EDWARD ERVIN CONNARY

Edward (Eddie) Ervin Connary, 86, died on Friday morning, November 7, 2003 at his residence in North Stratford, with his wife and family by his side.

He was born on July 27, 1917 in North Stratford, the son of Edward Joseph and Hazel (Mason) Connary. Mr. Connary attended Stratford schools and was a 1935 graduate of Stratford High School. He was married to Lena Carrier on August 9, 1943. The couple resided in Bloomfield for several years before moving to Stratford in 1953. Mr. Connary worked as a farmer and later as a plumber for several North Country businesses. He also worked as a car salesman for Crest Auto in Colebrook, B & J Auto in Berlin and Hayes Ford in Newport, Vt.

Eddie was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, sugaring, and riding his ATV. He also enjoyed working with his hands, creating clocks and lamps. Eddie will be remembered as a true family man who enjoyed raising his six children.

Edward Ervin Connary is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lena Connary of Stratford; three sons, E. Harlan Connary and Ronald B. Connary, both of Stratford, and Ervin T. Connary of Groveton; three daughters, Jayne Leigh of Groveton, Susan Connary of Stratford and Mary Lepine of Groveton; a sister, Delia Cushing of Bethlehem; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Crawford.

Calling hours were private. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, November 9 at the Sacred Heart Church in North Stratford. Internment will be in Fairview Cemetery in North Stratford at a later date.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to Sacred Heart Church in North Stratford, NH 03590. Services were entrusted to Newman Funeral Home of Colebrook.

JAMES KEAZER

James C. "Bill" Keazer Jr., 89, of Colebrook, died on Thursday, November 6, 2003 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital.

Mr. Keazer was born on August 14, 1914 in East Colebrook on the family farm, son of the late James "Carmi" Sr. and Eva (Cook) Keazer.

Bill owned, operated and worked on the Keazer family farm until his recent illness. He enjoyed sugaring, hunting and fishing, and did guide work in his earlier years. He was the cornerstone of the family and will be remembered for his love of farming and his family.

Mr. Keazer is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary (Peabody) Keazer of Colebrook; two sons, Bradley Keazer and wife Gail of Manchester, Conn. and Robert Keazer and wife Dorothy of Colebrook; six grandchildren and one great-grandson; a sister, Annie Smith and husband Tom of Mt. Dora, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Keazer is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon, November 9 at the Jenkins Funeral Home, with The Reverend Oliver Northcott officiating. An interment service followed at the Colebrook Village Cemetery.

HARRIET JOYCE LAURIE

Harriet Joyce Laurie, 63, of Pittsburg, died on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in Stewartstown.

She was born on October 6, 1940 in Windsor, Vt., the daughter of Ulysses and Arlene (Boyde) Gardner. Mrs. Laurie was a 1958 graduate of Woodstock Union High School in Woodstock, Vt. She was married to Wesley Laurie on June 21, 1958. The Lauries lived in Meriden, N.H., and later moved to Sunapee. She was employed for many years by the Dorr Woolen Mill in Newport, N.H., and later as a special education teacher by the Sunapee school system.

She enjoyed outdoor life, especially hunting. She shot many deer, and killed the largest moose taken in the state of New Hampshire in 1996. She was a member of the Audubon Society and the Pittsburg Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club.

Mrs. Laurie is survived by her husband, Wesley Laurie of Pittsburg; a son, Kurt Laurie of Sunapee; a daughter, Brenda Williams of Pittsburg; a sister, Diane Ouellet of Lakeland, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held in the Spring. Arrangements are entrusted to Newman Funeral Home.

PATRICIA ANN OLSON

Patricia A. Olson, 64, of Clarksville, died on Thursday, November 6, 2003 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook.

She was born on July 11, 1939 in Three Rivers, Mass., the daughter of Walter T. and Anna (Munic) Wilga. Mrs. Olson attended school in Worcester, Mass., and was graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1957. She was married to the late Roy E. Olson on June 25, 1960. After high school she attended cosmetology school. The Olsons lived in Worcester until the mid 1980s when they moved to New Boston, Mass., and finally to Clarksville in 2000. Mrs. Olson enjoyed family life, shopping, gardening and reading.

Mrs. Olson is survived by a son, Mark Olson of Auburn, Mass.; two daughters, Debra Morabito and Mrs. Brian (Teresa) Bissonnette, both of Stewartstown; two brothers, Walter Wilga of Millbury, Mass., and Ronald Wilga of Worcester, Mass.; a sister, Joyce Monopoli of West Richland, Wash.; seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, Destiny. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Olson in July, 2003, and by a grandson, Joey Morabito, in 2000.

Calling hours were held on Saturday, November 8 at the Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Albert Bellefeuille officiating. Internment will be private.

