EVELINE MATTISON

Eveline (Forrest) Mattison, 78, of Interlachen, Fla., died on February 21, 2005 after battling with cancer.

Mrs. Mattison was born in Lincoln, Maine, on March 14, 1926, and had lived for many years in the Allenstown-Concord area of New Hampshire.

From 1978 to 1985 she owned and operated Evie's Place, a service station and convenience store on Route 3 in Allenstown.

Members of the family include her husband, William Mattison; and three children, Pastor Edward Dauphinais of Portland, Ore, Gail Dauphinais of West Stewartstown, and James Dauphinais of Nashua.

MARY STICKNEY

Mary Elizabeth Stickney, 90, of Colebrook, died on Thursday, February 24, 2005 at her daughter's home in Yarmouth, Maine.

Elizabeth was married to Earl Shallow, and they lived and raised their family on Parsons Street in Colebrook. Several years after Earl's death she was married to Bill Richardson, and lived at Diamond Pond in Stewartstown. Most recently she lived at Monadnock Village in Colebrook.

Born in Colebrook on February 22, 1915, she was the daughter of Dean Stickney and Ellen Pierce. She was graduated from Colebrook Academy, Class of 1933. Lib operated a beauty shop at her home on Parsons Street for years, later working at Tillotson Rubber Factory and then at the Beecher Falls Factory. She most enjoyed her family, her garden and her good pal, Buster the cat.

She is survived by three children, Mary Beth Washburn, David E. Shallow and Mary Ellen Hesselbacher; three grandchildren and one great-grandson, Evan Russo.

No public memorial services will be held. The family expressed appreciation to all who sent flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the animal shelter of one's choice.

WINONA HANSON

Winona Louise Allen Hanson, 73, of Epsom, N.H., died on Sunday, May 29, 2005 at the Epsom Healthcare Center due to a sudden illness.

Mrs. Hanson was born on December 21, 1931, in West Stewartstown, daughter of the late Annie Mae Ricker Allen and Leon Mabry Allen.

Mrs. Hanson grew up primarily in the North Country. She lived in Guildhall and the Maidstone area, where she married and worked as a homemaker. Later she moved west to California and resided in Texas for a short time. She then returned to live in Portland, Maine, for a number of years, eventually moving to Manchester, and to the Epsom area to live out the remainder of her life.

Mrs. Hanson is survived by two daughters, MaryAnn McDade Huskey and husband Keith of Lancaster, and Jill Rowe Gadwah and her husband Mitch of Manchester; three sons, James McDade and his wife Kim of Guildhall, Harold Rowe of Warren, Maine, and Arnold Rowe of Colebrook; a brother, Stanley Allen and his wife Shirley of Lake Dallas, Texas; three half-brothers, Lyford Parker and his companion Reona Hartlen of Colebrook, Larry Parker and his companion, Annie Lawton of Columbia, Lynford Parker and his wife Carolyn of Earlton, N.Y.; two half-sisters, Evangeline Parker Howe and her husband Lloyd of Stewartstown, and Truliene Parker Gaudette of Columbia; two step-sisters, Joanne Parker Davis of Colebrook and Beverly Parker Nicholson of Pittsburg. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and one aunt

Mrs. Hanson is proceeded in death by her parents; by two sons, Neil Henry McDade and Timothy Allen Rowe; two daughters, Marsha Lynn Mc-Dade and Juanita Louise Mc-Dade Bunnell; a brother, Randolph Mabry Allen; a sister, Leona Mae Allen; two half-sisters, Emily Parker Seaman and Theo Parker; and two step-brothers, Leonard Parker and Bertram Parker.

Calling hours will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook, where a funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. An interment service will be held at the Colebrook Village Cemetery.

JOHN OWEN

John H. Owen, 95, of Stewartstown, died suddenly on Monday evening, May 30, 2005 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital.

Mr. Owen was born on July 31, 1909 in Stewartstown, son of the late Leon and Eva (Brown) Owen.

He was a lifelong farmer, leaving school at an early age to work on the family farm to enable his siblings to attend high school. He also drove a team of horses, pulling the snowroller for a number of years as an additional source of income. He enjoyed working for Bill Heath in the woods and at Diamond Pond for different companies. He retired from farming at the age of 75.

He was a charter member and Past President of the Coös County Farm Bureau and past selectman for the Town of Stewartstown. He will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt, and he snowmobiled into his mid- to late eighties.

Mr. Owen is survived by his daughter, Sheryl Collins and her husband Bill of Stewartstown; a sister, Althea Gray of Canaan; six grandchildren, Danny Owen and his wife, Tracy, Bruce Owen and his wife Louise, Randall Owen, Linda Owen and her fiancé Dan Auger, Brian Collins and his fiancée Monda Placey, and Jon Collins and his wife Katie; eight great-grandchildren, Ashley Hodge, Candy Varney, Jay Varney, Tyler Rumfelt, Adam Rumfelt, Eliza-beth Collins, Sarah Collins and Christian Owen; a great-great-grandchild, Jayden Hodge; a sister-in-law and special friend, Mabel Owen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Owen is preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathleen (Frizzell) Owen; two sons, Barry Owen and Gary Owen; and fourteen brothers and sisters, Mavis Corbett, Madeline Gorman, Almore Daley, Dencie Shallow, Leona Noyes, Bessie Furgerson, Leonard Owen, Nelson Owen, Holman Owen, Bill Owen, Rodney Heath, Quinten Heath, Charlie Heath and Sherburn Heath.

