Eva A. Barrett

SEABROOK - Eva A. (Tremblay) Barrett, 81, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in Hampton Falls.

She was born in Salem, Mass., the daughter of the late Edmund and Alma (Chouinard) Tremblay and had resided in Pittsfield, Mass., before moving to Seabrook 30 years ago.

Mrs. Barrett was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club of Seabrook.

The widow of Frank Barrett, she is survived by three sons and their wives, Frank and Donna Barrett of Lynn, Mass., Paul and Jane Barrett of Danvers, Mass., and Ronald and Kathleen Barrett of Hampton Falls; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Robert, Leo and Roger Tremblay, all of Salem, Mass., and Pete Tremblay of Naples, Fla.; one sister, Anita Kinseth of Fort Worth, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Paul and Albert Tremblay; and two sisters, Lorraine Bergeron and Rose McKee.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Berube & Sons Funeral Home, 191 Lafayette, Salem, Mass.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. in the funeral home followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Anne Church, Jefferson Ave., Salem. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833 or to one's local hospice office.

Katherine S. Carpenter

EXETER - Katherine S. Carpenter, 88, formerly of 277 Water St., died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood, after a period of failing health.

She was born May 31, 1915, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of John C. and Mary Trait. She had resided in Warwick, R.I., before moving to New Hampshire in 1976.

Mrs. Carpenter was an accomplished rug hooker and operated the Hook Nook in Northwood where she taught rug hooking. She enjoyed painting, the outdoors, fishing, kayaking and gardening.

The widow of William F. Carpenter, who died in 1993, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Virginia and Edward Danilowski of Stratham and Patricia and William Lynch of Dover; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Evelyn Sullivan of Warwick; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, John, James and David Trait; one sister, Ethel "Pat" Fish; and one grandson, Jeffery Lynch.

Memorial services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Stratham Community Church, Emery Lane, Stratham, with the Rev. David Dodge officiating.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. in Highland Memorial Cemetery, Johnston, R.I.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Bernard P. Devlin

EPPING - Bernard P. Devlin, 77, of 290 Calef Highway, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Manchester.

He was born May 12, 1926, in Everett, Mass., the son of the late John J. and May (Spotterswood) Devlin and had resided in Epping since 1982.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Devlin was a heliarc welder for General Electric in Everett.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans; the American Legion Post 32 in Exeter; Local 201 IUE, Lynn, Mass.; and a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Everett.

The widower of Dorothy (Gibbons) Devlin, who died in 1995, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bernard J. and Marianne Devlin of Malden, Mass., Frank P. and Ann Devlin of Saugus, Mass., and Paul J. Devlin of Everett; three daughters and their husbands, Sadie and Roger Anderson of Haverhill, Mass., Judy M. and Reynold Mattuchio of Medford, Mass., and Cynthia and Lloyd Brooks of Wilmington, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Mary H. Devlin of Malden; and his companion of six years, Jeanette Cote of Raymond.

He was predeceased by one brother, John J. Devlin.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping.

Emma N. Fennerty

BREWSTER, Mass. - Emma (Nicholl) Fennerty, 97, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at EPOCH Senior Health Care of Brewster.

She was born in Canada and had resided in Claremont and Merrimack, retiring to Orleans, Mass., in 1972.

She was a 1924 graduate of Portsmouth High School and attended Warner's Training School in Worcester, Mass.

Mrs. Fennerty worked for Jordan Marsh in Bedford from 1967 until 1972.

She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Nashua; the Order of the Eastern Star No. 152 of Nashua; and the Council on Aging in Orleans.

She enjoyed needlepoint, reading and traveling.

The widow of Leon K. Fennerty, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 24, at noon in the Congregational Church Cemetery, Stratham.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Ryan E. Rafferty

SANBORNVILLE - Ryan Emerson Rafferty, infant son of John M. and Sarah K. (Crowley) Rafferty, of Rocky Point Road, died suddenly Monday, July 14, 2003.

He was born March 7, 2003, in Exeter.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Jeremiah and Louise Crowley of Connecticut; his paternal grandparents, Susan Rafferty of Danville, and Michael and his wife Linda Rafferty of Massachusetts; his great-grandmothers, Kay Beckwith of Maine and Isabelle Awn of New Jersey; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of the Angels was celebrated Thursday in St. Anthony Church, Sanbornville, with the Rev. Edmund A. Babicz, pastor, and the Rev. Paul Montminy of Rochester as concelebrants.

Interment will be in Lovell Lake Cemetery, Sanbornville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ryan E. Rafferty Memorial Fund, c/o Profile Bank, Meadow St., Sanbornville, NH 03872.

