MICHAEL ORT

Michael J. Ort, 49, of Gorham, died on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at his home.

He was born in Fort Madison, Iowa, on December 6, 1957, the son of Melbourne L. and Lawanda J. (Turner) Ort, and moved to New England six years ago.

He had resided in Gorham for the past year, having been employed as a special education teacher in Colebrook for a year and a half before going to work in the Berlin school system. He enjoyed hiking, snowshoeing, skiing and snowmobiling, and loved the Great North Woods. He was predeceased by his father, Melbourne L.Ort.

Members of the family include his wife, Kelly (Gaffney) Ort of Gorham; a daughter Sarabeth Emily Sims of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; a son, Arron Michael Ort of Vernon, Conn.; two grandchildren; his mother, Lawanda Miller of Fort Madison, Iowa; three brothers, Melbourne Ort of Des Moines, Iowa, Gary Ort of Houston, Texas, and Steven Ort of New London, Iowa; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

CLEMENT PHILBROOK

Clement Earle Philbrook, age 89, of Pittsburg, died on Friday, May 25, 2007 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center in Wilkesboro, N.C.

He was born on October 30, 1917 in Old Town, Maine, to Earle W. and Harriet Crocker Philbrook. He was a member of Farnham United Methodist Church in Pittsburg.

Mr. Philbrook, who preferred being called "Clem," was graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, and Hebron Academy in South Paris. The University of Maine prepared him for graduation from Bryant and Stretton Business College near Boston.

Clem was employed as an accountant with the New England Power Service Company. Later while an employee of Encyclopedia Britannica, he began writing articles and stories and eventually found his niche writing books in the juvenile division. Fifteen of his children's books published, one of which, Captured by the Abnakis, is a Juvenile Literary Guild Selection. Clem's interest in history and sports were reflected in his writings.

At age 65 Clem obtained his real estate broker's license and established a real estate business operating mainly in the Pittsburg area. He maintained his interest in real estate and membership with the New Hampshire Real Estate Commission until age 87.

Clem's popularity as an avid downhill skier reached legendary proportions on the ski slopes of the Northeast. He held the distinction of third in the nation with NASTAR in the senior division at the age of 82.

He loved fly-fishing in the wilderness area bogs near his home, and his joyful display at dancing was indicative of his enormous zest for life. Clem enjoyed traveling with his wife to various parts of the U.S., Canada, the Islands, Mexico and Costa Rica. His first plane ride was at age 75.

Clem was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) a few years ago. After a valiant struggle, his wife of 18 years, Millicent Philbrook, mourns his passing, but feels blessed to have been part of his long and productive life.

Preceding him in death were his wife of nearly 40 years, Leone Fuller Philbrook; his brother, Walter Philbrook; and a sister, Ledora Covell. His mother-in-law, Mary Louise Lomax, passed away on February 13.

Survivors include his wife, Millicent; a sister, Irma Bacon of Ossipee; brothers-in-law Blaine and his wife Kay Lomax of Wilkesboro, and Rhea and his wife Audrey Lomax of Coatesville, Pa.; sisters-in-law Debbie and her husband Angelo Reid of Claymont, Del., and Beverly Craig of Wilkesboro, N.C.; nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of friends.

A celebration of his life will be held in June in Pittsburg, with interment following; the time and day will be announced. Condolences may be sent to 164 Dula Road, Wilkesboro, NC 28697. WILBERT RICHARDSON

Wilbert A. "Whisperin' Bill" Richardson, 93, of Colebrook and formerly of Stewartstown, died early on Thursday morning, May 31, 2007 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital.

Mr. Richardson was born on April 9, 1914, in Corinth, Maine, son of the late Willard C. and Gladys E. (Armstrong) Richardson. He was graduated from N.H. Fay High School in Dexter, Maine, Class of 1932.

arly in his career, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps at Baxter State Park, and later in Pittsburg on the roads near the Connecticut Lakes. He began working for the Beecher Falls Division of Ethan Allen in 1937, retiring as night superintendent in 1976. He was also employed for Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn., from 1942-45. From 1965-85 he made his home at Big Diamond Pond in Stewartstown, and moved to Monadnock Village in Colebrook in 1986.

He loved to snowmobile, and in 1959 he was one of the first owners of a snowmobile in the area. Even at the age of 90, he rode 1,100 miles to Shin Pond in Patten, Maine, with his son and grandson. His love for the sport spawned his active involvement in the Colebrook Ski-Bees, the Bungy Beavers Snowmobile Club and the Swift Diamond Riders.

Mr. Richardson is survived by his two sons, Gary Richardson and his wife Norma of West Stewartstown, and David Richardson and his wife Shirley of Derby, Vt.; two daughters, Patricia Nevers of Concord and Suzanne Haynes of Merrimack; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by his parents; by two brothers; and a sister. At Mr. Richardson's request, there will be no calling hours. Private family services will be held at a later date. CHARLES SEALE

Charles R. Seale, 55, of Farmington, died on June 1, 2007 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

He was born in Rochester, the son of William A. and Jane P. (Adams) Seale, and had resided in Farmington for most of his life. He had previously worked in carpentry, roofing and siding.