Calling hours were held on Wednesday evening, June 1 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at the North Hill Church in Stewartstown, with interment to follow at the Stewartstown Hollow Cemetery. Pallbearers are Danny Owen, Bruce Owen, Randall Owen, Brian Collins, Jon Collins and Jay Varney.

PAULINE RAMSEY

Pauline Ramsey, 92, of North Woodstock, died on May 30, 2005 at Lafayette Center in Franconia.

Born in West Stewartstown on February 12, 1913, she was the daughter of Joseph and Cornelia (Valentine) Gamarche. She attended West Stewartstown schools and lived in North Woodstock for many years.

She was a nurse at Linwood Medical Center in Lincoln for many years. She was a member of Pemi Valley Church in Woodstock, and of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, Clyde Ramsey, died in 1998. The family includes several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 2 at 1 p.m. at the Woodstock Cemetery, Route 3, Woodstock, with the Rev. John Muehlke, pastor of Pemi Valley Church, officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Pemi Valley Church, Route 3, Woodstock, NH 03293. Edmund Fournier Funeral Home of North Woodstock is handling arrangements.

ROSEMARY SMITH

Rosemary Hirst Smith, 86, of Lancaster, died on May 29, 2005 at her home. Rosemary was born February 5, 1919 in Detroit, Mich., in a house her father built. Her parents, immigrants from England, were Charles and Clara Hirst.

Rosemary was graduated from McKenzie High School and Wayne State University, and taught public school in Michigan for three years. She attended Chicago Theological Seminary from 1943-46, graduating with an MA in religious education. She taught religion in Troy, Ohio, for two years, for the Troy Council of Churches.

In 1948 Rosemary was married to Curtis Smith in Detroit, and moved to Canaan, where Curtis was a pastor in the Grace United Methodist Church. After their three children were in school Rosemary took up teaching again, tutoring both children and adults in the states of Maryland, Delaware and New Hampshire.

Rosemary was a member of the Methodist Church since childhood. She always worked in the church, especially in Sunday School and United Methodist Women.

Rosemary was a member of the local chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). She was an avid reader with wide-ranging tastes and was a diligent correspondent, keeping in touch through letters with family and friends everywhere. She was a great one for walking places. One of her favorite hikes was Pine Mountain in blueberry season. She loved card games and all sorts of word puzzles, especially crossword puzzles.

Rosemary is survived by her husband of 57 years, Curtis W. Smith; her children, Margaret C. Smith of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Susanna P. Smith of Seattle, Wash., Philip R. Smith of Providence, R.I.; two grandchildren; her sister, Marjorie Hirst Parrish of Chicago, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Two brothers, Mason and Charles Hirst, died previously.

Rosemary was much loved by her family and friends for her kindness, sensitivity, intelligence and warmth. She will be greatly missed. A memorial service for Rosemary will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at

Christ United Methodist Church in Lancaster. A reception will follow at the Curtis home, 11 Grove Street. The family requests no flowers; contributions to Christian missions or to relief work may be sent to the Christ United Methodist Church, 16 Church Street, Lancaster, NH 03584. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster.

NOEL AMES

Noel W. Ames, 69, of Granby, Mass., died on June 26, 2005 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook.

He was born on December 26, 1935 in New Rochelle, N.Y., the son of Earle and Harriet (Wonson) Ames. Mr. Ames was graduated from The Gunnery in Washington, Conn., and went on to attend Yale and later New York University. He was married to Kathryn McNamee on September 9, 1959.

Mr. Ames worked for Lane Construction from 1962 until his retirement in the late 1990s, as an estimating engineer. During this time Mr. Lane moved about New England several times, finally settling in Granby, Mass. He enjoyed camping and horses.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn Ames of Granby; two sons, Charles Ames of Pittsburg, Pa., Christopher Ames of Hinsdale, Mass.; a daughter, Cynthia Ames of New Braintree, Mass.; and a brother. Oliver of Georgia.

Calling hours were held on Monday, June 27 at the Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. Funeral services are private. Those who wish to make donations in memory of Noel W. Ames may give to the Errol Rescue Squad, 127 Main Street Errol, NH 03579, in care of Elsie Hall.

DORIS BRAINARD

Doris Wadsworth Brainard, 98, of Walpole, died at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, on Saturday, July 2, 2005.

She was born on October 31, 1906, and was a graduate of Boston University School of Religious Education and Social Work.