EDWARD BENOIT

Edward W. "Frenchy" Benoit, 75, of Groveton, died on November 24, 2003 at Dart-mouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. Born on August 27, 1928 in Stewartstown, he was a son of the late Hector and Florence (Thibeault) Benoit, and had been a resident of Groveton since moving there from Stewartstown in 1962.

Before retiring in 1991 he worked for 25 years for James River Paper Company in Groveton. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton. He loved to "travel" around from Groveton to Lancaster, and sometimes as far as Colebrook. He loved visiting with friends and family and having his coffee breaks.

"Frenchy" is survived by his wife of 49 years, Simone A. (Dube) Benoit of Groveton; four daughters, Pauline Gibbs of Stratford, Noella Begin of Lancaster, Diane Brooks of Clarksville and Lucille Cunningham of Canaan; four sons, Raymond Benoit of Groveton, Andre Benoit of Lunenburg, Daniel Benoit of Lancaster and Dennis Benoit of Groveton. He has 19 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters, Rose Breault of Maine, Irene Jeffers of Colebrook, Palmyra Dube of Milan, Aleda Maurais and Agnes Brooks, both of Canaan. He was predeceased by a grandson, Jeremy Begin, on July 30, 2001; by a brother, Leon Benoit, and a sister, Germaine Caron.

Calling hours were held on Sunday, November 30 at the Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in Groveton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday at the St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton, with Fr. Daniel Deveau officiating. Burial followed in in the Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster.

Memorial donations may be made in Edward's name to St. Francis Xavier Church, 10 State Street, Groveton, NH 03582.

EUGENIE POULIN

Mrs. Eugenie L. (Champagne) Poulin, 99, of Island Pond and formerly of Stratford, died on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at the North Country Hospital in Newport, Vt.

Mrs. Poulin was born on November 15, 1904 in St. George, Quebec, the daughter of the late Gedeon and Marie Champagne.

She was a homemaker and worked as a cook in the logging camps with her husband, Willie Poulin. She was also employed at the plywood factory in Stratford for a number of years. She loved to cook, and enjoyed playing bingo and cards. She will be remembered fondly for her famous homemade beans and for her love of family and family gatherings.

Mrs. Poulin is survived by five children, Lawrence Poulin and his wife Saba of Florida, Rose Morris of Goffstown, Anita King and her husband Jim of Island Pond, Frances Tetreault and her husband Richard of Stratford, and Joseph Poulin of Glastonbury, Conn.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Poulin was preceded in death by her loving husband, Willie Poulin, in 1980, two daughters, Rita Platt and Denise Curtis, an infant son, five brothers and four sisters.

Calling hours were held on Friday, November 28 at the Jenkins Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stratford, with The Reverend Daniel Deveau as celebrant. An interment service followed at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in North Stratford.

RUBY A. RAINAULT

Essex County Deputy Sheriff Ruby A. Rainault, 54, of Guildhall, died in the line of duty on Monday, November 24, 2003 in Lunenburg, Vt.

Born in Elkhart, Ind., on July 14, 1949, she was the daughter of Walter and Dorothy (Conaway) Daum.

She was raised in Indiana and resided there until 1980, when she moved to Randolph, N.H. In 1989 she moved to Guildhall, where she had been a Deputy Sheriff for five years. Ruby taught aerobics and was a line dancing instructor. Her favorite activities were motorcycling and snowmobiling.

The family includes her husband, Gilbert Rainault of Guildhall; three sons, Jason Rainault of Colebrook, Benjamin Rainault of Laconia and Travis Rainault of St. Johnsbury; three daughters, Angel Rainault of Newport, Vt., Amanda Kelly Rainault of Groveton and Amanda Ariel Renault of Guildhall; two sisters, Marilyn Glassburn and Deborah Snell, both of Indiana.

Visiting hours were held on Friday afternoon and evening, November 28 at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A funeral service was held on Saturday morning at the Lancaster School auditorium, with a reception to follow in the Guild Hall in Guildhall.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Ruby's memory to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, One Hanover Park, 16633 North Dallas Parkway, Suite 600, Addison, TX 75001.

ARTHUR BROWNG

Korean War veteran Arthur "Art" R. Brown, 72 ,of Bog Road in Stratford, died peacefully at his stepson's house in Lunen-burg on Friday, February 6, 2004, where he had lived for the past three weeks.

Born on March 12, 1931 in Grafton, N.H., he was the son of Carl and Ethel (Portigue) Brown, and lived in the Stratford area most of his life. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. Before retiring, he worked for Gilman Mill for 20 years. He still mowed the lawns at Indian River Trailer Park in Lancaster, and was already talking about mowing again this summer. He also enjoyed plowing in the wintertime, hunting and fishing.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife of 10 years, Joanne (Anas-kowich) Brown of Stratford and Lunenburg; a stepson, Edward, and his wife Sheila McFarland of Lunenburg; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

His stepdaughter, Sandra Cass, predeceased him.

