John D. Wells, BOSCAWEN

Thursday, November 19, 1998

BOSCAWEN - John D. Wells, 38, of North Main Street, died Monday in Concord.

He was born in Boston, the son of Franklin and Ann (Madden) Wells.

He worked for Advanced Recycling Company for several years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Sargent) Wells.

He is survived by three brothers, Franklin Wells Jr. of Omaha, Neb., Thomas Wells of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Dennis Wells of Nashua; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord.

There are no services and burial will be private.

Cynthia D. Millis, CONTOOCOOK

CONTOOCOOK - Cynthia D. Millis, 40, of Perch Lane, died Monday in a fire at her home.

She was born and raised in Lynn, Mass., and spent many summers at her family cottage on Rolfe Pond. She returned to settle permanently in the area several years ago.

She graduated with honors from Lynn, Mass., Classical High School, and went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in agricultural biochemistry, a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry and a master of science degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. She received a doctorate in chemistry from Pennsylvania State, after which she held a position as a post-doctorate fellow in the University of Maryland Department of Chemistry. She had recently been hired by the State of New Hampshire Bureau of Radiological Health, and was due to begin work Dec. 4.

She was the co-holder of two patents, one in Canada and one in the United States, for a chemical process using hydroxylated indoles as dye precursors. She had numerous articles and abstracts published in various journals in the area of toxicology.

She originally aspired to be a veterinarian, and was well known for her love of animals, especially dogs. She fed 60 to 80 geese on Rolfe Pond each autumn, and enjoyed observing the wildlife around her.

She was predeceased by her mother, Helen (Jernelavitch) Millis.

She is survived by her father, Andrew Millis of Lynn, Mass.; a sister, Kathy Millis of Lynn, Mass.; two brothers, Andrew Millis of Lynn, Mass., and Richard Millis of Texas.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Holt Funeral Home 825 Park Ave., Contoocook.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kearsarge Avenue, Contoocook. The Rev. Andre Thibedeau will be the celebrant. Burial will be held after the service in Contoocook Village Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the SPCA, 130 Washington St., Penacook 03303.

Everett D. Murdough, HILLSBORO

Thursday, November 19, 1998

HILLSBORO - Everett D. Murdough, 74, died Monday at home.

He was a lifelong Hillsboro resident, who worked in the dairy industry for many years before retiring.

He enjoyed reading books and spending time outdoors with his dogs.

He was a veteran of the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, Clifford and Stella (Russell) Murdough, he was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Murdough; and a sister, Frances Sweet.

He is survived by two brothers, Charles Murdough and Clifford Murdough, both of Hillsboro; five sisters, Alice Dole of Portland, Conn., Evelyn Young of Concord, Edith Murdough and Ruth Gerini, both of Hillsboro and Marion Cilley of Hampden, Mass.; an aunt, several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Donations may be made to the Hillsboro Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 350, Hillsboro 03244.

The Woodbury Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Ethelyn S. Fuller, CONTOOCOOK

Thursday, November 19, 1998

CONTOOCOOK - Ethelyn S. Fuller, 97, of Pine Street, died Tuesday at Concord Hospital.

She was born in Hartland, Vt., the daughter of Charles and Julia (Bates) Stevens.

She was a 1919 graduate of Stevens High School, Claremont, and she attended Russell Sage College.

She was a member of the Contoocook United Methodist Church, where she held various offices.

She was a member and past president of the United Methodist Church Women's Group and a member of the Contoocook Women's Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, D. Jay Fuller.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Vernon Knowlton of Henniker; a daughter, Barbara Walls of Contoocook; three grandchildren, Donna Carroll of Londonderry, Gerry Walls of Concord and David Walls of Manchester By The Sea, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Contoocook United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paula Payne, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Contoocook Village Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ethelyn Fuller Fund, Contoocook United Methodist Church, Contoocook 03229 or to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 1797, Concord 03302-1797.

The Bennett Funeral Home in Concord is in charge of arrangements.

