Shirley E. Twombly, PENACOOK

PENACOOK - Shirley E. Twombly, 75, of Manor Road, died yesterday after a long illness.

She was born in Franklin, the daughter of Clyde and Laura (Holland) Fairbanks.

She lived in the Penacook-Boscawen area for most of her life. She spent summers on Lake Winnipesaukee in Laconia for many years.

She was a 1943 graduate of Penacook High School and a 1947 graduate of the Margaret Pillsbury Memorial School of Nursing in Concord.

She was a registered nurse and worked at the Norris Nursing Home in Boscawen. She also worked for the Concord Regional Visiting Nurses and was the school nurse for the Merrimack Valley Central Elementary School for many years.

She was a member of the United Church of Penacook, a 51-year member and past Matron of the Priscilla Chapter and past Grand Ruth of the Grand Chapter. She also served as a trustee of the Thornton Fund for many years.

She enjoyed collecting antiques, doing crossword puzzles and tending flowers.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Twombly of Penacook; a son, Bruce Taylor of Penacook; a daughter, Robin Wrightington of Sunapee; a stepson, Brian Twombly of Londonderry; two stepdaughters, Brenda Mayer of San Diego and Barbara Nauton of Tinmouth, Vt.; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a sister, Nevly Hilliard of Pembroke.

She was predeceased by her first husband, James Taylor Jr., and her sister, Barbara Mayo, both of Penacook.

Calling hours will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home. The Priscilla Chapter No. 51 of the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct services at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held in the United Church of Penacook tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.

The Rev. John Westhaver, pastor, and the Rev. Oliver Northcott, former pastor, will officiate at the services.

Burial will be held after the service in Woodlawn Cemetery. Bearers will be Douglas Wyman, Derek McFarland, Sean McFarland, Brian Twombly, William Twombly and James Twombly.

Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 20 Commerce Park North, Suite 108, Bedford 03110 or the New Hampshire Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 0797, Concord 03301-0797.

Evelyn M. Kidder, FRANKLIN

FRANKLIN - Evelyn M. Kidder, 88, formerly of South Main Street, died yesterday at the Franklin Regional Hospital after a period of failing health.

She was born in Goshen, the daughter of Joseph and Etta (Crosby) LaFountain. She had lived in Franklin for more than 50 years, moving to the city from Concord. She moved to the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen in 1995.

She worked for J.P. Stevens Woolen Mills in Northfield for several years. She later worked at the Peabody Home in Franklin in the housekeeping department and also as a nurse's aide.

She was predeceased by her husband, Guy Kidder, who died in 1959.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Kidder of Franklin and Gerard Kidder of Weirs Beach; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Albert LaFountain of Lake Isabella, Calif.

A private service will be held for the family at the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home in Tilton.

Spring burial will be held in Franklin Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Resident Fund, Merrimack County Nursing Home, 325 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen 03303.

Bernice L. Regan, GOFFSTOWN

Wednesday, March 1, 2000

GOFFSTOWN - Bernice L. "Bunny" Regan, 86, a former area resident, died Sunday at the Hillsborough County Nursing Home in Goffstown.

She was born in Claremont, the daughter of Elmer and Alice (Neal) Wheeler. She was a graduate of Stevens High School in Claremont and Keene State College.

She had been a summer resident of South Newbury for many years before moving there permanently in 1970.

She lived in Derry and Goffstown for the past 15 years.

She lived in Schenectady, N.Y., for many years, and retired from General Electric as a computer operator.

She was predeceased by her husband, Myles Regan, who died in 1973.

She is survived by two nephews, Mark Wheeler of Goffstown and Brian Wheeler of Troy; two grandnieces and a grandnephew.

There will be no calling hours.

Graveside services will be held in the spring in Sunny Plain Cemetery, Bradford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord 03301-5022.

Chadwick Funeral Service of New London is in charge of the arrangements.

Bernard M. LeVengie, MILLBURY, Mass.

Wednesday, March 1, 2000

MILLBURY, Mass. - Bernard M. LeVangie, 55, a former Hillsboro resident, died Monday at home.

He was born in Chelsea, Mass., the son of Joseph and Dorothy (McKenna) LeVangie. He was a graduate of Walpole High School and served with the U.S. Navy.

He moved to Hillsboro in 1979 with his parents and then to Florida in 1987, where he was a chef with Disney World. In 1944, he moved to Millbury, Mass., where he was employed by several area restaurants.

He was a member of the American Legion in Walpole, Mass. He enjoyed fishing and playing darts.

In addition to his father of Hillsborough, he is survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visiting hours will be tomorrow from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Jellison Funeral Home, 77 West Main St., Hillsboro.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated tomorrow at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Church Street, Hillsboro.

Private burial will be in Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree, Mass.

