Judith Ann Roberts

BARTLETT - Judith Ann Roberts, 70, died August 2, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway, following a brief illness. Born in South Yarmouth, Mass., the daughter of Herbert and Ruth (Elliott) Thurston, she had lived in Mount Washington Valley for over 40 years.
She had been a real estate broker for over 25 years and for the last eight years she worked in a local bank working with the public, which she enjoyed doing.
Judy was an avid golfer and past member of Wentworth Hall Golf Club as well as North Conway Country Club. She enjoyed family, watching her children and grandchildren play sports, her friends and doing business in a professional manner.
The family includes her husband, Lynn R. Roberts of Glen; three sons, Michael K. Gile and his wife Joan of Dover, Matthew H. Gile and his wife Theresa of Bartlett and Peter A. Gile and his wife Lucia of Wakefield, MA; a daughter, Jean-Marie Day and her husband Brian of Center Conway; seven grandchildren, Allison and Molly Gile of Dover, Ryan Gile, Patrick Rogers and Kassandra Gile, all of Bartlett and Tony Day and Benjamin Day, both of Center Conway; a brother, Peter Thurston of Phoenix, AZ and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Whittum, in 2001.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Glen Cemetery with the Rev. Robert L. Burns Sr., officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to the Bartlett-Jackson Ambulance Service, Glen, NH 03838.
The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.

Richard A. Herring

MADISON - Richard A. Herring, 65, of Madison died August 3, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway following a sudden illness. Born in Houlton, Maine, the son of Jane Bubar and the late Philip Cyr of Houlton, Maine. He lived in Maine for most of his life before moving to Mount Washington Valley in 2000.
Mr. Herring was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Naples (Maine) American Legion Post 155.
He had been in law enforcement in Maine for several years. He also was a pilot flying spray planes in Houlton, Maine, and Mississippi, and he worked for Donald Jesson, in Naples, Maine, as a float plane pilot for 2 summers, flying tourists over the lake region area. He was a truck driver for approximately 25 years, which his son grew a great passion for and wanting to carry out the family tradition and is now succeeding. More recently (Dick) Richard worked at Wal-Mart in North Conway and had been a custodian at Madison Elementary School.
Richard was a member of the Carroll County Fish, Game and Shooting Club in Madison and he was an avid fisherman and loved animals.
The family includes a son, Phillip A. Herring and his wife Tammy of Gorham, Maine; a daughter, Patricia Herring Tardy of Willimantic, Conn.; six grandchildren; his mother, Jane B. Bubar of Littleton, Maine; a half-brother, Rod Herring of Houlton, Maine. And Richard Herring's companion, Janet L. Satcher of Madison.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway with the Rev. G. Alan Baxter, officiating. Burial will be in Gilman Cemetery in Madison. Visiting hours will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations may be accepted and sent to Phillip Herring at 121 Line Rd, Gorham, ME 04038.

Ruth Robarts

Ruth Robarts, beloved wife of the late Tremaine "Trim" Robarts, and a longtime resident of Marblehead, Mass., died June 5, 2002, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease at Sunbridge Rehabilitation Center of Wolfeboro.
Mrs. Robarts was born and raised in Kingsburg, Calif. After graduation from Kingsburg High School, she moved to Lynn, Mass., with her family when her father was called to be the minister at the Swedish Covenant Church. She attended Lynn Burdett College and was employed by the Marblehead Savings Bank for many years.
In 1938 she married Tremaine "Trim" Robarts and became a devoted fan of Marblehead sports, following the career of her husband as coach and athletic director and the participation of their two sons, Kent and Jack. Mrs. Robarts was an active member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by all of her family and friends.
She is survived by her two sons, John T. (Jack) Robarts of Greenacres, Fla., and Kent F. Robarts of Center Ossipee; five grandchildren, Kent R. Robarts of Chesapeake, Va., Kristin Robarts of Venice, Fla., Lisa L. Robarts of Chester, Vt., Kurt T. Robarts of Bradford, Mass., and Pamela J. Dindo of Topsfield, Mass; and nine great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 67 Cornell Road, Marblehead, Mass., at 11 a.m. , Saturday, June 8. Those who wish, may make memorial contributions to the Employees' Fund, Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center for Wolfeboro, 39 Clipper Drive, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Eustis-Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm St., Marblehead, Mass.

