Shirley Ann Cail

EXETER - Shirley Ann Cail, 66, of Lee’s Mobile Home Park No. 11, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at her home after a sudden illness.

She was born Jan. 27, 1937, in Exeter, the daughter of Joseph and Etta (McInnis) St. Amour and was a lifelong Exeter resident.

She attended Robinson Female Seminary and later entered the Exeter School of Practical Nursing and was licensed as a practicing nurse in 1965.

Mrs. Cail provided care and comfort to the Seacoast’s elderly, serving for more than 30 years as a practicing nurse at several area nursing homes including Rockingham County Nursing Home, Exeter Healthcare, Riverwoods, and most recently, the Eventide Home.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, movies and cooking for her family. She was a lung cancer survivor.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Exeter.

She is survived by three sons, Joseph J. Cail of Raymond, David R. Cail of Newfields and Paul A. Cail of North Conway; two daughters, Kim E. Cail of Newfields and Diann M. Chaffin of Stratham; 10 grandchildren; and eight brothers and sisters.

Memorial services will be held at Friday at 11 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Exeter.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

John R. Cloutman

LAKELAND, Fla. - John Ralph Cloutman, 77, formerly of Exeter, died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at The Meadowview Life Center in Lakeland, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born July 13, 1925, in Dover son of the late John C. and Lena (King) Cloutman.

He was a graduate of Dover High School and McIntosh College.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Corps of Engineers in the Philippines.

Mr. Cloutman was graphics illustrator at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for more than twenty-five years.

He was a charter member of the American Baptist Church of Lakeland; a life member of Star in the East Lodge F&AM No. 59, of Exeter; Scottish Rite, Valley of Tampa; Bektash Shrine Center; Order of the Eastern Star, Lakeland No. 26; Order of Amaranth, Kathleen Court No. 46; and a member of the Lakeland Shrine Clown Unit.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy (Bailey) Cloutman of Lakeland; one son, Seth J. Cloutman of Australia; two daughters, Sarah C. Gebo and her husband Mark of Stratham and Beth D. French, Barrington; and one granddaughter.

A memorial service was held at the American Baptist Church of Lakeland on Monday, April 28,

Phyllis H. Cramer

RYE - Phyllis Hayes Cramer died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, Webster at Rye.

She was born April 5, 1911, in Fitchburg, Mass., and had resided in Georgetown, Mass., and enjoyed her summers traveling between her homes in Lempster and Maidstone Lake, Vt. She spent her winters in Kissimmee, Fla.

She was educated in Newton, Mass., schools.

Mrs. Cramer enjoyed spending time with her family, birdwatching, boating, scenic car rides, crossword puzzles and auctions.

The widow of Hermann T. Cramer, she is survived by two sons and their wives, Bruce H. and Muriel Cramer of Nashua and Lance E. and Patricia Cramer of Rye; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Harkness of Peterborough and Priscilla Heslam of Macon, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Gwendolyn H. Smith and Eleanor H. Lipps.

A prayer service was held Thursday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Private burial will be in Central Cemetery, Rye.

Memorial donations may be made to the Webster at Rye Resident’s Fund, 795 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870 or to the Lawrence Boy’s and Girl’s Club, 136 Water St., Lawrence, MA 01841.

Mary-Elizabeth Cray

MADERA, Calif. - Mary-Elizabeth (Wing) Cray, 83, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at her home.

She was raised in Fairhaven Mass., and resided in Mattapoisett, Mass., moving to California in 1972.

She was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, attended Lasalle Junior College and was a graduate of the Fanny Farmer School of Cookery.

Mrs. Cray was a homemaker and had worked at several restaurants on Cape Cod and in the Fairhaven area.

She enjoyed many Shrine activities and traveling.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Herbert Cray of Madera; two sons and their wives, Clifton and Sandra Cray of Epping, and Terrance and Ann Cray of Bristol, Pa.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

She was predeceased by one son, Wayne Cray.

At Mrs. Cray’s request, there are no visiting hours or services.

Arrangements are by the Neptune Society of Central California, Fresno.

Richard T. Goss

HAMPTON - Richard T. Goss, 79, of 4 Tobey St., died Monday, May 19, 2003, in York Hospital, York, Maine, after a sudden illness.

He was born April 12, 1924, in Stoneham, Mass., the son of the late Percy W. and Josephine (Smith) Goss. He was raised in Medford, Mass., and had lived in Hampton since 1958.

He was a graduate of Medford High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 34th Infantry Division and was the recipient of the Bronze Star.

Mr. Goss was a truck driver for the U.S. Postal Service in Boston for 45 years and was awarded the Million-Mile Award for safe driving.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton.

