Alfred Joseph Bishop

HAMPTON - Alfred Joseph Bishop, 66, of 4 P Street, Hampton Beach, and formerly of Manchester and Methuen, Mass., died March 29, 2003 at his residence.

He was born Dec. 18, 1936 in Lawrence, Mass., the son of the late Frederick J. and Rose (Lemay) Bishop. Residing in the Merrimack Valley for most of his life, he was educated in the Lawrence school system.

As a young man, he held a number of jobs working as both a short order cook and a handy man throughout the Greater Lawrence area. He made his career as an electrician working with the Merrimack Paper Company for 41 years, retiring in May 2002.

Mr. Bishop enjoyed living at the beach, fishing, many sports, and cooking. He was devoted to his family and friends. Most recently, he helped his brother at his seasonal fried dough business at Hampton Beach.

A communicant of St. Augustine Church in Lawrence, he attended Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton.

He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Bouchard of Methuen; his sons, James G. Bishop and his wife Christine of Hooksett, Gregory Annaloro of New York, and Michael Annaloro of Boston; three brothers, Edward Bishop of Hampton and Kissimee, Fla., Richard T. Bishop of Lawrence, Mass., and Roland Bishop of Conway; one sister, Patricia Manning of Conway; one granddaughter; his former wife, Dorothy (French) Bishop of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Joan Buccanan.

There will be no visiting hours. There will be a Memorial Mass Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 124 Ames St., Lawrence, Mass. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to My Greatest Dream, 727 Lafayette Road, Seabrook 03874.

Arrangements are by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, Hampton.

Arthur W. Delande

DANVERS, Mass. - Arthur W. Delande, 74, of 9 Sheffield Road, Danvers, Mass., and Fort Myers, Fla., died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at his home.

He was born Nov. 13, 1928 in Salem, Mass., the son of the late Arthur and Alice Delande. He was raised and educated in Salem and attended Boston University.

Mr. Delande was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II.

He was a successful businessman in Salem and Peabody, Mass. He was the retired chief executive officer and president of Delande Supply Company Inc. and trustee of Sheffield Realty Trust.

Mr. Delande was a member of The Over 70-Ski-Club and The Gateway Golf and Country Club in Fort Myers. He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus. He belonged to the Rotary Club and to the Salem and Peabody Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of The National Association of Electrical Distributors and a past director of Shawmut Bank. As a licensed pilot, he was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

He enjoyed skiing and golf.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Louise H. Delande; four children, David Delande of Merrimac, Mass., Lee McMath and her husband John of Hampton Falls, Susan Kelley of Hampton, and Richard Delande and his wife Pamela of Newburyport; a brother, Richard Delande of Marblehead, Mass; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Delande of Danvers and a sister, Barbara Doyle of Seabrook.

A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, April 8 at 9 a.m. at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, Conant St., Danvers. A private burial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, 5 Federal St., Danvers, Mass. 01923 or to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, Mass. 01923.

Arrangements are by Mackey Funeral Home, Danvers.

Leon L. Sicard

HAMPTON - Leon L. Sicard, 76, of Hampton, died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

He was born Jan. 15, 1927 in Amesbury, Mass., the son of the late Harvey and Beatrice (Payette) Sicard.

Mr. Sicard graduated Amesbury High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He moved to Hampton in 1950 and in 1954 was the co-founder of Palmer & Sicard, a well-known HVAC company with the late Arnold "Bud" Palmer. He also worked as a contractor and developed many parcels of land in Hampton including Seabury Condominiums, Tide Mill Condominiums, Palmer & Sicard Streets, and Taylor River Estates. He was also involved in developing the student housing at Plymouth State College and Holmgren Estates in Stratham.

Mr. Sicard was a member of the Associated Builders & Contractors Association, American Legion Post 32 of Exeter, and was a member of the former B.P.O.E. in Hampton.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eleanor V. (Main) Sicard; three sons, Edward L. Sicard and his wife Gail of Hampton, James R. Sicard and his wife Bonnie of Beverton, Oregon, and Paul D. Sicard and his wife Jeanne of Hampton Falls; one daughter, Jamie Langton and her husband Steve of Hampton; one brother, Philip Sicard of Hampton Falls; two sisters, Elva Fogg of California and Jean Kutzko Berthelette of Fayville, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. There will be no funeral service.

If desired, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Louis D’Amico

NORTH HAMPTON - Louis D’Amico, 86, of 2 Squier Drive, died Monday, April 7, 2003 at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born Jan. 20, 1917 in Waterbury, Conn., the son of the late Joseph and Assunta (Iamelli) D’Amico.

In 1922 at the age of 5, his family returned to their native country, Italy, where he lived for 10 years before returning to the United States in 1932. He resided in North Hampton since 1999, coming from Concord, Mass., where he lived for 20 years, and before that he lived in Lexington, Mass.

Mr. D’Amico was educated in the design of men’s clothing and a career ensued for more than 40 years. For the last 18 years of his career, he was employed with Southwick Clothing, a design and manufacturing company in Lawrence, Mass., retiring in 1981. He was a member of the International Association of Clothing Designers.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Giordano) D’Amico; one son, Dr. Joseph A. D’Amico and his wife Zabelle of Holden, Mass.; two daughters, Suzanne Berstein and her husband Dr. Irving Berstein of Lexington, Mass., and Vivian Robillard and her husband Lawrence of Westwood, Mass.; one sister, Antoinette Morrone of Waterbury, Conn.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. D’Amico was predeceased by his first wife, Julia (Leone) D’Amico; two brothers, John and Anthony; and one sister, Mary Grosso.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Burial will be in the Westview Cemetery, Lexington, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 613, Annapolis, Md. 21404.