Earl D. Saley Sr., ALTON

Friday, April 23, 1999

ALTON - Earl D. Saley Sr., 86, of Letter S Road, died Wednesday at Concord Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Mansfield, Mass., the son of Edwin and Rosemary (Leighton) Saley.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of VFW Post 1399 of Weymouth, Mass., and the American Legion of Alton.

He worked as a mechanic for United Parcel Service for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda (McIntyre) Saley of Alton; two sons, Edwin Saley of Concord and Earl Saley Jr. of Hull, Mass.; a daughter, Earlene Walker of Weymouth, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene Perkins of South Yarmouth, Mass.; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Norma (MacDonald) Saley.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Moore Chapel of the Alton Bay Christian Conference Center. The Rev. Bob Hett, pastor, will officiate.

The Waters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth R. Alcott, CONTOOCOOK

CONTOOCOOK - A service for Elizabeth R. Alcott, who died April 10, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 274 Pleasant St., Concord. The Rev. Joan Kahn-Schneider will officiate.

Ethel C. Scanlon, CANTERBURY

Friday, April 23, 1999

CANTERBURY - Ethel C. Scanlon, 75, of Canterbury, died Saturday.

She received a degree from the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music in 1945. She then moved to New York and studied piano at the Julliard School of Music. She received a master's degree from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1948.

She taught music in schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She was also a piano teacher at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

From 1974 until her retirement in 1990, she taught individual and class piano in her home in Troy, Ohio. She also served as the organist at the Christian Science Church in Troy for 15 years.

She moved to Canterbury in 1990. There, she served as a trustee on the Historical Society and Historic District Conservation Commission boards.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew Scanlon; a son, David Scanlon; a brother, William Cattran of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Alice Hawkins of Stow, Ohio, and Dr. Irene Stephens of DeKalb, Ill.; and four granddaughters.

Frank H. Martin, LACONIA

LACONIA - Frank H. Martin, 74, of Endicott Street, Weirs Beach, died April 14 at the home of his daughter in Ellsworth, Maine.

He was born in Somerville, Mass., the son of William and Emily (Fifield) Martin. He was a graduate of the Somerville school system and had been a resident of Somerville for many years. He moved to Alton in the 1960s and later moved to Laconia in 1987.

He worked in the research department of Polaroid Corp. in Cambridge, Mass., for 40 years.

He was a 48-year member of Somerville Lodge in Somerville, Mass.

He is survived by two sons, Frank Martin Jr. of Pembroke and David Martin of Davis, Calif.; four daughters, Sheila Stoddard of Ellsworth, Maine, Lorraine Chapman of Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla., Marianne Webster of Tustin, Calif., and Laura Bussey of Petaluma, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Jackson Martin of Oahu, Hawaii; two sisters, Helen Vender of Coshocton, Ohio, and Lillian Martin of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Paul Martin.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Dewhirst Funeral Home, Laconia. The Rev. Dr. James Bolin Jr., pastor of the Gilford Community Church, will officiate.

Cleo G. Henderson, PENACOOK

Friday, April 23, 1999

PENACOOK - Cleo G. Henderson, 86, of Penwood Drive, died Wednesday at the Franklin Regional Hospital.

She was born in Easton, Maine, the daughter of Robert Guy and Gertrude (Mahaney) Tuttle. She lived in Penacook for two years, coming from Maine, where she had lived for 84 years.

She was a graduate of Richer Classical Institute and Colby College, Class of 1936. She later earned two master's degrees from the University of Maine. She was affiliated with local, state and national education organizations, as well as the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society. She belonged to the Ayuda Club.

She was a teacher, a principal and a librarian in central Maine school systems for more than 30 years.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Guy Tuttle; and a sister, Hilda Davenport.

She is survived by three daughters, Gayle LaVallee of Penacook, and twins, Joan Henderson of Garland, Texas, and Jane Bunting of Bordontown, N.J.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Milo, Maine.

The Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