He was a pilot and based his planes, a Piper J3 Cub and a Cessna 152 II at Hampton Airfield for many years. He was a former member of the Civil Air Patrol and was devoted to his family.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean A. (Olson) Goss of Hampton; one son, Richard T. Goss Jr. of Candia; one daughter and her husband Karen E. and John Ranes of Sanford, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at noon in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, No. Canton, OH 44720.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Aili E. Helander

EPPING - Graveside services for Aili E. Helander will be held Thursday, May 29, at 3 p.m. in Green Pastures Cemetery, Epping.

Mrs. Helander died March 3, 2003, in Warner after a period of failing health.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Emissaries of the Divine Light, 5569 North County Road, No. 29, Loveland, CO 80538.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

Constance C. Matheson

EXETER - Memorial services for Constance C. Matheson will be held Saturday, May 31, at 10 a.m. in Exeter Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Magee officiating. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall at the church.

Miss Matheson, 81, of Hayes Park, died May 1, 2003, in Haverhill, Mass., after a period of failing health.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Arthur R. Pool

RAYMOND - Arthur R. "Dutchie" Pool, 76, of 72 Main St., died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1926, in Lynn, Mass., the son of the late Frank H. and Grace M. (Lucien) Pool. He moved to Newton in 1960 and resided in Kingston for many years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Pool owned and operated Art Pool Construction Co. for many years.

He was a member of Gideon Lodge No. 84, F. & A.M. of Kingston and enjoyed working on and restoring old tractors and bulldozers.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne (O’Brien) Pool of Raymond; one son, Charles R. Pool of Florida; two daughters, Cynthia A. Adams and her husband Leon of Kingston and Kathy J. Heath of Maine; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; one stepson, Robert M. O’Brien of Maine; four stepdaughters, Joan J. McCarthy of Exeter, Carolyn A. Anderson of Raymond, Hope Tuttle of Nottingham, and Kolleen Richards of Vermont.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Joan D. (Blatchford) Pool.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter.

Services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Kingston.

Walter N. Smith

SEABROOK - Walter N. Smith, 86, of 47 Mapleridge Road, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born June 1, 1916, in Waltham, Mass., the son of the late William W. and Ethel G. (Neal) Smith and had resided in Seabrook for 41 years.

He was a graduate of Waltham High School and served with the Massachusetts National Guard during World War II.

Mr. Smith was a machinist for the Raytheon Corp., in Wayland, Mass.

He was an active member, deacon and trustee of Trinity United Church in Seabrook and served as a member of the Seabrook Zoning Board of Adjustments and was an auxiliary police officer in Seabrook. He was active with the Seabrook Community Center where he regularly called bingo. He was a member of St. James Lodge No. 102, F. & A.M.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rosemarie (Tomaino) Smith of Seabrook; one son, Alvin Smith of Clinton, Mass.; two daughters, Joan Smith and Donna Swatz, both of Maynard, Mass.; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three sons, Neal Smith, Thomas Smith and William Smith; and by one brother, Herbert Smith.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 3 to 5 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Masonic services will be conducted at 6:45 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Trinity United Church, Lafayette Road, Seabrook. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook.

Rev. Dr. Elizabeth J. Walton

SEABROOK - Rev. Dr. Elizabeth J. Walton, 70, of Farm Lane, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Newport, Vt., the daughter of the late Rev. Howard and Margaret (Mabie) Walton. She resided in Lisbon for seven years and moved to Attleboro, Mass., in 1941.

She attended Joseph Finberg Elementary School and was a 1951 graduate of Attleboro High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in theology from the New England School of Theology, Brookline, Mass., in 1957. She received her master’s degree in theology in 1972 and her doctorate of theology in 1976 from Clarkville Seminary, Clarkville, Tenn.

Rev. Dr. Walton was ordained to the ministry by the New Hampshire Advent Christian Conference in 1958 in Advent Christian Church, Seabrook, where her grandfather, the Rev. Arthur E. Walton was ordained in 1903.

A third generation of ordained ministers, she was serving as pastor of Four Corners Advent Christian Church in Seabrook and had previously served the church as pastor from 1957 until 1970. She was pastor of First Parish Community Church in West Newbury, Mass., from 1970 until 1981 and hosted a radio program during the 1970s known as "Moments of Meditation" from WNBP in Newburyport, Mass.

Since 1982, Rev. Walton has been active with Rand Memorial Church, Seabrook, serving as music minister and organist, interim pastor and was a former deaconess. Over the years she has officiated at many funerals, weddings and has served Seabrook residents in many ways.

She was an accomplished poet and wrote and published several books of poetry and the biography of her grandparents. She had a love for music and was an accomplished organist and pianist. She began playing in Hebron Methodist Church in Attleboro as an organist at age 15 and continued until entering college in 1953. She was an avid student of British, Canadian and U.S. history.

She is survived by many cousins.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 3 to 5 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. in Rand Memorial Church, South Main St., Seabrook. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook.

Memorial donations may be made to Four Corners Advent Christian Church, 5 Farm Lane, Seabrook, NH 03874, or to Rand Congregational Church, 134 South Main St., Seabrook, NH 03874.