Foster Wardner Gilroy

FRYEBURG - Foster Wardner Gilroy, 50, of Highland Park, died June 4, 2002, at his home after a long illness.
He was born Aug. 12, 1951, in Huntington, N.Y., the son of Wardner and Frederika (VanHarten) Gilroy. After obtaining his bachelor of arts degree from Hofstra College in Hempstead, N.Y., he earned his J.D. degree from Western New England Law School in Springfield Mass., and he was a representative of the Student Bar Association.
After the death of his wife, Charlene Kemp Gilroy, he made his home with his parents at Highland Park in Fryeburg. He is also survived by his first wife, Linda Bauer Gilroy, of Melville, N.Y.
Cremation will be through the services of Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Eastern Slopes at Runnells Hall, Chocorua.

Ralph R. Ames

Ralph R. Ames, 67, of Route 25, South Tamworth, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at his home with his loving family by his side. Ralph was a native and life-long resident of Tamworth. He was born June 4, 1935, the son of the late Claude Milton and Emma (Grace) Ames of South Tamworth.
Ralph had worked at Frankson's Furniture Company in West Ossipee for 10 years and as a carpenter for Robert Eastwick of Tamworth for 10 years. He later formed a partnership with Stephen Damon of Tamworth working in the Tamworth area as Ames & Damon Inc., for many years.
He served as a caretaker and sexton of the cemeteries in Tamworth for several years. Ralph also worked as a caretaker for the Huntington families on Bemis Mountain for several years.
Ralph was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ferne (Hodge) Ames, South Tamworth; two daughters, Sherry Densmore, South Tamworth, and Edith Carter, South Tamworth; four grandchildren, Tony Shackford, Tampa, Fla., Josh Shackford, Madison, Sara Carter and Heather Carter, both of South Tamworth; two great grandsons, Zachery Colondres and Joshua Shackford, three brothers, Roy Ames, Charles Ames and Philip Ames and a sister, Irene Norcross, all of South Tamworth; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours or funeral services.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice of Southern Carroll County, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Pauline V. Barbour

Pauline V. Barbour, 75, of Christian Ridge, Wolfeboro, passed away Dec. 7, 2002, at the Sunbridge Care of Wolfeboro.
Pauline was born July 8, 1927, the daughter of the late Ernest and Theresa (Valley) Hutchins. She had lived in Wolfeboro for most of her life where she worked as a waitress at the Open Door Restaurant for many years and also at the Wolfeboro Cafe for many years. She later lived in Springfield, Vt., where she worked at the Idlenot Restaurant for a short time.
She is survived by her nephews, Michael McKenney, Tuftonboro, and William McKenney, Boston, Mass.; and a niece, Leslie Anderson, Manchester. She is also survived by an aunt, Thelma Rico of Wolfeboro.
There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Wolfeboro, at a later date.
Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Blanche Pean Dube

Blanche Pean (Demers) Dube, 94, of Broad Bay Road, Center Ossipee, died Dec. 9, 2002, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
She was born Jan. 16, 1908, in Newmarket, the third of 13 children of the late Israel and Sarah (St. Cyr) Demers. Blanche worked for the Sam Smith Shoe Company. She and her husband moved to Center Ossipee in 1942.
Blanche enjoyed cooking, bingo, trips to Las Vegas, fishing and hunting. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Leo P. Dube, Center Ossipee; four grandchildren, Robert K. Fickett, Jr. and his wife, Claire, Epping, William M. Fickett, Somersworth, Ramona Beasley and her husband, Clint, of Arizona, and Patricia Alfiero and her husband, Anthony, of Gorham, Maine; seven great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; three sisters, Alma Dionne, Brentwood, Florence Levesque, Florida, Bertha Pelletier, Newmarket; a brother, Henry Demers, Newmarket; many nieces, newphes and cousins. Blanche was predeceased by her three children, William Crowley, Lillian Fickett and Wilfred Crowley.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. Burial will be in the spring in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.

