Gerald R. McCarthy

RAYMOND - Gerald Richard McCarthy, 66, of Main Street, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the Lahey Clinic, Burlington, Mass., after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., the son of Gladys (Williams) McCarthy of Lowell and the late Frank McCarthy and had resided in North Andover, Mass., for many years before moving to Raymond 10 years ago.

He was a graduate of Lowell High School and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany as a heavy equipment mechanic.

Mr. McCarthy was a mechanic in the Lawrence/North Andover area.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed the beach, mountains and his motor home. He liked working with wood and enjoyed flying piper cubs and twin Cherokee airplanes.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cynthia (Cousins) McCarthy of Raymond; one daughter, Cindy Gibby of Raymond; one son, Tona McCarthy of Raymond; three grandchildren; five brothers, Ed McCarthy of Tyngsboro, Mass., Daniel McCarthy of Beaver Falls, Pa., David McCarthy of Chelmsford, Mass., Richard McCarthy of Hudson and Frank McCarthy of Lowell; five sisters, Virginia Cogan of Tewksbury, Mass., Elouise Kenner of Miami, Fla., Mary Pincence of Lowell, Dorithy Moore of Elphareta, Ga., and Kathleen Taylor of North Haven, Conn.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday in St. Joseph Church, Epping, with the Rev. Mike Taylor as celebrant. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping.

Memorial donations may be made to the Raymond Police, Fire or Ambulance, Raymond Safety Complex, 1 Scribner Road, Raymond, NH 03077.

Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond.

Jeffery P. Robbins Jr.

EAST KINGSTON - Jeffery P. Robbins Jr., 19, died Friday, June 6, 2003, as the result of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in East Kingston.

He was born Dec. 3, 1983, in Beverly, Mass., and had graduated from Exeter High School on June 5. He had been attending school after work to get his diploma.

Jeffery was an auto body technician at Den’s Auto Body in East Kingston. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a certified collision repair paint specialist. He was an artistic painter who was in pursuit of a career as a custom airbrushing artist for motorcycles and cars.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Diana and Bently Warren; his father, Jeffery P. Robbins Sr.; his grandmother, Lucie Jenkins; his grandfather, Thomas Robbins; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Frank S. Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 14 Independent St., Rowley, Mass.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the First Congregational Church, Route 1A, Rowley.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

G. Philip Ryan

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - G. Philip Ryan, 87, formerly of Hampton, died Sunday, June 1, 2003.

He had resided in Salem, Mass., Albany, N.Y., Framingham, Holliston and Ashland, Mass., before retiring in Hampton.

Mr. Ryan had a rewarding career in the automotive industry. He spent his leisure time hunting, fishing, reading and enjoying his family.

The widower of Lorraine (Trudeau) Ryan, who died in 1994, he is survived by four children, Philip, Barbara, Carmen and Peter; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Ryan; and two nieces.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Local arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home Crematory, Hampton.

John A. Stollar Sr.

EXETER - John A. Stollar Sr., 86, of 155 Court St., died Friday, June 6, 2003, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born April 10, 1917, in Waterbury, Conn., the son of the late Andrew J. and Irene (Phelan) Stollar, moving to Exeter in 1960.

He was a graduate of Crosby High School, Waterbury.

Mr. Stollar was a machinist for the former Chase Shawmut Co. of Newburyport, Mass., now the Gould Co. He previously worked for the Chase Brass Co. in Waterbury.

He was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter.

The widower of Eleanor (Brady) Stollar, he is survived by three sons, Andrew J. Stollar of Exeter, John A. Stollar Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Martin B. Stollar of Exeter; four daughters, Mary Ann Harris of England, Rita I. Stollar and Kathleen Pottle, both of Exeter, and Irene E. McCain of Hampton; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters, Rita Clark, Mary Viatkus and Ruth Switz, all of Waterbury, and Jane Sherwill of West Yarmouth, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Ellen J. Deal; two grandsons, B.J. McCain and Andrew McCain; and one brother, Joseph Stollar.

Graveside services were held Monday in Exeter Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833 or to St. Michael Church, 9 Lincoln St., Exeter, NH 03833.Arrangements were by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Mabel C. Stone

DOVER - Mabel Caroline Stone, 85, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the Dover Rehabilitation Center after a period of failing health.

She was born April 1, 1918, in Otis Field, Maine, the daughter of the late Wallace and Ethel May (Lunt) Stone. She was raised in Exeter and lived at Stone Farm on Route 111 and on Brentwood Road. She had previously resided in Newmarket.

