failing health.

She was born April 25, 1911, in Fitchburg, Mass., the daughter of the late Leaneles and Liisa (Loukola) Holm and had resided in Epping since the mid 1970s.

She was educated in Fitchburg schools.

Mrs. Helander was a member of the Emissaries of the Divine Light in Epping.

The widow of George Helander, she is survived by a friend, Michael Winn of Epping, and friends at the Pines of Newmarket.

There are no calling hours.

Graveside services will be held in Green Pastures Cemetery, Epping, in the spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Emissaries of the Divine Light, 5569 North County Road, No. 29, Loveland, CO 80538.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

Dr. Harry I. Klein

EXETER - Dr. Harry I. Klein, 54, died Monday, March 3, 2003, at SunBridge of Exeter following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. the son of the late Andrew and Sara (Samson) Klein, and was raised Elmont, N.Y.

He graduated from Valley Stream North High School, he attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he was active in student government and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1971 with a bachelor of arts degree in English.

Following a year in California, where he worked with troubled youths in a halfway house, Dr. Klein moved to the Boston area and became a teacher of autistic children. He earned his Ph.D., in Clinical Psychology at Columbia University’s Teachers College, writing his dissertation on primary prevention in mental health.

Dr. Klein worked for many years as a therapist at Seacoast Mental Health Center in Portsmouth and Exeter, conducting individual and group therapy sessions with adults. He taught introductory psychology courses at the University of New Hampshire and at Rutgers University. Dr. Klein established a private practice as a clinical psychologist in Exeter in 1990.

In addition to his work as a therapist, Dr. Klein served on the Exeter School Budget Committee and the Temple Israel Education Committee. He was a member of the American Psychological Association and the N.H. Psychological Association, and he was an active member of Temple Israel in Portsmouth.

He enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Fran Berman of Exeter; one son, Geoffrey W. Klein of Exeter; and one daughter, Dara E. Klein, of Exeter

Funeral services were held Thursday in Temple Israel, Portsmouth. Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery.

Arrangements were by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home -Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth.

Albert A. Almester

RYE - Albert A. Almester, 88, of 191 Parsons Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Seacoast Health Center.

He was born Nov. 2, 1914, in Rossford, Ohio, the son of the late Alfred J. and Clara (Sambre) Almester and had resided in Rye since 1991 coming from Toledo, Ohio.

He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933 and was a U.S. Army Air Corps and Air Force veteran of World War II serving as a master sergeant from 1940 until 1948 with the 462nd and 770th Bomb Group.

He was the recipient of five Bronze Stars and the Air Medal for air combat missions in Burma, China and the air offensive over Japan. After the war he served with the U.S. Air Force 10th Rescue Squadron in Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Mr. Almester was the warehouse manager for the Williams & Company division of Superior Group, a sheet metal distributor in Toledo. Since moving to Rye, he enjoyed meeting the boys for breakfast each morning at Goldie’s or McDonald’s.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley (Wyatt) Almester of Rye; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Ruth M. Colman

HAMPTON - Ruth M. Colman, 89, of 162 Little River Road, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Seacoast Health Center.

She was born Oct. 14, 1913, in Lawrence, Mass., the daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (Cooper) Allen and had resided in Hampton since 1954 coming from Methuen, Mass.

Mrs. Colman was a mender for the former Pacific Mills in Lawrence.

She was a member of Hampton United Methodist Church and the Hampton Senior Citizens.

The widow of J. Gordon Colman who died in 1977, she is survived by two sons, Gordon A. Colman and Robert E. Colman, both of Hampton; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. in Hampton United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Memorial donations may be made to the Hampton United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton, N.H. 03842.