Rodney Ernest Hunter

Rodney Ernest Hunter passed away of Dec. 5, 2002, in Prescott, Ariz. He was born on April 27, 1931, in Richmond, Maine, to Wallace L. and Hazel G. (Baxter) Hunter.
Rod moved to Fountain Hills, Ariz., in 1992 from Glendale, Calif. At the time of his retirement, he was the manager of technical facilities at KABC-TV in Hollywood. He moved to Prescott in 2001.
As a Mason, Rod was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 180 in South Portland, Maine. He also was a member of the American Radio Relay League and the National Rife Association. Rod was an amateur radio operator, an astronomer, a photographer and a watercolor artist. He also enjoyed target practice.
Rod served in the Army during the Korean War as chief radar operator of an anti-aircraft radar system, then as a platoon sergeant in a training battalion.
Survivors include his wife, Nan Hunter of Prescott, Ariz.; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Cindy Hunter of Pecatonica, Ill., and Ernie and Debbie Hunter of Holts Summit, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Kaye and Ed Collins of Lehi, Utah; brothers and sister-in-law, Floyd Hunter of Syracuse, N.Y.; and Russ and Dottie Hunter of Conway, N.H.; sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Paul Bowden of Gales Ferry, Conn.; grandchildren Susan, Elijah, Matthew, Josilyn, Colby, Parker and Reed and great-grandchildren, Jordan, Madison and Jobe.
A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Merry Meeting Bay Cemetery, Bowdoinham, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 10 W. 35th St., 9th floor, Chicago, IL 60637.

Diane Rooney

Mrs. Diane Rooney, 100, of 881 Fourth Avenue, Berlin, NH, passed away at her residence on Wednesday, November 27, 2002.
She was born in Berlin on April 22, 1902, the daughter of Louis and Diane Couture Landry. A lifelong resident of Berlin, she attended St. Regis Academy and Berlin High School where she also played basketball. Diane was a member of St. Joseph Parish, the Secular Franciscan Order, a past member of the Ladies of St. Anne at St. Joseph Parish, the Friends of Berlin Catholic Schools Fund, Inc., RSVP, the St. Joseph’s Altar Guild and of the Holiday Center. Mrs. Rooney was also a former first grade CCD teacher at St. Joseph. She was involved with the Manchester Mission, worked against abortion, and was responsible for the recitation of the Rosary on a local radio station in the 70s. She was a hairdresser in the 1940s and taught her children to play the piano. Diane was also a long time Rosary maker.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts of any kind and artwork. She always had a beautiful array of flowers in her shrine to Our Lady. Ever since working in a furniture factory in Island Pond, VT, she was always handy with a saw and hammer and was a jack-of-all-trades. Always rooting for her husband, she was a great baseball fan.
She had a great love for people, hospitality reigned supreme at the Rooney residence and holiday time was always extra special, filled with fun, laughter and goodies of all kinds.
Mrs. Rooney was predeceased by her husband, Augustine “Gus” Rooney on September 1, 1988 and by her daughter, Sr. Anne Marie Rooney, PM, on June 19, 1995. She is the last of 12 siblings, better known to the area were her two brothers, Alfred and Henry Landry. She is survived by three sons, James and his wife Jeanne of Fort Wayne, IN, Michael and his wife Adela of Spring Valley, CA, and Coakley and his friend Sharon of Berlin; two daughters, Eileen and Phyllis and her husband Arthur Morrissette of Berlin; 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 2, at 10 a.m. at the St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish. Interment will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Sunday, December 1, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Fleury-Patry Funeral Home, 72 High St., Berlin. Donations in Mrs. Rooney’s memory may be made to The Nurses, C/O Yvette Leighton, Berlin Health Dept., City Hall, Berlin, NH, 0357, or North Country Home Health and Hospice Agency, 536 Cottage St., Littleton, NH, 03561, or to AV Home Care Services, 795 Main St., Berlin, NH, 03570.