Mrs. Brainard made her home in Walpole from 1950 until she moved to Westmoreland. She taught school until her 1944 marriage to B. Ralph Brainard, who died in 1985. Mrs. Brainard was a longtime active member of the Audubon Society. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Colebrook and of the Congregational Church of Walpole.

Mrs. Brainard is survived by two stepdaughters, Hazel Greene of Vancouver, Wash., and Ruth Lessard of Southwick, Mass.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Walpole on Thursday, July 7, with the Rev. Larry Siebrands officiating. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place in Colebrook. Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls, Vt., is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Congregational Church in Walpole, NH 03608; or to the New Hampshire Audubon Society in Concord.

LEONEL LACASSE

Leonel Roland LaCasse, 63, of West Stewartstown and formerly of Bloomfield, died on Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at the Coös County Nursing Hospital.

Mr. LaCasse was born November 4, 1941 in North Stratford, son of the late Armand C. and Antoinette G. (Roby) LaCasse. He served proudly in the Army, enlisting in 1959 and serving during the Panama Canal crisis. He transferred to Germany, where he was honorably discharged in 1965. After returning to the North Country, he worked for Rainville & Ladd Store as a meat cutter, and for Washburn Lumber for several years. He was a member of the Northland American Legion Post 47 in Canaan, and of the Nulhegan VFW Post 5243 in Stratford.

Mr. LaCasse is survived by four brothers, Raymond LaCasse Sr. of Sterling, Ky., Freeman "Buddy" LaCasse and his wife Odella of Cherokee Village, Ark., Donald LaCasse and companion Donna Gould of Colebrook, and Robert LaCasse and his wife Jackie of Hooksett; three sisters, Virginia Johnson and her husband Ronald of Nashua, Dianne Worth and her husband David of Island Pond, and Susan Lepine and her husband Daniel of Beecher Falls; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 16 at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Canaan, with The Reverend Craig Cheney as celebrant. An interment service will be held at St. Brendan's Catholic Cemetery in Colebrook, with military honors to follow.

ROBERT LANK

Robert A. "Lankie" Lank, 55, of Pittsburg, died suddenly Sunday evening, July 3, 2005 on his property in Pittsburg. Mr. Lank was born May 13, 1950 in Eastport, Maine.

He served honorably in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He worked as the lead electrician for the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Mass., for 16 years before retiring in 2002 after a successful liver transplant. His love of the North Country resulted in his move to Pittsburg in September, 2002.

He was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He particularly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, sitting around a campfire on his property in Pittsburg. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and good friend to all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Lank is survived by his loving wife, Christine (Lesper-ance) Lank of Pittsburg; three daughters, Jill Sullivan and her husband Matt of Peabody, Mass., Amy Cornell and her husband Derek of Canaan, and Ann Lank of Lynn, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Taylor and Brian Cornell of Canaan.

Calling hours were held on Wednesday afternoon, July 6 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. Private family services will be held at a later date.

ROBERT LEIGH

Robert E. Leigh, 87, of East Colebrook, died on Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Leigh was born on April 15, 1918 in Canaan, son of the late Thomas H. and Annie M. (Howe) Leigh.

He worked as a woodsman and owned his own dairy farm for over 40 years. He also worked at the Coös County Farm in West Stewartstown, and several area Christmas tree farms. He was an outdoorsman and loved nature. He enjoyed seeing others having a good time, and especially enjoyed spending time at home with the company of neighbors. His regular evening coffee visit at 7 p.m. became an important part of his daily routine.

He was a simple man, who was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Laura A. (Frizzell) Leigh, who passed away on August 8, 2002, and he will be remembered as loving brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all.

Mr. Leigh is survived by a son, Frederick H. Leigh and his wife Patricia of Florence, Mass.; three daughters, Roberta E. Ramsay and her husband James of Concord, JoAnne E. Brown of Concord and Donna M. Beal and her husband Pepper of Machias, Maine; a sister, Myrtle Rowell of Compton, Quebec; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Leigh is preceded in death by his parents; by his loving wife, Laura A. Leigh; a son, Rolland E. Leigh; and a sister, Blanche Danforth.

Calling hours and a funeral service were held on Saturday afternoon, July 2 at the Jenkins Funeral Home. An interment service will be held at the Colebrook Village Cemetery.

PAUL MARUCA

Paul Maruca, 91, formerly of Errol, died on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the Coös County Nurs-ng Hospital in West Stewartstown.

He was born in Waterbury, Conn., on December 31, 1913, the son of Carmine and Giovana Maruca, and had lived in Connecticut until 1975. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Maruca was employed as a forklift operator for Scovill Manufacturing in Connecticut. He was a member of St. Pius X Church in Errol, was an avid fly tier and fly fisherman, and a member of a fishing club in Waterbury, Conn.

He is survived by a daughter, grandchildren and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday morning, July 1 at St. Pius X Church in Errol. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury. Calling hours were held on Friday morning at St. Pius X Church prior to the funeral mass. Arrangements are by the Bryant Funeral Home in Berlin.
