Margaret E. Beckman

EXETER - Margaret E. "Peg" Beckman, 94, of 8 Hampton Road, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation of Exeter.

She was born Aug. 13, 1908 in Providence, R.I., the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret (McCullagh) Gumley. She was a graduate of Lexington Grammar School and attended night school in Providence to earn her high school diploma.

Mrs. Beckman worked many years as an assembler for the Bostitch/Stanley Corporation of East Greenwich, R.I.

She visited in Hampton Falls for the past 30 years, moving there from East Greenwich in 1993, and subsequently moving to Exeter in 1999.

Mrs. Beckman is survived by a son, Stephen R. Beckman and his wife Phyllis of Scituate, R.I.; a daughter, Bonnie J. Sheets-Keller and her husband Gene of Hampton Falls; her daughter-in-law, Patricia Beckman of Winter Haven, Fla,; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm S. Beckman, who died in 1975; a son, Charles W. Beckman in 1995; a grandson, Teddy Sheets in 1996; and a brother, Thomas C. Gumley in 1961.

Services were held Thursday, and burial will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Highland Memorial Park, 1 Rhode Island Ave., Johnston, R.I.

If desired, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Carroll B. Ronco

BAR MILLS, Maine - Carroll B. Ronco, 88, the husband of Muriel M. Ronco, died on March 31, 2003, in Exeter.

He was born in North New Portland, Maine, a son of Carl A. and Merle Moulton Ronco, and attended local schools. He graduated from Gorham State Teacher’s College in 1938, and received his master’s degree in education from University of Maine in 1955. He completed courses at the University of Connecticut, and at Columbia University.

His 35 years in education included classroom teaching in Alfred and Seal Harbor, Maine, and in Unionville, Conn. He was principal of Mt. Desert High School at Somesville, Maine, from 1942-1943, where he became a member of Mt. Desert Lodge #140 F&AM. He next was principal of Pemetic High School at Southwest Harbor, Maine, for the period of 1943-1948. He then became superintendent of schools for School Union No. 103, in Lubec, Maine, then being the youngest superintendent in the state. Here he belonged to the Lubec Grange, the local Chamber of Commerce, and was president of the Men’s Fellowship of the Christian Congregation Church. In 1954 he became superintendent of School Union No. 9 in Cornish, Maine, where he was a member of the Kezar Falls Kiwanis Club.

He became superintendent of the newly formed SAD 6 in Buxton, Maine, where he oversaw the organization of the new district, and the development of the original Bonny Eagle High School, which opened in September 1961. In 1966, he became superintendant of SAD 57 in Waterboro, Maine, where he again managed the development of the district, and of Massabesic High School. Upon his retirement from education in 1972, the football field at Massabesic was named Ronco Field in his honor.

Professional memberships included the American Association of School Administrators, the National Education Association, the Maine School Superintendents Association, and the Maine Teachers Association. From 1955 through 1961 he was consecutively secretary-treasurer, vice president, president elect, and president of the Maine School Superintendents Association. He had previously served as president of the Washington County Teachers Association, and of the York County Teachers Association.

He was active in hunting, fishing, and boating, and nurtured a large garden. He said he loved watching plants grow and mature. As a fisherman, he tied his own flies and streamers.

Surviving are two sons, Carl L. Ronco and Glen W. Ronco, both of New Hampshire, where he resided for the last several years, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at the Dennett-Craig & Pate Funeral Home, routes 202 and 4A in Bar Mills. Burial will be in the spring at South Buxton Cemetery, located behind the Tory Hill Congregational Church in Bar Mills.

Pamela Jean Kaufman

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Pamela Jean Kaufman, 52, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

She earned a master of science degree from Dartmouth College and was employed by the University of Minnesota.

She spent many years among friends in New England, which she considered her home.

She is survived by her partner, Renee Sugrue; a niece and nephew, Amy and Christopher Harwick; and many friends.

Charles M. Clark

SEABROOK - Charles M. Clark, 83, of Seabrook Beach, and formerly of Methuen, Mass., passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2003, in Portsmouth.

He was born July 25, 1919 in Cambridge, Mass., the son of the late Charles P. and Martha (Westcott) Clark.