Calling hours were held on Sunday, February 8 at the Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in Groveton. Funeral services were held on Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Lawrence Clough officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the spring in the Northumberland Cemetery.

CLIFTON HIPKINS

Clifton Hipkins, a lifelong resident of Connecticut who had a lifelong love affair with the Northeast Kingdom and its people, died on February 6, 2004 of a heart attack. He was 80 years old.

Mr. Hipkins was an expert fly-fisherman and wing shooter of the "King of Gamebirds," the Ruffed Grouse. Harold Stearns of Averill was his hunting and fishing partner. They began their friendship at Quimby's as young boys. At that time Hortense Quimby's father was running the fishing camp.

Their pursuit of fly-fishing and grouse hunting covered the entire Northeast Kingdom and Eastern Townships of Canada. Back then the last paved road ended in Lyndonville. There were no road signs or signs posted "Private" or "Prive."

They often hunted and fished with Customs Agent friends, and would occasionally cross the border 10 times a day with just a wave. At the end of the day they'd stop in at Hamp's in Norton Mills for a few cold beers with friends, including Hamp and his wife, Babe.

Through the years Clif made many friends in the North Country. He leaves behind his wife Louise of 53 years; his sons, Clifton Jr., David and Stuart; a daughter, Carol; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. His son David will truly miss the time spent with him in the coverts and streams of the North Country, having been his partner for the better part of the last 40 years. He'll miss his guidance, friendship and is thankful for having instilled in him his father's love of the great outdoors.

MALVINA JAROSZ

Malvina E. "Vangie" (Demers) Jarosz, 85, of Dunbarton, died on February 9, 2004 at a Manchester hospital.

She was born on December 16, 1918 in Concord, Vt., the daughter of Richard and Grace (Sortwell) Demers.

She was educated in Cole-brook, moving to Manchester after high school graduation. She had lived in Dunbarton since 1970. While living in Manchester, she was the president of the PTA and was a member of the Women's Club and Garden Club in Dunbarton.

Mrs. Jarosz enjoyed flowers and gardening, and was a gourmet cook and cake decorator. She attended St. Paul United Methodist Church in Manchester and Hillside United Methodist Church in Grasmere.

Her husband, Russell Jarosz, died in 1983.

Family members include a daughter, Frena Jarosz of Dunbarton; three sisters, Cleona Frizzell of Stewartstown, Madelyn Covell of Westfield, Mass. and Juanita Bunnell of Easthampton, Mass.; nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., corner of Harrison Street, Manchester. The funeral is Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, corner of Smyth and Bruce roads. The Rev. Richard Gray will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688, or the American Cancer Society, 360 Route 101, Unit 8, Bedford, NH 03110.

JOANNA MANNING

Joanna Tewksbury Manning, resident of Atria/The Greens in Hanover, died on Friday, January 30, 2004 at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Maureen Hall.

Joanna lived each chapter of her life fully and well. The younger of two sisters, she was born to Frederick Jackson Tewksbury and Joanna Belle Sargent Tewksbury on September 28, 1910. She attended high school in Wells River, Vt., and Woodsville, graduating in 1928. She attended the University of Vermont, where she graduated in the class of 1932. As a freshman she met her match, Philip Emerson Manning, an outstanding basketball player, dancing partner, and fellow educator. They were married on August 15, 1932 and were on their 65th year of marriage when Phil died on November 5, 1996.

Raising their two daughters, Joanna Phyllis Manning Ellis, (married to G. Winston Ellis) of West Newbury, Vt., and Maureen Manning Hall (married to Leland "Pete" Hall) of Hanover was her devotion. This family grew through the years to include eight grandchildren and their spouses, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She remembered her teaching as the most fulfilling work she could have chosen. She blended classroom instruction with commitment to valuing and advising extra-curricular activities, including the well-remembered senior class trips to New York City. This career chapter included 27 years of teaching social studies and business education in Vermont high schools in Danville, Bakersfield, Swanton, Windsor, S. Royalton, Randolph, Canaan, Blue Mountain Union, and in Pittsburg, junior and senior high school. As a retiree she taught 55 Alive classes in Vermont and Florida.

She served, often as an officer, in the following organizations: Delta Delta Delta Sorority; Diamond Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star; Delta Kappa Gamma, National Honorary Educational Society for Teachers; Local and State Retired Teachers Association; Library Trustee; Danville School Board; Vermont Club in Florida; and several community women's clubs. She was a member of the Danville Congregational Church.

The Mannings returned to Danville, Vt., to restore their home and enjoy the community. When Phil needed long-term care in 1994 the couple moved to Hanover. She was greatly loved and admired and will be greatly missed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Manning Helping Hand Award, c/o Danville School, Danville, VT 05828, or to the church or charity of one's choice. Memorial services in Danville and a burial in South Ryegate will be held in the summer. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover.