Frank F. Richards

GREENLAND - Frank F. Richards, 92, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, after a brief illness at the New Hampshire Veterans Home, Tilton, where he had been a resident since 1997.

He was born Oct. 24, 1910, in Exeter, the son of Edward and Maude (Button) Richards and attended Exeter High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 1060th Engineers. He was promoted to technical sergeant just one month after induction and served in the Philippines, Hollandia, New Guinea and other islands in the South Pacific. He was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation medal for his participation in the first assault wave on those islands.

Mr. Richards was a carpenter and was a self-employed contractor. He had previously owned and operated a filling station at the corner of Franklin and Court streets in Exeter. Following his retirement as a contractor, he was a joiner working on nuclear subs at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiring from there in 1973. During the Depression, he left to find work in the orange groves of Florida, the silver mines of Nevada and on a U.S. government dredger on the Sacramento River in California.

He was a steadfast Republican and, following his retirement, he served as the Greenland representative to the New Hampshire State Legislature for four years, following in his mother's footsteps, who had been one of the most prominent female legislators in the 1950s.

He was a member of Stratham Community Church; a lifelong member of the Congregational Church; and a former member of Greenland Community Church.

He took pride in his ancestry that stretched back to the earliest European settlement of colonial New Hampshire and was a member of the Society for Descendants of Colonial Wars and the Sons of the American Revolution.

Mr. Richards was instrumental in the building of a fire station in Greenland, directed a two-year planning effort in the Greenland Bicentennial in 1976 and was honored as the first Citizen of the Year in Greenland.

He served as the sergeant-at-arms and was a member of the Resident's Council at the N.H. Veterans Home. As an ambassador for the home, he addressed many school groups in central New Hampshire.

The widower of Ella (Higgins) Richards, his wife of 54 years who died in 1990, he is survived by two sons, John Richards of Durham, N.C., and Greenland and Thomas Richards of Sunapee, N.H.; one daughter, Emily Richards of Westminster, Vt.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Philip Richards of East Winthrop, Maine, and Donald Richards of York, Maine; and one sister, Olive Tardiff of Exeter.

The family will receive visitors Friday from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Private internment will be in Exeter Cemetery.

Mildred S. Block

HAMPTON - Mildred S. Block of Hampton, died June 30, 2003.

She was formerly of South Hamilton, Mass.

Mrs. Block was a secretary for the Hamilton-Wenham Visiting Nurse Association for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Boris "Red" Block; two sons and their wives, Daniel and Denise Block of Stratham and David and Debbie Block of York, Maine; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Alexander LaMontagne of Middleton, Wis., and Cathy and Bill Willcock of Seattle, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.

Carol M. Gahan

NEWMARKET - Carol M. (Hawkins) Gahan, 63, of New Road, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, in Exeter Hospital.

She was born July 7, 1940, in Boston, the daughter of Dr. James and Alice (Brisson) Hawkins and had resided in Newmarket for many years.

Mrs. Gahan had been employed by Sam Smith Shoe and the Kingston-Warren Corp.

She was very artistic and enjoyed drawing and loved animals, birds and squirrels.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Paul T. Gahan of Newmarket; one stepson, Mark Gahan of Lee; and one brother, Bill Hawkins of Everett, Wash.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.

After cremation private burial will be in Durham Cemetery.

Mae Hayes

PORTSMOUTH - Mae (Caswell) Hayes, 94, of 346 Pleasant St., died Friday, July 11, 2003, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home .

She was born Oct. 14, 1908, in Rye the daughter of Sherman O. and Grace A. (McHatton) Caswell and was a 1926 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

Mrs. Hayes was a secretary at the former Kings Department Store in Portsmouth before her retirement.

She was an avid bingo player and played five to six times a week.

She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Avery of Kittery Point, Maine, and Agnes Courtemanche of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Gertrude Weeks.

Funeral services were held Monday in the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mark H. Wentworth Home, 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

James J. Langley

KINGSTON - James J. Langley, 68, of Kingston Pines, died Friday, July 11, 2003, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born July 16, 1934, in Dorchester Mass. He had resided in Norton and Quincy, Mass., before moving to Kingston 2 1/2 years ago.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving as a medic.

Mr. Langley was employed at the state hospital in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for many years.

He was a talented musician who played the organ for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jean Gioncardi Chella Langley of Kingston; one stepdaughter, Patricia Cline of Kingston; four grandchildren; and three nephews.

He was predeceased by three stepchildren, Corinne Chella, Ralph Chella and Dana Chella.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Front and Lincoln Streets, Exeter.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.
