Donn Tibbetts

Sunday, November 29, 1998

Donn Tibbetts, 67, of Manchester, died Friday after suffering a massive coronary.

Son of Joseph and Yvonne Tardiff Tibbetts, he was born in Manchester.

After attending St. Joseph High School in Manchester, he graduated from the LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale, N.Y., in 1948. Tibbetts attended the University of New Hampshire, where he was freshman class president. He left college to become a radio broadcaster and in 1953 was the national president of the American Society of Disc Jockeys. The next year he became New England's pioneer television disc jockey on Channel 9 in Manchester.

Tibbetts's first professional radio broadcast was in February 1949 on WKBR, Manchester. He was subsequently heard on WTSV, Claremont and Hanover; WHDH, Boston; WKXL, Concord; and WFEA, Manchester.

Tibbetts joined WMUR radio and television in Manchester in 1954. WMUR radio was sold and became WGIR, where Tibbetts eventually served as news director and assistant general manager.

In 1972, Tibbetts joined the Union Leader. He was the State House bureau chief from 1974 until his retirement this year.

As dean of the State House press corps Tibbetts covered presidential primaries, state elections, the administrations of eight governors, sessions of the nation's largest state Legislature and state government.

In addition to daily news stories, Tibbetts wrote the "Under the State House Dome" column. From 1976 through 1992, he covered the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. The Union Leader's late publisher, William Loeb, nationally known for his frank assessments, called Tibbetts "a man of great integrity, who reports things as he sees them, without fear or bias."

After retiring from the Union Leader this year, Tibbetts joined the law firm of Rath, Young & Pignatelli, serving as their part-time government relations adviser. In addition, he was the editor of "Update 2000," the official library newsletter of New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary, published by the state library.

Tibbetts was also a contributing writer for the annual Collier's Yearbook supplement to the Merit Students Encyclopedia. In 1991, he was a White House nominee to be an Institute of Politics Fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Tibbetts was one of 4,000 nominees chosen for inclusion in the New Hampshire Notables publication.

He was voted a record nine times by his peers as New Hampshire Sportscaster, and was chosen as the first sportscaster ever to receive the New Hampshire Sportswriter and Sportscasters Distinguished Service Award. Tibbetts served as the national vice president and a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Sportswriters and Sportscasters and was a charter member of that group.

After 28 years of voluntary service with the U.S. Army Reserve and the New Hampshire Air National Guard, Tibbetts retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Tibbetts was awarded the International Toastmasters Eastern Regional Golden Gavel Award for public service. He served on the historic Pastoral Commission appointed by then Bishop Ernest Primeau. Tibbetts was a member and state chair of the federal Small Business Advisory Council for New Hampshire.

He was a member of the board of directors of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and the New Hampshire Lung Association. He was also a past state chairman of the Christmas Seals campaign. He was a life member of the Elliot Hospital Associates and a parishioner of the St. Joseph Cathedral.