The family includes his mother, Jane Brisson of Farmington; five brothers and four sisters, David Seale of Rochester, William Seale of Kentucky, Robert Seale of Farmington, Edmund Seale of Farmington, Arthur Seale of Rochester, Patricia Seale of Canaan, Pamela Parker of Epsom, Carol Seale of Barrington and Janet Seale of Strafford; many nieces and nephews; his aunt, Mabel Lawrence of Epsom; his step-daughter, Holly Balch of Dover; and eight grandchildren.

Calling hours were held on Sunday afternoon at the Peaslee Funeral Home in Farmington.

EDWARD CARR

Edward Everett Carr, 48, of Canaan, died early on Thursday morning, June 14, 2007 at his home, surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. Mr. Carr was born on April 14, 1959 in West Stewartstown, the son of George and Virginia (Pearson) Carr.

He was a graduate of Canaan High School and for a number of years worked in Arizona before returning to Vermont. He was employed at the Beecher Falls Division of Ethan Allen for 20 years, inspecting and repairing furniture. He enjoyed hunting and gardening, but his favorite hobby was fishing. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son and brother, and will be sincerely missed by his family and his many friends at the factory and surrounding area.

Mr. Carr is survived by his loving wife, Kathy (Cavanaugh) Carr of Canaan; three children, Kiya Rodrique of Concord, and Esther Carr and Ezra Carr, both of Canaan; his parents, George and Virginia Carr of Averill; two brothers, Michael Carr of Big Pine Key, Fla., and Pearson Carr and his wife Janet of Canaan; three sisters, Georgiana Carr of Hyde Park, Vt., Gennette Carr of St. Albans, Vt., and Jennifer Earls and her husband Garrett of Williamstown, Vt.; an uncle and three aunts; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Carr was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Stanley Carr.

At his request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Canaan, with The Reverend Robert Lee officiating. An interment service will be held at the Alice Hunt Cemetery, with a reception to immediately follow at St. Paul's.

BETTY CLEGG

Betty Clegg, 70, of Grantham, died while surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

She was born on August 7, 1936 in Patterson, N.J., to the late Guy G. & Nicoline A. (Brack) Portman, and was graduated from the Paterson School System.

Betty met her husband-to-be, Jack Clegg, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church during youth class in 1952, they were married on September 21, 1957. She was graduated from the Paterson General Hospital School of Nursing and Rutgers University. While living in New Jersey, she was employed as a urology nurse with Dr. William Deyo in Ridgewood.

Betty and her family moved to the Upper Valley in 1972. She then began working for Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in dermatology, radiation therapy, discharge planning, and most recently served as risk manager. During this period she earned degrees from the College of Life Long Learning and Keene State College, graduating cum laude at the age of 59. Betty enjoyed gardening and exercise, she was known to many as an amazing cook.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Clegg of Grantham; two daughters, Suellen M. Wallace of Stewartstown and Lauran Elaine Purcell of Lebanon; a son, John A. Clegg of Epsom; a sister, Elaine Helton of Harrison, Tenn.; a brother, Rick Portman of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

WALTER FINSON

Walter R. Finson, 67, of Milan, died on Friday June 15, 2007 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin.

He was born in Berlin on November 19, 1939, the son of John L. and Ethel (Shepherd) Finson, and was a lifelong resident of the Berlin-Milan area. He had been employed by Brown Company, James River Corporation, Crown Vantage and PPA, and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Members of the family include his wife Rita (Cote) Finson of Milan; a son, Eric Finson of Dover; a daughter, Christine Krambeck of Dubuque, Iowa; his father, John L. Finson of West Stewartstown; a brother, Maurice Finson of Milan; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Ethel Finson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday June 20 at the Bryant Funeral Home in Berlin. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will take place at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Milan.

BRUCE JOHNSON

W. Bruce Johnson, 72, of Bedford, N.H., died on June 13, 2007 at Ridgewood Center Genesis Eldercare, following a defiant battle with multiple sclerosis for 44 years.

He was born on December 9, 1934 in Manchester, the son of Robert and A. May (Firman) Johnson. He attended local schools, graduating from West High School in 1952.

Mr. Johnson was a Marine Corps veteran, having served from 1952 to 1955 on active duty and from 1955 to 1960 in the Marine Corps Reserve. He was employed as an electrician for many years at Ralph Pill Electric Supply Company of Concord.

He was a member of Washington Lodge #61 F. and A.M., a lifetime member of Pointer Fish and Game Club, and a 47-year member of American Legion Henry J. Sweeney Post # 2 in Manchester. Mr. Johnson most enjoyed being the handyman around the house and taking care of projects.

Members of his family include his wife of 50 years, Gertrude L. (Hirsch) Johnson; two daughters, Maureen Grande and her husband Tony, and Cheryl Guerrin and her husband Pat; a son, Daniel Johnson and his wife Lydia of Canaan; seven grandchildren; three nieces, Judi Letourneau of Bedford, Wendi Hupfer of Connecticut and Pam Mijal of New York City, N.Y. He was predeceased by his sister, Eileen Mijal in 2000.