Phyllis A. Swanson

EXETER - Phyllis A. Swanson, 70, of Exeter, died Monday, April 7, 2003 at the Exeter Healthcare Inc.

She is survived by her companion of many years, Carl T. Farneth of Exeter; one son, Andy Swanson of Exeter; two daughters, Rebecca L. Swanson and Pek Wan Swanson, both of Exeter; one brother, William Ayer of Nashua; two sisters, Mildred Gifford of Westford, Mass., and Lucille Dumont of Dunstable, Mass.; a son-in-law, Ron Meegan of Exeter; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Exeter United Methodist Church, 307 Epping Road, Exeter. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery.

Flowers are acceptable. If desired, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Virginia G. Clark

EXETER - Virginia G. Clark, 89, of Michael Avenue, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 18, 1913, in Manchester, the daughter of the late George and Ava (Dorr) Goodwin.

Mrs. Clark had resided in Exeter since 1967. She formerly lived in Candia and New Jersey.

She was a member of the Exeter Presbyterian Church and the Daughters of Scotia Women’s Auxiliary in Manchester.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Glenna McLaughlin, Linda Mathes, and Richard Clark Jr., all of Virginia; one sister, Barbara Howell of Auburn; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Clark was predeceased by her husband, Hendry Hendry J. Clark and her son, Richard Clark.

A calling hour will be held Friday, April 4 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, with funeral services at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Steven Magee will officiate. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rockingham County Nursing Home, 117 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833.

Lila H. Bonis

FREMONT - Lila H. Bonis, 85, of Main Street, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 13, 1918, in Dover, the daughter of the late Max W. and Freda M. (Amundsen) Leighton.

Mrs. Bonis grew up in Dover where she graduated from the local high school. She attended both McIntosh Business College and the New York Institute of Photography. She had been a resident of Fremont since 1952.

In 1943 she enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps and served as a corporal from 1943 to 1945. She served in the South Pacific and later became a member of the American Legion Post of Deerfield.

She worked as a budget analyst at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard both before and after World War II.

In 1952 she resigned her post after her marriage to Joseph C. Bonis, who passed away in 1976.

She enjoyed photography, gardening, and bird watching.

Mrs. Bonis is survived by one son, Stan Bonis of Newmarket; two daughters, Bonnie Bonis of Florence, Italy, and L. Jean Bonis of Londonderry; one brother, Otto Leighton of Dover; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 8 at 11 a.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. The Rev. Brad Greely will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Raymond.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Audubon Society of New Hampshire, 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord, NH 03301.

Edward Allan Pinsley

NEWMARKET - Edward Allan Pinsley, 75, died Friday, March 28, 2003, in Exeter.

He was born in Manhattan on the same day Charles Lindbergh was triumphantly parading down Fifth Avenue.

He was an engineering scientist, trained at the City College of New York and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He held a professional engineering license and in 1950 entered the employment of United Aircraft Corporation, which later became United Technologies Corporation. He was a pioneer in engineering physics and laser technology at the corporation’s research laboratories and lived in Glastonbury, Conn.

In 1968, Mr. Pinsley led the corporation’s investment at its Pratt & Whitney Aircraft division in West Palm Beach in the defense application of this new technology. Accomplishments of this major program were record-setting lasers that helped lay the groundwork for the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). In 1987, he was employed by Kaman Corporation in Bloomfield, Conn., as assistant director of research and development. He held many patents in his field and received a wide range of honors and awards. One of the highest honors accorded him was the prestigious United Technologies George Mead Gold medal, awarded annually for the single most outstanding engineering contribution throughout the corporation.

Mr. Pinsley was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy aboard a minesweeper.

A lover of the outdoors, he was also an active participant in the family blueberry businesses in the Berkshire Hills town of Blandford, Mass. Mr. Pinsley also enjoyed downhill skiing.

Mr. Pinsley and his wife Jane moved to Newmarket this past December. He fulfilled his retirement dream of returning to classroom studies and was enrolled in quantum mechanics and cosmology courses at the University of New Hampshire at the time of his death.

He was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist churches in North Palm Beach, Fla. and Hartford, Conn.

Mr. Pinsley is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jane (Kuznicki) Pinsley; two daughters, Melissa Hendrix and her husband William of Washington, D.C., and Judith Reich and her husband Mark of North Andover, Mass; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Pinsley, who died eight years ago.

Memorial contributions may be made to The White Church Preservation Fund, P.O. Box 35, Blandford, MA 01008.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Frederick J. McLachlan

HAMPTON - Frederick J. McLachlan, 65, of Verne Road died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at his home.

He was born March 3, 1938, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of the late Frederick J. and Enis J. (Galloni) McLachlan. He was a graduate of Lawrence High School and Northern Essex Community College.

Mr. McLachlan served as an Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 through 1958. He worked in the aerospace industry as a quality control engineer for RCA on NASA’s Lunar Module Project.

He volunteered his time working with the homeless and as a supporter of Lazarus House in Lawrence. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and fishing. He spent many hours conversing with the fishermen of the Yankee Fisherman’s Co-op in Seabrook. He also met regularly with his fellow retirees to share stories.

Mr. McLachlan is survived by his daughters, Mary Beth Taylor and her husband Tap of Greenland, and Kerry Bianco and her husband Anthony of Medford, Mass.; a son, Scott F. McLachlan and his wife Marijo of Malabar, Fla.; four grandchildren; two aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