In December 1941 he left Boston University to enlist in the U.S. Marines. As a member of the 1st Marine Division, he was in the first wave of Marines on Guadalcanal. In November 1944 he was transferred to the 5th Marine Division and entered Japan as part of the Occupation.

He graduated Boston University in 1946, and received his master’s of education degree there in 1952.

Mr. Clark taught in Newmarket, Haverhill and Methuen, Mass. He was a coach, referee and served as director of physical education at the Jewish Community Centers in Haverhill and Lawrence, Mass. When he retired in 1980 he was principal of the Tenney Middle School in Methuen. He was elected to the Methuen Town Meeting, the Methuen School Committee and was a beach commissioner at Seabrook Beach.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Virginia (Watts) Clark in 1999.

Mr. Clark is survived by a son, Robert Clark and his wife, Janet, of Northwood; a daughter, Jane Hawkins and her husband, Rick, of Syracuse, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Deborah Watts of Hampton; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a nephew and two nieces.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence St., Methuen. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of one’s choice.

Robert E. Prescott Jr.

EXETER - Robert E. Prescott Jr., 87, of 50 Hampton Road, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born Feb. 14, 1916 in Quincy, Mass., the son of the late Robert E. and Clara L. (Webber) Prescott Sr.

Mr. Prescott was a graduate of Quincy High School and attended Lowell Institute. He moved to Exeter in 1953 where he started the R.E. Prescott Company, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of the Hampton Falls Baptist Church.

Mr. Prescott is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rose A. (Jutras) Prescott of Exeter; three sons, Robert E. Prescott III of Philadelphia, Perrin T. Prescott and his wife Phyllis of Exeter, and Russell E. Prescott and his wife Susan of Kingston; two daughters, Judy R. Ierna of Seminole, Fla., and Beverly A. Prescott of Redington Beach, Fla.; one sister, A. Roberta H. Krause of Hingham, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Ross Prescott and his sister, Clara Lou Buontempo.

Services were held at the Hampton Falls Baptist Church, and private burial was in the Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hampton Falls First Baptist Church, 3 Lincoln Ave., Hampton Falls 03844.

Arrangements were by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Suzanne R. Brockway

EXETER - Suzanne R. Brockway, 89, of 10 Wheelwright Ave., died March 27, 2003 at Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy illness.

She was born and educated in France, the daughter of the late Jean Raynaud and Ernestine Gibard. Before moving to Hampton 35 years ago, she lived in New York, England, South Dakota and Texas.

Mrs. Brockway was a volunteer with Fish and was a member of the Monday Club of Hampton.

She is survived by her daughter, Claude P. Maher of Exeter; three grandsons; one granddaughter; and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, the late Lt. Col. Robert K. Brockway.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday, March 29 at St. Michael Church in Exeter. Burial followed in the Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation of N.H. Inc., PO Box 44, Nashua 03061.

Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Silvio C. Cantelli

EXETER - Silvio C. Cantelli, 80, of 8 Hampton Road, died Friday, March 28, 2003 at SunBridge for Exeter.

He was born Feb. 15, 1923 in Boston, the son of the late Carlo and Maria (Giberti) Cantelli. He was raised in Somerville, Mass., where he was a 1944 graduate of Somerville High School. He had resided for many years in Cambridge, Mass., before moving to Exeter in 1999.

He worked as a factory clerk for Cambion Inc., a Cambridge electronics manufacturer.

Mr. Cantelli is survived by a son, Stephen C. Cantelli of Exeter; a sister, Rena A. Stahlman of Winchester, Mass.; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; and several cousins.

Services were held Monday and burial was in the Exeter Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton.

Edward Tracey Heckman

EXETER - Edward Tracey Heckman, 94, died March 30, 2003 at Exeter Hospital.

He was born April 26, 1908 in East Aurora, N.Y., the son of the late James Conrad Heckman and Ida Elinor (Johnson) Heckman. He resided in Newtonville, Mass., for 46 years before becoming a resident of Langdon Place, Exeter.

Mr. Heckman was a graduate of Lafayette College, Class of 1930 and Harvard Business School.

He worked for the Boston Woven Hose Co., the Raytheon Co. Power Tube Division, Waltham, Mass., and Fotobeam of Waltham.