Louis Nusman

Mr. Louis Nusman, 83, husband of the late Elainore Nusman of 287 High Street, Berlin, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 24, 2002 at AVH with his two daughters by his side.
Born in Lovell, MA on August 7, 1919, Mr. Nusman was self-employed with Nusman Brothers-Live Stock Dealers until retirement. He is survived by his three children, a son, Ben Nusman and family of Minnesota; two daughters, Martha May and family of California, Lenore Bergeron and family of Milan; two brothers, Hyman of Lancaster, Max Nusman of Florida; two sisters, Shirley Goldberg of Nevada and Bertha Ayotte of Berlin; nine grandchildren; two great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters and one great-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Montefiore Synagogue Cemetery in Pelham, on Tuesday, November 2, attended by family and friends.

Eleanor 'Tootsie' LaRoche

BERLIN--Mrs. Eleanor "Tootsie" (Armstrong) LaRoche, 82, of 877 Western Avenue, Berlin, NH, passed away on Tuesday evening, April 8, 2003 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. She was born in Berlin on July 5, 1920, the daughter of Frank and Cora (Dumas) Armstrong and was a lifelong resident.
Mrs. LaRoche was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Post #36. She was very active at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
Members of the family include her husband, Barney LaRoche of Berlin; one son, Frank LaRoche and companion Susan Dorval of Berlin; two daughters, Lucy Weeks and companion Mike LaLumiere of Whitefield, and Roxy Thompson and husband Morris of Berlin; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Costello of Berlin; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Francis Armstrong, Sr.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the Old City Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryant Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Ave. Berlin, on Friday afternoon and evening from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Anyone who wishes may make a donation to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in her memory.

Gordon E. Ellis

CHICHESTER, NH - Mr. Gordon E. Ellis, 78, of 235 Main Street, Chichester, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2003 at the Concord Hospital in Concord. He was born in Morgan, VT, on July 8, 1925 the son of Wilbur C.J. and Orpha (Rowe) Ellis. He lived in Island Pond, VT, and moved to Gorham, where he lived for many years. He was employed by St. Johnsbury Trucking. After his retirement, he moved to Chichester, where he has since resided. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II where he served in the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops. He served in the National Guard in Newport, VT, and then served in the Korean War. He was married in the Congregational Church in Island Pond, VT. He was a member of the VFW of Island Pond, the American Legion in Island Pond and a member of the I.O.O.F. and was treasurer of the Lodge of Gorham. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He was a devoted family man.
Members of the family include his wife, June M. (Johnson) Ellis of Chichester; three sons, Arthur Gordon Ellis, Chichester, Randy Harland Ellis of Londonderry and Richard Adam Ellis of Conticook; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one brother, Charles; one sister Phyllis; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 26, at 1 p.m. at the Bryant Funeral Home, 1 Promenade Street, Gorham. Interment will be in the Mount Hayes Cemetery in Gorham. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chichester Rescue Squad, Main Street, Chichester, NH, 03258 in his memory.

John C. Onofrio

MILAN--Mr. John C. Onofrio, 61, of 63 Young Road, Milan, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2003 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. He was born in Berlin, on March 29, 1942, the son of Carmeno A. and Irene (Saunders) Onofrio and was a lifelong resident of Milan. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Berlin. He loved the outdoors, woodworking, flying, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a long haul truck driver for many years prior to being employed by James River Corp. Crown Vantage and Pulp and Paper of America.
Members of the family include one son, Greg Onofrio and companion Tracy Tuliper of Pittsford, VT; two daughters, April Poirier and husband Corey of Berlin, and Spring Jeki and husband Ronald of Stark; four grandchildren, Antonio John Onofrio, Triston Poirier, Aubree Poirier and Isaac Joki; his mother, Irene (Saunders) Onofrio of Milan; four sisters, Christina Corcoran and husband Mark of Milan, Ann Clyne of Ludlow, MA, Amelia Tilton and husband Chan of Groveton, and Jone Thurston and husband Ralph of Wells; one brother, Kenneth Onofrio and wife Linda of Kempner, TX; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Bryant Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Avenue, Berlin. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Milan. There will be no calling hours. Anyone who wishes may donate to a charity of their choice in his memory.