Miss Stone was a housekeeper for Mrs. Fiske of Exeter for many years.She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Exeter and Durham for many years.She enjoyed knitting.She is survived by one brother and his wife, Walter and Helen Stone of Exeter; one sister, Marguerite Fieldsend of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Brentwood Cemetery, Brentwood, with the Rev. Scott Meadows officiating.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Alice E. Brogan

NORTH HAMPTON - Alice E. (Smith) Brogan, 70, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Medford, Mass., and had resided there many years before coming to North Hampton.

Mrs. Brogan was a receptionist for Johnson Control for 13 years, retiring in 1995.

She enjoyed arts and crafts, shopping and holiday decorating.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Brogan; her children, Scott Wigglesworth of Gardner, Mass., Arlene Gavan and her husband Thomas of Lexington, Mass., Margaret Bush of Nashua, James Coates of Houston and Catherine Coates-Chimento of Brookline; 21 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, John H. Smith.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Thursday in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Medford. Burial was in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, stuffed animal donations for crisis situations may be donated to the North Hampton Police Department, c/o Jess Miehle.

Arlo E. Collins

FREMONT - Arlo E. Collins, 70, of Main Street, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood, where he had resided for the past two years.

He was born June 24, 1932, in Portsmouth, the son of the late Clifford and Margaret (Brackett) Collins. He was raised in New Castle and Greenland, and had resided in Fremont for 42 years.

He attended Greenland Elementary School, was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and received his degree in civil engineering from Northeastern University and was a 1954 graduate of Wentworth University which led him to receive his AMP License.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.

Mr. Collins taught drafting in Pawtucket, Mass., and Salem.

He enjoyed woodworking, boat building and gardening.

He is survived by three sons, Cyle Collins of Alfred, Maine, Kurt Collins of Washington, Calif., and Christopher Collins of Raymond; three daughters, Kimberly Strandell of Raymond, Cathy Golaszewski of Ottawa, Ill., and Karen Hanides of Hampstead; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Greenland Community Church with the Rev. Thomas Barker officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rockingham Nutrition Meals on Wheels Program, 111 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

Edith M. Harte

PORTSMOUTH - Edith M. Harte, 80, of 225 Colonial Drive, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at her home.

She was born Dec. 31, 1922, in Rochester, the daughter of Albert and Eleanora (Schmidt) Hert and was a graduate of Spaulding High School.

Mrs. Harte was a member of St. James Church and a former member of the Portsmouth Garden Club and the Junior Women’s Club. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and enjoyed gardening, spending time with her grandchildren, and line dancing.

The widow of Charles E. Harte, who died in 2000, she is survived by four daughters, Mary Harte of New Castle, Joan Harrington of Center Ossippee, Jean Lerch and her husband Robert of Exeter, and June Palmer and her husband Glen of Greenland; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie Carter of Rochester.

She was predeceased by one brother, Albert Hert.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 4 to 7:00 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00 a.m. in St. James Church, Route One, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth.

Memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels, c/o Rockingham County Nutrition Program, P.O. Box 520, Epping, NH 03042.

Dorothy C. Sparks

NEWMARKET - Dorothy C. Sparks, 76, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at her home.

She was born Aug. 28, 1926, in Pawtucket, R.I. and had resided in Cranston and Coventry, R.I., before moving to New Hampshire in 1993.

Mrs. Sparks loved nature and seeing wildlife.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Susan J. and Mark L. Faretra of Nottingham; and one sister, Bernice Bockus of Chugiak, Alaska.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Assistance with the arrangements was by the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket.

John S. Strong Jr.

RANGELEY, Maine - John Sanborn Strong Jr., 65, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at his home.

He was born May 3, 1938, in Boston, the son of John S. and Mary (Woodman) Strong.

He was educated in Massachusetts schools.

Mr. Strong was a district sales manager for Peter Parts Electric of New York.

He was a founder and president of the Alpine Acres Association and founder of the New England Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

He was an avid golfer and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Claire Strong of Rangeley; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jeff Strong of North Reading, Mass., Daniel and Mary Strong of Farmington, Maine, and Christopher and Christine Strong of Hampton ; one stepson and his wife, Charles and Diane Clinton of Malden, Mass.; one stepdaughter and her husband, Lisa and James Tirrell of Malden; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Francis Strong of Ironwood, Mich.; one brother-in-law, James Jillett of Melrose, Mass.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Wiles Funeral Home, 137 Farmington Falls Road, (Routes 2 and 27), Farmington. Friends may call on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the hour of the service.