He was a longtime member of Newtonville Methodist Church and served on the Norumbega Council of the Boy Scouts of America for many years and helped found Troop 49. He was a lifetime member of the Isaac Parker Masonic Lodge of Waltham, Mass. He enjoyed ham radio, reading, music, and photography.

The widower of Dorothy Lena (Johnson) Heckman, his wife of 56 years, who died in 1995, he is survived by his son Robert Tracey Heckman of Kingston; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter, at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Beechwood Cemetery, New Rochelle, N.Y.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Samuel D. Dills

BRENTWOOD - Samuel D. Dills, 72, of Deerhill Road, died Friday, March 28, 2003 at the Exeter Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born July 15, 1930 in Bryson City, N.C., the son of the late Garland Allen and Mary Alice (Gibson) Dills. He had resided in Brentwood since the early 1970s and was formerly of Boston and North Carolina.

He started as a mail carrier in the city of Boston, where he was a member of the Local 301 union. After he moved to New Hampshire he worked at the Portsmouth Post Office. He retired after 30 years as a postmaster. He also owned and operated a small-engine repair shop, which he ran out of his home, and Jamie’s Bargain Barn.

Mr. Dills was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War.

He was a volunteer fireman with the town of Brentwood and was also a member of the Brentwood Historical Society. He enjoyed antiquing and collecting coins and magnets.

He is survived by two sons, James P. Dills of Brentwood and David Dills of Tewksbury, Mass; two daughters, Dianna Currier of Exeter and Donna Dills of Greenville; his ex-wife, Grace Dills of Exeter; one brother, Robert Dills of North Carolina; two sisters, Betty Webb of Candler, N. C. and Laura Ledbetter of Leicester, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A time of visitation will be held Tuesday, April 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the family home, 172 Deerhill Road, Brentwood.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Department, Brentwood 03833.

Mary D. McKendrick

EXETER - Mary D. McKendrick, 93, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Langdon Place of Exeter.

She was born Nov. 18, 1909 in Exeter, the daughter of the late Norman S. And Clara (Dunham) McKendrick.

A native of Exeter, Miss McKendrick graduated from Robinson Seminary and Gorham (Maine) State Teachers College. Subsequently, she earned a bachelor of science in education degree from Boston University and a master of science in education from Harvard. She pursued a teaching career, highlighted by her work in western Massachusetts with bed-ridden children suffering from rheumatic fever. Upon her return to Exeter, she continued to tutor children home-bound because of illness. In recognition of her services to education and to church life, Piedmont College conferred upon her the degree of Doctor of Humanities honoris causa.

During the early years of World War II, Miss McKendrick organized Exeter’s production of garments and surgical dressings for the American Red Cross.

She had been a member of the Exeter Congregational Church and later, wishing to become a member of a church affiliated with the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, she joined the First Congregational Church of Kingston, where she had been an active member of the Missions Committee. She was instrumental in the establishment of a fund that enables the church to offer financial assistance to its delegates to attend the annual meetings of the National Association.

Miss McKendrick was among the founders of the New Hampshire Congregational Fellowship, later serving as scribe, executive secretary and on the Executive Committee. Her promotional exhibits of Congregational literature were a feature of fellowship meetings.

Within the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, she attended annual meetings at her own expense, enabling several small churches to have representation and through her reports, to be informed of the progress of the NACCC in ministry and mission. The Granite State Congregationalists chose her to be their first ambassador in that NACCC program.

She honored her father’s memory through the Norman S. McKendrick Scholarship to aid students from New England in the Congregational Foundation for Theological Studies Program.

Miss McKendrick was a former member of the Corporation of Exeter Hospital, the Eventide Home, the Exeter Historical Society, board of directors of the Seacoast Branch of the Child and Family Services of New Hampshire, a sponsor of the Spaulding Youth Center, the Friday Club, the East Side Current Events Club, and the Exeter Republican Women’s Club.

She is survived by two cousins, Harriet Hall Friedman of Concord, Mass., and Howard Dunham of Edison, N.J.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 4 at 11 a.m. at the Kingston Congregational Church. Private burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boston Guild for the Hard of Hearing Inc., 1505 Commonwealth Ave., Suite 420, Brighton, Mass. 02135 and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Northeast Region, 3 West 35th St., New York, N.Y. 10001.