Paul S. Liscord Jr., PETERBOROUGH

PETERBOROUGH - Paul S. Liscord Jr., 74, a former area resident, died Feb. 23 after a long battle with prostate cancer.

He was born in Hartford, Conn., the son of Paul and Ethel (Seaver Wood) Liscord. He had lived in Windsor, Conn., Doylestown, Pa., and Hopkinton.

He was a graduate of the Loomis School in Windsor, Conn., and a 1948 graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover.

He served in Europe with the 3rd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, as a radio technician from 1945 to 1946. He achieved the rank of technical sergeant, 4th class, and was involved in the final reduction and occupation of Nazi Germany.

After World War II, he pursued a career as a casualty actuary. He worked for the Travelers Insurance Co. in Hartford, Conn., from 1948 to 1970 and rose to the position of vice president for casualty actuary operations. He later joined the Insurance Co. of North America in Philadelphia, managing its casualty actuarial department from 1971 to 1975. He also worked for the New Hampshire Department of Insurance in Concord and the Massachusetts Insurance Rating Bureau in Boston, where he was chief actuary.

He founded his own consulting firm, Liscord, Ward and Roy, in Concord in 1977. He retired in 1990.

He was a member of the Casualty Actuarial Society of America, serving as president in 1973.

He has a passion for singing, and sang most of his life in school glee clubs and at the community Congregational churches to which he belonged. He also sang with the Monadnock Chorus, the New Hampshire Friendship Chorus, the Concord Vocal Octet and the Concord Chorale, serving as its president. His association with singing groups offered him several opportunities to perform and travel throughout Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, New Zealand and Australia. He also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City on two occasions.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (MacDonald) Liscord; two daughters, Jean Kelly of Windsor, Conn., and Nadine Bothwell of Bedford; two sons, Paul Liscord III of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Thomas Liscord of Wayne, Maine; and eight grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held March 12 at 2 p.m. at the First Church in Windsor, Congregational, 107 Palisado Avenue, Windsor, Conn.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Research Center, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, 1 Medical Drive, Lebanon, 03756.

The Carmon Funeral Home of Windsor, Conn., is in charge of arrangements.

John D. Windhurst, WARNER

Tuesday, February 29, 2000

WARNER - John D. Windhurst, 51, of Brown Road, died Feb. 19 at Concord Hospital after a short battle with cancer.

He was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., the son of John Windhurst and Jean (Crawford) Landsman. He lived in Hopkinton for 35 years before moving to Warner last year.

He worked as a maintenance contractor for the Hopkinton school system and the town of Hopkinton.

He served with the U.S. Marines as a sergeant in the 5th Marine Corps and as a rifleman in the 1st Marine Division. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969, after which he served two years in the Marine Reserves. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Rifle Marksman Badge.

He established a memorial for those who died in Vietnam in Contoocook Village and also assisted in the Hopkinton school science fairs.

He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the American Legion Post No. 81 in Contoocook and a member of the Montshire Mycological Club.

He loved hunting, fishing, trapping, looking for wild mushrooms and spending time with his two dogs, Bonnie and Clyde.

He was predeceased by his sister, Kim Windhurst.

He is survived by his father, of Hopkinton; his mother, of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; his wife, Martha (Weeks) Windhurst of Warner; three brothers, David Windhurst of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Scott Windhurst and Eric Windhurst, both of Hopkinton; two sisters, Gail Carroll of Scotsdale, Ariz., and Lisa Terry of Smithfield, Va.; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Friday at noon at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Hopkinton. The Rev. Hays Junkin will officiate. The family will greet friends and family at their home at 151 Brown Rd., Warner, following the service.

Memorial donations may be made to the Warner Rescue Squad, c/o Chief Dick Brown, Kearsarge Mountain Road, Warner 03278.

John D. Windhurst, WARNER

Wednesday, March 1, 2000

WARNER - A memorial service for John D. Windhurst, 51, of Brown Road, who died Feb. 19 will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Hopkinton. The family will greet friends at their home at 151 Brown Road immediately after the service.

Due to inaccurate information given to the Monitor, the time of the service published yesterday was incorrect.

Michael T. Smith, NORTHWOOD

Tuesday, February 29, 2000

NORTHWOOD - Michael T. Smith, 20, of Gulch Mountain Road, died Feb. 16 at home after a lifelong battle with muscular dystrophy.

He was born in Lewiston, Maine, the son of Bryant Lessard and Cindy Bowley. He was the adopted son of Jeanne Smith of Northwood.

He was a member of the Bow Lake Baptist Church of Strafford.

He is survived by his parents and adopted mother; his fiancée, Lisa Davis of Northwood; and three adopted brothers, Todd Smith of Northwood, Sid Smith of White River Junction, Vt., and Joe Smith of Portsmouth.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bow Lake Baptist Church in Strafford.

The Perkins Funeral Home of Pittsfield is in charge of arrangements.