Calling hours were held on Monday evening at the Goodwin Funeral Home in Manchester. A graveside service was held on Tuesday morning at Bedford Center Cemetery, officiated by The Rev. Christopher J. Emerson of First Congregational Church. Memorial contributions may be sent to the National Multiple Sclerosis of Central NE, 101A First Avenue, Waltham, MA 02451-1115.

SISTER MARIE THOMAS

Sister Marie Octavie Thomas (Marie-Rémie), a Daughter of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died on Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at Mount Sacred Heart Provincial House Infirmary. Marie Octavie Thomas was born in Magog, Québec, on October 31, 1906, the daughter of Olivier Thomas and Marie Tremblay. She entered her religious congregation on January 2, 1930 and professed her vows with her religious congregation on August 17, 1931.

During her 76 years of religious life, Sister Marie, known to most in the early years as Sister Rémie, taught primary students and worked with resident students in Newport, Vt., from 1931-61, and in Colebrook from 1961-74. For many of those years while in Newport, she taught weekly or summer religious education (catechism) in area parishes and towns, to include Troy, Lowell, Orleans, Barton, Derby Line and Greensboro.

Sister Marie considered herself "semi-retired" during her last few years in Colebrook, but she in fact was always helping someone in a classroom, in supervision of resident students, and as Chapel Sacristan. In 1974 Sister Marie moved to Newport, Vt., where she again continued to serve as Sacristan and receptionist until 1990.

That year Sister Marie joined the retirement community of the United States Province of the Daughters of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where she actively contributed to livening up her companions' day with her keen sense of humor. Sister Marie enjoyed parties and celebrations, and made the most of her 100th birthday celebration on Halloween Day, 2006.

Having outlived her numerous siblings, Sister Marie had remained very close to her loving nieces, who faithfully visited her in Littleton, and even a week ago enjoyed sharing memories and their customary sing-along before leaving. Sister Marie is predeceased by 17 siblings. She is survived by her many nieces and nephews, and by her religious Sisters in the community.

Visiting hours were held at Mount Sacred Heart in Littleton on Thursday afternoon and evening, June 14. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Mount Sacred Heart on Friday morning, and interment took place at the St. Mary Cemetery in Newport. Arrangements were under the direction of Ross Funeral Home in Littleton and the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport. FRANCIS CHAPPLE

Francis "George" Chapple, 59, of Columbia, died peacefully early on Saturday morning, June 23, 2007 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Chapple was born on June 24, 1947 in West Stewartstown, son of Francis Gardner and Mary Louise (Washburn) Chapple.

He was raised on the family farm in Columbia and resided on Meridan Hill Road all of his life. As a young man, he loved racing at the Riverside Speedway in Groveton. He worked for the Stratford Plywood Mill and later for Campbell's Stationery for over 19 years, and for almost nine years, he worked in the rough mill at Beecher Falls Division of Ethan Allen. A kid at heart, his many hobbies included playing cards, hunting, fishing and gardening, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and his six grandsons.

Mr. Chapple is survived by his loving wife, Patricia (Peterson) Chapple of Columbia; two children, Michael Francis Chapple of Bloomfield and Melissa Ann Desaindes and her husband Norman of Columbia; his mother, Mary Louise Chapple of Columbia; five brothers and sisters, Walter Chapple, Nancy Chapple, Mary Elizabeth Simpson and Conrad Chapple, all of Columbia, and James Chapple of Stratford; six grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Chapple was preceded in death by his father, Francis Gardner Chapple, and a sister, Susan Jewell.

Calling hours and a funeral service, officiated by The Reverend Randall Scheri, were held on Monday evening, June 25 at the Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook. An interment service for Donald R. Covill, 90, of Pittsburg, who died on February 10, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, at the Pittsburg Hollow Cemetery on Hill Road in Pittsburg.

ROBERT TEMPLETON

Robert F. "Bob" Templeton, 73, of Randolph, Mass., died peacefully at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth on June, 18, 2007.

Born in Boston, he was a proud Navy veteran and a member of the AmVets. He had resided in Randolph for the past 30 years. He was retired from Maintenance at Dupont of Boston, where he worked for over 20 years.

Robert was a warm, compassionate man. He was a passionate Red Sox Fan who enjoyed bowling and traveling. Bob was known for his sense of humor, which will be sorely missed. He was the beloved spouse of Audrey Jackson, formerly of Canaan; loving father of Linda Templeton of Manchester, Conn., Wendy Thornley and her husband Fred of Hartford, Conn., and Scott Templeton of Windsor Locks, Conn.; uncle to his cherished niece, Karen White of Randolph; devoted brother of Connie DelVisco of California, Esther Capulli of Arizona, Donald J. Templeton of Revere, Mass., Elaine Edwards and her husband Donald of Randolph, Gail Patalliot of California, and the late Maureen Pepi; dear grandfather of two; and beloved and survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visiting hours were held on Thursday evening at the Cartwright Funeral Home in Randolph. A funeral Mass was held at St. Bernadette Church, also in Randolph, on Friday morning, followed by burial at the Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to the Randolph Food Pantry, PO Box 1189, Randolph, MA 02368.
